Week Fourteen- Thursday
Who: Bear and Ruby
What: Bear just returned from hunting.
When: Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-ish
Where: the Canopy.
Rating: TBD

Bear huffed as he carried his prize back to the Canopy. The sun was out and the wind had died. Bear's t'shirt actually clung to his skin, damp from the sweat of his exertion of carrying the buck over his shoulder. His long hair flicked from side to side as he walked, for once simply laying down his back, no wind to lift strands about his face. Wishing his hands were free to strum the string of his bow like an instrument, Bear let a low chant, the simple words growling out of his throat and voicing the joy that came with this war being over. Of course, the aftermath would include the Feathers in a way that was more unpleasant than the tree-dwellers would like. They hadn't chosen a side during the battles, hadn't made a move against the Jackals... but they couldn't stay tucked up in the branches forever. Bear knew that his services as a negotiator would be in high demand soon. The leaders would be at each others throats if they did all of the talking directly to each other and Bear did have a tendency to think before he spoke. He wasn't terribly excited about meeting these Jackal people and their Leader, but he supposed someone had to set up contact.

The buck thudded to the ground at the base of Bear's tree, it's rack almost cracking as the full force of its weight hit the earth. It was a beautiful work of nature, something the Great Spirit must have been proud to create. But this morning had been the first time in a week and a half that Bear had found the time to go out and hunt- the Feathers needed the meat and the buck had been a great prize indeed. Pulling the creature behind his tree, where no one would see the blood coming from it, Bear took out his knife and began skinning and gutting the animal, letting the blood wash over his hands as he thanked the Great spirit for his gift. Bear's low, rough voice carried slightly through the light air, the Cheyenne words almost mystical in the golden light of the morning.

It was amazing how little sleep you got when you were taking care of a young girl. Tink was always full of energy and never seemed to stop going a hundred miles a minute. Last night the poor girl hadn't been able to sleep, so to be the good "big sister", Ruby had sat up with her all night to make sure that she settled to sleep eventually. And that had taken until 3 a.m. Not able to get to sleep herself, Ruby just stayed up the entire night, going through her medical kits and seeing what she had left and how much. It was important that she wasn't running low on the important things. People would still continue to need medical care, after all. Before she knew it, the sun was up and it was early morning. Around 8 or 9 from just a guess. With a yawn, she came down from her treehouse. Tink was still asleep, so there wasn't much to be gained from staying up in the tree. She'd go back and check on her in a couple hours.

She ran a hand through her hair as she just walked, letting the sunlight warm her and wake her up. Things weren't extremely busy around the Canopy in the early morning. Because most everybody else was sleeping unless they had something of more importance to do. Because of that things were rather peaceful in the morning glow. That was what Ruby liked most about the Canopy. It was so serene. Perfect.

Ruby wasn't paying too much attention to where she was walking, so eventually her wandering took her past Bear's tree. It was the sound of unfamiliar words that caught her attention and had her stopping. Her curiosity got the best of her and so she walked around the tree, not really knowing what she'd fine. But what she did see there made her stop in her tracks. It seemed that he'd just come back from hunting...and was skinning and gutting a buck.

"Oh my..." she said, immediately brushing her haid back behind her ear. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be nosy. The words you were saying before just got me curious."

Bear picked up his head so quickly that tendrils of his hair whipped about his face. he hadn't expected anyone to be up and about this early, otherwise he would have gutted the animal in the woods. He placed his body between Ruby and the blood-stained grass, not wanting her to have to see the blood soaking the hide of such a brilliant animal. He was much taller than her and felt every bit the savage, towering over her with blood on his hands and a glistening knife tight in his fingers. She was fresh and clean and beautiful in the early morning light, lovely even with the shadows beneath her eyes. He glanced at the buck behind him and then back at her glowing face, offering a sheepish smile as a silent apology. He hoped she wouldn't take his silence as an insult. After all, he rarely talked to anyone much less the subject of his long-time crush.

Spreading his arms, Bear urged her around to the clean side of the tree, at the base of which sat a medium sized basin full of water. He dipped his hands and his knife into it, cleansing them of the thick blood before turning back to Ruby. He looked down at her, his every feature speaking his embarrassment.

"Sorry..." His low, smooth voice rumbled in his chest. "I didn't- I was just-" He swallowed his nerves and stuck his clean hands in the pockets of his cut-off jeans. "Thanking the Great Spirit..." His voice trailed off. he never knew what to say to Ruby. Tink he could talk to without trouble. She was a pistol, that little fairy of a girl. But Ruby was all woman, one that he would wait a lifetime for... not that he knew how to tell her that. He cleared his throat and straightened his shoulders.

"So... you're up and about early... you look like you could use a bit more sleep." There. The longest sentence he was sure he had ever said to her that didn't have to do with business...

Ruby stepped back the tiniest bit when Bear stood up and put himself between her and the blood-covered buck. It really was quite the sight, him standing there in front of her. He towered over her naturally and he looked...well...savage. His hair hung down like it always did and there was blood on his hands as well as the knife he'd been using. Any words that she might have had pretty much died on the tip of her tongue. Was she scared? No. Startled perhaps, but not scared. And, oddly enough, she was in awe of the strength she saw in him right then. But all of those thoughts were kept to herself. His sheepish smile, most likely an apology, brought her back some. She didn't take his silence as an insult, not at all.

She stepped around to the other side of the tree, watching him silently as he washed his hands and the knife of the buck's blood. There wasn't any reason for him to be embarrassed. There was nothing wrong with what he'd been doing. It was perfectly natural and, of course, necessary for their welfare.

"Oh, no...you don't have to be sorry. It was my fault for intruding in the first place." Ruby almost couldn't concentrate enough because she liked the sound of his voice so much, so her words were a tiny bit rushed. Wasn't that just sad? It was such fun to be a girl with a crush, now wasn't it. She normally was good with her words. So why didn't that apply when she was talking to Bear? When she talked to him she walked away feeling like a complete and total idiot. In the past, it had never been difficult for her to interface with a guy she liked. Then again, they were always more interested in having sex with her than anything else. God, she never could win, could she?

When he remarked on her being up early and looking like she needed more sleep, she certainly couldn't blame him for the observation. "Tink was having trouble sleeping last night, so I sat up with her so she could fall asleep." She shrugged a little bit, almost shyly. "She didn't end up drifting off until about three in the morning, so I pretty much pulled an all-nighter and needed to get out. And here I am." That time the words weren't so rushed. But who knows when that would wear off.

Not his fault? It had been his choice to gut the deer behind a tree where anyone, even one of the children, could have happened across him. It was most certainly his fault... but he didn't want to argue with Ruby. Sure, they had had minor disagreements in the past. It was rare that Bear had disagreements with anyone, and even more rare for him to have a full on row, but he had, unfortunately, had at least one with each member of his tribe over the years. He'd even had a few with people outside of the Feathers... with good reason, of course. And he wasn't proud of the fact that he almost always won. His common sense and 'think-before-you-speak' attitude just happened to serve him well.

He sighed and smiled, a smile that was a bit of center but that suited him. The little fire-cracker couldn't sleep. Poor thing. None of the children of the nearby tribes deserved the hardships that had been forced upon them, and some of them were just a bit spoiled, not willing to fight for the way they should have been raised. It was the spit fires like Tink that kept the others going, that gave the older tribesmen hope for the future they were trying to build. He thought for a moment. Was it possible that the girl suffered from nightmares? So many of the youngsters did these days. He ran a hand through his hair frowning a bit as he glanced at Ruby, up to his tree house, then back at Ruby.

"I, uh... may have something to help you both... I'll go get it..." he started turning towards the ladder that led to his dwelling, then stopped, realizing it was rude to leave Ruby waiting at the bottom of his tree. He actually felt a blush steal across his chest as he turned back to her. "It might take me a minute... to find it... You can, uh-" He stopped to clear his throat- "come on up, if you'd like..." He turned again, climbing agilely up into the heights and loving how the rising sun felt on the burn scars across his back. If Ruby decided to come up, he wasn't going to be accused of gawking up at her when he suggested ladies went first... of course that would have been the gentlemanly thing to do... of course, a lot of gentlemen only let women to go first because they wanted to gawk... 'Oh just stop thinking, Maheo...' He pulled himself up onto the platform and turned to see if Ruby had followed, hoping he'd have the chance to take her hand and help her up.

Ruby found herself a bit preoccupied with her smile for an extra moment or so. Could you really blame her? The man was gorgeous to start with, but when he smiled it was just...something that she couldn't really accurately describe in words. It actually took her thoughts off of Tink for a bit. But then her thoughts went right back to her adoptive "little sis". It made her feel bad that the poor girl was having trouble getting to sleep. During the day she acted just like normal, but Ruby knew that recent events had affected her more than she let on. But Tink just kept on. It was admirable, actually. The fact that she had the spunk to do what some adults couldn't even do. It made you want to build a better future for her and other children like her to live in. Ruby hadn't thought to ask if it was nightmares keeping the younger girl up. Normally Peter Pan was enough to let her get to sleep peacefully. But maybe in the coming days it wouldn't be enough. She saw Bear look up at his tree house before he looked back down at her.

"Oh, alright." She really wouldn't have minded if he just went up. Patience was a virtue and all that, so she could wait. When saw him blush and saw the color spreading across his chest, her eyes wandered for a moment to follow that blush. But once she realized what she was doing, her eyes snapped back up to his face. "Um, okay. Yeah...I'll come up, then." Dear Lord, why did she not have the usual power of speech that she normally had? Well, she already knew the answer to that question. But why did it have to be so bad today?

Once he'd started up the ladder, she took that first step up to follow after him. And that's when she realized that by being the second one up the ladder that, for the entire time going up, she'd have a perfect view of his backside. Extremely glad that he couldn't see her, Ruby climbed up after him, both looking and not looking at...well, you know. And the entire time there was a blush in her cheeks that she hoped would fade by the time they got to the top. Reaching up, she took his hand (something else to make her blush) in order to pull herself up onto the platform. "Um...thanks."

Her hand was so tiny in his... of course, most things were tiny to him in general, and she was fit but wasn't a little imp of a girl. She had a great figure. She was slim enough to look the slightest bit vulnerable but could most definately hold her own. Bear respected that about her. Of course, he couldn't help wanting to brush his fingers over the blush on her cheeks, caused by the heat maybe? Or by him? Nah... he wasn't anything special... why on earth would she blush over him. Shaking his head slightly, to clear his thoughts, Bear realized he'd paused at the top of the ladder, his hand clasped firmly and warmly around Ruby's, just looking at her. Surely the storms of confision in his eyes and the flush still lingering onhis chest were making her uncomfortable... he dropped her hand as if it had scorched him, turning to walk through his door and motioning Ruby to come on in.

His place wasn't a mess exactly. More of an organized clutter. He'd liked everything neat and sparse before the virus. But now, he had become a bit of a pack-rat. He was unwilling to part with anything to do woth his family or his culture, so beaded talking sticks and drums, painted skins and braided costumes adorned most of the right wall. Opposite them, all of his grandfathers papers and books, the one's he didn't really trust the library to hold on to, were crammed on to makeshift shelves. he had the meticulously ordered and cataloged, the one thing he was a bit obsessive over. At the far end of the room was a makeshift alter of sorts. It displayed a painting of a black bear and the symbol of Maheo, the Great Spirit of the Cheyenne in his spider form.

Bear strode past all of this and under an open arch. His bedroom was his alone so there was no need for a divider between it and his library. His bed, rather large to accomodate his frame, was covered with a dark, patchwork quilt and a thick black fur. his clothes were folded into trunks for the most part, except for the boxers he had taken off and thrown onto the end of the bed that morning. He snatched them up, hastely, hoping Ruby hadn't seen them. That would be awkward...

he shoved them into a chest at the foot of his bed, then called out for Ruby to come to the arch so she could see the wall of Dreamcatchers. All shapes and sizes, some simple,l some complex, som ebeaded and adorned with feathers, and some simply sticks and twine, they cover the entire wall. "Pick one," he said, and then sat on the top of his trunk to kick off his dirty moccasins.

She wasn't exactly the tiniest and slightest of girls, but there was no doubting that she was rather tiny in comparison to him. Her hand was small in his, that was for sure. It felt really nice to hold his hand...so nice that it only deepened the blush in her cheeks. Everything about him did that to her. He was just so different from any other guy that she'd met in her life. Tall, strong, and yet soft-spoken. It was different, but in such a good way. A way that made her have such a crush on him that wouldn't go away. Bear was something special. Something very special. Ruby mentally willed herself to try not to blush several deeper shades of pink as she appreciated the very nice view of his muscles and how nice the warmth of his hand felt around her own. But it definitely wasn't working. With her luck, her eyes were probably giving her away entirely. And then, all at once, her hand was out of his and he was walking into the treehouse. Trying to get a grip, Ruby followed after him.

It was the first time she'd ever been in his treehouse and, needless to say, she was interested to see what it was like. Blue eyes wandered curiously over all of the things adorning the walls. The drums, the paintings, the costumes...it was all so interesting looking. The shelves on the other side of the room were full of books and papers and Ruby found herself wondering just what they all said. Undeniable curiosity. Finally her eyes fell on what looked to be an altar. That made her stop and look for a minute or so, her focus going to the painting of the bear and what looked sort of like a spider. It was beautiful in its own right. Something that she'd never experienced before.

Hearing her name drew her to the archway only to see something even more incredible than the altar. A wall full of dreamcatchers of varying styles and sizes. When he said she could pick one, she looked at him with a smile. "Really?" Slowly, she walked over to the wall and began to look through the dreamcatchers. Ever so delicately, her fingers would drift over ones that she liked. But they lingered the most on a black dreamcatcher, decorated with beads in shades of blue. However, the dreamcatcher wasn't supposed to be for her, now was it? It was for Tink. Turning back to Bear, she pointed to a red dreamcatcher with white beads and feathers adorning it. "This one's really nice."

Finally, someone who really appreciated what he held so dear... Bear sat on his bed, one soft leather slipper dangling from his fingers, frozen in the process of throwing them to the floor as he watched the way her fingers floated over wood and suede. He didn't have to ask and she didn't have to say anything. She way she so delicately traced over the weaves and beads mirrored the reverance that he felt for his culture and religion every second of every day. She took the time to admire each and every Dreamcatcher, lingering on two specifically. One suited her. The black leather was wrapped around a sturdy frame, soft and tender and supportive, just like Ruby was with Tink. At the same time, the roughly hewn blue beads glistened like an undiscovered treasure. Something new and still in need of the minimal amount of polishing, but already dazzlingly beautiful. And a couple were exactly the same color as her eyes.

Bear gently placed his moccasin on the chest before standing and going to inspect the small dreamcatcher she selected. This one wasn't her. It was all Tink- all fire and spark and angelic sweetness rolled into a pretty little web. The black and blue of the other catcher was better suited to Ruby, would guard her slumbers the way the red would perfectly protect Tink- The way the large black and tan catcher, adorned with deer bone beads and golden feathers and hanging above his bed protected him. It was meant to be hers.

The red catcher came off the wall and was placed gently into her hands. It was a gift for Tink alone and he told Ruby so. The red catcher was to hang only above Tink's bed. Then he moved a little closer to Ruby so he could reach the black and blue catcher. He placed a hand tenderly on her shoulder, keeping her from leaving before he could give her the gift, and slowly lowered it from the wall. His eyes spoke volumes as he turned back to her- screamed tenderness and warmth and care that he didn't know how to express in words. The flush was spreading slowly over his chest again and his pulse thudded in the palm that rested on Ruby's soft shoulder. He placed the Dreamcatcher tenderly in her hands.

"This one is for you and you alone... before you hang either of them... thread a piece of your hair-" He lifted the hand on her shoulder, almost reaching out to touch her glowing hair before stopping himself and lowering it to his side. "And wrap it around the strongest thread in the web." He gestured to his own, and to the dark strand of his long hair that had been braided into the thickest part of the catcher. "They'll keep your dreams pleasant... they keep the shadows from your eyes..." He voice, always a low rumble in his chest, had gone soft, melted into a whisper, as if he was gifting Ruby with a secret. She didn't have to know that the real secret was his joy at being able to help Ruby... to care for her and for Tink in a way the his ancestors had cared for wives and children... not that he had any hopes of having that with Ruby... Dreams maybe... but not hopes.

How could a person not appreciate something so beautiful? Each dreamcatcher was a piece of art in and of itself. They made the wall a wash of colors and designs that you just couldn't help admiring and appreciating. At least, Ruby couldn't. She'd never seen so many dreamcatchers in one place at one time, and the ones she'd seen in her own walk of life hadn't been nearly as beautiful as Bear's. Each one got her attention in an entirely new way. Because of some difference in design from the last that made it unique and entirely special. She could have honestly stayed and looked at them for hours and hours, looking into what made each and everyone special and lovely in their own right. But that wasn't what she was there for, now was it? Hence why she'd picked out the red dreamcatcher for Tink and, sadly enough, why she would have to leave the black dreamcatcher with the lovely blue beads behind. It was a shame, yes, but it was Tink's welfare that she was much more worried about. Her dreams and her peaceful slumber.

Ruby took the red dreamcatcher, handling it gently and gingerly so she didn't ruin it. It would have been a horrible shame to ruin something so nice with just a slip of the hand. She nodded her understand when he said that it was only for Tink, meant to hang only above the little girl's bed. When he moved closer to her, she couldn't help but blush again and wonder just what he was doing. You didn't get so close to someone for no reason, right? And then, as if she couldn't make a bigger fool of herself, his hand was on her shoulder. There was a large chance now that her cheeks had bloomed in shades of pink and red. Why oh why did her feelings have to read so vividly on her face? She looked up into his eyes when he turned back to her and she had to admit that she wasn't sure what sort of look it was...it almost seemed like a warmth and caring that she hadn't necessarily seen in someone's eyes when they looked at her. It was nice. Almost forgetting how to think, she got back to reality and took the black and blue dreamcatcher when he gave it to her.

Her ability to speak hadn't really come back and she could only stand there, looking up at him and nodding at the things he told her. The black dreamcatcher was a gift for her and she thought it exceedingly sweet for him to give it to her. "A piece of hair around the strongest thread in the web...I understand." Her voice was also soft as she smiled softly up at him. It had been a long time since someone had cared for her that way. Cared about what might have been troubling her. She hadn't realized how much she'd missed it until right then.

"Thank you. I really appreciate it." And then, all at once, Ruby leaned up to kiss him on the cheek. It was soft, it was gentle...but it was also genuine. Once she was back just standing in front of him, that smile still graced her features as did the slight blush in her cheeks.

Bear felt quite sure that his stomach had dropped straight to his toes, along with his jaw. His eyes, always warm and welcoming, were surely lit with flames, as opposed to the embers they normally held. What had been intended to give him only the pleasure of knowing her dreams were safe, had won him the pleasure of a kiss. A small peck on the cheek to some was a veritable trophy where bear was concerned. he hadn't known a woman's lips in years and the fact that these lips were Ruby's, so soft and warm even against his flushed and heated skin. He was standing so close to her. And she looked almost angelic, a gift from the Great Spirit to heat the blood in Bear's veins. He so wanted to feel those lips again, against his this time instead of the skin of his cheeks. All he had to do was lean down... instinctively he did so, stopping himself a few inches from her lovely face and trying his hardest not to just claim her lips as his own. He was sure the flush across his dark chest was a red as her cheeks but he couldn't seem to care.

Then, shaking his head, Bear pulled back. It had only been a thank you. It probably didn't mean anything more than just that... did it? He saw the way she cradled the Dreamcatchers to her chest. The flush on her cheeks was because she loved them, wasn't it? And she was excited about taking them home to Tink? Bear sighed- a sigh of frustration and longing rolled into one. He took a reluctant step back, his shoulders alittle stooped, his disheartened mood making itself visible, even if it was a bit unwarranted, and opened his trunk to take out a clean shirt. He kept his back to Ruby as he let the fabric fall over his broad, scarred shoulders, mentally kicking himself for not just kissing the woman and taking the heat for it if she hadn't wanted him to do so. But it was too late now. He turned, his eyes stormy with his inner turmoil but his face as kind and serene as ever. He cleared his throat again.

"So... what are your plans for today? Would I be imposing if I came by to see how Tink likes her Dreamcatcher?"

It had never made her so happy to give a man a kiss on the cheek in her entire life. True, the way that she used to act, she would have just kissed a guy without abandon or care...whether or not he wanted to be kissed. But she wasn't like that anymore. Her kisses (on the cheek or otherwise) were given where they were due. And Bear certainly deserved it for how kind he was being to her. Actually, he deserved for quite a few other reasons too. Reasons that she couldn't voice for fear of making a complete and total fool of herself. It was bad enough standing there in front of them with her face as flushed as a cherry and wanting to kiss him again, and this time on the lips. When he leaned down and his face was only a few inches from hers, it took all of her self control to not just wrap her arms around his neck and kiss him like she wanted to. It was extremely tempting, to say the least. But she didn't do it.

Once Bear had pulled back, she instantly regretted not doing what she'd been so tempted to do. That kiss on the cheek hadn't been only a thank you. It meant more than that! He was the reason she was blushing so terribly. But there wasn't any way to really tell him that. She was far too afraid to say how she felt. Ruby saw the way that his shoulders stooped and it almost seemed as if he was disheartened about something. Her eyes fell to the floor. Why couldn't she just tell him how she felt? Why was it so hard now? Maybe...maybe it was because this was the new Ruby. The one who didn't act the way she did solely to get attention from guys. Her former kind of "confidence" might have been a bit much, but at least a little bit of it would have helped out a lot.

"I don't have anything planned for today, actually," she said, her smile soft even though her eyes clearly said that something was bothering her. Sometimes her emotions just showed across her face that way. "You can come by, it's no imposition at all. I'm sure Tink would love to see you." She chuckled a little bit. "And, just a warning, she will try to tackle-hug you. I don't think she gets that you're so big and that it won't necessarily work so well."

Bear let a look of mock horror cover his face when Ruby mentioned the way Tink would most likely greet him. He slapped his hand to his chest, the impact thudding against such solid muscle, and put his other hand to his forehead as though he was about to swoon.

"Oh no! Not a tackle-hug!" His lips spread over his white teeth in a stunning smile as he put down his hands and brought his eyes back down to Ruby's. His chuckle rumbled through his chest, like thunder in the distance. He loved Tink. It was apparent in his eyes as he gazed into Ruby's. Of course, the little girl could probably take him down. He frowned a little, his eyes still twinkling with light and love.

"Of course... if she focused all seventy pounds of her weight at my knees... she could probably knock me off my feet." He laughed again, crossing his arms over his chest and imagining what a sight that would be- such a tiny little fairy of a girl taking down all six foot six of him. "I hope your floor is soft... and strong... I don't think all of my weight hitting the floor will end up very well..." He lifted a brow at Ruby, his flush returning as he thought of himself on that floor... with Ruby. Fire lit in his eyes- all passion and hunger and heat. He wished he had kissed her when he'd had the chance a moment ago. HIs face was almost serious as he tried to temper his passions, leash them tight and not let him prove himself as the savage most thought him to be. He fisted his hands against his arms, reigning in his rather animalistic urges as he spoke again to Ruby. His voice was even lower than usual, brought on by the depths of the fire he felt for Ruby.

"So... is there a time that's best for me to come over? If you'll wait just a moment, I can put that buck in my shed out back and cook you and Tink some breakfast... if you'd like..."

She couldn't help but laugh and smile at his mock look of horror and the dramatic swoon that could put any old-time movie actress to shame. Not to mention that his smile was so nice...it was contagious. And his laugh, so deep that it almost sounded like thunder. Honestly, it wasn't difficult for her to go on and on about why she smiled around Bear. There were so many things about him. So many wonderful things.

Among those things was the fact that he didn't dislike children. She knew that he loved Tink just like she did and it was refreshing. Some men just didn't know how to deal with kids. "She probably could. Especially if she took a running start. But my guess is she won't be aiming at your knees. More like your waist." Though it would be funny seeing Tink take down giant Bear. "The floor's plenty strong. Soft...well, it's as soft as wood can be." A slight chuckle passed her lips before it faded, being carried away as her mind started to wander. And to be perfectly honest it was wandering to places that made that blush return to her face. Why hadn't she just kissed him? At least it would have saved her from blushing like an idiot and thinking about the fact that she wouldn't mind being on the floor with Bear doing...well, you can guess that much. It took a lot of effort to push those thoughts to the back of her mind and to focus on the conversation at hand.

"That'd be really nice. I have to go back over and check on her. If she's awake I have to help her clean and re-bandage a couple scrapes she got the other day. If I don't help her, she'll forget to do it..." And now she was rambling. Great. "But you can come by when you're finished. Um...do you need any help?"

Bear loved the way her flush flew over her cheeks. Perhaps her shouldn't have invited himself over? Of course, she didn't know that he'd prefer making just her breakfast... He coughed into his hand when she started talking, trying to focus on what she was saying when all he really wanted to do was tell her how he felt and kiss her...

"She cut her self up?" His brow creased with worry. "How did she manage it this time?" It was amazing that that little girl hadn't broken any major bones, especially living in and around all of these trees. "If you'll just talk to me while I clean up, it'll be done soon. I can distract Tink while you clean her up, then get breakfast started." He grabbed three links of dried venison from the little cabinet he used as a pantry, next the the small wood stove near the arch. He took her hand, still hoping she wouldn't notice the other various pieces of clothing strewn about the room. He really needed to do some laundry... He slipped on a pair of boots that he'd left by the front door, before starting down the ladder, holding his hands to either side in case Ruby should stumble. He couldn't help that he really had a great view... He tried to be a gentleman and avert his gaze as he headed down to relocate the buck.

She had absolutely no problem with Bear coming by her treehouse. Honestly, she would have invited him herself...but her brain was still mildly on the fritz from the lingering memory of what he looked like shirtless. Such wonderful muscles would have that kind of effect on a girl. It was difficult to make herself focus, but eventually she got herself to talk and not let the words come out in a complete and total knot of jibberish. Still, nagging at the back of her mind was the fact that she still really wanted to kiss him.

"It's not that bad. She was running and skinned her knees and got a scrape on her arm. Real superficial stuff." It really was a miracle that Tink had managed not to break any bones thus far. Knock on wood. Hopefully it wouldn't happen. Ruby was confident in her ability to set a bone, but she would much rather not have to do it. "Alright, sounds fine to me." She tried not to get in his way as he picked up the things that he needed. And when he took her hand, the blush that had just died down came back in full force. Ruby was so happy that it was impossible to focus on anything else. So of course she didn't notice the clothes around his room.

She was the second one down the ladder and, admittedly, it was disappointing to not be able to have the same view that she'd had going up the ladder. Sad day. Ruby descended the ladder, trying her absolute best not to stumble and fall right on top of Bear. That would have been extremely embarrassing.

Bear jumped the last few rungs of the ladder and landed softly on the ground, despite his weight. He lifted his hand, placing them lightly on Ruby's hips to help her to the ground. He loved how she felt... and courteous actions were the only way he could touch her with out seeming like a total brute. He wanted to know everything about her- all of her secrets and passions and joys and concerns. He wanted her to trust him with her body, mind and soul... but he couldn't tellher that now could he? SO he tried to convey his care and affection in the way he gently lowered her to the ground, lifting her over the last few steps and placing her gently on her feet. He walked around the base of the tree then, afraid she'd see the bright red flags on his cheeks and think badly of him. He drug the buck into his little ramshackle shed out back, giving himself time to compose himself before going back to wash his hands in the basin again.

After tightly lacing his boots and making sure the shed was bolted shut, Bear took his venison in one hand and Ruby's elbow gently in the other, guiding her along the path between the towering trees and the homes that topped them. "So how do want breakfast? Venison is good with pretty much anything... anything You'd like in particular?"

She'd heard him jump, but hadn't at all been expecting the feeling of his hands on her hips. But there was no way to deny that it felt good to have him holding her like that. Bear's touch was always so gentle and was always courteous. He never overstepped boundaries, not ever. But she wouldn't have minded feeling his touch in a different way. If there was any man that she felt she could trust, it was Bear. Ruby could have told him anything and everything about herself. And she wanted to know everything about him. Wanted to know that he trusted her enough to share those sorts of things. But it was just a silly fantasy, wasn't it? He didn't care about her in that way and he likely never would. Still...that didn't mean that she couldn't enjoy his courteous move to lift her down off the ladder and set her on the ground. She waited for him there at the base of the tree, trying to get the blush out of her cheeks while still trying to retain the feeling of his hands on her hips. Apparently she'd managed to compose herself enough so she wasn't as red as a cherry.

Ruby smiled gently once he'd come back, walking next to him as he guided her along. "Um...well, I'm not picky. Which is basically just a way to say that I'm indecisive." She chuckled a little bit. "Anything that you'd suggest?" He was probably better at coming up with good things to go with venison than she was. Her forte was more along the lines of stitches, medical salves and bandages.

Bear wrapped strands of his hair up and under his nose, forming a mustache which he playfully stroked his fingers down as he pondered their breakfast menu. Her skin felt warm and soft beneath his calloused fingers and he wanted to see that same, sunny softness on her lovely face. He wanted to here her laugh. He twirled a lock around his finger and placed himself almost around front of her, just so she could see the look on his face.

"Well... we could catch the golden goose... and buy cinnamon buns with raisins and cream using the eggs she lays... or we could find Mr. Willy Wonka's geese that lay the chocolate eggs... and have warm chocolate pancakes with sausage on the side..." His stomach rumbled, deep and low. He wished he could actually do that for Tink and for Ruby. He dropped his hair, letting it fall to his shoulders as he smiled warmly at Ruby.

"If only, if only, the woodpecker sighs... I can whip up this sausage with some oatmeal. I have a bit of cinnamon, still and it will be filling enough for a good, hard day of work... or in Tink's case, play." His lips quirked up on one corner, his eyes twinkling with love for the little girl. He arched a brow, asking in silence if that would suit Ruby and Tink's tastes.

When he turned to face her with that silly expression on his face -- mustache and all -- Ruby just had to laugh, the sound light and sunny as it almost always was. Bear had always been good at making her laugh. Even if at times neither of them had to speak in order to understand the other one, he could always put a smile on her face and make her laugh. Especially when she needed it the most.

"Golden geese or geese that lay chocolate eggs...sounds like they'd be hard to find nowadays." If only such fantastic things were around in less than fantastic times. That would have made things a heck of a lot better. "Those sorts of things do sound really good. Like...really good." The thought of cinnamon buns and chocolate really did make her hungry. If only they could actually have those sorts of things again. Trying to shake those thoughts from her head, she watched Bear let his hair back down, smiling up at him when he smiled at her.

Without really thinking about it, her hands came up to play in her own hair, braiding and unbraiding a few strands idly as they walked. "That sounds perfect. And Tink will like it too." She chuckled some. "Actually, she likes just about all kinds of food. Whatever will give her energy to get into what she gets into from day to day." It rally was evident that Bear cared about Tink. And a lot. She thought it was so sweet.

Praise to the Great Spirit, her laugh was such a blessing to his ears, all light and sunshine and happiness. He had done that- made her smile and laugh and light up like a firefly, daring to challenge the sun. He reached out instinctively to wrap a tendril of her hair around his finger, chuckling deep in his chest as he walked beside her. It was soft as silk, not that he'd expected anything less. Sighing his contentment, Bear slowed as they reached the ladder that led to Ruby and Tink's treehouse. He agilely climbed up the rungs, waiting at the top and again offering his hand to Ruby as she reached the top. Her hand wasn't as soft as her hair of course. Everyone had callouses these days... except maybe those spoiled Mountain Lions... scratch that... those spoiled Jackals. He felt his brow cease with displeasure as he lifted Ruby ont the platform and stood back to let Ruby get to the door.

Ruby loved to laugh, but she had no idea that anyone enjoyed hearing her laugh so much. Was it really that special? Who knew. That smile was still on her lips, soft and warm. And apparently the smile always went better with a blush, because that deep pink color crept back into her cheeks when Bear played with her hair some. It was nice, though he probably didn't mean anything by it other than the obvious friendly behavior. Eventually they reached the base of her tree. He went up the ladder first and once again she had to keep herself from staring at the view above her as she climbed up to the top of the ladder. Her hand was placed in his as he helped her up onto the platform of the treehouse. Giving a smile and an unspoken 'thank you' for his help, she stepped past him to open the door so they could get inside.

Her treehouse was very simple. Neat enough. A good amount of space was dedicated to all her medical supplies. Everything that she'd managed to salvage from her parents' old house that was still in good enough shape to use. She walked inside, motioning for Bear to follow and hearing movement back in the bedroom. Which meant that Tink was awake. "Hey munchkin, you up?" she called. The automatic response was, "Don't call me munchkin! I'm not that short!" With a roll of her eyes and a laugh, Ruby walked over to the bedroom doorway. "Yes, you are that short. Short enough to be a member of the Lollipop Guild. Anyway...there's someone here to see you." Tink immediately asked who it was. "It's Bear," Ruby said, just as quickly getting out of the way so she wouldn't be in the line of fire.

She counted down on her fingers. "Three...two...one..." And right afterward, Tink came zooming out with a huge grin on her face. She ran up and hugged Bear, wrapping her arms around his middle. "Hi!" she said, her voice all energy and...well...Tinkerbell-like.

Bear screwed up his face in a mock growl, letting the sound rumble from his torso as he swung Tink up and into the air before setting her on the ground and wrapping her in a "Bear Hug". Her bell-like voice tinkled through the room, bouncing joyously off of the walls and medical equipment. She was such a lovely little ray of sunshine... If it held true that faeries were born of a baby's first laugh, Bear wouldn't be surprised if it ahd been one of Ruby's laughs- the beautiful bell tones of her laugh and Tink's voice were so similar.

Bear smiled at Ruby over Tink's head, joy shining from his face. He lifted the tiny girl and swung her onto his back, turning his head so he could see those blue eyes of hers out of the corner of his gaze.

"How does breakfast sound, Ms. Bell? I have sausage!" He reached back to playfully tickle the bottom of Tink's bare foot. "And I even have cinnamon if you're a good little faery and go get dressed." He turned his head back to Ruby, a smile in his eyes and a brow quirked up. "I think threr may be a present for you somewhere too, but you can't have it until you've eaten every bite of your breakfast." He winked at Ruby, silently conspiring to get Tink to eat all of her oatmeal an enjoying how easy it was for him to fit intot he flow of their home. Growling again, Bear spun around then placed Tink gently on the floor.

Tink giggled as Bear growled and swung her up in the air before giving her a big old bear hug. She loved his hugs! It almost made her feel like she'd felt when her dad had hugged her in the past...before the virus. It made her feel safe and loved, and what young girl didn't want to feel that way? That's why she loved Bear so much. She could tell that he really cared about her, unlike the stupid guys who only pretended to like her so that they could get to Ruby. Those were the ones she'd like to kick in the shins. But Bear was spared any of the wrath of Tink. And it was a very scary wrath, thank you very much.

Ruby smiled back at Bear, setting the dreamcatchers down on a shelf back in her bedroom. Those could be saved for later. It was hard not to laugh as she watched a giggling Tink being swung onto Bear's back. The two of them really did get along well together.

"Um, hello, it's food! When does food not sound good to me?" Tink said, laughing as he tickled her foot. At the mention of cinnamon, she grinned brightly. "Okay! I'll go get dressed, then. I love cinnamon!" When presents came into play, she looked over at Ruby with excitement in her eyes. "Presents too? Geez, this is the best day ever!" Ruby laughed at that. "Alright, munchkin, you heard the man. Go get dressed and you can have your present after you've eaten all your breakfast."

Once she was placed on the floor, Tink ran back into the bedroom to pick out some clothes. Ruby smiled over at Bear then, "You two get along so well. It's amazing."

Bear let out a laugh as Tink skipped across the floor. The little imp was just too cute for her own good. Ruby was lucky that Tink wasn't of an age where boys thought her cute yet. Most of them probably still thought little girls were gross. In a couple of years, Bear was going to have to sleep outside of Ruby's tree house so the boys wouldn't sneak through her window. He mentioned this to Ruby, a serious, almost paternal look on his face.

"If any boy ever hurts her, it will give me a reason to practice my ancestor's habit of scalping..." Bear had never been a violent man. He hoped Ruby realized just how much he cared for that little girl. Of course, he'd flay anyone who ever hurt Ruby as well. But he wasn't sure he was quite comfortable telling her that yet. Blushing a bit, Bear's long legs carried him to the hotplate in the corner in only a few steps. The little kitchen area was well stocked, especially for a Feather. Bear did most of his cooking in an old wood burning stove that he'd lugged up his tree. He put the kettle on to boil water for the oats and let the sausages soak up so water before removing the kettle and letting them sizzle onto the hotplate. The oatmeal was cooking up in the boiling water and the little house smelled of warm sausages before Bear turned to Ruby again.

"Thank you... for letting me be a part of Tink's life, Ruby... and a part of yours." He turned away from her again, reaching for a slightly chipped but pretty plate in the stack next to the hotplate. He put sausage on the side of three small bowls of oatmeal and sprinkled cinnamon over the hot cereal. His eyes were warm, tender, when he turned around to put the food on the table, but also full of a hunger he wasn't sure he could quench. Ruby was someone he could never get enough of.

Tink really was cute and Ruby was sure she always would be, no matter her age. It was quite a good thing that boys hadn't started thinking that she was cute, though. Ruby remembered what that had been like with her and her parents, so experiencing it now actually scared her a bit. She didn't want Tink to turn out how she had when she was a preteen and then a teenager. She didn't want boys trying to sneak into her window at night for...well, those things that curious boys and girls did. Things that Ruby herself had done in the past. If she let Tink turn out that way, it would be her own fault and she was sure that she'd never be able to forgive herself.

Bear's words were quite serious and she didn't doubt them at all, especially when she saw the look on his face. Serious. Protective. Paternal, even. So he really did care...more than she might have ever imagined. "I would hope that it doesn't come to that," she said, "but I have to say, she's quite a lucky girl to have someone like you willing to protect her in the way that I can't." Ruby just watched him walk over to the corner to cook the venison and the oatmeal. She went rummaging through her bins of medical supplies, looking for the things she'd need to help Tink with her scrapes. Bandages, rubbing alcohol, a little roll of gauze...she gathered them all up, shutting the bin just as Bear looked back at her.

Before she could respond, he looked away, so she simply smiled to herself. A true and genuine smile. "You don't have to thank me. Because honestly, I wouldn't want things any other way." And she meant that sincerely. Bear's presence in her and Tink's lives was something that she wanted and always would want. She set the things she had in her hands aside, walking back over to the table. The food looked delicious, as simple as it was. But that wasn't her concentration. Ruby blushed when she sat down, trying to clear her thoughts a bit so her feelings wouldn't read entirely on her face.

But someone noticed them. Tink was snooping, peeking out the slightest bit from the bedroom doorway. She'd heard every word that the two of them had said, and seen everything. The way that Bear looked at Ruby...it reminded her of the way that her dad had looked at her mom when they were alive. They really seemed to like each other a lot. But they hadn't said anything of the sort to each other. This needed to be corrected! She came out then, bounding over to the table with a smile on her face. The t-shirt she was wearing was too big, so she was practically swimming in it. But at least it was comfortable. "Everything looks yummy! Thank you, Bear."
