Week Fourteen- Thursday
Who: Bear and Ruby
What: Bear just returned from hunting.
When: Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-ish
Where: the Canopy.
Rating: TBD

Bear huffed as he carried his prize back to the Canopy. The sun was out and the wind had died. Bear's t'shirt actually clung to his skin, damp from the sweat of his exertion of carrying the buck over his shoulder. His long hair flicked from side to side as he walked, for once simply laying down his back, no wind to lift strands about his face. Wishing his hands were free to strum the string of his bow like an instrument, Bear let a low chant, the simple words growling out of his throat and voicing the joy that came with this war being over. Of course, the aftermath would include the Feathers in a way that was more unpleasant than the tree-dwellers would like. They hadn't chosen a side during the battles, hadn't made a move against the Jackals... but they couldn't stay tucked up in the branches forever. Bear knew that his services as a negotiator would be in high demand soon. The leaders would be at each others throats if they did all of the talking directly to each other and Bear did have a tendency to think before he spoke. He wasn't terribly excited about meeting these Jackal people and their Leader, but he supposed someone had to set up contact.

The buck thudded to the ground at the base of Bear's tree, it's rack almost cracking as the full force of its weight hit the earth. It was a beautiful work of nature, something the Great Spirit must have been proud to create. But this morning had been the first time in a week and a half that Bear had found the time to go out and hunt- the Feathers needed the meat and the buck had been a great prize indeed. Pulling the creature behind his tree, where no one would see the blood coming from it, Bear took out his knife and began skinning and gutting the animal, letting the blood wash over his hands as he thanked the Great spirit for his gift. Bear's low, rough voice carried slightly through the light air, the Cheyenne words almost mystical in the golden light of the morning.

It was amazing how little sleep you got when you were taking care of a young girl. Tink was always full of energy and never seemed to stop going a hundred miles a minute. Last night the poor girl hadn't been able to sleep, so to be the good "big sister", Ruby had sat up with her all night to make sure that she settled to sleep eventually. And that had taken until 3 a.m. Not able to get to sleep herself, Ruby just stayed up the entire night, going through her medical kits and seeing what she had left and how much. It was important that she wasn't running low on the important things. People would still continue to need medical care, after all. Before she knew it, the sun was up and it was early morning. Around 8 or 9 from just a guess. With a yawn, she came down from her treehouse. Tink was still asleep, so there wasn't much to be gained from staying up in the tree. She'd go back and check on her in a couple hours.

She ran a hand through her hair as she just walked, letting the sunlight warm her and wake her up. Things weren't extremely busy around the Canopy in the early morning. Because most everybody else was sleeping unless they had something of more importance to do. Because of that things were rather peaceful in the morning glow. That was what Ruby liked most about the Canopy. It was so serene. Perfect.

Ruby wasn't paying too much attention to where she was walking, so eventually her wandering took her past Bear's tree. It was the sound of unfamiliar words that caught her attention and had her stopping. Her curiosity got the best of her and so she walked around the tree, not really knowing what she'd fine. But what she did see there made her stop in her tracks. It seemed that he'd just come back from hunting...and was skinning and gutting a buck.

"Oh my..." she said, immediately brushing her haid back behind her ear. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be nosy. The words you were saying before just got me curious."

Bear picked up his head so quickly that tendrils of his hair whipped about his face. he hadn't expected anyone to be up and about this early, otherwise he would have gutted the animal in the woods. He placed his body between Ruby and the blood-stained grass, not wanting her to have to see the blood soaking the hide of such a brilliant animal. He was much taller than her and felt every bit the savage, towering over her with blood on his hands and a glistening knife tight in his fingers. She was fresh and clean and beautiful in the early morning light, lovely even with the shadows beneath her eyes. He glanced at the buck behind him and then back at her glowing face, offering a sheepish smile as a silent apology. He hoped she wouldn't take his silence as an insult. After all, he rarely talked to anyone much less the subject of his long-time crush.

Spreading his arms, Bear urged her around to the clean side of the tree, at the base of which sat a medium sized basin full of water. He dipped his hands and his knife into it, cleansing them of the thick blood before turning back to Ruby. He looked down at her, his every feature speaking his embarrassment.

"Sorry..." His low, smooth voice rumbled in his chest. "I didn't- I was just-" He swallowed his nerves and stuck his clean hands in the pockets of his cut-off jeans. "Thanking the Great Spirit..." His voice trailed off. he never knew what to say to Ruby. Tink he could talk to without trouble. She was a pistol, that little fairy of a girl. But Ruby was all woman, one that he would wait a lifetime for... not that he knew how to tell her that. He cleared his throat and straightened his shoulders.

"So... you're up and about early... you look like you could use a bit more sleep." There. The longest sentence he was sure he had ever said to her that didn't have to do with business...

Ruby stepped back the tiniest bit when Bear stood up and put himself between her and the blood-covered buck. It really was quite the sight, him standing there in front of her. He towered over her naturally and he looked...well...savage. His hair hung down like it always did and there was blood on his hands as well as the knife he'd been using. Any words that she might have had pretty much died on the tip of her tongue. Was she scared? No. Startled perhaps, but not scared. And, oddly enough, she was in awe of the strength she saw in him right then. But all of those thoughts were kept to herself. His sheepish smile, most likely an apology, brought her back some. She didn't take his silence as an insult, not at all.

She stepped around to the other side of the tree, watching him silently as he washed his hands and the knife of the buck's blood. There wasn't any reason for him to be embarrassed. There was nothing wrong with what he'd been doing. It was perfectly natural and, of course, necessary for their welfare.

"Oh, no...you don't have to be sorry. It was my fault for intruding in the first place." Ruby almost couldn't concentrate enough because she liked the sound of his voice so much, so her words were a tiny bit rushed. Wasn't that just sad? It was such fun to be a girl with a crush, now wasn't it. She normally was good with her words. So why didn't that apply when she was talking to Bear? When she talked to him she walked away feeling like a complete and total idiot. In the past, it had never been difficult for her to interface with a guy she liked. Then again, they were always more interested in having sex with her than anything else. God, she never could win, could she?

When he remarked on her being up early and looking like she needed more sleep, she certainly couldn't blame him for the observation. "Tink was having trouble sleeping last night, so I sat up with her so she could fall asleep." She shrugged a little bit, almost shyly. "She didn't end up drifting off until about three in the morning, so I pretty much pulled an all-nighter and needed to get out. And here I am." That time the words weren't so rushed. But who knows when that would wear off.

Not his fault? It had been his choice to gut the deer behind a tree where anyone, even one of the children, could have happened across him. It was most certainly his fault... but he didn't want to argue with Ruby. Sure, they had had minor disagreements in the past. It was rare that Bear had disagreements with anyone, and even more rare for him to have a full on row, but he had, unfortunately, had at least one with each member of his tribe over the years. He'd even had a few with people outside of the Feathers... with good reason, of course. And he wasn't proud of the fact that he almost always won. His common sense and 'think-before-you-speak' attitude just happened to serve him well.

He sighed and smiled, a smile that was a bit of center but that suited him. The little fire-cracker couldn't sleep. Poor thing. None of the children of the nearby tribes deserved the hardships that had been forced upon them, and some of them were just a bit spoiled, not willing to fight for the way they should have been raised. It was the spit fires like Tink that kept the others going, that gave the older tribesmen hope for the future they were trying to build. He thought for a moment. Was it possible that the girl suffered from nightmares? So many of the youngsters did these days. He ran a hand through his hair frowning a bit as he glanced at Ruby, up to his tree house, then back at Ruby.

"I, uh... may have something to help you both... I'll go get it..." he started turning towards the ladder that led to his dwelling, then stopped, realizing it was rude to leave Ruby waiting at the bottom of his tree. He actually felt a blush steal across his chest as he turned back to her. "It might take me a minute... to find it... You can, uh-" He stopped to clear his throat- "come on up, if you'd like..." He turned again, climbing agilely up into the heights and loving how the rising sun felt on the burn scars across his back. If Ruby decided to come up, he wasn't going to be accused of gawking up at her when he suggested ladies went first... of course that would have been the gentlemanly thing to do... of course, a lot of gentlemen only let women to go first because they wanted to gawk... 'Oh just stop thinking, Maheo...' He pulled himself up onto the platform and turned to see if Ruby had followed, hoping he'd have the chance to take her hand and help her up.

Ruby found herself a bit preoccupied with her smile for an extra moment or so. Could you really blame her? The man was gorgeous to start with, but when he smiled it was just...something that she couldn't really accurately describe in words. It actually took her thoughts off of Tink for a bit. But then her thoughts went right back to her adoptive "little sis". It made her feel bad that the poor girl was having trouble getting to sleep. During the day she acted just like normal, but Ruby knew that recent events had affected her more than she let on. But Tink just kept on. It was admirable, actually. The fact that she had the spunk to do what some adults couldn't even do. It made you want to build a better future for her and other children like her to live in. Ruby hadn't thought to ask if it was nightmares keeping the younger girl up. Normally Peter Pan was enough to let her get to sleep peacefully. But maybe in the coming days it wouldn't be enough. She saw Bear look up at his tree house before he looked back down at her.

"Oh, alright." She really wouldn't have minded if he just went up. Patience was a virtue and all that, so she could wait. When saw him blush and saw the color spreading across his chest, her eyes wandered for a moment to follow that blush. But once she realized what she was doing, her eyes snapped back up to his face. "Um, okay. Yeah...I'll come up, then." Dear Lord, why did she not have the usual power of speech that she normally had? Well, she already knew the answer to that question. But why did it have to be so bad today?

Once he'd started up the ladder, she took that first step up to follow after him. And that's when she realized that by being the second one up the ladder that, for the entire time going up, she'd have a perfect view of his backside. Extremely glad that he couldn't see her, Ruby climbed up after him, both looking and not looking at...well, you know. And the entire time there was a blush in her cheeks that she hoped would fade by the time they got to the top. Reaching up, she took his hand (something else to make her blush) in order to pull herself up onto the platform. "Um...thanks."

Her hand was so tiny in his... of course, most things were tiny to him in general, and she was fit but wasn't a little imp of a girl. She had a great figure. She was slim enough to look the slightest bit vulnerable but could most definately hold her own. Bear respected that about her. Of course, he couldn't help wanting to brush his fingers over the blush on her cheeks, caused by the heat maybe? Or by him? Nah... he wasn't anything special... why on earth would she blush over him. Shaking his head slightly, to clear his thoughts, Bear realized he'd paused at the top of the ladder, his hand clasped firmly and warmly around Ruby's, just looking at her. Surely the storms of confision in his eyes and the flush still lingering onhis chest were making her uncomfortable... he dropped her hand as if it had scorched him, turning to walk through his door and motioning Ruby to come on in.

His place wasn't a mess exactly. More of an organized clutter. He'd liked everything neat and sparse before the virus. But now, he had become a bit of a pack-rat. He was unwilling to part with anything to do woth his family or his culture, so beaded talking sticks and drums, painted skins and braided costumes adorned most of the right wall. Opposite them, all of his grandfathers papers and books, the one's he didn't really trust the library to hold on to, were crammed on to makeshift shelves. he had the meticulously ordered and cataloged, the one thing he was a bit obsessive over. At the far end of the room was a makeshift alter of sorts. It displayed a painting of a black bear and the symbol of Maheo, the Great Spirit of the Cheyenne in his spider form.

Bear strode past all of this and under an open arch. His bedroom was his alone so there was no need for a divider between it and his library. His bed, rather large to accomodate his frame, was covered with a dark, patchwork quilt and a thick black fur. his clothes were folded into trunks for the most part, except for the boxers he had taken off and thrown onto the end of the bed that morning. He snatched them up, hastely, hoping Ruby hadn't seen them. That would be awkward...

he shoved them into a chest at the foot of his bed, then called out for Ruby to come to the arch so she could see the wall of Dreamcatchers. All shapes and sizes, some simple,l some complex, som ebeaded and adorned with feathers, and some simply sticks and twine, they cover the entire wall. "Pick one," he said, and then sat on the top of his trunk to kick off his dirty moccasins.

She wasn't exactly the tiniest and slightest of girls, but there was no doubting that she was rather tiny in comparison to him. Her hand was small in his, that was for sure. It felt really nice to hold his hand...so nice that it only deepened the blush in her cheeks. Everything about him did that to her. He was just so different from any other guy that she'd met in her life. Tall, strong, and yet soft-spoken. It was different, but in such a good way. A way that made her have such a crush on him that wouldn't go away. Bear was something special. Something very special. Ruby mentally willed herself to try not to blush several deeper shades of pink as she appreciated the very nice view of his muscles and how nice the warmth of his hand felt around her own. But it definitely wasn't working. With her luck, her eyes were probably giving her away entirely. And then, all at once, her hand was out of his and he was walking into the treehouse. Trying to get a grip, Ruby followed after him.

It was the first time she'd ever been in his treehouse and, needless to say, she was interested to see what it was like. Blue eyes wandered curiously over all of the things adorning the walls. The drums, the paintings, the costumes...it was all so interesting looking. The shelves on the other side of the room were full of books and papers and Ruby found herself wondering just what they all said. Undeniable curiosity. Finally her eyes fell on what looked to be an altar. That made her stop and look for a minute or so, her focus going to the painting of the bear and what looked sort of like a spider. It was beautiful in its own right. Something that she'd never experienced before.

Hearing her name drew her to the archway only to see something even more incredible than the altar. A wall full of dreamcatchers of varying styles and sizes. When he said she could pick one, she looked at him with a smile. "Really?" Slowly, she walked over to the wall and began to look through the dreamcatchers. Ever so delicately, her fingers would drift over ones that she liked. But they lingered the most on a black dreamcatcher, decorated with beads in shades of blue. However, the dreamcatcher wasn't supposed to be for her, now was it? It was for Tink. Turning back to Bear, she pointed to a red dreamcatcher with white beads and feathers adorning it. "This one's really nice."

Finally, someone who really appreciated what he held so dear... Bear sat on his bed, one soft leather slipper dangling from his fingers, frozen in the process of throwing them to the floor as he watched the way her fingers floated over wood and suede. He didn't have to ask and she didn't have to say anything. She way she so delicately traced over the weaves and beads mirrored the reverance that he felt for his culture and religion every second of every day. She took the time to admire each and every Dreamcatcher, lingering on two specifically. One suited her. The black leather was wrapped around a sturdy frame, soft and tender and supportive, just like Ruby was with Tink. At the same time, the roughly hewn blue beads glistened like an undiscovered treasure. Something new and still in need of the minimal amount of polishing, but already dazzlingly beautiful. And a couple were exactly the same color as her eyes.

Bear gently placed his moccasin on the chest before standing and going to inspect the small dreamcatcher she selected. This one wasn't her. It was all Tink- all fire and spark and angelic sweetness rolled into a pretty little web. The black and blue of the other catcher was better suited to Ruby, would guard her slumbers the way the red would perfectly protect Tink- The way the large black and tan catcher, adorned with deer bone beads and golden feathers and hanging above his bed protected him. It was meant to be hers.

The red catcher came off the wall and was placed gently into her hands. It was a gift for Tink alone and he told Ruby so. The red catcher was to hang only above Tink's bed. Then he moved a little closer to Ruby so he could reach the black and blue catcher. He placed a hand tenderly on her shoulder, keeping her from leaving before he could give her the gift, and slowly lowered it from the wall. His eyes spoke volumes as he turned back to her- screamed tenderness and warmth and care that he didn't know how to express in words. The flush was spreading slowly over his chest again and his pulse thudded in the palm that rested on Ruby's soft shoulder. He placed the Dreamcatcher tenderly in her hands.

"This one is for you and you alone... before you hang either of them... thread a piece of your hair-" He lifted the hand on her shoulder, almost reaching out to touch her glowing hair before stopping himself and lowering it to his side. "And wrap it around the strongest thread in the web." He gestured to his own, and to the dark strand of his long hair that had been braided into the thickest part of the catcher. "They'll keep your dreams pleasant... they keep the shadows from your eyes..." He voice, always a low rumble in his chest, had gone soft, melted into a whisper, as if he was gifting Ruby with a secret. She didn't have to know that the real secret was his joy at being able to help Ruby... to care for her and for Tink in a way the his ancestors had cared for wives and children... not that he had any hopes of having that with Ruby... Dreams maybe... but not hopes.

How could a person not appreciate something so beautiful? Each dreamcatcher was a piece of art in and of itself. They made the wall a wash of colors and designs that you just couldn't help admiring and appreciating. At least, Ruby couldn't. She'd never seen so many dreamcatchers in one place at one time, and the ones she'd seen in her own walk of life hadn't been nearly as beautiful as Bear's. Each one got her attention in an entirely new way. Because of some difference in design from the last that made it unique and entirely special. She could have honestly stayed and looked at them for hours and hours, looking into what made each and everyone special and lovely in their own right. But that wasn't what she was there for, now was it? Hence why she'd picked out the red dreamcatcher for Tink and, sadly enough, why she would have to leave the black dreamcatcher with the lovely blue beads behind. It was a shame, yes, but it was Tink's welfare that she was much more worried about. Her dreams and her peaceful slumber.

Ruby took the red dreamcatcher, handling it gently and gingerly so she didn't ruin it. It would have been a horrible shame to ruin something so nice with just a slip of the hand. She nodded her understand when he said that it was only for Tink, meant to hang only above the little girl's bed. When he moved closer to her, she couldn't help but blush again and wonder just what he was doing. You didn't get so close to someone for no reason, right? And then, as if she couldn't make a bigger fool of herself, his hand was on her shoulder. There was a large chance now that her cheeks had bloomed in shades of pink and red. Why oh why did her feelings have to read so vividly on her face? She looked up into his eyes when he turned back to her and she had to admit that she wasn't sure what sort of look it was...it almost seemed like a warmth and caring that she hadn't necessarily seen in someone's eyes when they looked at her. It was nice. Almost forgetting how to think, she got back to reality and took the black and blue dreamcatcher when he gave it to her.

Her ability to speak hadn't really come back and she could only stand there, looking up at him and nodding at the things he told her. The black dreamcatcher was a gift for her and she thought it exceedingly sweet for him to give it to her. "A piece of hair around the strongest thread in the web...I understand." Her voice was also soft as she smiled softly up at him. It had been a long time since someone had cared for her that way. Cared about what might have been troubling her. She hadn't realized how much she'd missed it until right then.

"Thank you. I really appreciate it." And then, all at once, Ruby leaned up to kiss him on the cheek. It was soft, it was gentle...but it was also genuine. Once she was back just standing in front of him, that smile still graced her features as did the slight blush in her cheeks.

Bear barely had time to admire the slight blush on Ruby's cheeks before Tink skipped from her room. She looked so adorable in her t-shirt, the sleeves almost reaching her elbows and the bottom almost reaching her knees. Bear's smile split from ear to ear and he picked up the little girl to smack a big kiss to her forehead. He couldn't help himself. She was just too cute. He sat down at the table, the that held Ruby so beautifully groaning slightly under his and Tink's weight. He sighed.

"I'm not meant for such dainty furniture... Or maybe it's you, Tink..." He playfully pinched the sides of her tummy, where he would have liked to find more meat on her bones. It wasn't healthy for children to have such little nutrition... "You like eating so much you're gonna break the chair!" He Puffed up his cheeks and tried to make himself look chubby- not so easy when you were over six foot and all muscle... He probably looked more beastly than pudgy. He let his breath out in one big whoosh, making tendrils of blond hair flutter around Tink's face. He nuzzled a cheek to hers, almost that way an animal would, and turned her so that Ruby could fix her cuts and scrapes. He wrapped his arms tight around her, almost like a vice, and whispered ominously in her.

"Now. You must be very still while Ruby cleans your cuts or you will never get any cinnamon! Besides... If your pudgy little self squirms too much, we may find our bums on the floor instead of in this chair..." He smiled at Ruby over Tink's tiny shoulder, giving her the silent go ahead to start sterilizing.

Ruby couldn't help but notice how homey the whole scene looked. Tink, tiny girl that she was in her big old t-shirt, being picked up by Bear who kissed her on the forehead. It reminded her of a father and daughter, quite honestly. She liked that sort of sight. It was more than welcome in a world that was recovering from being broken to pieces. Family was important in any sort of world...even if, technically speaking, she, Bear and Tink weren't a family. But she wouldn't have minded them being that way. Not at all. There just wasn't any way to really express her feelings.

"Well I'm sorry that girls don't tend to be over six foot and be made of all muscle. That didn't go into the building plans, sorry to say," Ruby said, laughing some. When Tink was accused of being the reason for the groan of the chair, she pouted. Although that was gone fast enough when her stomach was pinched and she couldn't help but laugh. "Hey! Just because I like to eat doesn't mean I'm big enough to break the chair!" She felt his breath against her as her hair flew up around her face. She nuzzled her cheek back against Bear's, an undeniable grin on her face. But then she was being turned toward Ruby and she was trapped with his arms around her.

"For the last time, I'm not pudgy!" Tink said, making it a point to squirm a little at first before sitting still. Ruby, in the meantime, picked up the gauze and wet it with some rubbing alcohol. She pulled off the band-aids that were a bit worn out by then. "Alright, munchkin, this is going to sting a little bit. But sit still and it'll be done before you know it." With that, she dabbed the scrapes on Tink's knees and her arms, pleased to find that they were healing up quite nicely. Once that was done, she placed new and clean bandages over them. "There, all done. Now you can have your oatmeal with cinnamon. And if you finish it all, I'll let you have your present."

After making sure Tink was nice and still for Ruby, Bear realeased her and relaxed back into the flimsy chair- very carefully. He linked his fingers behind his head, reaching for a bite everyonce in a while, but really just taking in the atmosphere- the feeling of peace and contentment. It was times like these when his non-talkative attitude seemed to fit the mood and moment. Tink's arms were free so she could eat her oatmeal, the much needed nourishment only made sweeter by cinnamon. The smell of sausage and sweets filled the air, as well as the scent of the woman and the girl that permeated the house. Bears house always smelled like woodsmoke and man. Here, he could inhale and sense the lightly feminine smell that Ruby always seemed to give off. He looked over at her as she finished cleaning Tink's scrapes. She was so gentle with the little girl. So gentle with everyone really. He couldn't help but wonder if she'd always been that way. He'd heard rumors that she'd been rather wild when she was younger... But she was so beautiful. So serene and caring now. It made Bear wonder what had changed her. If the rumors were true, that was...

Bear smiled softly and took a bite of sausage, lightly patting Tink's lower back in an idle way and simply enjoying being in Ruby's kitchen... and pondering how in the world he would ever tell her what he felt for her.

The atmosphere really was very nice. Calm, peaceful. And, of course, pleasant. It was hard not to notice, but it was certainly something to be enjoyed. Once Tink had her arms free, she started eating her oatmeal, and rather enthusiastically at that. The cinnamon made it that much better. Something sweet was always a treat and a luxury. Ruby smiled when Bear look at her before getting up to put away the medical supplies, starting on her breakfast once she was back at the table. She wondered just what he thought about when he looked at her like that. Before, she would have had the confidence...or rather arrongance, to believe that he was thinking about how she looked. But she wasn't like that anymore. Arrogance had been traded in for a more gentle demeanor. Yes, the rumors were true, but she really had changed for the better. Grown up. And that was good, otherwise she probably wouldn't have been able to handle life after the virus.

Once everybody was done, Tink looked over at Ruby eagerly. "Can I have my present now?" Ruby just laughed and smiled. True to her word, she got the red and white dreamcatcher from the other room, setting it in the little girl's hands. "There. Your very own dreamcatcher. Bear made that and let me bring it home just for you, so what do you say?" she said. Tink beamed then, throwing her arms around Bears neck in a hug. "Thank you! It's so pretty!" Tink scrambled down out of his lap then, practically bouncing. "Can you help me put it up, Bear? Pretty please?" Even though she'd asked it as a question, it was more like a demand. She tugged on his hand, wanting him to get up.

"Go ahead," Ruby urged, "I'll just clean up." She gathered up the plates and bowls just as Tink pulled Bear into her room. If only he knew that she didn't just want his help with the dreamcatcher. She wanted to talk to him about Ruby too.

Tink's room was of a good enough size. Simple, and yet girly. She'd decorated her walls with little trinket's she'd found or had before the virus. Shiny rocks, pieces of jewelry, old pictures. But there was space enough above her bed for the dream catcher. "So how are you supposed to put it up?" she asked Bear, looking up at him.

Bear smiled at Ruby and ate the last bit of oatmeal in his bowl before letting himself be dragged off to Tink's room. It was a small room, like most of the others in the feather homes, but it read Tink all over the walls, pictures from before the virus and lots of pretty shiny things. There were picture of who he supposed were her parents. They looked like nice people. He saw that she got her pretty blond hair from her mother and her eyes came straight out of her father's face. yes, overall the looked like lovely little family but bear found himself oddly jealous of Tink's father... he would've loved to have raised this little girl... But that was all in the past. And Tink's father wasn't in the picture anymore, Veheo rest with him... but in order for Tink to be his daughter of sorts, Bear had to find the words to tell Ruby how he felt. Guts he had. Words... well, since the accident that left the burn scars on his back, he'd learned to choose his words and battles more wisely.

Taking the delicate little catcher in his hands, Bear sat on Tink's little bed and motioned for the girl to come closer. He lay the catcher in her lap and began explaining the story of it too her.

"Did you know, Tink, what my people believe about dreams? The Cheyenne have a story about an old woman, a grandmother in fact, and a spider. The grandmother's name was Nokomis. She lived like all Cheyenne do, in a tent, and beside he sleeping space, the spider quietly spun his web in the same space, which he thought to be his. Each day, Nokomis watched the spider at work, quietly spinning away. One day as she was watching him, her grandson came in. 'Nokomis-iya!' he shouted, glancing at the spider. He stomped over to the spider, picked up a shoe and went to hit it." Bear raised his hand as though to squash a spider on the wall but stopped before his palm made contact.

"No-keegwa" Bear whispered in the frail voice of an old lady, "Don't hurt him." Bear's face took on the quizical expression of a young boy.

" 'Nokomis, why do you protect the spider?' asked the little boy. The old lady smiled but did not answer and , eventually, the boy grew tired and left. Now, the spider was actually the Great Spirit! Veheo often takes the shape of a spider and that was why Nokomis had stopped her grandson. Veheo was very grateful of course and thanked Nokomis for saving his life. He said to her, 'For many days you have watched me spin and weave my web. You have admired my work. In return for saving my life, I will give you a gift.' He smiled his special spider smile and moved away, spinning as he went.

Soon the moon glistened on a magical silvery web moving gently in the window. "See how I spin?" he said. 'See and learn, for each web will snare bad dreams. Braid a piece of your hair here, in the small hole, and only good dreams will go through it. This is my gift to you. Use it so that only good dreams will be remembered. The bad dreams will become hopelessly entangled in the web.' And He left the web to keep Nokomis's dreams safe, just as I am leaving this web to keep your dreams safe." Bear smiled at Tink before turning towards her pillow and searching for one of the hairs that generally fell out while a person slept. He found one long enough and handed it carefully to the little girl.

"Now. All you do is thread this around the little hole in the middle and hand the web above your pillow. It will keep your dreams sweet, little one. I have one too, you know. I have lots of them. And they keep my dreams full of the things I love most." At this thought, Bear's thoughts turned treacherously to Ruby and the dishes that clinked in the other room.

Tink went over to sit on the bed, looking down at the dreamcatcher in her lap before looking back up at Bear. From the sounds of things, she was going to hear a story. And she loved stories! Especially if they were somehow or another connected to presents.

She listened intently to the story as he began, tucking the character's names away so that she'd understand. And of course, her little imagination put together the scenes in her head. She saw the grandmother, Nokomis, in her tent with the spider and his web in her head. And then the grandson was introduced. She watched Bear raise his hand, like he was going to smush an imaginary spider on the wall. But his hand never touched the wall. Because the grandmother stopped her grandson from killing the spider...or rather the Great Spirit. Still endlessly interested, Tink listened to the rest of the story, her feet kicking back and forth a little bit. It was a sign of concentration, oddly enough. When the story was over, she smiled. "Wow, that's really cool!" Who knew such a little thing like the web could keep bad dreams away from a person while they were asleep?

When he gave her one of the hairs from her pillow, she pinched it between her fingers, finding that it was a bit hard to keep track of. Her hair was so blonde that single strands were often hard to see. Very carefully, she threaded the hair around the hole in the middle of the dreamcatcher, trying to make sure that it wouldn't fall out. Pleased with her work, she got up off the bed and went over to the wall where her headboard was. She took a thumbtack (the only thing she had to hang things up) that matched the dreamcatcher and attached to the wall, right above where she rested her head at night. "There! Perfect."

Without a second thought, she sat down again. Although this time, it was in Bear's lap. "So, if yours keeps your dreams safe too...what do you dream about? Like, what are the things that you love the most?" That question was asked for a very specific reason. Because if Ruby was the subject of some of his dreams, then she'd have her answer. "Are there any people that you dream about?"

Bear smiled as Tink's little hands so carefully threaded that pale blond hair into the middle of her web. She seemed to have soaked in every word of his story, a story he had always loved hearing and telling. He smiled even wider when she picked out a thumbtack to use. The matching color was proof that she was female. He chuckled a bit at that and caught her in his arms when she sat in his lap. He wondered if he could tell her who he really dreamed about. He figured he'd start out with safer people and move on to the more complicated answers. He looked at the ceiling as if pondering what he'd say, swaying, almost rocking the little girl in his lap.

"Well... I dream about before the virus a lot... about my family and my culture... I dream about stories like the one I just told you, the stories of my people... I dream about love and peace.... I dream about animals and about working...." Bear looked at Tink, a slight smile on his face. "I dream about you a lot... And about Ruby..." He cleared his throat as the heat crept up his chest again. There. He'd admitted out loud that he dreamed about Ruby... There was no taking it back now.

Of course she'd soaked up every bit of the story. It was a good story! No doubt she'd be thinking of it a lot in the near future, probably when she tried to get to sleep at night. But that wasn't what she was thinking about right then. She was thinking about figuring out just how he felt about Ruby. It was part of the spying thing. Besides, it wasn't as if he couldn't trust her. She'd keep the secret safe...for awhile. Ruby did have the right to know if Bear really liked her! She waited patiently for his answer as he sort of rocked her in his lap. And all the while those big blue eyes were looking at him curiously.

The things he said were perfectly normal things to think about. She dreamed about her family a lot too. Her mom and her dad and how nice it was back before the virus. Some of the other things she didn't know too much about, like working and the animals and such, but they had to be nice if Bear dreamed about them. When he said that he dreamed about her, it made her grin. But the final answer was the one she'd been waiting for. "I bet you dream about how awesome I am. Don't deny it."

But after few more moments, she tilted her head curiously, but still smiling. "You really like Ruby, don't you?" she asked. "And don't lie. I see how you look at her. Sort of like my daddy used to look at my mom..."

That caught Bear off guard. He knew Tink was smart and mischievous and observant. But he hadn't thought the little imp would pick up on the blushes and the stolen glances. He coughed slightly, one of those nervous coughs that seemed to pop up when a person was put on the spot. How was he supposed to explain that he was head over heels in love with Ruby? Tink was smart... but was she smart enough to understand what that meant? That it meant he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her- Ruby as his wife... and even Tink as his daughter.

Bear shifted Tink onto the bed and stood up so he could pace the length of her room- only about two steps with legs as long as his were. He pondered what to say and finally decided on just spitting it out. If he could practice the words on Tink, in a way, wouldn't it be easier to decide what he'd say to Ruby when the time came?

"Tink... you're a smart little imp, you know that? Yes I dream about how awesome you are..." He smiled nervously at her, "And I dream about how awesome it would be to live here, with you and with Ruby..." He crouched in front of Tink and placed his large hands gently on her shoulders. "You just said I look at her like your father used to look at your mother... can you understand what I mean when I want to be like that with her?" He stood again and started pacing, ducking so his head wouldn't bump the ceiling and creasing his brow as he thought what to say. "I want to... well... to wake up every morning and make breakfast with the two of you... I want to tuck you in under your Dreamcatcher every night and see yours and Ruby's smiles before I go to bed... instead of just in my dreams..." He stopped his pacing and stared at a photo of Tink's family on the wall. His voice took on a dreamy, almost sad quality when he continued.

"Tink, I really really like Ruby... but... I don't speak much you know... and it's hard for me to say exactly what I want to. I doubt you've experience butterflies yet... but when you do you'll know what I mean." He sat back down on the bed and opened his arms so Tink could crawl into them again.

It was difficult, the battle between the body and the mind. The rational part of her mind was trying to tell her to stop herself, to say that they should stop. But her body was encouraging her to keep going. Her body had won out, it seemed, making her grind her hips against his and match his movement when he pushed back. It was almost sinful, how good the heat, friction and pressure felt. It even made her grip on him with her legs slacken a bit. Had she been standing, her legs would have likely given out. Luckily enough, he was still holding her up.

Though they wouldn't be up for long. It wasn't long before they were both on the floor, her back on a soft bearskin as he pinned her down. Her body pressed against his as he held her hips against his. She kissed him back deeply, reveling in the feeling of his hand tracing down her back on her bare skin. Then her skin met the soft, lush fur of the bearskin as his hand ran down her back and then to her hip, continuing its caress all the way down her leg. Her hands ran through his hair again as she kept pressing her hips against his harder.

One of her hands ran down his back some, her fingers tenderly gentle over the scars on the skin there. This was the first time that she'd ever touched them, though she'd seen them before. That day was just a day of firsts, it seemed.

Bear stilled. He'd done the same thing only moments before but this was something different. This was a stilling of lips, a locking of the jaw and body going completely rigid. He slowly, painfully sat back, removing himself from contact with Ruby a and going a bit glassy eyed. No one had ever touucheed his scar's before. And unlike having Ruby's hands in his hair, this was not an alltogether pleasant sensation. He was proud of what his scars rerepresented, but that didn't mean Ruby wouldn't be disgusted by them. He had learned a valuable lesson that day and the following year had shaped him into the man he was today. That didn't mean some one as beautiful as Ruby would understand something so ugly. Bear stood, walking over to where his shirt lay near the door and covering the offensive burn scars.

"I'm sorry about that, sweetheart..... I know they're not the prettiest thing to look at.... or to feel..." He kept his back to where she lay on the floor, the flush of red washing over his chest again. "They made me the man i am... but i know they're ugly..." he turned to face her, a sheepish grin on his face and a sad look in his eyes.

When he stopped moving, her rational thought started to kick in again. She drew her hands away, instantly assuming that she'd done something wrong. And she had...touching the scars on his back. "I'm sorry..." she said automatically, but it didn't stop him from moving away from her. But she did still mean the words that she said. She hadn't at all meant to do something that he wouldn't have liked. Ruby hadn't known that no one had ever touched his scars before. She just hadn't been able to help herself, and she instantly regretted not thinking about her actions before actually letting them happen. She sat up then, watching him go back over to where his shirt was on the floor. No more words would come as he put the shirt on, covering the scars on his back as if they were something to offend. Something to repel her. But they weren't. And it wasn't just her background in medicine that made it that way, either.

She wasn't sure what to say. Was there a right thing to say? She just kept quiet as he talked, but when he looked back at her with that sad look in his eyes...something just snapped in her. Seeing him look like that made her feel so bad for doing what she'd done. It hadn't been her intention at all to upset him. Still, it was her fault that he was looking so sad right then. Ruby looked up at him, the beginnings of tears forming in her eyes. She couldn't help it. It wasn't long before those tears were rolling down her face.

She got up off the floor, not sure as to whether or not she should get any closer to him. "I'm sorry," she began. "But I don't think they're ugly. And they don't bother me. They're a part of you...and there's nothing about you that would ever drive me away." She was trying to reassure him. But unfortunately, it wasn't helping to reassure herself, hence why she was still crying. "...I didn't mean to do something that would upset you. And I'm sorry." She tucked her hair back behind her ear, looking at the floor then because she didn't want him to see her crying like that.

Bear's jaw clencheed. If he'd been the type cry, the sweet words coming from Ruby's mouth would have had him sobbing. So much feeling and acceptance. He hadn't thought about the fact that she had probably seen her fair share of wounds and scars, hadn't even begun to contemplate that she might like the scars because they were a part of him. He crossed the room in a single step, taking her into his arms, tucking a finger under her chin and kissing away her tears.

"No, no, no, sweetheart... You didn't do anything wrong. I jumped to conclusions and i'm sorry. Please, don't cry, Ruby. Please, sweetheart, don't cry." He nestled her into his arms, his chin resting lightly on her head, her head against his chest and his hand stroking lightly through her hair.

She'd meant what she said. Bear was a wonderful person and he was someone that she cared about a lot. There wasn't one thing about him that she'd ever be repulsed by. It just wasn't possible. She liked him just how he was, scars and all. Sure, Ruby wished that someone or something hadn't hurt him, but it was a part of who he was now. Part of the man that she cared for...loved, even. She was lucky that he cared for her the way he did, so why would she ever push him away? Ruby was still looking down at the floor, so she didn't see him come any closer. But she did feel his arms around her. And she felt his lips, kissing her tears away. It was undoubtedly touching.

Hearing him call her sweetheart, having him holding her close, it was more than enough to make her stop crying little by little. It was just so reassuring and so comforting to be with him that way. There were only a few stray tears on her cheeks as she rested her head against his chest. His touch was so soothing. So comforting. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cry. It's just that seeing you look so sad made me upset." She wrapped her arms around him then. "I don't like seeing you anything less than happy..."

For probably only the fifth or sixth time in his life, Bear felt himself tearing up. He'd found an amazing woman, one that accepted his culture and the scars that it had given him. He never wanted to let her go. He nestled his cheek into her hair, his hand tracing her spine, tenderely this time. With her here in his arms, he found the strength to say what he'd really wanted to say earlier.

"Ruby. I love you. I love you and I love Tink and I want to be with you." He tipped up her face, so beautiful with tear streaks still on her cheeks. He smiled warmly at her. "Move in with me. You and Tink and I. What do you say?"

This was something that she'd thought she'd never find in this new world. A man that she cared about so much that cared about her in return. She was so lucky to have found Bear, to have him in her life. She accepted him in his entirety. His culture, his way of thinking. Even the scars. And that wasn't going to change. If she had her way, she wouldn't ever let him go. Ruby smiled to herself as he nestled his cheek in her hair and ran his hand over her back. Was there anything more perfect than that?

What he said next, though, threw her a little off kilter. It really did make her wonder if she was imagining the words or actually hearing them. He loved her? It seemed to good to be true. But the way he was looking at her and smiling at her...it had to be true. And it made her smile sunnily up at him. The words came easily to her mind and it felt like the most natural thing in the world to say. "I love you too." A bit of a blush colored her cheeks. "And I'd love to move in with you. I'm sure Tink won't mind it at all."
