Jax felt like he'd been going non-stop since the beginning of time. He had pretty good endurance, and could go quite awhile without food, sleep, etc, but like anyone else, he needed a break sometimes. He'd spent the morning and greater part of the afternoon at the power plant, making sure that things were in the best shape they could be in. He'd also had some of the other tribe members showing him some of the basics about the plant. Unlike Azrael, he wanted to try and learn as much as he could about the way everything worked so that he wouldn't have to complete rely on other people.
When he got home he took a quick nap and a shower before venturing from his room to wander around the lodge. It had been a few days since he'd really seen Sumi or been able to talk with her, so when he saw her sitting by the window in one of the lounge areas he went right over to her. He crouched at her side and leaned his head over to look at the book she was reading. It was all in Japanese, and he couldn't understand a lick of it. Although she'd taught him a few words he was often too busy to put any serious effort into it. He knew Arabic, Hebrew, and a smattering of a few other languages but none of them had ever come in handy since the virus destroyed things.
"How are you doing beautiful?" He looked up at her with a smile, "Do you like this place better than the woods?" He laughed goodheartedly, knowing that living in the woods and on the move had perhaps been harder for her than for anyone else in the tribe. When he'd first agreed to let her stay with them he'd received a lot of flac from the other tribe members. Flack that he of course shut down immediately. In Jax's mind she was not the liability that the others thought she was. If it came to something like that, then he could easily leave her behind, and therefore she was not a liability.
He didn't explain his reasons for keeping her around to anyone, not even Sumi herself. And by now her presence was a fact that most people accepted, at least around Jax. He was completely enthralled by the fact that she was genuinly unafraid of him. He couldn't say that for most men he was around, let alone women. Her lack of fear, combined with the fact that she was one of the most fragile people he'd ever met attracted him to her very strongly. As a result, he let her get away with almost anything and gave her anything she asked for if he could find some way to get it for her. It was her general weakness and the way that he spoiled her that made the other tribe members think that she was a liability, and perhaps they were right, but Jax was in complete denial.
"Did you want to take a ride with me?" As nice as the lodge was, Jax had seen enough of the indoors lately and was hoping she'd consent.
