Week Fourteen -- Thursday
Who: Blaze and Hazard
Where: The roof of the hospital
When: Thursday late afternoon
Why: Blaze and Hazard do some catching up after the war

Blaze was exhausted to the core. The last month had been like hell on earth, with the war...and especially with the death of Tootles. It wasn't like he was particularly close to the kid, but that didn't make anything easier; in fact, in some respects it made things that much harder. During the war he'd taken any mission that the Wolves would give him, anything to take his mind off of the things that he'd seen in that alleyway.

Over the last few weeks he felt like he'd lost touch with himself, and most importantly with the people that he cared about the most - his brother and Sensei. Sensei and his relationship had become distanced, distracted and almost void of the exciting warmth that new relationships always had. He'd let so many things come in the way of him and the people that he still had. The truth was that the whole Tootles incident had left him in a cold shock. The past few years he'd managed to move past the trauma of the virus and burying his friends and family, but that day in the alley was too clear a reminder of the fragility of the life that they had in Sundance.

Since the mysterious retreat of the Mountain Lions, the Wolves had begun their work to rebuild the city. Blaze had spent every second of his waking hours repairing things, moving debris, bodies, anything that needed to be done to return some semblance of normality to their town.

It wasn't until late Thursday afternoon that he felt he couldn't go on anymore without some kind of break. He climbed to the top of the hospital that they'd called home for the last three years. When he reached the roof he laid down on the hot cement and stared up at the clouds. Eventually his vision became blurry with the tears that had built up in his eyes.

Hazard had discovered how being in charge of certain things gave him a power rush and protecting his tribe was what he wanted to do. He made his rounds checking the hospital and caught sight of his brother heading to the roof of the hospital. A while passed since the two really talked and so Hazard followed Blaze from a distance. His hands slid into his pockets as he climbed the stairs quietly and paused once he got to the top. Thing was, he had little idea what to say. Pointless asking what he'd been up to because they all did the same these days.

Judging from the look on his brother's face, Hazard figured he was moping or something. Now that was something he could not allow to happen and younger brother duties called for him to stop this. "If you make that face any longer, it'll get stuck," he quoted their mother. "I've seen more attractive turds." He sat down besides Blaze, legs crossed and took a pebble from the floor, flicking it upwards and catching it. "I may have to smack sense into you." Affectionately, of course. His brother looked weaker than he actually was and the years he had on Hazard meant he could be beaten up with some effort.

He heard the door to the roof open and close behind him, but he didn't bother to look and see who it was. His tear-filled gaze looked up to see the face of his little brother. Hazard must have followed me, that's just like him to do something like that, Blaze thought. Blaze rolled his eyes and then closed them to use his fists to rub the tears away.

Blaze folded his hands behind his head, and remained on his back to stare at the sky. "I'd like to see you try." Blaze managed to grin a little and offered a glance to Hazard. Not only had his relationship with Sensei become strained and distant, but his relationship with his llittle brother had become almost non-existant. In fact, ever since they had returned from their winter journey it seemed as though things had been somehow different between them. They never talked anymore, about anything.

One of the things that made Tootles' death so difficult was that Blaze hadn't really had any kind of relationship with the kid. Even after he'd discovered that Tootles really was his son he had made no real effort for them to have a relationship. Blaze was just now starting to realize how much he had, and how much he would, miss out on. He turned his head to look at Hazard for a moment.

"Have you gotten taller?" Blaze pushed himself up to sit next to his brother. He brought his knees to his chest and wrapped his arms around them. "Casper, there are some things I should probably tell you." He'd been a shitty excuse for a big brother lately, and it was time that he was honest with Hazard- after all, Hazard wasn't really a kid anymore and so Blaze felt that maybe he could try and talk to him about the things that had been going on.

Good, he made his brother smile, if not for that long. Hazard did want to maintain their friendship although things might not be the same as they were previously. For one, he felt different, more mature after the death of some of the Carrion and others. More death scared him and he needed to improve his own efforts to make sure nothing horrible like that happened to more people he liked. Losing his brother was unacceptable...He was positive he would go crazy should he be all alone. Hazard was determined not to let that happen, and therefore he protected Blaze whether he knew it or not.

He looked at his brother as he asked if he had gotten taller. "Yeah, a little," he said. An inch or two, and hopefully he'd grow even taller in the months to come. Things to tell him? He wondered what they could be. A lot had happened since they last spoke and he hoped it was nothing serious. "Okay. What?" He pulled up his knees and leaned forward to rest his arms on them, waiting for his brother to share. If there were any other important things that had happened recently, Hazard wanted to know if he hadn't discovered them already. He'd been distracted by other things and people, which he felt guilty.

Blaze sighed and then was quiet for awhile. He looked towards the horizon, squinting as if he was trying to see something that was really far away. He felt that it was time to be honest with his brother, but that conviction didn't make it any easier for him to say the things he was about to. He thought it would be easier to tell him the good before the bad, and so he started with his relationship with Sensei.

"Sensei and me...I... I mean we're together." Blaze wet his lips and turned his head to see the reaction he'd get from his brother. He wasn't sure what Hazard would think. They'd been raised around all kinds of people, a lot of whom the general public reffered to as "freaks". They'd been raised to accept all kinds of people, but he feared that it might be different with him. Then, to make sure he was being clear, and also because the thought just struck him, he spoke again. "I think I love him..." His words were quieter and he looked away from Hazard, resting his chin on his knees and closing his eyes for a moment.

Hazard waited, understanding that it might be difficult for his brother to talk about personal problems because it was hard for him too. There were some things that were especially hard for him to say to an older brother, mainly about girls. In fact he hadn't had a conversation with Alex about them, despite him starting to think about them in that way. Then Alex mentioned Sensei and a memory clicked in Hazard's mind, though he doubted he could ever forget what he saw. It was hard to know what to say to that when he already came to that conclusion. "I know," he said at first. He had little intention of explaining how he knew although his brother was probably going to ask. "I saw you kissing." Still an uncomfortable thing to have seen.

He also had pressing issues on his mind when it came to Blaze and Sensei regarding the tribe. "Does he know this? Does he feel the same way?" he asked. "If not, you need to tell him right away." His saying so was no doubt strange for his brother to hear and he decided to explain himself. "You have to consider the Carrion too. If you distract Sensei from being our leader, then that will hurt everyone. I don't want his judgement fucked up because you're being an ass, okay? So be with him and be there for him because that's your job. No being a pussy and wimping out, got it?" That being said, he leaned back on his hands. "What was the other thing you had to tell me?"

Blaze was prepared for Hazard to shut down, perhaps even be rude to him. The last thing he'd been expecting was understanding and an encouraging ultimatum. He tried to think of a time that Hazard could have possibly seen them kissing. He thought that they'd been overly careful, but then again, it was Hazard he was talking about. Dark Flash the spy! Blaze shook his head in mild amusement.

He was silent in surprise at the way that Hazard was talking, "Yeah, he knows. I mean... I haven't said that," those three words, "to him, but we know we like each other. At least, I hope he still feels the same way." It had been too long really, since he'd had any kind of intimacy with Sensei. They'd hardly even talked for a couple of weeks, except for when Blaze had given him updates on their search for Nori. He really missed him, just being around him. When Hazard gave Blaze orders concerning Sensei, he was so shocked that he could do nothing more than nod. Hazard was right, if only for the sake of the tribe, Blaze and Sensei had to figure out where they stood with each other. He couldn't help but smile a little at Hazard's way of supporting him.

For a moment Blaze had almost forgotten the other thing he'd wanted to tell Hazard. He closed his eyes and looked away, it gave him chills just to think of it. "You know Junk? Do you remember how her and I were before the virus? I found an old letter from her a week or so before the war started. It explained everything. Her father had stopped sending her letters to me and giving her my letters. He didn't want me around her because I got her pregnant." He paused for a moment before continuing.

"Tootles is...was... apparently my son." He could hardly say those last words and he felt his eyes start to burn with the threat of tears again. "I didn't even know, I had no fucking idea, really..." He shook his head, and felt a tear spill down his cheek. "Then when the war started, I mean I hardly knew the kid. When Sensei decided to take everyone to the farm I had to go get Junk and Tootles. Even though she hated me I couldn't leave them there. Junk had closed up the sewer entrance so I couldn't get in that way, I had to take the streets." His jaw tightened and he swallowed the turn that his stomach had taken as he moved on to the next part.

"I didn't get there in time... those Mountain Lion drifters and Wolf soldiers were on my heels and there was already this other Mountain Lion guy there with Junk. He... Tootles was shot, and there was blood everywhere. I couldn't even understand what was happening at first. We hid in an alleyway and Tootles, my son, he died in the arms of that Mountain Lion." Blaze couldn't help it now, there were tears streaming down his face. His chin quivered as he stared ahead at the sky. "There was so much blood, and I didn't know what to do... Junk wouldn't let me near him, she was screaming and hitting me and everyone was covered in blood and Tootles... oh God, his fucking face, they shot him in the head..." Blaze put his face down on his knees and sobbed.

Hazard loved his brother and would do anything to protect him, and he knew the feeling was mutual. That gave him a lot of strength, and the support of his family-like tribe encouraged him to do whatever was necessary for them. He was brave and loved deeply, that much he knew. It was good to hear Blaze found someone despite it being his leader. "Of course he does." Sensei was not the type of man to abandon feelings so readily, Hazard was sure. His brother seemed to agree with his order and Hazard felt relieved, for the Carrion's sake. Good. They'd sort everything out and life was to continue as normal without any unnecessary drama, though he was willing to take it upon himself to play peacemaker.

He listened as Blaze spoke again, this time about Junk. So there was an old letter? Interesting. His theory was confirmed at last. "I kind of knew that too," he said. "He looked like you somewhat." Part of a spy's duty was to have keen observational skills and he prided himself on noticing certain things others might not. His brother told him what happened to Junk and the boy and Hazard's stomach churned. Nausea swept over him. That was awful. No one should hurt a child, he thought and his fists clenched. What was even more horrible was Blaze's depressed reaction. His brother was supposed to be strong and the Mountain Lions reduced him to this. It infuriated Hazard.

As Blaze sobbed, Hazard cautiously placed an arm across his shoulders to comfort him. "Show me who shot him," he said. "I'll show him pain... and then I'll kill him." It was decided. They could have had a family, Hazard thought. He would have taken care of Junk and Tootles with Blaze and they'd all live in the hospital... but that was not going to happen now. "No one gets away with hurting my family." Or anyone he cared about. The thought of someone hurting Gemini was more than he could stand.

Blaze really appreciated Hazard's support concerning Sensei. It had been somewhat unexpected and it meant a lot to him. The fact that he was even able to talk to his brother, talk to someone about all of these things that had been running around in his for weeks, was an incredible relief.

Blaze sniffled and wiped his tears away with his wrist as Hazard spoke to him. He slipped his arm under Hazard's and gave his brother a squeeze. He took a deep breath and shook his head. "As much as that person deserves those things, there's no way of knowing who it was. It could have been anyone. Besides, the Mountain Lions are gone, it's over." He smiled at Hazard. Though it disturbed him a little to hear his brother talk in such a way, the strength that his little brother was conveying made him proud. He wiped his eyes again and let his arm slide from Hazard's shoulders. "Thanks for listening to me, I'm sorry to be like this..."

It was important that Blaze found some happiness because he seemed to take everything that had happened to heart more than Hazard, in a different way, thus needed a boost. Hazard dropped his arm from around his brother although his expression was still a concerned one. "Right," he said. It was not over, as long as the person who shot Tootles was still alive. He had Alice to think about as well even though she was not in the same tribe as them anymore. Still. He clenched his fists as he remembered her note to him and wondered what he could do.

"It's understandable. I'd be depressed too if someone killed my son," Hazard said. "But you protected your family as much as possible." For that, he was proud of his brother. "You continue to try your hardest to protect your family and prevent bad things from happening....and so will I." An idea popped into his mind and he decided to mess with his brother's mind to cheer him up, hopefully. "With the baby on the way, I have to double my efforts." Oh, he was being so cruel to Blaze, but sometimes it was necessary to have something startle a person back on track.

As much as he admired the maturity of his little bro he couldn't help but be a little disturbed by his thirst for revenge. As odd as it sounded, Blaze would rather not find out who it was that had killed Tootles. It wouldn't bring the kid back, and it wouldn't change the fact that Blaze had never known him.

Blaze shrugged with a sigh when Hazard said that he had done what he could. Blaze couldn't agree with him on that. He'd never been there for Junk or Tootles, and when it came down to it he had done nothing other than bring them out into the dangerous street, even if it was unintentional. Blaze nodded, "I hope I can do better..."

Blaze's brow knitted with a kind of disgusted confusion when Hazard said his last words. "What the fuck are you talking about?" He hadn't even considered the idea that his brother may be looking at girls, let alone... ugh. He shook his head, not really wanting to think about it, but still wanting an answer.

Sides of himself he hadn't expected came to the foreground when necessary. Some of them were good yet there was the odd one Hazard did not like. Thinking about girls in a more sexual way was distracting and a little disturbing because it happened so often. He had to survive and this was not beneficial at all, so he was just ignoring it for the time being. His brother's words were too wishy washy for his liking. "Don't hope, just do better," he said. "Don't make me lose my respect for you." He doubted that would happen, but he had to say the warning just in case.

He gave a small smile as he looked at Blaze. "I just wanted to see your reaction. I'm not going to be a dad any time soon," he answered. "She doesn't like me like that." A quick look at the sky indicated that it was getting close to the time when he did his rounds of the traps he set, seeing if any needed to be replaced and what information he could gather. He liked to think that it was a difficult job and himself as being one of the few people who were able to do it correctly. Hazard got to his feet. "It's getting late."

Hazard's warning hit Blaze harder than he was willing to let on. He felt as though he'd been wearing blinders to the fact that there were still other people alive that he cared about and who also cared about him. He felt awful about that, and he was definately going to change it. "Didn't Yoda say there's no such thing as trying?" he grinned a little.

Blaze rolled his eyes with a scoff as his brother backtracked on his little pregnancy remark. "You're such an ass!" He stood and slugged Hazard rather hard on the arm. "Yeah, I should get back to work." and by work, he meant looking for Nori. He grabbed Hazard around the shoulders one more time and gave him a noogie, "I love you bro, don't forget it."
