Week Fourteen -- Tuesday
Who: Peri & Jax
Where: The Winter Camp
When: Tuesday Morning
Why: Peri goes to mourn a friend, Jax goes to decide how much the Camp is worth

Walking back into the camp where she had spent more than a few winters since the virus was bittersweet. This was her and her tribe's winter home after all and though they were not the wealthiest tribe, they certainly were the tribe that enjoyed their time the most no matter where they were and how tough things got. There were many memories that could make her laugh until she cried, but now there was a lurking unseen memory haunting the Winter Camp and she knew she needed to make her peace with it.

When Gypsy had gone missing, Peri knew she was dead. It was cut and dry because if Gypsy had wanted to leave she would have taken Silver, and if she had been captured there would have been word... demands. She had been able to accept that Gypsy was dead, it had hurt, but what Peri had not taken into consideration was how Gypsy might have died. It had been the worst case scenario of how she could have; slowly, painfully, and alone. Nothing could change it, or make it right, but that hadn't helped Peri.

During the war many things had changed, least of all Shepard had left. It had been a sad departure, but one that likely had gone far better than it could have; it had been clean and simple with a quiet sadness, but nothing more. Since then Peri had been trying to find not only her own footing, but her tribes'. They had lost Moe, but thankfully a younger member had picked up the business and was keeping them in a good trading position. They had gained as new leader, who so far was doing well, but would be tested with the new Lions... or Jackals now technically having the Winter Camp. That hadn't stopped Peri from 'trespassing' this morning, but then again Peri was never worried about her own safety and now no one was around to worry for her.

Taking a deep breath she walked into the forest. Her heart was pounding out of her chest and her eyes were watering at the mere idea of where she was headed. She knew where the bear trap was, she always had as she had helped set it on many occasions.

Jax was in a good mood. Of course, it took a lot to get Jax down in the dumps, but today he felt exceptionally optimistic. Yesterday he wrote and sent out a letter to each of the tribe leaders. It was the first real announcement of his presence to the other tribes in the area. He wished that he had the kind of forces with him now that he'd had when he was in charge of New Haven. If he had had that kind of power behind him, Sundance wouldn't have known what hit them. However, that unfortunately was not the case, and right now his tribe was maybe as strong as the war-worn Wolves. It was a different approach that Jax was taking with Sundance, but nothing that he felt he couldn't handle.

He hadn't heard anything back from the tribe leaders. So far, the other tribes had not reacted to the absence of the Mountain Lions (other than the Wolves moving back into the city). It was too early to tell if the lack of activity was a good or bad sign, but Jax felt confident in his knowledge of the other tribes. Besides, right now they were all too weak to do anything damaging to another tribe. His biggest concern was securing a food trade with the Wolves, once that was secured he was home free to work on all of his other plans.

The work that Jax did in his leadership position never really seemed like work to him. It was simply his way of life. When Jax and his comrades first took over the Mountain Lion turf he'd had a unit check out what the locals called the Winter Camp and bring anything useful from there back to the lodge. Now that things were settled down a bit, he wanted to check the place out himself before he met with Jed. He wanted to see just how nice the place was and come up with some kind of a deal with the River Runners that he thought was fair.

Jax saddled his horse and headed out from the lodge in the direction of the Winter Camp. He felt no need to take other men along. The majority of people in Sundance had no idea what he looked like or who he was and he was confident in his ability to protect himself regardless. At the moment he only had enough men to do roaming patrols so there were times when the Jackal perimeter went un-patrolled.

He ran his horse all the way to the camp, enjoying the warm spring weather. When he reached the main building of the camp he rode around it once and then dismounted just south of the place. He decided to water his horse before he did a more thorough run-through of the property. He paused at the edge of the forest, thinking for a moment that he heard something in the distance. Whatever it was that he'd heard he was sure that either the switchblade in his pocket or the hand gun tucked in the back of his jeans would take care of it.

He walked into the forest, leading the horse behind him. He squinted against the sunlight to see a girl walking towards him in the distance. He grinned. She would be the first non-Mountain Lion that he'd seen since coming to Sundance. Unless of course she was an escapee that he'd overlooked; then he'd certainly have some fun. He didn't think that the girl had noticed him, so he stopped walking and called out to her with a friendly wave.

"Hey, hello!" He took a few more steps, watching the girl's body language carefully.

When Peri had come upon the bear trap everything had just stopped; her heart and the sounds around her choked into the breath she couldn’t let go. She could still see the traces of blood on trap and there was no doubt who’s it was. It had been reset, and although Peri wished she could throw it away, she knew that there was a reason for everything the River Runners owned and the bear trap was one such item. It had multiple uses and every single River Runner knew exactly where it was.

That was likely the reason her mind had reeled like it had when the information of Gypsy demise had found it’s way to her. She hadn’t understood how she could have ‘stumbled into it’. A few days later when the tribe had gone to bury their fallen leader Moe had found the reason, two bottles empty and sitting by a chair in the barn. Now she was gone… and Moe had followed her. Peri didn’t have much of a world and hadn’t since the virus, but what had been her world was now mostly gone. The only traces left were her boat and a few friends here and there. It didn’t feel like much, but nothing ever really did feel like much to the petite blonde.

As Peri walked around the trap an overwhelming nausea came over her and she grabbed a near by sapling as she doubled over vomiting whatever was in her stomach that was making it turn so. Regaining herself she shook her head banishing the memories of all of this from her mind like she had her parents.

Turning back she started heading back toward the camp when she heard a man’s voice. She stopped, listening; checking to see if she knew it, but she didn’t and her senses automatically went on alert. Standing up straighter, she walked toward the silhouette of the man in front of her. If anything her stride and confidence grew as she came closer to the other.

Coming out of the clearing she took in the other quickly. “Well hello” she said, her features grinning ever so slightly as if she knew everything and anything there was to know. She didn’t, but Peri was nothing if not an accomplished actress.

He was surprised that the girl before him seemed so confident and friendly, but it didn’t bring his guard down. If he had learned anything in all of the work that he’d done as a double agent in Israel it was to never trust a pretty or seemingly innocent face - those were the people who usually had automatic weapons in their purses or bombs strapped to their chests. He continued to walk towards the girl and finally stopped at a friendly distance. It was probably obvious with the way that he looked her over when they got near enough that he was thinking of more than just personal protection. He’d been scouting out Sundance for a long time, and being in the forest with a bunch of men for over three months wasn’t exactly...entertaining.

“Nice day for a walk isn’t it.” He smiled and reached up to rest his free hand in his horse’s mane. “I didn’t expect to find anyone this far away from the town though. Did you have some kind of business here?” He kept his tone even and his body relaxed. This girl was as cool as a cumcumber and Jax couldn’t help but suspect that she wasn’t from Sundance and had no idea where she was, or the option that could prove to be more fun was that she knew exactly where she was.

"It's a lovely day actually." A smile slide across her features. It was warm, happy, maybe even fuzzy, a definite far cry from the possible uses of the bear trap that was directly behind her. A girl always had to have a back up plan though and she had a very good suspicion that this was one of the Jackals.

"I have business everywhere I go and don't worry I certainly have business here."

Jax nodded and let his gaze leave her for a moment to look around them, as if looking for proof that it was indeed a nice day. Everything was in bloom and rather beautiful. He was so thankful that winter was over.
He scratched the horse's neck and roughed up its mane.

"Oh?" She had his full attention now. "Everywhere you go? You certainly sound important. Tell me though, what is your business here exactly?"

He leaned against the horse. He'd never seen this woman before and he was certain that no one had told him of any business at the Winter Camp. He concluded that she must be bluffing, and for now he was more than content to play her game. In fact, it was almost hard for him to keep a straight face.

"Important would I depend on who you were asking exactly, but I certainly am important to some." Not a lie, she was a very convincing trader that made her own things to trade with almost no overhead.

And she continued not to lie as she answered his question. "Well I came to mourn a friend, something no one can stop me from doing, but while I was here I thought I would see what you lot have done to our winter hideaway." It was a tad blunt and likely a little pushy considering she didn't know the views on trespassing to the other tribe, but she remedied and injustice as always with a very pleasing smile.

The corner of Jax's mouth lifted in a grin. She had confidence, or she at least faked it rather well. He peiced all of her words together. She was apparently a River Runner, if she reffered to the camp as hers... then again she could be a Mountain Lion- but he thought that was unlikely. Something about her just didn't seem the type. When he thought about it he connected the death of the previous RR leader to the friend she was mourning.

"So you're a River Runner? I'm afraid you may have some trouble convincing my boss that this is your hideaway though." He took another step toward her, stepping away from the horse as he did so.

"If you really do know your way around here, maybe you could help me. You see, I was sent here today to take a look at this place and report back. I'd appreciate any information you could give me."

Peri laughed heartily for a moment and then spoke again, "Honestly it's an old barn and house that would normally be condemned, but we like our privacy so being out in the middle of no where suits us. However, if it's so important... I'm sure many tribes would be more than willing to give us a barn for what we give in return. It doesn't really matter to us, the reason we're on the river is that we don't care about possessions or titles."

She shrugged and smiled as he stepped closer, "But we can let them sort that all out... so sure, I'll give you the tour if you'd like."

Jax knew good and well that if the River Runners wanted to stay near Sundance that the Winter Camp was their best option in the winter. The Mountain Lions were close enough to provide them with supplies if they needed it, they could have their boats in a secure location, etc. "You make it sound so wonderful."

Yes, them, he thought with a scoffing laugh. "That's great," He smiled, "It'll make my job a lot less boring."

Jax turned to head back towards the house, "So, do you have a name or do people just call you River Runner?"

There was no doubt that the Winter Camp was in the perfect location for the River Runners, but Peri was also well aware that they had made arrangements long ago for where they may go if things with the Lions didn't work out. It was not ideal, but their small tribe didn't need much to survive. Hell. last winter had proved that when they had ended up with only half the supplies they normally had. Everyone had been a little skinny after winter, but no true harm had come to them.

Turning and walking past the other man, she smiled, "My name is Peri and life is life. Isn't not perfect, in fact ours is harder than most, but at least we don't have to kiss anyone's toes or pretend to be better people than we are."

As she walked by she grinned and then looked onto the house, where she would take him first. It certainly wasn't a winner. Four some what solid walls; some were burnt, which had been her fault. Six rooms on one floor, and decor form the sixties (and that was generous), but it had always held up it's end of the bargain.

Peri. Her name sounded familiar, and he was pretty sure that they had a file on her. Nothing stood out immedialtey in his memory so he fairly sure that he could handle anything that she had to offer if things took a different turn from the way they were heading now. He admired the tenacity of the River Runners, to live the way that they did and yet carry no shame. That was the way that Jax had lived after his time as a POW, free and accepting of who he really was. Things weren't neccesarily easier when someone was comfortable with who they really were, but it certainly helped him sleep at night. That was the real reason why pretending to be the peacemake of Sundance was frankly more exhausting than blasting through the center of town with a machine gun would have been. Peacemaker, just wasn't something that Jax had inside of him.

"Being true to who you are is very important, but sometimes a little pretending can go a long way."

He caught up to her side, tugging his horse behind him. He liked this girl. While he thought her confidence was fake earlier he now believed that it was real. When they reached the house Jax teathered his horse to a tree out front and followed her inside.

"I can't really see why the boss is interested in this heap." And the boss, himself, wasn't really interested in the property but in the tribal relations.

Peri shrugged, "Maybe... but I really have never seen the point. What you see is what you get. It makes life a lot easier... mine anyhow."

She grinned as they walked in the front door, "The only reason he should be interested is because we would like to keep her, and thus he has found himself with a somewhat profitable shack. Hope he barters well though, because no one else wants her." As they walked in there was a corner full of soot and with some obviously burn marks on the wall. "This is where my kiln usually goes. Over there is the kitchen... Or what's left of the kitchen. All the rest of the rooms are bare, we bring our cots from our boats usually, so there's not really a lot left in the summer."

Inside, Jax couldn't agree with her more; but in reality there were benefits to being someone else from time to time. He did it often in his work as what some would have called a "terrorist".

He smiled, "It can be easier, you're very right. When you know who you are, you accpet it and you're honest about it, you have complete freedom. You don't have to answer to anyone but yourself."

He looked around the room, walking behind Peri with his arms folded behind his back. The place was a dump, but if it was what the River Runners wanted then he would accept pretty much any deal to let them have it and see that they could trust his tribe. Yeah, he would be beyond reasonable with them. He'd be what some would even call overly generous.

"That's good, nothing of real importance to waste man power on guarding during the summer." He walked over to the burn marks and ran a finger along the wall. Some soot came off on his fingertip. "Your kiln? I think that'd be against the fire code to have one of those in here, don't you think?"

He was really enjoying her company, and was more than pleased that she was being so candid with him when she didn't even have any real idea as to who he was. She hadn't even asked his name. She was confident, and powerful in her self awareness, but in his opinion she was too careless.

Peri nodded in agreement, though she doubted this stranger was showing his true hand. Something in the way he presented himself just told her that.

"Nothing at all." She agreed with him again and then laughed, "Arrest me then, since I am risking taking out my entire tribe for one of our sources of trade."

There was no doubt that Peri was having a good time with the man's who's name she hadn't asked. She had never seen the point of asking another's name, mostly because everyone lied anyhow and really if someone wanted another to know their name, then they would tell them. Peri may have been careless, but she was also calculated and she only told other what they needed to hear.

He was pleased that the Winter Camp was more or less nothing more than a shack. If these people liked it so much and it was what they wanted, then it was certainly no skin off of Jax's back to give it to them. The most valuable thing about the area was that it was the nearest and most neutral access point that the Jackals would have to the river. If things worked out with Junk the way that Jax was hoping, then the dock at the Winter Camp could prove to be useful after all. Yet, he was still pleased that the camp would serve as such an easy way to make relations with the River Runners.

"Well, as much as I wouldn't mind seeing you in handcuffs..." He grinned, and although he was joking it was obvious that there was a hint of sincerity behind his words.

"Is this all there is to the house? Could you show me the barn?" He'd heard that they'd had trouble with it last winter and he was curious to see if things had been remedied.

"Oh would you now?" She grinned viciously, but said no more and her visage changed back into that of a sweet young woman. A look that she had mastered long ago, but at most times was quite a true one.

Starting to walk back through the front door, she continued, "That's it. That barn's not much better, but it holds everything to keep our small tribe alive while the river is frozen... It still is in need of proper repairs. It caved last winter and we put it back together again, but we haven't finished..." There had been an honest hope at one time that the Wolves might take over the territory of the Camp, so they had been waiting to see who was the victor before doing the repair job that they wanted to do to the barn.

Jax caught her devious grin and it brought a genuine smile to his face, along with a laugh. He thought about continuing that line of thought, but then thought better of it.

He followed her out of the house and to the barn. He nodded as she told him about the winter episode. Jax was no expert on buildings, but the barn looked like it was on its last legs.

"It looks like it should be condemned." He laughed again, "You people don't seem very hard to please."

He left her side to walk around the outside of the barn before going inside. He continued speaking to her though, in the assumption that she was following him. "I'll tell my superiors that this needs to be fixed, if not re-built all together. I think a new barn or storage area would be the better bet."

Peri ignored the smile and her continued on around and into the barn. "We aren't, not in this aspect anyhow... New might be better, but be careful we Runners are very wary of overly kind gestures. There is always a return price on those, whether or not it's mentioned at the time."

Her tone had carried a warning, a truthful one because although not all in her tribe would see what she did, anything that looked to good to be true usually was.

She pulled her tone back to a more blissful note "Plus we are more than capable of bringing the barn back to the level it needs to be."

This girl seemed to be much smarter than Jax was giving her credit for. She had a point about the price to pay later. The whole town of Sundance would have a price to pay in the future, once the Jackals acheived a trusted foothold. But there was still a lot of time and a lot of things to do before it all came to that, and Jax would have to wait.

"I'll emphasize a repair only then, I wouldn't want to give your tribe the wrong impression. My superiors would not be happy about that at all."

Jax nodded and wanted to say something like, you may be capable but it's not your barn, but he held his tongue. There was no reason for him to turn this so far friendly interaction into a not so friendly one.

"I'm sure you are." He paused, "is there anything else around here that I should know about?"

"Good idea." She said with a smile and a twinkle in her eye. There was a good deal of manoeuvrability is any situation and Peri did always like to slid things into positions of success or failure as she saw fit. Hinting for the Jackals not to be too generous and that it honestly was not worth much to them was not shocking things for her to be telling whomever this may be within his tribe. Certainly he even thought she was being very candid, but trust was never given it was earned and she was making sure Jed would accept the offer the Jackals set up.

No she couldn't guarantee anything, hell she couldn't even guarantee he wouldn't have jumped at a new barn, but Gyspy would have shut it down if they had offered her something like that and so Peri was covering the bases. She didn't really care who this tribe was, she just wanted to keep the other home she had come to know. Plus it was to the tribe's advantage anyhow because they knew the lay of the land better than any.

Without pause she smiled and said, "No that's about it and it's also about time I get back to work... Goodbye." Without a moments paused, she grinned and turned back toward her boat and sauntered off. As soon as she reached the dock she untied and push it away from the dock before taking a few steps back and jumping on board before the current slid it far beyond her reach.

Despite how candid he thought she was being, something told him that he hadn't quite figured her out yet. She had seemed so confident around him, and it had surprised him. Granted, she hadn't known who he was, but still.

"All right, thanks for your help Peri. It won't be forgotten." He smiled back at her and took one last glance around the barn before going out to his horse and saddling up to head back to the lodge.
