Week 13: Thursday
Who: English and Dusty
When: Thursday at sunset
Where: Boarder of Farm Territory
What: Coyote population control
Rating: Dead Coyotes and English's mouth lets say PG-13 at least

English could thing of any number of things she would rather be doing at the moment. She had set the trap though so now she was waiting. She had seen it just the other night. A pack of coyotes were getting a bit too close to home for her liking and it being her duty to keep the Farm safe set out to thin the pack a bit. She had dropped a deer earlier in the day and while she hated to let it sit there it was bait. She would clean it up later and take it back home.

English sat crouched down wend from the deer and she heard them long before she saw them. English was good with a gun, years of practice and the like had given her that and she took aim and before the pack of four could even tear into the deer she had dropped two of them and the other two where on the run. Another of them fell but the fourth was well out of range and well out of site. She knew it wouldn't be back near the farm any longer. She stood and marched the several yards further down wind to grab her horse and lit her lantern as she headed up to dress the deer and pack it up on to her horse before she cleaned up the coyotes.

Coyotes close to the farm was a bad thing. They had long ago become used to humans so didn't fear their scent and what was worse the farm had far too many small kids running around. A kid to a nonhuman fearing coyote was just as good as dinner.

After an interesting afternoon in the city, Dusty finally set back out to the farm. Hunter was probably begging the farm kids for table scraps by now. He flinched instinctively, his head ducking down, when he heard the gun shots, and fearing one of the tribe members was in danger, kicked Moo into a gallop toward the source of the sound. He slowed to an easy walk when he saw only a woman and her horse, as well as a deer and a couple of dead coyotes.

He had seen English around the farm before, but was advised to stay clear of her since she had a reputation of having a bit of a temper. And Dusty knew better than to mess with girls who wield guns.

"Want any help with that?" he offered, though he suspected she would turn him down. She seemed like the type of girl who could definitely take care of herself, but Dusty had to be polite and ask anyway.

The funny thing about English was she was the dantiest looking thing on the farm. She looked up from just finishing field dressing the deer and stood wiping her blood soaked hands on a towel dangling from her back pocket. She had seen Dusty around and he seemed like the alright sort. It was good to have more people around to help.

"You seem wary...has my reputation preceded me?" The moment she opened her mouth it came to be quite clear how she had acquired her name after the virus. She smiled up at him rather politely and let a light chuckle escape her. "If I want to get back in the fence before it gets too dark I think I will take that offer. Just don't get used to me being in a good mood."

She wiped her knife clean before raising her leg to stick it in the sheath on her calf and waited for him to help her get the deer on the back of her horse.

Dusty was taken aback for a moment. For some reason, her accent brought to mind corsets, tea, and dainty parasols; British chicks and tomboy just did not seem to go together in his mind. He blamed all the cheesy romantic comedies and Jane Austin films his sisters watched. And he certainly had not expected English to be so...amiable, especially after what the other farm hands had told him.

"Yes, ma'am," he replied in answer to her question as well as in affirmation that he understood her last statement. He quickly dismounted his horse and rested his hat on the saddle horn before assisting English with the deer. "About how bad is the cy-yote problem around here?" Dusty asked, pronouncing the animal's name like any good Texan would. He was not quite sure what a good conversation topic would be with this supposed fire-cracker of a woman, but it seemed awkward to carry on in silence.

"Not as bad as it was three bullets ago. Had a small pack getting too close to the farm for my liking. Too many little rug rats running around not to mention the horses. The coyotes around here are far too brave...too used to people." She secured the deer on the back of her horse once they had hefted it up on to its back and once that was done took hold of the reins and after a kiss to between the eyes to her horse spoke softly to her. "Alright, Caliope, head on home, love." English gave the horse's flank an affectionate pat and Caliope trotted off in the direction of home. It was a usual routine for the two of them and there would be a farm hand waiting to receive her.

"I got two of them before they started running, dropped another one about fifty yards up ahead. Figure we take these two and just drop him with the other and give the buzzards something to be happy about. They are far enough from the farm not to bother us there." She pointed up ahead to where the third coyote had dropped and for some reason it all fell in to place who Dusty was.

"Oh, you are the poor bastard that got stuck breaking up Grey and Wolf aren't you? Fucking mess that is. All over that stupid little bitch runs off in the middle of a blizzard." She rolled her eyes and picked up her rifle hanging it over her shoulder as she moved to grab one of the coyotes so she could drag it to the third.

Dusty tried to take as little offense as possible to English's language. Besides, she was known for her mouth, and he figured the British just had odd ways of expressing themselves.

He cleared his throat as he picked up the remaining coyote, following her lead. "I should have known it had something to do with a girl." He paused before asking his next question, wondering whether it would be appropriate or not. "Do they fight often? Wolf and Grey, I mean."

Grey seemed incredibly temperamental when he had first met him, and from what he had seen, Wolf seemed just as hot-headed. The rest of the tribe seemed decent enough, but Dusty was starting to wonder just where all the drifters he had met got the idea that the Wolves were a peaceful tribe. Perhaps he should talk to Ryder next chance he got to see if the Twin Feathers were any more stable. He was not the type to just up and desert once he had made an arrangement with someone, but being new to the area, Dusty did not think it wise to be mixed up in a tribal tiff that might escalate to something much more dangerous.

"It was Wolf's little sister Nova who just so happened to be Grey's ex. So it was a big brother confrontation. Grey was upset over her running off in a blizzard like an idiot then instantly shacking up with Hawk the co-leader of the Twin Feathers. I almost lost a damn toe looking for the girl and Wolf apparently had a litter about Grey letting her run off. Wolf hated the idea of them being together anyway. I am half tempted to beat the both of them over the heads so they can pull them out of their asses. Grey usually isn't so volatile...it was just Wolf being a bastard on top of Grey being hurt about how Nova treated him. It exploded."

English tossed the coyote down beside the third one when she reached it and brushed her short cropped hair from her forhead with her upper arm.

Dusty's eyebrows shot up. "So this girl is a trouble-maker?" What this Nova girl had done sounded down right dishonorable, and he was torn between thinking Wolf an incredibly decent person for sticking up for his sister or seeing him as a damn fool for seemingly supporting the girl's decisions.

"Just how long did she give herself to get over one guy before she moved on to the other?" he asked, rethinking his idea to check out the Twin Feathers. If one of their leaders were mixed up in this, then perhaps it was best he just sat tight where he was. It just would not do for him to mirror Nova's actions and ditch the tricky situation with Grey and the Wolves tribe for an even stickier situation with the Feathers.

"More of an idiot if you ask me. Very much the pampered little princess that never got over getting exactly what she wanted and throws a fit when she doesn't." It was easy to tell there wasn't any lost love from English when she spoke of Nova. "But she has caused a hell of a lot of trouble whether she meant to or not. Never even bothered to tell anyone she was alive and shacked up with the Twin Feathers and for months Grey has been moping about it all being his fault then Wolf waltzs over accuses Grey of it all like he through the twerp out into the snow and of course it comes to blows. All know I would have punched him for saying the like to me...though I have anger issues."

English stopped her rambling long enough to hear Dusty's other question and thought on it. "Not long considering she is apparently pregnant enough to notice...which is just wrong on all accounts. Gifts like that should be bestowed on the worthy not the retarted."

Dusty shook his head. "Isn't that just the way it goes? The people who would make great, responsible parents can't seem to have kids no matter what, and the ones who have no business with children seem to have ten too many."

He could not help but to think about Amy at the mention of children. They had not been in a rush to have any kids; they figured they would have plenty of time for that after they had settled into a routine for just the two of them. Perhaps it was for the best that they had waited? He may not be able to have kids of his own, but perhaps that was better than bringing another being into a screwed up world.
