Week Thirteen: Thursday
Who: Dusty and Gemini
What: Dusty's out getting to know the area, and hoping to make some allies
When: Afternoon
Where: The Wolves Territory
Rating: PG
Status: Complete!

Dusty had not been pleased with the way things had turned out the past week when he had stopped a fight between Grey and Wolf. He had mentally kicked himself when he found out that the man he had tried politely to tell off had actually been the other leader of the Wolves. And that very guy most likely never wanted to cross paths with Dusty again. So, thankful that the rain had finally let up, Dusty went out for a ride in the area that he understood to be the rest of his new tribe's territory with the intention of making new friends and allies as opposed to more, unintentional, enemies.

After getting the majority of his chores done, he saddled up Moo and packed a light lunch into one of his saddlebags. He took the main road into the city, and silently prayed he did not run into Wolf again. Dusty really had no desire to get into a potential altercation with the man, but would rather prove he was a decent fellow and would respect his wishes by staying out of his business. Though one had to admit that is was difficult to stay out of a fellow tribe member's business, especially when their businesses seem to coincide from time to time just because they happen to share the same environment.

With a mental shrug, Dusty continued on his way. If he did run into Wolf, all he could do was apologize and hope the man would have a better temper today to understand the situation Dusty had been put in at the time.

Gemini needed to get out of the house. Wednesday had been peaceful, quiet after the hustle and bustle of Twin Feathers two days before... She had met so many people and both Callum and herself had been a little overwhelmed by the sheer size and excitement of the tribes... Overall the day had been eventful and Gemini had enjoyed yesterday's respite, but it was time to get out again.

Opting for a color that matched today's sky, Gemini pulled on a pale gray racerback and coupled it with a pair of camouflage cargo pants. She bent over to lace up her black, military-style boots then tossed back her hair, letting it wave where ever it wanted to. Callum, watching her from the edge of the bed, barked out his own kind of laugh as the waves tumbled in a wild disarray around her face.

"What?" She smiled at him and went to ruffle his wiry fur. "It's just going to go crazy with this humidity, anyways. Now are you coming or not?" Gemini grabbed her bag from where she had dropped by her door and held the door for Callum as he leapt off the bed and bounded through it. They walked to the kitchen, Gemini for a bottle of water and a couple of the granola bars she had stashed in the cabinet and Callum for a long lap at his tank-sized water bowl. When he was done, Gemini held open the front door and they walked out into the grey but relatively dry afternoon.

Setting off in a random direction, Gemini sang an old Kenny Chesney song as she wandered down the road with her best pal at her side. There was a definite skip to her step. She had the beginnings of home here. Sure, there was tension between the tribes and many thought a battle was inevitable... but Gemini would do what she could to help when that day came. She had her will to fight and her skill with leather, as well as her ability to rough it with the best of them.

"I'm what I am and I'm what I'm not..."

Smiling to herself, Gemini thought of all of the people she had met yesterday. She had a lot to be thankful for. She had a roof over her head, new friends that would become even better friends, hot water and food...

"I'm sure happy with what I've got..."

Yes, she had plenty to be grateful for. This was her new beginning. She could almost forget about the troubles that her travels had given her and believe that there had been no road between Kerrville and Sundance, that she had always been this content and relatively safe.

"I live to love and laugh a lot..."

Gemini turned a corner, slowing when she heard hooves clicking against the pavement. Callum placed himself in front of her, out of habit for the most part, but the hair on his back remained smooth and flush against his skin.

"And that's all I nee-"

Abruptly, Gemini's voice died in her throat. Out of all of the people she had met, so far, none of them had been familiar faces... but the man on this horse... and even the horse itself... She knew she had seen them before... but where?

"Um... Excuse me! Do I... know you from somewhere?"

Dusty halted as well when he saw the young woman. He thought he recognized her as well, and his suspicions were confirmed when she spoke to him. He definitely hadn't forgotten the dog. Wasn't she the girl he had pretty much rescued from that group of drifters who had expected her to perform certain unsavory favors in return for the food they had given her? What was her name again? Cancer? Sagittarius? Jewel?

He peered at her from under his white cowboy hat, with a curious grin settling on his face. "Gemini...right?" He fingered the braided leather band tied to his wrist before raising his arm to show it to her. "You gave me this?"

He slid down off of Moo and walked closer to the girl, keeping the reigns in his hand just in case the crazy animal had a mind to run off. "If I had known we were going the same direction, I would have been more adamant about traveling with you. I'm glad to see you've made is unscathed, though," he confessed with a warm smile that twinkled in his eyes as he removed his hat. It just was not right for such a young girl to travel alone, especially in times like these and in a world such as theirs.

How could she forget that cowboy charm and that smooth southern drawl?Gemini's smile spread from ear to ear when she saw the bracelet on his wrist. She'd given him that the day he had saved her from a particularly rough group of drifters, drifters that expected favors for food...

"Dusty Rhodes?!" She couldn't help herself. She almost knocked Callum to the ground as she stood on her tiptoes to throw her arms around the man. She was almost shouting with joy, probably hurting his ear so close to her lips, but she couldn't help herself.

"My goodness! I would have loved the company, trust me, but I'm so glad we've met again! I was actually just thinking how grateful I was to finally have a place to settle but that I would love to see a truly familiar face!" She drew back a little, her arms still around him, unaware that he might not want her hugging him, and smiled up into those twinkling eyes.

"You look great, Dusty! It really is great to see you! But... how did you end up here?"

A soft, "Oof!" escaped his mouth as the girl tackled him with a hug. This had certainly been the last thing Dusty had expected from her, especially since she had seemed so very against male company when he first met her. Nevertheless, Dusty was not one to turn down hugs, so he put his spare arm around her petite shoulders and gave a squeeze.

"Well, I was headin' up north for the summer. Moo, here, wasn't too keen on spendin' another summer in Jackson County. But I ended up here, in particular, 'cause I heard the tribes around here were more civil than most. I'm workin' over at the farm," he answered, and then fixed her with a quizzical look.

"How did you end up here?"

Gemini blushed slightly at the sense of comfort that surrounded her with his arm and her cheeks burned even more when he asked his question.

"Well... When you... rescued me, I was on a bit of a quest. When my parents died I found my father's journal... and discovered the family he had left to be with my mother... turns out I have one surviving half-sister." She smiled as she thought of Libby.

"I just got here on Saturday... and it's been a very eventful week... but Libby is great. She's welcomed me with relatively open arms, all things considered. We had a bit of a rough start but after a significant amount of yelling on my part and a very cool head on her part, we've settled into a pretty comfortable relationship, for now."

Gemini looked up at those sprkling blue eyes again. Honestly how could she ever forgotten about Dusty? He was quite literally her hero... She remembered praying for his safety for monthes after they had gone there seperate ways... when had she stopped doing that? But now, seeing his face again, she realized how much she missed his company. She smiled up at him.

"Do you want to come back to the house? We have one heck of a lot to catch up on."

"Well, good!" he replied when she had finished talking about her half-sister, patting her on the back before stepping away to give her space. He wasn't quite sure what had made her blush, but Dusty sisters had taught him well enough to back off when a woman got uncomfortable.

A shadow of sadness passed briefly over his face. It seemed so rare these days for people to actually find lost loved ones, if any had survived the virus. Gemini talking about her half-sister brought memories of his sisters Bitsie and Becky...and his wife Amy. All had been lost to him.

Her suggestion of coming back to the house vanquished the shadow, though hesitation now dominated his features. "Oh, I don't know 'bout that," he answered, running his hand nervously over his short brown hair. "There's this feller, Wolf, who didn't seem to keen on seeing me again. And I know I'm askin' for it, just bein' in his territory like this, but I had to get to know the area and my fellow tribe members somehow."

"You got into a confrontation with Wolf?"

Gemini's eyes widened. The only side she had ever seen of either of the men was a good side. She didn't want to think of how they would look at each others' throats... But she did want some time to talk to Dusty. She wanted to know more about him. About his travels and whatever had caused that look of despair to cross his features when she had mentioned finding her family... Maybe they could go someplace else. Find some place to talk like she had done with Shadow on Monday. Then again, Dusty was going to have to talk to Wolf sometime... Perhaps Gemini could act as a buffer if Wolf was indeed at the house.

"Well surely the whole thing was a misunderstanding... I really don't know him that well but he treats Libby right. I'm sure he'd give you a chance to explain. He's very... intense... a little intimidating to me, quite honestly, but he seems fairly just. He just wants the best for his tribe, I think... Still, if you'd rather go somewhere else, I don't mind. Really the only reason I'm out is because I can't stand being idle for so long. But I don't really have a job here yet so there's not much for me to do..."

Dusty motioned behind Gemini to where a Starbucks used to be. "Let's go sit over there," he suggested, noticing a bench that had been bolted to the pavement just outside the establishment.

"And it's not that I got into a confrontation with him, just stuck my nose where it didn't belong," he clarified, picking his words carefully. Other tribe members had heard the altercation between Wolf and Grey, and everyone seemed to be gossiping over what they thought had gone on, but Dusty wouldn't be one of the people who fueled the rumor mill. It was dangerous territory when two leaders had obvious issues with each other, and he wasn't about to further upset the delicate balance by blabbing about what had happened. That was actually why he had broken up the fight; the two men might have secluded themselves in the barn, but people could still hear. He was the only one with enough gall to go in and get them to simmer down.

"I'm sure he is a decent guy," Dusty went on. He had remembered the conflict involving Wolf's sister. Dusty, of all people, could certainly understand getting into a fist fight over the female members of the family. "He just needs to be more mindful of his surroundings. People talk, you know. I haven't been here long, but I'd hate to see this place go to hell just because of a misunderstandin'."

His eyes suddenly shot to the ground and his hand flew up to cover his mouth. "Pardon my language," he quickly amended. It had been quite some time since he had female company; his tongue and manners had grown lax in that time.

Gemini let out a chuckle and gently removed Dusty's hand from his mouth with her own. She had forgotten just how much of a southern gentleman he truly was.

"Dusty, you're language is fine. I know you don't normally curse, but considering the way the world is at present, I figure it's ok to slip up every once in a while." Smiling gently, she patted her thigh, telling Callum to follow as she led Dusty toward the bench.

"So the reason you and Wolf are at odds is that you were trying to keep the rumors and stories caused by Grey and Wolf's fight to a minimum... that seems like something you would do." She smiled at him. He was a knight in shining armor, that's it. He had been trying to keep peace within the tribe. And he most definitely had a point. This place was out of the ordinary in the best possible way but it was a precarious situation. It really did need all the help it could get.

"But, honestly, have you explained that to Wolf? You're reason for interfering was good. But I think Wolf is having a bit of trouble with a lot right now. Every time I've seen him, he's always seemed to have a lot on his mind... I'm sure things will work out..." Gemini let go of his hand as they neared the bench, remembering the awkward pat on the back he had given her. It was quite possible that he had a girlfriend... she probably should refrain from touching him... She sat down on the bench and let Callum rest his massive head in her lap, stroking his head idly as she watched Dusty. He looked good. A little... better fed? Or maybe just happier, more comfortable than when she had last seen him. Of course, the last time she had seen him had been under much more uncomfortable circumstances...

"So, the last time I met you, we didn't really talk." She smiled at him and patted the bench beside her. "Tell me about Dusty Rhodes. About his past and his present and what he wants to do with his future."

"I hope he gets whatever it is worked out soon," he added, before joining her on the bench, and looped Moo's reigns around the metal fence dividing the shop's patio from the rest of the street.

It was his turn to blush a bit when Gemini asked him such direct questions. He never really cared to have the spot light shined on him. "Well," he started awkwardly, his hand returning to run across his head again. "I grew up on a ranch in Jackson County with my mom, dad, and two older sisters, Bitsie and Becky. The girls went off to college, and I stayed at home to keep the ranch running. I ended up getting married to one of Becky's college friends. And then the virus came through..."

He wasn't quite sure why he was telling her all this. He studied her briefly, eyebrow arched in curiosity. It was that dazzling grin; somehow she just managed to pull information out of him. "But we all know how that turned out," he quickly added, eager to change the subject. "So now I'm here, and I'm hoping to stick around for a while. At least until winter. I might decide to head back south for that. Though I don't know if the rest of my gang will be able to make that trip again."

Dusty didn't think it seemed quite fair, talking about himself, so he asked, "And what about Miss Gemini?"

Gemini couldn't help tearing up when he mentioned losing his family... his wife. She new that that sort of loss had struck everyone left alive today... herself included... but she almost couldn't bear the idea of Dusty having to bury his wife... That must have been devastating. No wonder he had seemed sad when she had mentioned finding her family... He didn't have any family left to find...

Wiping swiftly at her tears before they could spill over, Gemini gazed off into the distance as she tried to get her smile back. "Honestly the more interesting story happened before my parents were married... but i figure that's Libby's tory to tell if she wants it told... After the wedding it was just my mother and father and Callum and I in the hills outside of Kerrville for the longest time. My parents hardly ever left our property so I heard and saw the virus before they did. I buried them when it finally reached them... and then I found my father's journal and moved on..." She regained her composure enough to look back at Dusty, her smile weak but present.

"It took me a few years to track her down... a few rough and tumble years... but i got through it, thanks to the skills that my parents drilled into me. You're looking at a genuine nature girl... capable of roughing it with the best of them... and i actually like roughing it for the most part, but I've become kind of wary of large, rough tribesmen..."

Dusty chuckled nervously. This conversation just got better and better. "Sorry to be such a downer," he apologized when he saw her tears. "But at least I know now why you were so eager to get away from me. I thought maybe it was because I hadn't showered in a while," he added, hoping to brighten her mood back up.

Just because the current situation was utterly depressing did not mean everyone had to give into the feeling. It had taken Dusty a while, but he had finally learned that it is possible to move on and be happy and still honor the memory of deceased loved ones, though he wasn't sure he would ever be fully over losing Amy.

Gemini let out her low, throaty laugh, touched that Dusty was trying to cheer her up when he had every right to be the one crying.

"Oh, please! I hadn't bathed in as long if not longer!" She was cut off as a gust of wind blew half of her wild, wavy hair into her face. She roughly pushed it back and bent down to untie her leather braid from her ankle.

"Speaking of bathing... Jeez... now that I'm regularly washing my hair, I can't seem to keep it from going crazy... it seems that being clean makes it even wavier than I remember." She chuckled and quickly and efficiently braided the tie into the soft, wavy mass. As she pulled it off her shoulders she caught sight of the butterfly on her right shoulder, dark and significant against her pale skin. She sighed and muttered very quietly, under her breath.

"Leave it to me get so caught up with everything around me that I forget that I have a tattoo..."

"Tattoo?!" Dusty shivered. "Please tell me you got that at a sanitary establishment before the virus hit."

He did not care for the thought of needles. Even after all of his farm-related injuries, the evil things still gave him chills. Besides death, of any sort - even the calm, quiet kind - needles were Dusty's number one fear.

Gemini's laugh was a little louder this time.

"You want the truth? It wasn't in an actually facility but it was sanitary. My mother did it the year before she died... On the last day of my coming-of-age ceremony. It's Scottish tradition... My mother tattooed my butterfly... her mother did her swallow... and her grandmother did her mother's dragonfly..." Gemini turned so he could see the tiny, intricate butterfly. "I haven't really even thought about that ceremony in ages... It's one of my last, happy, pre-virus memories... the look of pride on my mother's face when I didn't cry during the tattooing..." Gemini smiled at Dusty, who had turned a very scary shade of white at the mention of tattoos.

"Look. It's not so bad." She smiled and took his hand, tracing one of his fingers over the pattern. "See? It's tiny. And it's a lasting symbol of my family and my heritage... one of the last things i have left of them..."

He chuckled through his apparent discomfort. "Ages? You mean a few years?" he asked incredulously. "How old are you, anyway?" She had such young, youthful features; Dusty would have placed her to be roughly sixteen.

He let her take his hand, but still cringed inwardly. "I'm glad it didn't bother you none, but the thought of needles still gives me the heebie-jeebies," he said and drew his hand away to loop his thumb through a belt loop on his jeans.

"So you're good at working with leather?" He realized the question was rather rhetorical as the proof of her talent was wrapped around his wrist, but it seemed like a nice segue into another topic. "You know, I think I know a guy who could probably use a talent like yours. His name is Ryder; I met him on my way into town. He seems like he has trouble, from time to time, keeping up with his horses. Perhaps you could make him a few decent lead ropes, maybe some reigns and bridals as well?"

Gemini straightened into a more comfortable position when Dusty dropped his hand.

"Sorry, didn't mean to make you uncomfortable." She gave him a sheepish smile. "Just wanted to show that it's really not such a remarkable thing, getting a tattoo. And I'll be nineteen on June, 4th. Not that I've actually stopped and celebrated my birthday over the past few years..."

Her gaze went off somewhere over Dusty's shoulder as she thought about it, "Come to think of it... that coming of age ceremony was really the last celebration I had... interesting..."

Shrugging, Gemini turned back towards Dusty with another smile on her face. People kept giving her the same suggestions about her work.

"Yeah I'm pretty good with leather. My mother was an artist. I pretty much learned by osmosis... You're not the first person to mention working with horses or with Ryder. When Libby and I visited the Twin Feathers on Tuesday, we were hoping to run into him, but they were having a little trouble tracking him down... I left a letter with Marmie though. Hopefully he'll get back to me soon. Like I said, I can't stand having nothing to do. But if I'm going to be making bridals and lead ropes and saddles and things of that sort, I'll need a number of horses, measurements, and I've yet to find a suitable source of materials... You need good, strong leather for anything used with horses... so the stuff I found in the junkyard the other day won't do... I'll probable have to start from scratch with hides, but I don't really know how to go about getting those... Of course I could just do an extra curing of any leather that I find... but even then the finished product wouldn't be as comfortable for horse or rider and it wouldn't last as long, especially the saddles..."

Gemini trailed off into silence, consumed by everything she would have to do to get a successful leather-smith up off the ground... she'd need a building with a furnace and wood for curing frames and a work bench and the correct solutions and washes, most of which she could make from scratch but still... She had a lot ahead of her.

"Oi... I have a lot to get done," she grumbled. Then she sighed and leaned back, supporting her weight with her arms. "Still, I can't do much until I know that Ryder even wants my help, so I'm kinda stuck... I wonder if he'd be willing to pay me with a horse... I mean when I'm done with everything. It's a rather large asking price... but I haven't been on a horse, feeling that free and that wonderful in ages. There's absolutely nothing like it."

"Oh, it wasn't you, exactly, that made me uncomfortable. It's just needles," he reiterated, scrunching his nose up at the mention of the horrible things.

Dusty then resumed listening in quiet amusement as Gemini listed out all the things she needed. He thought he remembered the farm having plenty of cowhides, leftovers from the unfortunate cattle who had not made it through the winter, but since they were not his materials to give away, he kept the idea to himself. He added trying to talk to Grey about leather supplies to his to-do list.

The corner of his mouth twitched upward in a knowing smirk when she mentioned horseback riding. Turning his attention to his horse, which was leisurely munching away at the weeds growing up between the pavement blocks, he said, "You know...I don't think Moo, here, would mind too much if you took him for a little ride." He raised his hand to the side of this mouth in a mock attempt to keep his voice from reaching the horse's ears and whispered, "He's a bit of an attention whore."

Moo just carried on with his chewing, while his tail flicked at flies. The truth did not bother him none.

Gemini shot up in her seat, an incredulous look on her face. Hopefully Dusty didn't think that she had been asking to ride his horse! She hadn't even thought of that- she had merely been voicing a longing!

"Oh... my.. goodness... Are you serious?!"

Before he could change his mind, Gemini was pulling a granola bar from her bag and offering half to the horse. She laughed lightly when his soft lips took it from her hand and then stroked his neck to get him used to her.

"I promise you can have the other half when we're done."

She went to adjust the stirrups, still murmuring to the horse and calling ecstatic thank-yous over her shoulder at Dusty. There was no way her feet would reach them when they were adjusted to Dusty's height. As soon as she was done, she untied the reigns from where they were bound and stuck her foot in the stirrup. A rush of joy filled her as she hoisted herself up and into the saddle. Moo's head and ears perked up, his hooves clicking slightly as he sensed Gemini's anticipation. So when she tugged on the reigns, turning him away from the Starbucks and Dusty sitting on the bench, he willingly wheeled around, ready for the ride. Looking over her shoulder with a gleeful smile on her face, Gemini met Dusty's bright blue eyes.

"You have no idea what this means to me. Thank you, so much. Callum," she turned her gaze to her dog, who gazed back with a knowing dog-smile on his face. "Keep Dusty company would you? I'll be back in a flash!"

With that, Gemini nudged Moo into motion. He reared and Gemini took one hand off the reigns to tear her braid from her hair. She wanted to remember every sensation, including the wind rushing through her waves. As his hooves touched the ground again, Gemini let out a joyous peel of laughter and leaned forward as he shot off in a gallop. She could feel every muscle as it flexed with his movements, could hear every beat of his hooves against the ground, and could taste every breath of air that she drew into her lungs. She moved as one with the horse, reveling in the speed and the freedom, loving every sense that came alive. She let him go pretty much where he wanted to, turning on to random streets and down alley ways until, finally, with a gasp and another joyous laugh, Gemini pulled Moo to a halt. He was enjoying this as much as she was, prancing energetically in place as they both tried to catch their breath.

Reluctantly, Gemini turned him around, making him walk for a minute so he didn't tire out on her. She didn't want to leave Dusty just sitting there for too long. She was sure he had things to do and places to be. A gentle squeeze of her knees was all the encouragement that Moo needed to shoot forward again. They raced through the streets, swerving to avoid the occasional bystander and following her path back to the Starbucks.

"Whoah, Moo." The horse skidded to a stop in front of the abandoned coffee shop. Dusty and Callum were right where they had left them. Sure that her hair and her cheeks were alive with proof of the wind, Gemini tried to take a few deep breaths and regain her composure as she agilely slid out of the saddle. She retied the horse and took the remaining half of the granola bar and her bottle of water from her bag. She let him swallow the treat before filling her hand with water and letting him drink, repeating the process until he had drank his fill. When all of this was done, she turned and beamed at Dusty before plopping down on the bench next to him.

A heavy sigh gusted from her lungs. "Thank you. That was amazing."

Dusty chuckled when Gemini rejoined him. "Anytime," he replied. "I'm sure Moo appreciated the exercise." He picked up his hat up from its resting spot on the bench beside him and stood to face Gemini. "I'd hate to cut our visit so short, but I've got a dog back at the farm who's probably beggin' for some dinner right about now," he said, placing the hat back on his head and walking over to Moo.

"It's been nice to get to talk to you again. Maybe I'll see you at the St. Patty's Day party this Saturday?" The horse nudged his arm, eager for more goodies, but Dusty just patted his nose as he untied the reigns.

"Wow, is it St. Patrick's Day already?" She sat idely, petting Callum's head, which had immediately taken it's place on her lap as soon as she sat down on the bench. She had been so out of it lately...

Shaking herself, Gemini pulled her bag back onto her shoulder as she watched Dusty prepare to leave. She smiled up at the easy cammeraderie between horse and man.

"Of course, I'll see you there." Vaguely recalling the dog that had snapped at her offenders when Dusty had come to her rescue. "And say hi to... Hunter for me."

Standing, Gemini looked for a general direction to walk in. Wondering where she should wander today.

"Hey, Dusty? Where's a good place to explore? I need to kinda figure out the city..."

Dusty tipped his hat at her. "I sure will," he replied with a wink and hauled himself up into the saddle. "Maybe I'll let him come to the party with me so you can see him again too."

He squinted as he looked around the area, also contemplating places for her to go. "You know, I can't say for sure. I'm still pretty new here too. But wherever you choose to go, don't go too far north. I've been told that's Mountain Lion territory. Pretty nasty folk from what I've heard."

Gemini grimaced and glanced in a northerly direction.

"Yeah, Shadow told me a bit..."

She looked back up at Dusty and gave him a slight smile.

"Be safe, Dusty. Avoid Mountain LIons... but be wary of Wolves too."

She turned and began walking towards the south with Callum closely at her side.

He nodded and replied, "You too, darlin'," and nudged Moo into an easy canter back to the farm.
