Week Twelve - Tuesday, Early Morning
Who: Peri and Shepard
When: Early Tuesday Morning ((Before the Meeting))
Where: Peri's boat
What: Peri decides to get rid of Shepard with interesting results
Rating: PG-13 (language)

Everything was changing; Peri was in the middle of it and trying to get back to what she knew. Since Saturday her world had been turned upside down. Gypsy was gone and Shepard was here in bed with her. She felt like nothing made sense anymore. Yes, he had saved her life, but she couldn't figure out for the life of her why she had let him stay so long. It was four days now, three more than anyone had managed in a row. And then there was Gypsy... her best friend... really her only true friend. The one that saw what she was and took her for it, the one that never judged her and only tried to help her. She was gone. Peri had spent the last day searching for her, truly to find something of her, something that would explain to Peri what had happened, but there was nothing.

She had lied in bed awake all night, trying to think of where the other might be and what might have happened and why there was a man just sleeping next to her. Everything was blurry and uncoordinated. By morning though she had decided that she needed to get rid of Shepard so that she could focus on Gypsy. It was as simple as that in her mind and there wasn't anything that she could think of to dissuade her.

She had gotten up early and had packed the few things she had into sacks, leaving out a pair of clothes considering as was tradition in Peri's bed, he was lacking in them at the moment. After she had everything ready she stood over the bed and with a nudge with her foot she said, "Okay Shepard, you have to get going. I have places to go and people to see... and you are slowing me down." It was a well rehearsed line.

Shepherd was not a man that went into things lightly. He had been expecting to be kicked out after the first day but he hadn't. When he woke on the fourth after Peri's horribly restless night he knew it was well on the way. He had covertly watched her pack the spare clothes from countless others he assumed that had been in similar situations with Peri, or so he assumed. For all he knew they could have belonged to the once owner of the boat. He caught her nudging foot as he sat up. He tried not to throw her off balance but he wasn't letting go of her foot.

"How am I slowing you down? And you have trusted me alone in your boat before so it obviously isn't a lack of trust that has you kicking me out. If you need me to help I can easily do that. I have quite a few skills most people these days don't." He wasn't going to make this easy on her. There was something there between them or he wouldn't have been allowed to stay so long. He kept telling himself that atleast, he wanted to believe it and he was going to try and make Peri believe it.

A look of stern shock crossed her face as he grabbed her foot, but she was having none of his game. "So you're awake then. Well all the better." The look on her face was if anything nice snarky, but it could definitely could have been called worse. She had no intention of letting him stay and she was willing to do whatever it took to get rid of him and the sooner the better in her opinion.

"I don't need anything from you." She didn't like to be told others could help her, she prided herself on her independence. Even if she really could have used the help at times, there was no way she would ever admit that. She was drowning when he met her and to be truthful she wouldn't have asked for help had she been conscious. A dumb move to be sure, but one she would have taken.

"Let's be frank, there are plenty of people in my tribe that can do things for me when I need them done. There is also a long line of men wanting to fill my bed and don't disillusion yourself with who I might be, there have been plenty to fill it. I don't like company and I don't need nor want you here, so just make it easy on yourself and walk away. It will be easier that way."

"You want to be frank, very well then I never doubted there was a line, Peri. And you aren't getting rid of me that easily. Because while you don't like company, I do. And while I might have meant nothing to you, you meant something to me, four days or not. So, I don't particularly want to move along from one of the few people I have actually ever connected with." He looked up at her with those bright blue eyes as sincere as he could be. This was going to be a knock down drag out fight and he knew it. Things worth having were worth fighting for, or so he had always heard.

"I'm not backing down nor giving up easily. Had you told me this after the first day I was here I might have believed it but not after what we have had these past few days." Peri may have fooled many people before but Shep knew her motives. She didn't want to get close; he understood that, he felt much the same way. Peri was special though, something had clicked between them and while he could be very wrong this felt like she was running before she got in too deep. He wasn’t going to let her run from it though.

Her green eyes looked down on him with disdain, who did he think he was decided when or if he would leave. No he would leave and she would make sure that he would never want to come back. She may have felt a connection to him, but that just meant that he had to go now. She wasn't about to let him get the best of her yet though, and so she smiled. It wasn't a happy smile though, more of a 'fuck you' smile. "You are right I don't like company, and I don't want it so thus you must go."

It seemed simple enough, looking down at her foot she knew with both of his hands grasping it that she wouldn't get it loose, so instead she decided to try another way. "Oh you'll give up." Stepping down into his hands she put all her body weight into that foot and prepared to fall. She was a rough and tumble girl, and worse things had happened.

There was the sound of cracking knuckles and then there was the sound of fracturing bones. There was a sick sounding combination of both that came from Shepherd's hands when Peri put her weight on the hands gently but firmly keeping her foot captive. A very strained look crossed his face and to his credit he didn't sling her half way across the boat in pain. The only sign other than the sound anything was wrong was him sucking in his bottom lip a moment biting down roughly on it.

"I am starting to get the inclination you really might not give a damn." He looked up at her and let go of her foot but didn't move his hands from beneath it. "If you would please step off of my hands. I guess you could give me a send off present of helping me splint the broken ones."

It might have been an unexpected reaction for someone of Peri's nature, but at the sound of fingers breaking... more specifically Shepard's fingers breaking she winced. She didn't like being held or being told what to do, but the truth was that she didn't like physical violence either. She hadn't meant to actually hurt him, quite the opposite. What she had been hoping to do was to get him to let go in fear of her putting her whole weight on. Unfortunately he hadn't let go before she had.

In times like these, bones just broke. It wasn't that people played any rougher... well they did... but falling broke bones. Where a person would have just had a scrapped knee, they instead broke their femur. It wasn't pretty, but it was mainly due to the fact that people just didn't eat the way they needed to in order to keep their bones strong. Milk was a rarity, and where you could find it, many couldn't pay for it.

In a moment though she had pick her weigh back up, though she didn't move her foot, mostly knowing it would only cause him more pain. Yes, that was a twinkle of caring from the uncaring. Her words didn't reflect it though as the only one that left her mouth was, "Fine" in a monotone voice.

Shepherd being the doctor he was knew what she was doing when she didn't lift her foot completely off of his hands. It was an appreciated gesture but he would have to look at his fingers and splint them properly if he ever wanted to use them again. This thumb trailed softly over the top of her foot as he looked up at her. "I need to look at them, Peri." The tone of his voice was slightly strained because breaking anything hurt.

He figured she hadn't meant to break him before tossing him out but he really couldn't be all that sure. He prepared himself for the pain that was going to come when she completely lifted her foot. He really did hope all the breaks were on one hand. If they were seperated out he was pretty much screwed.

Peri slowly removed her foot from his hands, trying not to bump wither of them. It was awkward and horrible and she at that moment would have done anything to take it back. A thought that had never crossed her mind about her actions for a very long time. There wasn't normally anything really to apologize for, at least not in her mind. She didn't care who's feelings she hurt or who she turned her back on, because for a very long time it had been only about her and who she was.

As soon as her foot was out of his hands she knelt down beside him, her hair sliding over her features. Anyone looking at her face at that moment would have seen the concern, but she didn't look at him. And to be honest she couldn't. It was easy to bravado your way out of a situation, but this wasn't what she had been trying to do.

A voice came from between her locks though her eyes were still fixed on his hands, "What's broken?" It lacked the air it usually carried, and there was no mistaking that.

The pain that pulsed through his hands was enough to make his fance scrunch up and him to suck in a breath but that was all that came from him. He moved his hands once by one up to be inspected. Lucky for Shepherd he had not broken anything on his left hand, the one which happened to be his dominant. The downside was he had probably two broken fingers on his right hand, the middle and his index. His index finger was bent at an odd angle and Shep took a deep breath and took a hold of it and with a sickening sound popped the bone back in place. He let out quite a vehement curse from his lips as his head flopped back to whack the wall behind him.

Once he could see straight again and he had himself under control he inspected his finger poking at them and the like. "These two are they need to be taped together with something to keep them straight between them. Wouldn't happen to have a popsicle stick would you?" It was a dumb question but it would have worked wonders about now.

Peri's eyes had looked over Shepard hands as she had spoken and his index certainly was not what anyone would term as straight. She was also well aware that it had been before; she knew his hands. A shiver ran down her spine as he pulled his finger to bring it back to it's original setting. It wasn't pretty, but it was effective and immediately it was much straighter than it had been.

With the time elapsed and the relief of pressure though, the fingers Shepard had suggested were broken were reddening.

An eyebrow rose at his quest of a Popsicle stick, and at any other moment she might have let some sort of a rude comment slip her lips, but she didn't. Instead she stood up and walked over to her work station, where she drew and made pigments for her wares. Picking up a metal spike she had, and an old shirt of hers, she walked back over to him. Kneeling down she put both into his lap, but said nothing. She didn't know what to say.

Shepherd knew he was going to have a bad day...or it sure was making out to be one so far. He picked up the shirt and brought it up to his mouth and began ripping stripps from it with his teeth. So far so good on the one handed chore of splinting his own fingers. It wasn't going to be so easy tying the fabric though nor was it when he had to keep his fingers stright and position the split so his fingers couldn't bend.

"I'm probably not going to be able to do this with out your help. I could but it would be half assed and would end up making it worse than better. So if you could position it between my fingers and wrap a strip around between each knuckle...it would be greatly appreciated." A great many things could be said about a guy that hadn't screamed or yelled at a woman that broke his fingers. Shepherd wasn't exactly a push over, he could be but when the need arose he could be a hard bastard. The thing that made him not lash out at Peri was her reaction now, she couldn't even look him in the face.

It wasn't exactly what Peri wanted to do, mending broken bones, especially his broken bones was not exactly on her list of the top five things that she wanted to do. Yet never the less she lightly grasped the palm of his hand with one hand as she picked up the torn pieces of her shirt. Slipping them through his fingers she wrapped them once around each and then reached for the splint. Obviously this wasn't her first time mending broken bones.

The truth was though that she had never been taught how, instead she had just rigged together what she could and knew what had worked and what hadn't. Most of her experience had been when she was younger and with her barns working with young horses. Her father and mother had many incidents concerning hooves and hands in their day.

Coughing lightly she cleared her throat and her visage as she looked up and asked, "Now what?" Her face was calm... probably too calm to be sure, but her eyes housed the emotion in her, and she wasn't doing the best job as pressing the emotions back in her eyes at the moment.

Shep didn't exactly want Peri to mending bones, he would be perfectly good with not having broken bones for her to mend. Shit happened though and his bones were broken. He watched her wrap the fabric around his fingers and nodded. "It needs to be a bit tighter not too much but I fidget alot so they need to be wrapped tighter than normal. You have good technique."

Shep figured it was the artist part of her. Artists always had stable hands and knew how to manuever and use them better than a good number of people. He had always admired that about artists. He had skilled hands but they were precise and almost mechanized with their movements. Artists just seemed intuitive and fluid.

Her eyes couldn't lie to him and he was rather glad of that fact. Peri was one hell of an actress and he was a gullable fool most days. He wasn't ready for her to be done with him yet though and while he paid the price he would see if it was worth it. HE leaned down and kissed the top of her head "Secure it a bit tighter and clip the ends so I don't look like I have streamers."

Although the thought of streamers might have been exciting to Peri at some point of her life, her mind was no were near them when he mentioned them after kissing the top of her head. At least he wasn't completely mad at her, she likely couldn't had bared it, likely though she wouldn't have a problem getting rid of him had he been hostile though.

The kiss had warmed her some, but as she looked back up there was likely a look of 'what the...' on her face, but as quickly as it touched her face the realization of what he was alluding to came to her. A smiles crossed her lips as she looked back down and tightened the wrapping and secured it.

"Technique is a questionable word, but I know how to wrap fingers. Being raised in and out of barns will do that for you." She said matter of fact-ly, likely the first thing about her other than the obvious that she had told him.
