Week Eight: Sunday
Who: Blaze, Hazard & OPEN to Carrion!
Where: the Hospital
When: late afternoon
What: Party!

Hazard made sure that everything was in place before his brother arrived. For an important occasion such as Blaze's birthday, he took it upon himself to arrange a party. After all, Alex was going to be old now and more at risk. Hazard did not like the thought of losing his brother and tried to push it out of his mind as he inspected that the food he placed was free from rat nibbles. Recently more of them found their way into the hospital and Hazard spent part of the day killing as many as he could and setting up makeshift rat traps. They might not work, but at least he was doing something to help.

Preparations were more difficult than he thought and involved Hazard sneaking out of the hospital and scrounging around for anything that he could use for the party food or a birthday present. In one of the houses, he'd found a Swiss army knife hidden in a forgotten corner of a dresser and couldn't believe his good luck. He polished it the best he could and hurried into the cold to return to the Hospital. It had been so busy for the both of them that they didn't have much time to spend together, but this birthday party was going to make up for it.

He spread the word to all the Carrion to join the party if they wanted and especially hoped Mouse would arrive later. She liked both boys, didn't she? Just in case, Hazard combed his hair extra well and cleaned his face and teeth as much as he was able. The sight of him in his smart clothing which he saved for very special occasions was going to be as much of a surprise as the actual party for Blaze, he hoped. Knowing the tribe, his brother probably knew about it already. He had to think positively, though! Yes, this was going to be excellent.

Things had been tense since Carbon's arrival days ago. Nobody was arguing but with Sensei and Blaze getting caught up in the basement and then the unsual surge of rats that had been making their way slowly up the levels of the hospital, everybody knew that things had gotten a whole lot less fun. So when Carbon got wind of Hazard's party idea he found himself leaping up out of bed and scouring the hospital for a gift fit for Blaze.

The only question on his mind that morning?
What did you get the guy who rescued you?

Carbon had thought long and hard about the gift he was going to give Blaze and although it wasn't all that much, he figured that what he had scraped together could at least provide Blaze with some temporary happiness...it beat a beginners guide to maths at least...

Carbon ambled along the hospital coridoors and walked slowly but strangely pyrposefully into the room where all this madness was to be hosted. The decorations looked nice considering but to Carbon it was wonderful. Being the weird kid back in Canada meant that he didn't always get to join in the fun like the other kids, not that large groups of people were always a wise idea but basic human interaction was at it's high in this tribe for him.

"Hazard?" he asked warily looking around the room and spotting the smaller boy. A big grin extended the width of his face, "I brought a present, can I come in?" Parties were still a reasonably new thing for Carbon. He'd even made special effort to comb his hair...

Hazard sat on a chair, jiggling his leg until Carbon entered the room, when he got to his feet quickly to greet the other guy. Good, a person arrived! He liked Carbon, had no quarrel with him or anything, and actually wanted to be closer friends with him. When he was not so busy with his spy business, of course. They both had free time now and there was no excuse for him not to try. "Hi!" he said cheerfully. "Yeah, you can come in!" He could have come in without a present, anyway, but he decided not to mention that.

Now to be a proper host. "Have something to eat or whatever," he said. "I'm just waiting until more people arrive... or just my brother arrives, to get the party started. I wish we could have music but we don't have any instruments. I did find stuff we can use as triangles and drums, but that's not fun party music, you know?" The brothers hadn't been able to have a decent party in ages - not surprising considering the circumstances. It was not the time to dwell upon the past. Blaze needed a happy celebration today and that was what he was going to get.

Having another person there improved his spirits immensely and he sat on a chair again, having stood when Carbon entered. He found it important for him to keep people's morales up when was possible (though it was not part of the job description of tribe investigation officer), or just make sure how they were doing. "Are you doing okay?" he asked. "Don't have too many rat problems? I'm trying to get them with my traps, but if they're really bad in one area, I'll double my efforts." No one could say he wasn't helpful.

Hazard, Carbon, Blaze and Open to all!

Blaze loved animals as much as the next guy. He’d worked with horses, dogs and even a lazy old tiger during his time in the circus, but rats were not enjoyable. Normally they didn’t bother him but when they, as in herds of them, tried to invade his space, steal his food and otherwise make his life hell he didn’t have much patience. Blaze had spent the better part of the day in the basement, digging through the various instruments there to see if he could find anything useful to use against the rats. So far he’d found some scalpels and a pair of short scissors but leaping onto a rat and stabbing it didn’t sound very appealing.

He’d been avoiding Sensei and most of the others since the whole basement incident. Granted, only Sensei and him knew what had happened in there between them, but he it was still strange and he couldn’t help but feel like everyone knew. He’d been more than irritable with his brother lately and had spent the majority of his time in his room, alone.

He left the basement and jogged up the stairs two at a time to get to his room on the top floor. He remembered the hammer he’d had. He’d had it down in the basement with Sensei and him but he was positive that he’d brought it back up with him when they’d gotten out. There was a group of younger Carrion girls on the stairwell of the third floor and they giggled and whispered as Blaze passed them. He gave them a horribly mean look before continuing on his way. What on earth had that been about? Did everyone really know what had happened down there or was there something about him that made his suspicious of such a thing? He straightened himself up and set his jaw in an effort to look tough and manly. When he reached his room he threw himself to the task of finding the hammer.

Almost thirty minutes later he still hadn’t found the damn thing and he was beginning to lose his patience. He peered into his brother’s room and for a brief moment debated the idea of going in there and rifling through his things. He was sure his brother had the hammer, it wouldn’t have been the first time that Hazard came into his room and took something without at least telling him.

“Casp-Hazard?” He called down the hall, but there was no reply. He walked to the end of the hall. There was a big fat rat sitting on the top step. It had something in its mouth and turned to look at Blaze with a look of utter indifference. “You should be afraid you furry little shit.” He jogged towards the rat and bunted it rather harshly with his foot so that it went tumbling down the stairs with a squeal. If he’d been in a better mood he would have laughed at the pathetic thing. When it regained its footing it sped off and into one of the many holes that dotted the walls of the hospital.

The girl were still on the same stairwell. “Have any of you seen Hazard?” They grinned and one of them nodded. “He’s down stairs, we’ll take you.” Blaze was about to protest but before he could two of the little girls had him by the wrists and were leading him down the stairs, “Ok, ok, slow down for Christ’s sake!”

One of the girls opened a doorway to the old reception area and pushed Blaze inside, “What the hel-.” He stumbled into the room and was taken by complete surprise at what he saw. There were things he hadn’t seen in years on the walls and all around, decorations. He was quiet for a moment as he surveyed his surroundings. The girls filed in behind him followed by a few more tribe members. Sensei wasn’t there, at least not yet, thank god. He didn’t want to deal with the awkwardness of that. “Uh…wow.” The shadow of an embarrassed grin tugged at the corner of his mouth. He’d managed to forget all about his own damn birthday. The girls broke into a rather amusing rendition of “Happy Birthday to You” and Blaze moved to where Carbon and Hazard were standing. He put his arm around his brother’s neck and ruffled his hair, “I guess this was all your brilliant idea smart guy?” He then looked to Carbon, as he continued to hold Hazard around the neck. “Am I right Carbon, is he the one I get to beat up for this?”

Carbon carefully entered the room and set the present down on the side, he was very careful about what he said and where he stood. He didn't want Hazard to think this was his first official invite to anything with a reasonably good crowd. Some of the others around regarding Carbon with caution, the last time he'd gotten himself in with a big crowd it had ended in panic and him needing to leave before he completely freaked out. Carbon didn't remember much of that incident but he knew enough to be embarrassed and he didn't really look anyone in the eye.

"It's pretty," he spoke eyeing all the decorations. He was about to make another statement when Blaze hustled into the room, dragged actually, by two younger girls with silly grins on their faces. Blaze had his ever present, famous, scowl on until he spotted the banner and grinned as if he had genuinely forgotten his birthday had been coming up. He took Hazard in a choke hold and Carbon grinned. He nodded furiously, "He did it all," he went on with no shame, wanting to praise Hazard for his efforts and kindness, "And he even invited me!" he proclaimed proudly

Hazard grinned his thanks at the comment and then saw that the girls had successfully completed their scouting mission. He gave one of them a wink - hey, it was his brother's birthday and he wanted to be cheerful! - and was pleased to see that Blaze looked around approvingly. It really had been a surprise. Excellent, excellent. "Oof!" Big brother chokehold. He should have expected this. "Not the hair!" It was combed the way he liked for Mouse and now it was all ruined. All things considered, it hardly mattered.

"Yeah, it was me," he answered in response to his brother's question. "At least open presents before you beat me up, all right?" Maybe that was a sufficient distraction. With the slippery skill of a circus performer turned spy, he removed himself from the chokehold and smoothed down his hair. "Plus, you have girls hanging all over you. That's a good reason to enjoy yourself." Hazard needed to perform his hostly duties and went to the table to serve a plate of food to his brother first before giving something to Carbon and the little girls. They deserved to have luxury treatment because they showed up to the party, and every member of the Carrion was part of his family.

As per all parties, it was necessary to provide some anecdotes and he tried to think of the perfect one. "Remember when you turned twelve and I made you water balloons filled with pudding? Those were awesome. It was a shame Charles had to go and sit on them," he said. "And I still don't know why you didn't want to try the zipline I made on the telephone wire." He turned to Carbon with the famous, and occasional, wild glint in his eyes. "It was incredible. The one time I did fall off, I tied one end of a rope to the telephone pole and one to me so I just swung down and that was brilliant too." If it had been possible to go bungee jumping when he was old enough, he would have done it. Now that he was a family man, he only took risks for his tribe.

“Not the hair? Are you here on a date or for my birthday?” Blaze roughed Hazard up a little more as Carbon spoke. “Of course he invited you Carbon my man! It wouldn’t be a party without you!” He thumped Carbon on the back with his free hand. He was still in shock that all of this was for him, and that somehow his brother had managed to turn his thoroughly bad mood into a better one. For the moment Blaze had forgotten all about Sensei and their awkward situation, until Hazard mentioned something about girls hanging all over Blaze. His cheeks colored a little. He liked girls right? Sure he did, but then what about what had happened with Sensei in the basement closet. “I don’t even want to know what you bribed them with to get that to happen.”

He took a seat and patted the chair next to him for Carbon to sit as well. His brother went off to get something that he assumed were the aforementioned present but when it was a plate of the best and most food he’d seen in ages he was certainly satisfied. “This is great bro…” He took the plate and like most boys his age, had finished the contents before anyone could blink an eye. Then of course Hazard felt inclined to share stories, as if this really were some sort of family affair. Blaze nodded with a laugh as he moved to throw his plate into the bag-less trash can before returning to his seat. “Poor Charlie, he had that stuff all over him, looked like he’d..” and Blaze caught himself before he said something inappropriate and ripe with a curse word. He was trying to make an effort to control his mouth when he was in mixed company.

Blaze was a risk taker but he was very calculating in the risks that he took. He remembered how amused his brother had been at his reluctance to try the zip line. When it came to fire or otherwise dangerous things Blaze was almost always a taker. The zip line was a risk he decided not to take, not trusting something his younger brother had decided to rig up out of the blue. “So how about these presents eh?” It wasn’t that Blaze wanted anything that the others could have realistically provided but he was curious to see what they had come up with. “Hazard, let’s hope it’s my hammer you’re returning.” He gave his brother a mock-threatening look.
