Week Six: Tuesday
Who: Libby and anybody/everybody!
What: Library Winter Slumber Party
When: Early Tuesday Evening
Where: Sundance Library

The shelves looked nice enough to the untrained eye; everything had been righted and the books put back up somewhat close to where they belonged. with her arrival Saturday, Libby really did not have all that much time to set her beloveds in their proper order, but the fact that they were off the floor gave her some comfort. With that task out of the way, she had spent the day shoving desks and chairs against the walls to make enough room on the upper floor for everyone to congregate, or at least enough room for the attendees to establish little territories to keep some stability. To say Libby felt nervous would have been a great understatement. She was eager to bring all the tribes together, but knew such a thing would not happen easily. Who could guess what would happen that evening, or if anybody besides her own tribe would show up.

Though she had requested that everyone bring their own provisions and sleeping materials, Libby had gathered what extra blankets, pillows, and food she could get. With winter already upon them (and it wasn't looking too bright either), they had to be careful not to be too lenient with their rationing. Then again, how could she expect the other tribes to trust the Wolves if they were stingy with their own supplies? For their little world to remain safe, everyone would need to cooperate. It would only take one weak link to destroy everything they had built.

Rolling up the sleeves of her cream turtleneck sweater, she made a simple sign on a white piece of paper, which read, "All are welcome!" and stuck it to the glass of the front door to the library. Then, with an old shawl wrapped around her shoulders, Libby paced the rows of bookshelves, reorganizing the books into their proper order, and waited for her guests to arrive. "If tempers raged and a fight broke out, at least the activity would keep everybody warm should the heating fail," her queer sense of humor pointed out. That was a main point, after all: work together, keep warm.

Slick had her marching orders. Not that she wasn't overly curious as to what was going down at the Sundance Library. But then Azrael had nudged her even more in that direction, telling her to find out what she could, and try not to piss anyone off. That sounded easy enough, especially if the Wolves were practicing what they were preaching. Tribal peace my have been something of a joke, but the meeting was a nifty opportunity to get a few new tabs on just about everyone. Or it did if any of the other tribes took up in the invitation. If they didn't, well, she'd be somewhat out of place, now wouldn't she?

She stopped in front of the library door. So far, so good. Nobody had accosted her for slipping one of her toesies over the border. Puffing out a final stream of smoke, she squinted through the glass. All were welcome? That was handy. Slick liked to think that she fell into the catagory of 'all'. With a flick, she sent the butt of her cigarette sailing over the step rail. While she didn't exactly square her shoulders, she did straighten up a bit. There was a teeny chance that someone on the other side of the door was prepared to kosh her over the head with a blunt object, then hold her for Moutain Lion ransom. Being the optomistic human being that she was...she was still keeping her fingers crossed.

Tossing back the hood of her coat, she pulled open the door. There she was, deep in the heart of enemy territory. Stealth was a key factor here. Had this been a bad action movie, she would have tried to lay low, slinking around corners and holding glasses to doors. Slick, unfortunately, had never been a big fan of crappy movies. Propping her hands on her hips, she looked to the left. She looked to the right. Satisfied that no one was about to smack her with anything, she layered on the brightest smile that she could muster. "Why, I do declare! This place isn't as bad as I thought it would be."

There had been a time when one could have entered the library, and no one but the circulation staff sitting at their desk near the front door would have noticed. But in these days, with the library as silent as death, the normally faint sound of a door opening echoed off of everything. And then, of course, there was the tell-tale sign of someone exclaiming, "I do declare!" that hinted at the presence of another human being. Abandoning her books, Libby jogged downstairs to greet her first guest of the evening.

She was met with the sight of a rather energetic personality, complete with a beaming grin and an "I am all that and a bag of potato chips" stance. Positivity and enthusiasm was always a good sign, right? "Hi, I'm Libby," she said with a warm yet slightly embarrassed smile as her feet touched the bottom floor. "I'm afraid it's just you and me so far, but feel free to come up stairs and shake the cold off," she added, gesturing up the stairs behind her. "I've got blankets, pillows, snacks, etc. etc."

The girl did not seem all that familiar to Libby, so she probably did not belong to the River Runners or the Twin Feathers. No, she didn't quite seem the outdoorsy type. She could have been a drifter who had just happened to pass by the library, or who had heard about Libby's gathering from other people around the area. Or she could have been a Mountain Lion. Yes, it was true, Libby really did not care for the Mountain Lions mainly because their tactics of keeping order frightened her. They were too similar to the raiding parties she had witnessed, killing people at will and supporting violent acts like cage fights. Were things so terribly boring these days that people had to resort to hurting (and even killing) each other? Was scavenging for a decent existence not enough to keep one busy?

But one could not dwell on such thoughts. It would just brew animosity, and Libby's goal was to spread understanding, and hopefully some form of peace. It did not matter if the girl was a Mountain Lion or not, she was welcome just the same - as long as she did not try to cause Libby physical harm.

Well, here was one pretty little Wolfette that she didn't recognize. Which was weird, since she knew just about everyone, at least in passing. There wasn't just a whole lot that escaped her broad and branching notice. Running the tip of her tongue over her top lip, she looked the other female up and down once. So, this was the bringer of world peace. Yeah, right. Like that was going to happen. At least now she had a face, and a name, to put with that crazy idea. "Libby, is it? Sweet."

And now, enter an important moment in time. She could either be square with the girlie in front of her, or she could lie. There were plenty of people in the Wolves who knew just who Slick was, even if the person standing in front of her didn't. So. Tell the truth, or lie. Truth, lie, truth, lie. Ah, damn. Truth. What could it hurt? Even if they did know who she was and what she did for a living, there wasn't just a whole hell of a lot they could do about it. She had to love all the privledges of power. The Mountain Lions had that in spades. "They call me Slick."

Unzipping her coat, she followed Libby up the stairs. "Not bad. It's such a hard time of year to get your hands on extra supplies, too." Already, she'd picked up on the kind of information that it normally took her hours in the least to get her hands on. She had to be grateful that they'd invited everyone. It even made her willing to keep her promise not to cause any unnecessary trouble. The longer they were voluntarily keeping her around, the more she could learn. "So. Libby. You threw all this together yourself? Or do the rest of the Wolves run with your idea?"

Of all of the things that Wolf had no desire to do, an inter-tribal slumber party was one of them. The very idea of their turf being opened to any and everybody rubbed him in all the wrong ways and the fact that they were invited to stay the night only made him more on edge. Still, after a good deal of argument with Libby he conceded to the idea. Part of him was curious to see exactly what would come of her little presentation. Of course there was no way he was going to allow any plans to be made that he didn't approve of, at least not on his watch. And that was really the main reason he'd shown up.

He found a spot upstairs beside one of the front windows so that he could watch people trickle in. A copy of Watership Down rested in his lap though he read little of the opened book. Wolf mused silently as he watched the wind throttle the few brown leaves that still clung to the branches of the large oak tress outside. His thoughts rested on Nova. He wondered somewhat bitterly if she would show up for the slumber party or if the rest of the tribe still couldn't compare to her time on the farm with Otter.

It was a human movement that caught his attention and as far as Wolf knew she was the first arrival. He leaned closer to the window until he couldn't see her anymore. Slick. He knew exactly who she was and thankfully he hadn't had too many close encounters with her. So Azrael had sent his favorite minion to the party? Shame the guy hadn't showed up himself. Still, there were ways in which Slick was more dangerous than Azrael himself.

Wolf turned as he heard footsteps and familiar voices on the stairs. He closed his book but kept it held tightly in his left hand as he walked towards the well of the stairs. He stopped a ways off and leaned against a book shelf. Wolf debated on the best way to address Slick. If he answered her question truthfully it would show Slick that the Wolves were divided on the idea of intertribal relations, specifically that he was in the midst of a major disagreement with Libby and that would show their weakness. On the other hand if he said they all agreed then she'd report back to Azrael that Wolf himself was behind the idea which was far from true. So he decided to simply talk down the question for now by interrupting Libby before she could answer it. "Slick, how kind of you to come. Though I'm surprised Azrael himself didn't come with you. I've never known him to miss out on an opportunity to partake in another tribe's goods." Ok, so maybe what he just said went against the whole vibe Libby was trying to put together but when it came to the Lions he sometimes couldn't help himself.

There was no time to wrangle an answer out of Libby. The moment they topped the stairs, they were confronted by someone who was in no way a stranger. Wolf. She'd had the pleasure of bumping in to him a few times in the past. Slick knew that he wasn't an easy target, and having him there complicated her 'mission'. He was the sort of person that cut right through the bull shit that she typically used to her advantage. Still, she wasn't discouraged. It may have been complicated, but there was a chance that it would be way more fun now.

"Wolf! How lovely to see you." Slick practically cooed at him. Just because he wasn't easily swayed didn't mean she couldn't try. After all, he was a good looking guy, and there was always a chance that he might suffer from momentary insanity and give in to her considerable charm. Not that everyone found Slick charming. Most of what she got, she got through a combination of sly flirtation and outright obnoxiousness. It worked pretty damn well for her. Hey, they hadn't kicked her out, right?

"Oh, he couldn't be bothered. He doesn't like to waste time with pointless endevors." It's not like it was any secret that the Mountain Lions scoffed at tribal peace. Anybody who thought that she was there to be sincere was badly mistaken, and had quite possibly been living under a rock for the last two years. Slick was just there to make sure that no plotting went on behind her tribes back. "He trusts me to bring back a satisfactory report. So, how has everything been?" She fluttered her eyelashes up at him. This was going to be the most amusing thing she did all month.

Just as Libby planned on stating that some of her tribe had pitched in, they were met with the sight of Wolf. She could not help but smile warmly at his presence. It meant the world to her that he actually bothered to show up. She knew she was asking for trouble with the whole "allowing enemy tribes into our territory" thing, but one had to at least try to avoid the guilt of inaction. She also knew how very much he was against the idea and vowed that she would return the huge favor somehow. But her smile faltered, and Libby suddenly felt very foolish. She really should have known who the girl was. One does not simply forget the top four members of the Mountain Lions. Truth be told, before her random sojourn, Libby had been content to remain in her library, largely untroubled by most. Wolf would pay her a visit occasionally to ask for advice, and being the removed, level-headed third party, Libby would give it. The affairs of the other tribes never really concerned her. As they say, "ignorance is bliss."

But she could no longer afford that ignorance. No one could, really. She probably should have studied up on the tribes a bit better before she planned this thing. No matter. It was one slip up. She would be more observant from now on (and remember to consult those whose job it was to dig up information).

For the first time in a while, Libby felt the sick twinge of jealousy in her gut at Slick's cooing. Technically, Wolf did not belong to Libby, but that did not stop her inner tiger from rearing up and snarling, "Back off, bitch." But her logical side won out and reminded her that the little harlot was from an enemy tribe, and Wolf would never do something so foolish as to get mixed up in something like that. He might be a horny bastard, but his pride would stop him.

With the "pointless endeavor" comment, Libby began to wonder why she (or anyone) would want peace with the Mountain Lions. On the whole they grated on one's nerves, and it took all will power for Libby to not respond with something snarky. "Honestly, if it's so pointless, then why are you here?" she brooded to herself.

"Things have been well," she replied cordially for Wolf, as if Slick were an old neighbor of hers and had asked about the weather. "And how has everything been with you?" Libby asked in return, clasping her hands behind her as they walked along. This was not going to be terribly easy for anyone, and she could already see that it was not too simple for Wolf as well. Libby had to set the example. If the broody little hermit could be nice to an enemy, anyone could.

Wolf closed the book and moved to hold it with both of his hands as if trying to create some sort of physical barrier between Slick and himself. “Hm, I wish I could say the same but I honestly can’t.” He gave her the glimmer of a sarcastic smile. Looking beyond the fact that Slick was a Mountain Lion and a manipulative wretch in Wolf’s eyes, she still was nowhere near his type. Then again, neither was Libby, but as of late she’d been catching his eye. Slick’s charm, or lack there of, had little effect on Wolf. Aside from the most base of physical attractions, Wolf was mostly repulsed by her slippery ways.

“Mm, right, pointless endeavors. You may have a point, the way that he sits behind a desk with his feet up all day is pretty important after all. We wouldn’t want to pull him away from all of his hard work.” Wolf was a leader that pulled his weight as the leader from both a physical and mental arena. That was one of the main things that Wolf detested about Azrael, the level of laziness that he perceived Azrael to possess.

Wolf worked right down in the dirt as hard as the hardest working tribe member and sometimes even harder. There were days when he would come home so exhausted that he would practically black out when he walked in the door. At times Nova even forced him to stop, telling him that he was going to kill himself. Wolf was never particularly out of shape before the virus but he certainly didn’t lead as physical a lifestyle as he now did. Soccer was about as physical as he got in his old life.

Wolf re-coiled from Slick and as casually as he could moved to Libby’s other said so that she was in between Slick and himself. He was thankful when Libby answered her next question as thus far he hadn’t been too successful in his efforts to keep the peace. He hoped that she was the only Lion who was going to show up. The last thing he wanted to deal with was a whole pack of the scum. He mumbled something about writing her report for her as Libby spoke with Slick as if the two of them were best friends. He studied Libby, surely her actions could not be a true representation of her thoughts.

Carbon had always been told to be careful of people he didn't know, and not just by his mother but by Sensei too. It had been a thoroughly cold few nights and he was starting to develop a fever and a cold that could knock his socks off, of course when it came to things like this he was useless, he would sniffle and feel sorry for himself like any other typical man because inside he was a child and would always be.

The day he heard shouting in the library had been a clue to stay away from the possibly warm building, but it had been quiet lately and the cold was getting worse. He'd taken a chance once though granted it hadn't done him any good, this chance couldn't be much worse, at least he could be warm. So swiftly but clumsily Carbon stumbled up the steps and threw himself in the double doors, shutting them thickly behind him and not very quietly either.

The voices around him told him to be quieter than he had been and he tiptoed around not wishing to get in trouble, in case he wasn't supposed to be here, and when he stopped he took the moment to admire the library in it's fullest. He was glad to see books still adorned the shelves and the centre desk look like it had been used recently. He walked carefully across the stone floor towards the stacks observing all the titles and running his hand down the spines.

"Maths," he said to himself scanning the shelves and sighing in dissappointment when he did not find them straight in front of him. Though when he stood on his tip toes to look at the top shelves (though he was tall enough to see) he spotted one, though it was right under a pile of others and upon reaching out to retrieve it his foot gave way and sent him flying forward, which sent the books flying forward onto the ground behind with a loud thwack.

It seemed being careful and quiet might have failed.

Shadow made her way to the library, carrying with her an armload of extra food and blankets. She wanted to support Libby's idea of getting all the tribes together. It was a good idea, if they all worked together they would have so much more talent and resources for surviving and rebuilding. Of course it seemed like a great idea when applied to the Twin Feathers or the River Runners. It seemed less promising when she considered working with the Mountain Lions. After the excitement the day before, having seen that tribe's latest handiwork, she wasn't looking forward to coming face to face with any of them. She didn't think any of them were likely to come to this little event anyway, since tribe unity wasn't exactly their sort of thing.

Only moments after she walked in the door, Shadow heard a crash from somewhere in the stacks. Rushing immediately to go investigate she found an unfamiliar man and a pile of books all scattered on the floor.

"Are you okay?" she asked.

Carbon felt his whole being jump even though he knew the books were going to crash to the ground. It was hard for Carbon to function sometimes as his brain did not always piece two and two together and he wasn't quite expecting someone to find out as quick as they did. If truth be told Carbon knew people were in the library but if it was anything like the hospital nobody would hear. The hospital halls were echoey but if you weren't within a five metre radius of someone you couldn't be heard...unless you were Blaze and had just blown something up, or a trap had gone off in the sewers.

His breath had started to quicken and his heart had sped up making him feel dizzy and he looked around in panic hoping that whoever had heard, would not come and shout at him.

When he did hear a voice his wide eyes settled on a girl smaller than himself (Though that wasn't hard as he towered over pretty much everyone) with a look on her face that didn't even get registered in his head (it was reading people's expressions that immediately escaped Carbon). Carbon felt his heart rate quicken but he found himself hurrying over the other side of the stacks and immediately setting out to pick them all up.

"Don't be mad," he pleaded looking up at her in dispair.

She was trying to work out whether she'd seen him before and what tribe he was from. He looked disheveled enough that he almost had to be a drifter and not from any tribe at all, but the look of wide-eyed innocent worry that he gave her made that hard to believe. His expression reminded her, as much as anything, of some of the children who lived out at the farm.

"Why would I be mad?" Shadow said, a little confused. She helped pick up some of the books. "I just heard the noise and came to see what happened. Besides I don't think even Libby would get mad about dropped books tonight, kinda goes against the whole tribal cooperation thing. Are you from the Twin Feathers?" She took a guess. It seemed like the most logical choice out of any of them.

Carbon tried to focus on picking up the books but his eyes kept wandering to the pretty girl beside him. She said she wasn't mad and carbon felt his heart lighten a little but it was still beating a little erratically. He had frightened himself more than he had realised.

Carbon frowned deeply almost as if he was about to burst a vein with the concentration and he shook his head wildly "I'm lost," he spoke letting his lip quiver, "Sensei's gonna be angry," he muttered gathering the books up rapidly in his arms and standing up slowly, "I was just looking for a math book," he stuttered picking it off the top once he had set them down on a nearby book cart and he hugged it to his chest nervously.

Eyes were still darting around, he had been told not to trust many people a thousand times over but he was in desperate need of help and this girl was nice, and very pretty.

Shadow set the books she picked up on the cart, then stood with her hands on her hips. She looked at the boy quizzically, although she made a point not to actually stare at him. He already seemed pretty nervous and she didn't want to do anything to upset him. There was something slightly off about him, she couldn't decide if he was slow or just incredibly socially awkward or something else entirely.

Part of her knew that she should be cautious. He could be totally unbalanced and even dangerous, especially if he'd been living out on the roads. Shadow hadn't had much to do with drifters, other than the ones who came to town to trade when it was warmer and the two she'd helped out just the day before, but like everyone else she'd heard the stories about the criminal, unbalanced, and psychopathic people who had taken to the roads. Anyone unknown could be a danger.

It was hard for her to believe that this sweet nervous boy could be any trouble though. If anything, he was the one in danger, especially if he was lost. "Is Sensei your friend?" she asked calmly. Shadow couldn't recall ever hearing of anyone by that name, but she wasn't especially well connected and didn't know all that many people outside her own tribe. "Is he around here somewhere? Maybe I could help you find him."

Carbon watched as the girl laid the books on the cart and looked up at him. Her words were soft telling him that she wasn't mad, at least not to the point of the yelling that had gone on in here a few days ago. Carbon nodded furiously.

"Sensei look's after me," he let out a small smile, "He takes care of me," he looked around himself awkwardly for a moment before shaking his head frantically again, "He's back at home," Carbon whimpered, "I would really like to go home please," his eyes held desperation and hopelessness and he sniffled then coughed making sure to do it far from the girl in front of him. Germs were gross.

Carbon had been missing for what Blaze thought must have been days. It sure had been quiet and the kids had been awfully bored since he'd been gone. Blaze told Sensei that he was going out to look for him that evening which was indeed true, but he also had another agenda. He'd heard from some of the last remaining drifters in town that the Wolves were having some sort of peace meeting. It wasn't often that he was able to interact with the other tribes, save for the nice Twin Feather girl who'd patched him up yesterday and this seemed like the best opportunity. Still, he would have to be careful. There would be no reason for a drifter to be there and if he claimed he was part of a certain tribe a real member of that tribe could easily call him on his bluff.

His hand was throbbing dully as he made his way into Wolf territory, one of the border guards nodding him past when he said he was on his way to the meeting. At least that was easier than he thought it was going to be. In his mind the Wolves were a presence as equally powerful as the Mountain Lions, if not even more so. The Lions tactics gave him the creeps so he was glad that the meeting with the Wolves. He was hoping to find a way in for the Carrion. He wanted more than anything to make their presence known and start up some sort of substantial relationship with one of the tribes, perhaps even merge with them. Still, what did they have to offer but young mouths to feed?

Blaze approached the library cautiously, the sign on the door only marginally easing his mind. The place didn't seem to be too busy yet which was somewhat of a bad thing as blending in and creating excuses would be a lot more difficult. He walked in through the lobby and stepped into the library. He was rather impressed with the setup, he didn't expect things to be so orderly or well, intact. How easily distracted he was. He started to wander off to the fiction section as leisurely as if the world hadn't collapsed around them two years ago, but the faint sound of a familiar voice brought him back to reality. He turned on his heel with a furrowed brow and went back in the direction of the voice. Hah! He'd found Carbon alright, and on the Wolves turf of all places. "Hey, Carbon." He walked up to the girl and his friend with a small grin. "Are you alright man?"

"Well then, we'll just have to get you home then. Do you know where that is?" Shadow asked patiently. "How did you get here?"

She had to wonder if either Sensei or 'home' were still anywhere to be found, or if he'd lost them years ago with the virus. Hopefully that wasn't the case. She really wanted to be able to help him, but of course Shadow generally wished she could help everyone, so that wasn't exactly a surprise. If they couldn't find his friend or his home though, she wasn't sure if there was anything else she could do. Well, they'd solve that problem when and if they came to it.

Actually, it seemed like they wouldn't come to that at all. A new voice interrupted the conversation and a grinning young man approached them. She didn't recognize this one either, but she wouldn't have any trouble believing that he was a drifter. He certainly looked the part more than his friend did. That also meant he looked a bit more like the sort of person she should be worried about. Even so, Shadow offered him a friendly smile. "Let me guess, you must be Sensei."

Carbon shook as his nerves had still not died down, he was starting to get very nervous and when he got nervous he got panic striken and began to mumble and whimper and make less sense than ever before. Carbon shook his head "I'm lost," he replied not really being able to form anymore words as his head was awfully clouded. He sneezed again.

He was about to whimper another apology for knocking the books over until feet coming up from behind the girl startled him and he averted his eyes to over his shoulder where he found his salvation standing. "Blaze!" he cried like a small child rescued by his own mother. He ran ahead of the other girl and stood behind Blaze hoping not to offend her by offering her a small smile when he'd turned back round and he sniffed, "I was lost," he told Blaze informantly.

It was no secret that Blaze was another person Carbon relied on, Sensei was his main leaning post but when in doubt he was always there to turn to and occasionally he could count on Blaze to go and grab him more old textbooks to work from, "I found some more maths," he held the book up.

Blaze nodded a friendly greeting to the girl before Carbon cried his name and offered the simple explanation of having been lost. He glanced over his shoulder as Carbon ran to hide behind him. "It's alright man I don't think this chick will bite. Then again you never know these days." He looked back to the girl with a wry grin. "No, fortunately I am not Sensei. I'm Blaze. What‘s your name?" He held out his left hand instead of his burned and bandaged right one to offer a shake. So much for blending in tonight. He wouldn't be surprised if even as untrusting as Carbon was he hadn't laid out all the secrets of the Carrion to this girl or someone else whether on purpose or inadvertently.

“More maths huh? Sorry Carbon but I forgot my library card and I don’t think the people here will want you taking their books.” He ran his teeth over his bottom lip, how on earth was he going to convince these people they were merely drifters passing through before winter started? He wasn’t sure, but he didn’t think that Carbon would play along with him in the whole drifter guise thing. Perhaps it was just best to get the both of them out of there. “Look, we’re just passing through Sundance, heading south you know, and he wandered off. I’m sorry if he’s caused any trouble.” He had no idea if she was a Wolf or what but he had come here to gather information not spill the truth of his tribe.

She had to smile as the young man ran to hide behind his friend. At least that was taken care of. The fact that the newest arrival was so casual and friendly also set her mind at ease. If they were drifters, they were at least the somewhat reasonable sort. "Nice to meet you Blaze, I'm Shadow." She shook Blaze's offered hand, her gaze wandering curiously to the bandages on his right hand. Whatever he'd done to his hand must have either been pretty sever or pretty recent to warrant that much covering. It was neatly done though and she wondered if he'd had anyone to help him with it.

"No, no. He hasn't caused any trouble. I was just worried about him, since he said he was lost. It's not exactly a good time of year to be wandering aimlessly, or wandering at all, in fact." She tilted her head slightly as she looked at both of them carefully. She didn't mean to seem suspicious or overly curious, but she also wasn't very good at hiding her emotions so that's probably exactly what it looked like. "You two should stay, if you like. This is meant to be a gathering to bring people from all the different tribes together, but it wouldn't hurt to have some people without a tribe as well. Plus, it's a lot warmer in here than it is out there. And we have math books."

Carbon looked at the girl with curiosity "You won't bit me will you?" he asked carefully completely missing the joke in Blazes tone of voice. Carbon watched as the other two exchanged pleasentries and he found himself starting to shift his weight from foot to foot.

He fiddled with the book in his hands and let his serene expression drop into a heavey frown, he looked down at the book before him crestfallen at the prospect of having to give the maths books up, "Oh," he mouthed pushing it away from him and waving it in front of the girl, "Here I'm sorry," he shook his head as guilt over took his body.

However Blaze's plans to get them both out of there as quick as possible weren't exactly going as he had planned because working with Carbon was sometimes like working with a three year old child and the mention of more maths books sent Carbon with a pleading gaze at Blaze, "Please," he whined, "We'll go home later, don't tell Sensei," he shook his head but had a slightly goofy grin on his face as he looked around the library. The books were very pretty and it had been ages since Carbon had seen an equation.

It would be a lie to say that Blaze wasn’t totally squirming under Shadow’s gaze. They were after all, fairly clean, carried no supplies and his hand was bandaged in a way that made it seem like he’d stopped by a doctor’s office and had it taken care of. It crossed his mind that perhaps he should have rolled in the dirt before coming. “Shadow huh? Nice name and it’s cool to meet you too.” He glanced back to Carbon who offered up the book to Shadow.

Blaze normally wasn’t the most patient person in the world but when it came to dealing with Carbon he gained an extra measure of patience. Carbon was really a great guy and the Carrion were all he had in this cruel world. Blaze watched the other boy with a grin. How someone could be so interested in math when there were things like fire to play with was beyond him. Then again not many kids had the parental-consented opportunity to play with fire like he did.

Blaze nodded to Shadow, “Good to hear he didn’t try to burn the place down or anything.” He looked back to Carbon, “Oh, no worries my man, I wouldn’t tell Sensei if my life depended on it. He won’t miss us around camp anyway.” It was funny to refer to the hospital as camp, but he wanted to present the idea that they were drifters in the most believable way as possible. He only hoped that Carbon would play along.

“Alright then, I we’ll stay awhile if you don’t mind. It sure is a lot warmer here than out in the woods.” Sure he didn’t live in the woods but for as cold as the hospital was they may as well have. “I’m afraid I’m not really into math, but I’m sure Carbon will have a field day.” He smiled at his friend then looked back to Shadow as he moved to put his hands in his pockets. He winced as his formally numb injury sent a shock of pain up straight through his hand. “Ugh…God..”

"Thanks." She was oddly charmed by the fact that he'd complimented her name. Odd and charming were pretty good words to describe this strange pair of drifters in general. There was something that didn't seem right about them, but since they didn't seem dangerous she wrote it off as normal everyday paranoia on her part.

"No. I won't bite." She smiled and gently pushed the book back at Carbon. "I wouldn't know what to do with that. Why don't you hold on to it until you guys leave." She still thought Carbon seemed very sweet and innocent, although Blaze's comment about him tying to burn the place down worried her slightly. She wondered if he was joking or if that was really something the boy was likely to do. Maybe they should have a fire extinguisher handy just in case.

"We don't mind," she said, even though she didn't really have the authority to speak for the group, or even for her tribe. "Just don't cause any trouble, all right?" She was trying to act in the spirit of citywide harmony though. Hopefully she wouldn't end up regretting it.

Shadow couldn't help but notice Blaze's pained reaction when he moved his injured hand. "What did you do to your hand?"

Carbon smiled wide as the book was pushed back towards him and he wrapped two arms around it. He liked this lady, she was most definately a nice person, and she wasn't shouting yet; that was always a good sign.

Carbon looked up at Blaze who seemed to be doing nothing but staring at the girl and the smile dampened. He wondered if Sensei had gone mad without him being there, he was quite scared to go back to the hospital because it wasn't like he wasn't warned that he should not have gone outside. But he'd been found now, and with a brand new textbook to flick through.

Carbon scoffed at the trouble part and let out a wry smile. Blaze was good at causing trouble. "Okay," he sighed content that Blaze wasn't going to rat him out. And with that Carbon sat down on the floor and started to flick through the book.

Blaze grinned at the motherly tone that Shadow used with them when she told them not to cause any trouble. She had probably meant to sound a bit more threatening but really it had come out endearingly in Blaze’s perception. Of the two of them, Blaze was really someone to be more cautious of than Carbon. While any trouble Carbon caused was usually unintentional, Blaze’s trouble-causing was usually very well planned out. “No worries man, no trouble.” He gave her a half salute.

Laze looked down at Carbon as he sat down, “Don’t read too hard we still have to walk home.” He shook his head, still not understanding the other’s fascination with what he considered to be a horribly stuffy subject. “I’ll have to teach you how to juggle flaming bowling pins some day man, help you live a little.”

He gave up on putting his hands in his pockets and cradled his injured one in his whole one. He looked back to Shadow when she asked what he’d done. He wondered if he should tell her all the details…that wouldn’t have helped his non-trouble making image now would it? So he left it simple and waited to see if she would press for more details on her own. He shrugged, “I burned it.”

Shadow rolled her eyes at Blaze's half salute, although she was more amused than anything else. She glanced at Carbon with a conspiratorial smile. "Something tells me that out of the pair of you he's the troublemaker. Keep an eye on him, huh?"

She noticed with some interest that Blaze had said 'walk home'. That seemed like an odd choice of words for a drifter unless they were camping somewhere long-term, maybe even thinking of staying through the winter. Then again, maybe she was reading too much into it. It was just a word after all. A few years ago it would have been a perfectly normal thing to say, and old habits died hard.

She glanced at his hand again, when he explained that he'd burned it. Well, that would explain how well covered it was. It looked like too much bandage for any sort of cut, but burns tended to be more wide spread, and more painful too, unfortunately for him. He seemed to be coping with it pretty well though.

"Mhm. While you were juggling flaming bowling pins, was it?" She didn't really think that was how he'd hurt his hand, but since it looked like he'd already had some sort of medical attention she didn't have any reason to press him about it. "That's a dangerous hobby. Maybe you should have your friend teach you some math instead, you're less likely to get burned."

Carbon shook his head, completely missing the smile and the tone of voice, "Blaze looks after me," he replied slightly puzzled that this girl did not know that, "Though I do want my rats back," he replied as an after thought looking up at his friend hopefully. Sensei always hated the rats.

Carbon watched as the two exchanged words and how their faces changed. Carbon sometimes felt lonely when he saw other people talking quite animatedly, a simple smile or tone of voice was often lost on him and it had often made him the butt of all jokes in the past, not that Carbon didn't understand that if you laughed you found something funny or were happy; it was the subtler things that he missed. He considered himself very lucky he was surrounded by people so concerned with keeping him safe. Patience was a word he knew the meaning of but had little of himself, the people surrounding him had it in bucket loads.

"He juggles!" Carbon exclaimed beaming up at them both, he found it thoroughly amusing when Blaze juggled for him and the kids, "Maybe he'll show you," Carbon hadn't really realised the looks that Blaze might have been sending him. "He sucks at maths!" he added as a finishing line, he did really suck at math unusually badly.

He rolled his eyes at being called the trouble maker of the two. It was indeed true, or at least in the way that most of Blaze’s trouble-causing was intentional on some level. “Hm, what’s life without a little trouble eh?” He shot carbon a sharper glance than he meant to when he mentioned rats. Rats meant sewers and sewers, unfortunately, meant Carrion. “Hah! Rats!” He looked away from Carbon and gave Shadow a little shake of the head with a small frown as he whispered, “We found this rat in a barn once, it was hurt and he wanted to help it. The damn thing died and ever since he’s felt so bad about it that he thinks he needs pet rats to make up for it.” He glanced over at Carbon, hoping that he wasn’t heard, or that Carbon would at least play along with him if he had heard him.

“Math is boring and pointless now, isn’t it? Besides, life wouldn’t be any fun without a bit of fire.“ Juggling was really the least amazing of his performance talents but he didn’t really have the desire nor the means to have shared any of his other talents. He grinned at Carbon with a modest roll of the eyes. “Yeah, I do suck at math and honestly I can hardly juggle either, it’s nothing really.” He gave Carbon a dude-shut-up look. The last thing he needed was for them to put on some magic show and attract the attention of the entire library. Speaking of which, had started to fill up considerably. Blaze shifted his weight as he started to get nervous. It really was too late in the season for drifters and he was playing what could be a potentially dangerous game. Not everyone he met was going to be so kind as Ruby had been.

Speaking of Ruby. He saw her walk in the doors out of the corner of his eye. Oh great, that was the last thing he needed. Wouldn’t she wonder why he was still in town, and with the tribes no less. “Look, we better get going, it’s getting late and we’re heading out tomorrow.” He zipped his jacket, “Carbon, let’s go..”

The day had been very uneventful for Ruby. Not even a scraped knee to patch up! It was kind of odd, but she wasn't complaining. It meant that she had more time to spend hanging out with Tink. Which really meant spending the day reading The Adventures of Peter Pan and getting some thing done like patching up some of her and Tink's clothes. The oldest ones got torn into scraps and made into quilts and such. It seemed her talents weren't only in medicine, but in domestic things as well. Go figure. But it wasn't a bad thing anyway.

She was trying to get as much done as she could in order to make it to the slumber party for all the tribes at the Sundance Library. Tink wanted to go and had been bouncing around the treehouse all day long in her excitement. It put a smile on Ruby's face, of course. She was looking forward to this slumber party as well. It was a step in the right direction when it came to inter-tribal peace. Ruby wanted inter-tribal peace more than anything. It would make this new kind of world so much more peaceful to live in.

Once everything was done and she and Tink were dressed and ready, they made the trip from the Canopy to the city. The library was a familiar sight by then and they went inside, Tink staying at Ruby's side as she looked around at the people already there. Ruby did recognize some of the people, but chose to keep to herself. Tink went off to speak to some other kids that she knew.

Ruby stood by herself, near where the shelves of books began at the front of the library. Maybe someone she knew well would turn up?
