Got a question? Don't get something, need something clarified, or thought of something totally different that you want to run by me? Just leave a comment here and I'll answer as soon as I can :D I'm happy to answer anything and everything, even if you think it's a stupid question.
Before you ask though, here's a little bit more detail about a few aspects of the game's story.
Civilisation, 2090
While set in New York, 70 years in the future, human civilisation hasn't changed too much. Technology is slightly more advanced, for example with better computers, advancements in AI, more high tech security systems, and buildings that look more futuristic and incorporate more advanced technology. There are no flying cars, robots or ray guns, or anything like that, although research continues in such a direction.
The diseases we suffer from today are still present in 2090, as well as many newer strains of existing viruses and bacteria.
Society still suffers from poverty and homelessness, crime is still present. People are still divided by race and religion, and the division between "upper class" and "lower class" remains.
Music, Games, TV Shows, Movies, etc.
All of today's music, games, TV shows, movies and the like are 'moved forward' into this future world. So in this future world, the current music is still artists such as Timbaland or Madonna, the current movies are still things like The Matrix or 300. Whatever is modern for you and me, is modern for the characters in this AU world. Just remember that whatever you do, do not mention Asian artists or actors by name. Asian music and movies still exist, of course.
While modern computer games are also modern in this AU world, the older systems they were played on or not - so a Gameboy Advance or the original Nintendo console are considered to be electronic antiques.
All of todays modern TV shows are also modern in this AU world, however: X-Men and Heroes does not exist. There are still comicbook superheroes like Spiderman or Batman, but X-Men was never created, and Heroes was never filmed. This is because these two are too similiar to what is going on with our mutant characters.
The Deviant Strain
Two medicines were researched and tested on human subjects. One was to be a cure, the other a vaccine. Neither worked, or seemed to have any effect on the test subjects.
The test subjects later went on to have children. These children carried in them a slightly altered genetic code that went unnoticed. It was dormant, and had no effect on the carrier. There were two types, based on whether their parent had been used for testing the cure or the vaccine.
These children matured and had children of their own - the current generation. It is these that carry the active deviant strains of DNA, the two fully mutated forms that has caused noticable change. There are two strains, and each one has it's own effects: the first is stable and effects it's carriers in the same way, the other is unstable and changes drastically from individual to individual.
To fit best into the timeline, it is suggested your character be between 18 and 35 years of age.
Mutants
Mutants are the grandchildren of those who were given the test cure. Their strain of mutated DNA is unstable, and causes drastically different mutations in each carrier although each mutation falls under the category of being an 'ability'. It is unsure what causes the mutation to be so drastically different in each individual, although it is apparant that each individual only has a single ability.
Unless posessing an ability that makes it otherwise, mutants are like humans in most ways: they will age the same, get the same sicknesses, die from the same things, be hurt the same ways.
Some mutants are aware of their abilities, others are not. Some discover them at a young age, some much later.
Time travel is not an allowed ability, due to the mechanisms of it. Most other abilities will be accepted, but please don't create an invincible, god-like, impossible-to-kill character. If you're stuck for ideas, take a look at these pages that list abilities and powers for: Heroes and X-Men.
Mutant blood cannot "infect" others, but the mutated DNA will be passed down onto their children.
Vampires
Vampires are the grandchildren of those who were given the test vaccine. Their strain of mutated DNA is stable, and effects each one in the same way. They are faster and stronger than humans, with better eyesight and hearing. They are more resistant to illness, and heal faster from injuries - but an injury that is fatal to a human will also be fatal to a vampire. Their teeth are sharper than a human's, but appear no different unless the vampire is about to feed, or tempted to feed; then, their canine teeth will grow into longer, sharper fangs, and return to normal again afterwards.
They will hunger for blood, but they do not need it to survive. One who does not feed on blood will not be as strong or fast or heal as quickly as one who does feed on blood. Those who feed on blood will not age, and are capable of living forever as long as they continue to consume blood. Quantity does not matter, as long as it is regular. Animal blood or blood from bloodbank storage can be used but will not be as appealing or effective as fresh blood. Feeding from a live human will not necessarily kill the human.
Sunlight will not kill the vampires, but prolonged exposure will give them severe sunburn. This can be prevented somewhat by clothing and sunlotion. Sunlight will not bother them if they are inside or in the shade. Bright lights hurt their eyes, and they are most comfortable at dusk and dawn. They can see at night but also rely on their hearing. Vampires who feed on blood will have better eyesight at night, but will also be more sensitive to daylight.
Holy water, etc., has no effect on them. They are not demons; they are a form of evolved (or mutated) human.
Vampires have no abilities like mutants do. Vampires can infect others with their blood, effectively creating new vampires - some don't realise this, some do. This infection can occur through a human drinking vampire blood, or other blood to blood contact.
It is uncertain what would happen if a vampire infects a mutant.
Like mutants, vampires will pass the mutated DNA down to their own children.
Mutant x Vampire Offspring
It is uncertain what would happen if a mutant and vampire were to have a child together. One strain might overwrite the other, or perhaps the two strains would combine together to create a new form of mutant strain.
