Celebrating Severus Snape in all his flawed glory!
|Name:||Bring Back the Bastard|
Welcome to deeply_horrible, a community devoted to characterisations of Severus Snape as—for lack of a better word—a bastard. (No, not the kind born of unmarried parents.)
Snape in canon proves to be a hero, ultimately on the side of good. But this fact doesn't cancel out or compensate for his thorny and sometimes bizarre behaviour. Severus Snape can be an absolute arsehole while saving your life. He's malicious and whispery, cold-eyed and passionate, a professor who delights in making his students squirm. As a teenager, he possessed a gift for inventing dangerous Dark spells; as an adult, he lurks in the shadows.
According to JKR, "Snape is a very sadistic teacher [...] He's ... spiteful. [...] He remains rather cruel, a bully, riddled with bitterness and insecurity—and yet he loved, and showed loyalty to that love and, ultimately, laid down his life because of it."
We acknowledge and honour Snape's bravery and self-sacrifice, but are equally keen to preserve his darker side, those aspects of his character that are not nice or pleasant. We're fascinated by the fact that Snape is profoundly flawed, and we find his flaws worth exploring. We enjoy playing with the less than savoury aspects of his personality.
Feel the same? Then read the information below and consider taking part in our first fest to Bring Back the Bastard.
The community also hosts discussion posts and recs. You needn't sign up for the challenge to participate in the discussions or to contribute recs. Please read the rules for posting discussions here. The recs post, along with the rules for contributing recs, can be found here.
We have mirror communities at dreamwidth and here at insanejournal, but fest posting will primarily take place at our livejournal presence (unless it goes berserk, in which case we shall move to dreamwidth).
Come celebrate Snape in all his flawed glory! Let’s examine how "deeply horrible"—and how truly complex—he can be.
BRING BACK THE BASTARD!
The Bring Back the Bastard Challenge is an anonymous prompt-based challenge that embraces and celebrates the bastardly aspects of Severus Snape's character. Gen, slash, het and meta works of all ratings are welcome.

Participation, Prompting and Sign-Ups
To participate in the fest, please read the rules below, then join and friend the community. If you do not have a livejournal account, you can participate in the fest using Open ID (click here for more information about Open ID).
Prompting will be open from July 30th to August 5th (2012). Prompts will not be screened; if you wish to leave a prompt anonymously, anonymous commenting will be enabled but screened. Leaving a prompt does not oblige you to participate in the fest. It also does not count as a sign-up.
Sign-ups will take place from August 6-12. They will be screened (as this is an anonymous fest). To sign up, copy the template provided in the sign-up post into a comment and fill in the corresponding information. All of the prompts will have been collected and organised into a list. Please choose at least three prompts (you may also choose your own prompts or a wild card).
Prompt Assignment and Acceptance
Prompts will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. You will receive an e-mail from the mod with your assigned prompt (one of the prompts you listed) by August 13th. Please respond to this e-mail by August 16th so that your e-mail address and acceptance of that particular prompt can be verified. Once you have accepted your first prompt, you may sign up to claim another, if you so wish.
Also, please friend dhorrible_mod for general updates and participant-specific information.
Participants must include a date of birth or an age statement in their user profile confirming they are at least eighteen years old.
All entries must include bastard!Snape. Entries that fail to focus on bastard!Snape will not be accepted. If you don't like the word bastard, here are some other ways to think about Snape's character: as ambiguous, ambivalent, annoying, appalling, arrogant, bitter, brilliant, brooding, brusque, bullying, calculating, callous, capricious, childish, closed-off, cold-eyed, crafty, creepy, cruel, dark, deceptive, demanding, determined, eerie, elusive, explosive, ferocious, frightening, greedy, grudging, hardened, inscrutable, insecure, insulting, irrational, jaded, jealous, loyal, maddening, malicious, masochistic, melodramatic, morally dubious, nasty, obsessive, obstinate, oddball, oily, passionate, petty, petulant, proud, possessive, repellent, rude, ruthless, sadistic, sarcastic, savage, scruffy, selfish, self-punishing, severe, shady, shallow, shifty, shrewd, sly, sneaky, spiteful, stingy, sullen, temperamental, tyrannical, unfair, unnerving, unpredictable, unreasonable, unsporting, vengeful, vicious, volatile, volcanic, vulnerable, wild . . .
You have free rein to experiment with these terms, to subvert and deconstruct and interpret them as you wish. Just remember, our primary interest is in seeing these sides of Snape explored.
Rules for Written Entries
Fic and meta entries must contain at least 500 words (unless you choose to write a poem or have a very good reason, in which case, let's talk), but there is no upper limit on how much you can write. All texts should be beta read. If you don't have a beta, please let us know and we will find one for you. Your entries should be submitted in a format suitable for pasting into an LJ entry, containing the proper html and LJ-specific coding. Entries should include a header (to be provided) and be emailed as .txt, .rtf, .doc, .docx or .pages files to deeplyhorrible [at] gmail [dot] com by midnight (US Eastern Time) October 28, 2012.
Rules for Art and Multimedia Entries
We are only able to accept art entries less than or equal to 800 by 600 pixels in size. Your entries should be original and beta'd. Art must be submitted in the form of .gif, .jpeg, or .png files and include a header (to be provided). Art headers should be formatted in a manner suitable for pasting into an LJ entry, containing the proper html and LJ-specific coding, and e-mailed as an attached .txt, .rtf, .doc, .docx or .pages document to deeplyhorrible [at] gmail [dot] com by midnight (US Eastern Time) October 28, 2012.
No photomanipulations or art modelled on Alan Rickman, please.
If you choose to submit an entry combining art and text, there is no minimum word count. Please include a marker/markers within the text of your entry to indicate where the art belongs. You may include as many pieces of art as you wish, so long as they fit (together with the header and any text) into one DW entry (ask the mod if you aren't sure). Include the header in the text, which should be formatted in a manner suitable for pasting into an LJ entry, containing the proper html and LJ-specific coding, and saved as a .txt, .rtf, .doc, .docx or .pages document. Please send your complete entry to deeplyhorrible [at] gmail [dot] com by midnight (US Eastern Time) October 28, 2012.
If you wish to submit an entry using other media, please contact the mod and we can discuss your options.
This is meant to be a low-stress challenge. If you need to drop out, that's fine—worst case, there will simply be one less entry for the fest. Please do us the courtesy of sending an e-mail to deeplyhorrible [at] gmail [dot] com to let us know.
Extensions will be granted if you write to the above address in advance (at least 6 hours, please) of your deadline.
