Thread: Alicia and Miles
Who: Alicia Spinnet and Miles Bletchley
When: Late Evening, September 27, 1997
Where: A small wizarding pub.
What: Miles had been planning a pub crawl before Alicia so rudely interrupted it with her witty banter with him. Despite their little exchange, Alicia agrees to accompany him on this alleged pub crawl because she's a big girl and can take care of herself. Big, bad ex-Slytherins don't frighten her!
Rating: We'll mark it PG-13 to be safe for now.

She wasn't sure what possessed her to accept Miles' invitation on this pub adventure. She was trying to find a reason or make an excuse, but she could only come up with insomnia or the fact that she was going insane thanks to her father. Neither were a really good reason, so she was quite defeated there.

It wasn't going to be bad. It wasn't. She could handle herself and if Miles, or any other bloke, tried anything, she'd either curse them two ways to Sunday or hit them. Hard. Despite her appearance, Alicia could hit hard and could taken down a grown man with two good punches; one to the face and one to the stomach. So she wasn't afraid of anyone trying anything too questionable on her.

She had decided to meet Miles at the pub as arriving together could prove to be difficult to explain. Not that she didn't see a problem with explaining there was nothing wrong with who she was meeting, but it was the principle of the situation.

It was already smelling quite sour even from the outside and it was quite loud. As people came and went, though in small groups of two or three, the loud chattering came pouring out and was soon silenced by the door. So far, all the couples parties were so pissed that one or the other were holding the other up. There were the ones, though, that felt heavy displays of affection were key to making the rest of the night magical, apparently.

She stood, arms crossed comfortably crossed against the smooth material of the fitted, long-sleeved, scoop-neck tee shirt in a bright shade of blue and let out a sigh. If he didn't show up, she was going to be genuinely miffed that she came all the way out here at such an hour in the evening to be stood up.

Miles was torn between surprise and dread that Alicia decided to accept his invitation to the pub. He was planning to meet up with a few blokes he met through his cousins at a impromptu Quidditch game a few weeks ago, but he wasn't quite sure if that would be the best idea now. They were very rowdy men and Alicia may not appreciate them very much (not that Miles cared what Alicia appreciated).

A few minutes later than their meeting time, Miles Apparated from his parents' house and appeared in an alleyway, out of Muggle-sight, a few blocks down. It took him no time to get to the pub.

As he approached, Miles recognized the very familiar, small, brunette woman standing with her arms crossed and grinned to himself. "Well, well," he said as he came up to Alicia, "Aren't we looking lovely this evening."

Alicia turned her attention to the familiar voice and gave Miles a very quick once over. She wouldn't lie to herself. Miles had always been one of the more attractive blokes on the Slytherin Quidditch team. It also wasn't completely untrue that she had thought about just what it would be like to snog him in the broomshed.

But they were past that and they were considered of-age and adults now. Not to mention they were both arranged in marriages. But that didn't really seem to be important to anyone but the parents.

"Bletchley. Late as always, I see." She paused, throwing a very quick glance back at him. "...Thanks." She was going to take it where she got it. Especially from him considering she was fairly certain compliments, whether they were sincere or not, didn't come from him often.

"So, are you going to buy the first round, then?"

It was true that the Slytherin group of boys weren't some of the most attractive people in the world. If you could say one thing for them, it was that they had very high opinions of themselves. Miles definitely did, that was for sure. While in Hogwarts, it was doubtful that anyone would have pegged him for one of the best looking guys, but that didn't bother him much. It was all about personality. And Miles thought he had a load of fantastic personality traits.

Unfortunately, just because he was of-age and an adult it didn't mean that Miles was very mature. He could fake it, of course, but really he just wanted to party and have a good time. Work wasn't on his mind in the slightest.

"Alicia, darling, relax. I had to make myself look handsome for you, didn't I?" Miles smirked at her and instead of standing there to talk longer, he walked directly to the door of the pub and pushed it open. The loudness of the place hit him immediately, but his face remained neutral. He was used to this atmosphere.

Before he actually entered the place, Miles looked back at Alicia, "I'll buy the first couple, yes." He didn't have as much money with him now that he spent the majority of it on the Weasleys' products. His father was being a complete arse lately and it seemed that his funds were being limited. Miles did not like this at all.

She hesitated for only a moment, but grinned, walking inside as he held the door open. "Good. Maybe you'll be able to keep up then." She brushed past him with a casual toss of hair over her shoulder.

Alicia wasn't a girl who went out to pubs all the time or went to numerous wizarding parties and clubs. She'd never really done that sort of stuff merely because it was stuff that never really interested her. She had never been boy crazy, despite some of the things she kept and said, and she did her best to always keep a good, straight head on her shoulders.

But working and dealing with a father as mad as hers was getting could easily put a strain on any person. Not to mention her life lines, Katie Bell and Angelina Johnson, were on the other bloody side of the world. Of course, she knew she could also go to Fred and George, but they were guys. While their friendship was certainly quite valued, it wasn't the same as Katie and Angelina.

Not that Miles was, either, but he would certainly help get out any frustration and stress she had pent up inside. Perhaps not him personally, but the atmosphere and drinks. But not too many. She didn't want to end up doing something she'd regret in the morning -- like waking up next to Miles Bletchley.

It was crowded and loud and already wreaked once she was inside and moving towards the overly crowded bar. Naturally there was no place to stand, so she stood, hands on her hips and finally turned her attention to Miles. "A pint is fine. Unless you think something else is better..." She'd put some trust in him that he wouldn't put something odd in her drink and dump her off in some alley somewhere.

"I have no problem keeping up, thank you very much," Miles retorted, watching her as she walked by him. He smirked and followed her inside. It always amazed Miles how busy places like this could get on a weekday night. Wizards seemed to never be too busy to have a drink with some mates. The reason he decided on this particularly pub was because it had a good age range. There were younger people all the way to the old fogies who would sit in the corner and shake their heads at the antics of the newest generation.

As they made their way toward the bar, Miles instantly started scoping out a table elsewhere. The bar was never empty and if Alicia frequented such places, she would have known that. When Miles caught sight of an empty (but dirty) table, he kept his eye trained on it.

"No, that will do good for you I think," Miles said, turning his own attention back to Alicia, "Hey, why don't you go have a seat over at that table." He pointed to a place in the middle of the section of crowded tables, "I'll get the drinks and meet you there."

Alicia hesitated for a moment, but complied and made her way over to the table. She made a face after seeing it and plucked a few napkins from a passing waitress to give it a quick wipe. She wasn't expect it to be spotless inside, but she at least wanted something decent to sit at.

It was much louder than she had expected and she found herself already with ringing ears. It was a bit smokey, too, which was making her eyes water just a bit. And it smelled extremely sour inside. Typical pub. She wasn't sure just why she agreed to meet with Miles anymore.

Oh. Right. Because she didn't want to back down and have another thing for him to use against her. Not that he had a lot of ammunition, but she wasn't going to add to what he probably had.

She sat and waited, fiddling with a strand of hair and keeping her eyes on the table until Miles got back with their drinks.

When Alicia finally gave in and went to the table, Miles walked away to compete for the bartenders attention at the bar. The only way he had a chance at getting the drinks quickly was if the person behind the bar happened to be a girl. Or gay. Either way, it would work. Unless they didn't find Miles attractive, which wasn't the sort of negative thinking that he had in the first place.

Luckily, it was a woman. But not the sort of woman Miles had hoped for. This woman was tough. The way she was handling the drinks sort of made Miles nervous and she didn't get to him until she was through with the people who were there before him. Unfortunately, it took nearly fifteen minute, which is close to a decade in a pub.

When Miles finally returned to the table where Alicia sat, he sighed and sat the two pints down and seated himself at the chair opposite Alicia. "I apologise that it took so long, but you saw how many people were up there. Unfortunately the person serving the drinks couldn't be swayed by galleons or even attractive people." He eyed Alicia for a moment before picking up his drink and taking a healthy swig.

Alicia leaned up a bit to glance over at the bar, catching a quick glance at the bartender and nodded slowly, settling back down in her chair. "She probably didn't find you attractive. Now, if I had gone over, it may have been better." She was joking of course and the grin on her face made that obvious.

She watched him for a moment and took her own drink and took a long drink from her own pint and set it down, wiping her mouth against the back of her hand.

"So. Do you do this sort of thing often or is there a special occassion we should be celebrating?"

Miles leaned forward slightly, one elbow on the table, and grinned, "Is it possible for someone not to find me attractive? She probably is one of those lesbians." But the truth was that she was probably asexual. It didn't seem like she was catering to anyone.

Miles watched Alicia drink and raised one eyebrow for a moment, "Thirsty?" He actually didn't like the taste of the drink, but he paid for it so he would finish it.

After readjusting himself against the chair, Miles took another drink and then prepared to answer Alicia's question, "Very often. Almost every night." That probably made him seem pathetic. Or careless. Either way, it probably wasn't something that made him stand out in a good way. He was just so bloody bored. "But I suppose tonight could be a celebration of sorts."

"If you drink it down quickly, it doesn't taste as bad." That's what she had come to learn anyway. And it was true! It also didn't sit too heavy on the stomach if you drank it fast. And, luckily, it didn't effect her the way harder alcohol would have.

"All right, then. What are we celebrating? The fact that I'm clearly amazing, won our argument or that you managed to get me to come out with you?" Alicia gave him a grin and raised her drink to him. "Either way, cheers." And tilting the pint back, she finished off her first one and let out a long sigh upon setting it back on the table.

"So, are you always so charming in your writing or do you save it for seeing people in person?" She asked with a raised brow and a smirk.

Miles laughed at her logic, "What if I like the taste?" Which was ridiculous, since he didn't. The faster he drank, the more wasted he became and for some reason he didn't necessarily want to get that way too fast tonight.

"I think we can celebrate all of that," Miles agreed and watched her drink. "I told one of the waitresses to keep them coming, so you won't be out for long." Finally, he drank to what they were 'celebrating' and finished his own drink off. On cue, a waitress came by to dump off two more pints and pick up the empty glasses. "Cheers," he said, lifting the second pint to his lips.

With half the second gone already, Miles wiped at his mouth with the back of his hand and then shifted until he was comfortable in his chair. "I'm always charming no matter if it's in writing or in person," he informed her, "Why? Do you like it?" One of his eyebrows hitched slightly as he spoke.

"Then drink it as slow as you like, Mister Bletchley." Alicia sat back as her empty glass was taken and a new one was set in front of her. Well, at least she knew how to take a girl to bar and treat her well. If getting her sloshed was really well.

She lifted the fresh glass to him following his 'Cheers' and took a well-sized drink from it, holding it slightly tilted in her hands. "Won't be out long? Do you plan on getting me pissed enough to carry me home or something?" She raised a brow with a grin and took another, but smaller, drink.

She was quiet for a minute, setting her glass down, and idly traced her finger against the rim. "Should I like it?"

Fortunately for Alicia, Miles didn't really intend to get her wasted. At least not in the way that he intended to get other girls he brought to pubs wasted. She came on her own and he wasn't looking to hook up with her. Or anyone, for that matter. He went through periods where he just didn't want to be with a woman and now was one of them. Perhaps he was just too spent from previous one-night stands.

Miles heaved a sigh and pressed his lips together for a few seconds before replying, "Would you want me to carry you home? I mean, given the situation." He pointed to his drink, "Chances are someone will have to carry me home as well. Maybe even you." Now that would be something.

"You should like it if you want to like it," he answered easily. Miles watched her trace the rim of the glass and smiled to himself. It was quite funny that Alicia Spinnet was flirting with him.

"If I tried to carry you home, I'm afraid we'd both end up on a corner somewhere since I probably wouldn't be able to make it." She paused, taking another long drink from her glass and looked over at him. "So, I would just rely on apparation and pray I didn't splinch you." She shrugged and finished off her second glass, sitting back in her chair.

She blinked as her glass was taken and a new one set down and sighed. Three was usually her limit, but she had a feeling Miles could go far beyond three, which wouldn't be good for her.

"Well, then..." She trailed off, shrugged and took a drink of the new glass. "I'll think about it."

"Splinch me? If you're toasted too, then I'd be afraid of you splinching the both of us, honestly," not that he would let himself become that drunk that he couldn't get home alone.

Miles could go far beyond three, but not much. He would probably go slow from then on. "Better slow down, Spinnet," he warned her.

"How much thought will it take?" he asked, genuinely curious.

"Why? Afraid you won't be able to catch up?" she asked, followed by a soft hiccup. She snickered and finished off her third and let out a sigh when the fourth was set down in front of her. She was already feeling a bit fuzzy in her forehead and the less attractive blokes were looking highly attractive. That was never a good sign.

Alicia was quiet, truly contemplating his question as she stared at the fourth glass sitting in front of her.

"How much do you think it should take?"

Miles heard the hiccup and laughed lightly, "No, not afraid of that," he replied, smiling all the time. "Just don't want you to do something you'll regret." He didn't mean with him or that it would have to be something bad in the first place. Alcohol lowered inhibitions and that could lead to a mess of things that Miles wasn't ready to deal with.

Miles started to shake his head at her question, "Do you always answer questions you don't want to answer with questions?"

"Do you?" She raised a brow, finishing off the drink with a good, long drink. It gave her a momentary pain in the side of her head, but it was gone as quickly as it had come.

She sat back in her chair, sinking down in a bit. It was nice to get out and not think about what was waiting for her at home and all that rubbish. That's all it was, really.

"I'll regret having to marry some bloke I don't know or like or love. I regret not going into hiding somewhere and not protecting my Mum. This," she paused and waved her hand in the air. "is all ridiculous if you ask me."

Miles sat across for Alicia, quite speechless. Apparently alcohol made her open up a bit about what was going on in her life, not that he didn't know a bit about it already.

"Alicia," he started, using her first name instead of her last, "You have to live in the moment. You can't look behind you or in front of you for answers and you certainly shouldn't regret your decisions." The bit about her mother made him uneasy, though and Miles shifted a bit in his chair.
