Lavender Isabella Brown ([info]lavvy) wrote in [info]dearlyrpg,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Lavender Brown and Padma Patil
When: Sunday, September 27, 1997; around 8pm
Where: Gryffindor Common Room
What: Padma comes to the Gryffindor common room to hang around with Lavender and catch up.
Rating: PG, I think.

There were still a few random students lingering in the common room finishing up homework when Lavender came down from her dorm room. She had tried to go to sleep right after dinner but she didn't have any luck. Lately, nightmares had plagued her and Lavender often woke up several times during the night. Tonight was no different. Instead of just lying awake for hours on end, Lavender thought it best to get up and move around, but first she wrote in her journal to see if anyone else wanted to hang out with her. Once she was done, Padma wrote back to her rather quickly and they arranged to meet in the next few minutes.

While she waited for the knock at the Common Room door, Lavender's mind started to wander a bit. She was doing quite well in school so far this year. She had done all of her assignments on time and even studied a bit. That wasn't what she was worrying over. It was the strange men patrolling the halls and the heavy feeling of trouble hanging on her shoulders. She knew that she was no where as good of a Seer as Professor Trelawney, but she felt that she could See something coming. Something bad. The few times she confided in one of her friends, they usually rolled their eyes and told her she was being paranoid, but with all the business about the marriage law and with Professor Snape taking over and Harry, Ron and Hermione missing, how could anything good be happening? It was scary.

Not long after she sat down in one of the over-stuffed arm chairs by the fire, Lavender heard a noise at the door and got up to let Padma in. She walked quickly to the door and pulled it open to see the identical sister of her best friend standing there, "Hello," she smiled and stepped back to let Padma through, "Thanks for coming to hang out with me for a bit."

Padma was so incredibly glad to see that Lavender needed company. The Ravenclaw was feeling incredibly restless herself, and didn't want to be alone right now.

She had been laying on her bed while staring at the ceiling and thinking about everything to a point that it was becoming overwhelming. Padma had the tendency to overwhelm herself when she thought too much. Thank god she'd have someone to distract her from all that.

"Hey, Lavender," she smiled warmly as she walked into the commonroom. It was good to see her, having not gotten a chance to speak with her much since the year started. Padma needed a breath of fresh air, and Lavender was certainly it.

"You're welcome. And thank you for allowing me to do so. I'm glad I got to your journl entry before anyone else did," she admitted with a chuckle, "I was in my room thinking far too much. That and I wanted to snatch up the opportunity to talk to you since we haven't done much of that."

Lavender was relieved to hear that she wasn't the only one staying up at night worrying about everything. Though she usually had no problem getting to sleep, especially if she was tired, the nightmares she was having woke her quickly and then she spent the remainder of the night thinking about real things.

She walked across the common room to the armchair again and plopped down into it, but turned toward Padma, "I'm glad too. At least I know the company is good!" She smiled again, but it wasn't her normal, brilliant smile. "Yeah, things have just been weird, you know? I'm sorry I haven't spoken to you lately."

Weird was an understatement.

Padma followed Lavender's lead and plopped on the couch, curling up. She grabbed a plush pillow and held it tight, resting her chin upon it. She had silenly caught the difference in Lavender's smile. If anyone's smile could brighten up a cloudy day, it was hers, but there was just something a tad bit off about it.

"Weird...Merlin if only that was enough to describe it. Everything that's going on...it's making me edgy." Padma tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. "I don't see things getting any better, to be honest. I wish I didn't feel that way...Oh, and don't worry about it. Really," she assured her with a soft smile, "I've secluded myself from practically everyone the last week or two. I haven't spoken much to anyone, not even Parvati. In fact, I only just recently spoke to her briefly through journal." The journal entry concerning Snookums. Just thinking about it made her slightly grimace.

Lavender pulled her feet up underneath her and leaned against the arm of the chair slightly before heaving a gigantic sigh. There were no words to really describe how off things have become. Not only in her personal life, but at Hogwarts and in the Wizarding world. It was a huge mess and being couped up in a castle for months wasn't helping Lavender's agitated mood much. But then again, as she mentioned in her journal, outside didn't seem much better.

"At least we know that we aren't the only ones who feel edgy?" Lavender offered that piece of wisdom as reassurance. "But I agree with you. Things don't seem to be getting better. The cards do not look good."

The mention of Parvati made Lavender's mind zero in to the exact same concern that Padma was having. She wondered if Padma was going to want to talk about that at all. If she didn't bring it up, Lavender might. She was worried about her friend and she was sure that Padma would be too. "Parvi and I sleep in the same room and I haven't even talked to that much. I hope she isn't annoyed at me for it."

"Yeah...Sweet Merlin, I could scream," she wrinkled her nose and chuckled, pressing her palms to her temples, her fingers through her hair as she pretended to tug it. "I guess, though, we could at least try to remain positive...try..." she snorted softly. It was hard to keep positive when the world was slowly crashing down around them.

The two seemed to be thinking the same thing. Padma did want to bring it up and perhaps get more insight because Lavender knew more that was going on with Parvati than she did. The Ravenclaw was worried about Parvati nonetheless, and she just hoped she wasn't the only one thinking that there was more to Parvati's tactics to get on Draco Malfoy's nerves a bit than she let on.

There was a silent pause there, Padma was just gathering her thoughts before she brought it up. She shifted a little in her spot, eyes on Lavender as she said, "I don't imagine she is annoyed, really. I wouldn't worry too much. She'd tell you if she was, hell, I figured she'd get on my case about not speaking much by now." Padma grinned lightheatedly, but then that grin slowly faded into a slight and worried smile.

"Speaking of Vati...Don't tell her but," she bit the corner of her lip, "I'm a bit concerned. Perhaps I'm being paranoid, but do you think it's possible that she's trying to win Malfoy over? Perhaps fancy him even?" Part of her knew the answer to that. Of course it was possible, this is Parvati she was talking about!

Lavender laughed at Padma's expression, "Don't I look like I'm trying?" She wore the half-smile again and tried to look as pathetic as possible. That was her positive image these days.

It was difficult for Lavender to understand why Parvati wanted to waste time getting on Draco's nerves, but she expected the girl had her own reasons. After all, Parvati seemed to be a bit more driven lately to go against the norm. It made sense, in a very weird way. It didn't mean, however, that Lavender agreed with it. She didn't want to annoy her best friend, but Lavender was worried and because she was worried she kept commenting about the time she was spending with Draco.

During the pause, Lavender watched Padma closely for any hints as to what the girl was thinking. When she finally did speak, Padma's words didn't offer Lavender much comfort. The grin offered even less, but Lavender grinned back, too, letting it die off quickly at the end. At least she wasn't the only one who felt lousy.

"Me too!" Lavender said quickly and loud enough to make a few people at the corner tables turn around to look. "Oh, thank Merlin I'm not the only paranoid one over this Malfoy business." Lavender sighed and quieted down a bit, "I don't know what she's doing. She mentioned that she wanted to get on his nerves...but I don't see how calling him pet names in public does that. I'm sure it annoys him, but still! She's practically flaunting the fact that they are put together in this arranged marriage business. Am I crazy for thinking that?" It was a mouthful, but Lavender had been waiting for a long time to talk to someone about her friend. Who better than her friend's twin sister?

Thank Merlin. Padma had thought that she might have been the only one thinking these things, but Lavender was thinking them right along with her! It was a relief, really. Padma cleared her throat, lowering her voice a little as well, saying, "You're not crazy at all. I've been thinking the same thing! And I feel bad because she's my sister and all, but...Parvati...she's...well you know how she is. I just think that she's infatuated with the fact that it's Draco Malfoy that she got arranged with. Merlin knows how many girls here fawn over him."

Padma wrinkled her nose. She saw him as a whiny, sneaky, spoiled, little immature git. There was nothing attractive about that. "I fear that she's going to want him to like her, if she hasn't thought about it already. But Malfoy, he's...not a good guy. He's not, and I'm sorry, but he's done too much over the years for me to just toss it to the side and pretend none of it ever happened. I don't trust him, and I don't trust him around Parvati. Draco Malfoy is not someone I want her flaunting around like a trophy. Is that too harsh?" Padma frowned slightly.

Lavender understood what Padma was saying about Parvati. She definitely liked power and being with Draco would give her plenty of that. However, she disagreed with Padma about Draco Malfoy being fawned over by plenty of girls. "Girls in Slythern, perhaps, but I don't know many people outside of that House who like him. He's quite pathetic, really." Lavender frowned a bit, thinking about the very few times she came into contact with Draco Malfoy.

Lavender shook her head quickly, "No, that's not too harsh. But what could we possibly do about it? Parvati is entirely too...independent." The word 'independent' didn't seem exactly right to Lavender, but it fit. How many times had Lavender said that Draco was not a good guy and how many times did Parvati totally ignore her? It just didn't make sense to her at all. People didn't change over night. "I just don't want her to get hurt," Lavender looked down at her lap and sighed, "We all know what his family is involved in...it's been all over in the last year."

"Pathetic is right. I'm ashamed, however, to say that there are quite a few girls in my House that..." Padma paused and pinched the bridge of her nose, "that find him attractive. They'll giggle and talk about it. Maybe it's his...his..." she tried to find something that might have drawn the girls to him, but she was stuck at an impasse. "Um. Well. His hair, maybe? I don't know." Padma shrugged and laughed softly for a moment before quieting down a little; people were starting to look over again.

She thought about this. With Parvati, it was hard to get her to listen. They could talk to her and talk to her until their voices were raw and sounded like broken records, and still Parvati would do what she wanted in the end. She was a stubborn thing. "That's a big factor in why I'm worried. So many things could happen, things like her being persuaded or forced to..." Join. Become apart of their alliances. That's what Padma wanted to say, but she was certain that even though she had trailed off, Lavender knew what she was getting at. "I don't know what we could do except talk to her, but I think my opinion has fallen on deaf ears at this point."

Lavender scrunched up her nose, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to insult anyone in Ravenclaw, but that is a bit ridiculous." It was natural, Lavender guessed, for girls to giggle and be attracted to the bad boy of the school. Or at least one of them. Malfoy didn't strike Lavender as much of a bad boy. He seemed sort of..., well, pathetic and wimpy. "I don't know what it could be. I don't find him attractive at all. And his personality is gross, too." She was being a bit extreme; Lavender hardly knew Malfoy or his personality. She had heard things, though.

As soon as Padma started to trail off, Lavender's eyes widened in horror, "No," she shook her head, "Parvati isn't that dumb. She would never...she was in the DA with us!" The thought was absolutely frightening to Lavender. She put a hand to her forehead and continued to shake her head back and forth. "She's stubborn and, and,..." Lavender paused briefly to collect herself, "I don't know what to do, Padma. Perhaps we're being overprotective of her? I mean, she's a smart girl! She wouldn't stoop so low to try to actually get on Malfoy's good side...right?" Lavender wanted to believe that.

"Nah, it's okay. It is ridiculous. A lot of them are the younger girls, so I pretend that they're incredibly naive and don't know any better," Padma smiled lightheartedly with a nod. And while she, too, didn't necessarily know Malfoy, either, it didn't mean that she didn't observe. He did seem rather pathetic to her, and downright nasty, just by the way he treated other people. It was actually sort of amusing to think about. "Malfoy is a bit too much. What also has me raising my eyebrows is the way some people seem to find him intimidating. Um. Hardly intimidating, not even with Crabbe and Goyle at his side," she giggled softly.

Padma didn't want to believe it was possible, but...it was, and part of her felt terrible for thinking that. She frowned, looking a bit saddened and said, "I know, but if she was to be forced..." Padma paused and pondered. Her eyes narrowed a little and her mouth parted slightly. "What if...this is going to sound absolutely mad, but what if the reason for this more to this marriage thing than we're seeing? What if...what if this is the DEs recruiting? Gathering up people and forcing them to ally? To be..." Death Eaters.

And this is why she shouldn't lay there and think all night. "I'm going crazy, I'm sorry. We're not being overprotective, we're being logical. Malfoy cannot be trusted, and honestly? I wish I could say that she wouldn't but..." Padma shrugged slightly. "It's so frustrating, I don't want her to fall for him. Even if he did have a good side, it doesn't make up for all the rubbish he's done, and it doesn't all of a sudden make him a good person. Do you think we should talk to him, maybe?"

Lavender rolled her eyes dramatically at the mention of Crabbe and Goyle. "Those two blokes are disgustingly inappropriate. I can't even tell you how many times I've had them 'accidentally' run into me in the corridors," she even provided the air quotes as she spoke. "Believe me, it isn't fun to be groped by them. They are horrible." Even as she talked about it, she found herself laughing lightly as well. It wasn't pleasant, of course, being treated that way, but it was rather alarming and amusing that some boys still acted like that in their seventh year.

Lavender listened to Padma and watched her carefully. The Death Eaters recruiting? But it was the Ministry who was behind it. Lavender wasn't completely thick, but she still had the naive belief that the Ministry was full of mostly good people. "Oh, I don't know about that, Padma. Do you honestly think that's what is happening?" Anything was possible. "If they really wanted to make us join them, don't you think they could just put us all under spells and have us pretend to be on their side anyway?"

Lavender shrugged because she was at a loss. She didn't really want to talk to Malfoy. It was hard enough having to talk to Blaise every once in awhile. Eventually she spoke again and asked, "What do your parents think about all of this, anyway? Perhaps they can talk some sense into Parvati?"
