Lavender Isabella Brown ([info]lavvy) wrote in [info]dearlyrpg,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Lavender and Blaise
When: Monday, September 14 - before lunch.
Where: Potions classroom
What: During Potions class, Lavender and Blaise converse via the magical journals. Lavender 'confronts' him about the bet he and Draco have.
Rating: PG-13, for language.

It was only ten minutes into Double Potions and Lavender could barely take it. 'It', of course, meaning the amount of time she had to be in the same room with Blaise Zabini. Ever since Parvati informed Lavender of the bet between the Slytherin and Draco Malfoy, she had been unable to contain her anger. It wasn't just anger at Blaise, either, but also at Parvati. Perhaps the girl had just been able to get over it quicker than Lavender because she knew about it longer, but it still bothered Lavender that she seemed not as bothered by it. Was Parvati not upset about the marriage law? Lavender had a sneaking suspicion that she wasn't. Probably because the Malfoy family was prominent. Though it pained her to think that Parvati might be that shallow, Lavender did her best to rationlise that her best friend was probably just more even-tempered than her (though she also knew that wasn't true).

Lavender chanced a sideways glance at Blaise and was almost surprised that he didn't seem to be paying much attention to her. Immediately, she felt disgusted by her surprise and sighed loudly causing a few people to look over at her. Lavender usually took her magical journal everywhere with her, just in case some piece of gossip broke out. It would be horrible for her to be the last to find out and that just couldn't happen. Now, however, she was thinking about using it to write a private note to Blaise. At the moment they were writing notes, but Lavender knew she could get them from someone else later. She flipped shut her book of bound parchment and traded it for her journal.

Quickly and discreetly, she scribbled the following:

Private to Blaise Zabini: You disgust me.

As soon as it was done, she turned her head again to stare at him. She hoped that he could feel her eyes burning into his flesh.

Blaise knew that he was being watched. It wasn't surprising, as he felt that Lavender should have been looking at him in class. She was probably examining him as he'd claimed to have examined her, watching him as he took notes. Weighing his posture, his expressions... He made sure that he sat well, tall in his seat, and that his face was neutral. Slightly bored, perhaps, but still reasonably attentive to the lecture. It wasn't very informative, but he was sure that he at least looked good.

Towards the middle of the class, he chanced a glance her way to find that he wasn't mistaken. She was looking at him. However, her expression wasn't the one he had been expecting. Instead of coy - which is how he assumed girls would look if they were becoming smitten, or at the very least trying to manipulate a man into thinking they were smitten - Lavender Brown looked angry. He frowned, raising an eyebrow at her in askance... although he could hardly question her from across the room.

When Blaise finally met her gaze, Lavender only stared harder. Had she noticed slight surprise in his eyes or was she imagining that? Not that it mattered much to her. When he raised an eyebrow, Lavender narrowed her eyes more and shook her head before lifting her journal slightly and pointing to it. Hopefully he understood that to mean that he should look at his. Lavender wasn't sure if he carried his around like she did, but even so, he had to look at it sooner or later.

The frown deepened, and Blaise turned to face front again. She'd pointed to her journal... he doubted that she was telling him that he should be taking notes. Had something been written in the public journals that had discredited him, somehow? That thought irritated him. If such a post existed, it had likely come from Draco.

Blaise waited until the instructor was busy with a demonstration before reaching down to get his own private journal out of his pack. It was small, and fit easily within the pages of his textbooks. Passing his hand over it to unlock the text and look at recent entries, Blaise had another surprise. Disgusting? She couldn't be serious.

He bent over his desk to hide his reply, very quietly muttering the words to ward the entry from other readers.

Private to Lavender Brown: Did I do something recently, or did you simply decide that you really don't care for flowers?

Satisfied that Blaise understood, Lavender turned her attention back to the subject of the class for a few moments. She stole a few peripheral looks at Blaise and noticed that he was now writing in his own journal (or at least that's what she thought it was).

As she sat at her desk waiting to read what he had written, Lavender could feel the anger bubbling up inside of her. It was ridiculous, she knew. A bet of that sort between two Slytherin boys was hardly surprising. Mostly (and Lavender would probably never admit this to herself) she felt foolish for thinking for even a moment that Blaise was going to be courteous about the whole thing and let the subject of their future marriage drop for the time being. The fact that he and Draco thought it was right to turn one of the most devastating pieces of news in Lavender's young life into a game was beyond inconsiderate.

Finally, when she thought it was safe, Lavender flipped the page of her journal to see what Blaise had written.

Private to Blaise Zabini: No. I know about that horrible bet you and Draco Malfoy have going!

After writing back to him, Lavender snapped her journal shut and tried her best not to look at him as he read what she had to say. It was hard, though, as she found herself wondering if any sort of guilty reaction would cross his features.

Blaise actually seemed relieved as he read Lavender's response. He'd been replaying the last week in his mind, trying to come up with something he had done to offend her, and the only thing that had come to mind was his flirting with Padma in the library, and giving a very academic sixth year girl a small charm (and some amount of flattery) for finishing a Arithmancy assignment for him. At least she didn't have spies.

Private to Lavender Brown: I warned your friend about the bet because I didn't want to be a part of it. I find the idea repugnant, if not cruel, but Draco Malfoy has a lot of power here, these days. It isn't wise for anyone in Slytherin to cross him, or refuse him. Surely you can understand that?

When he was finished writing, he turned his head back towards her, and lifted his eyebrows, doing his best impression of innocence.

Lavender didn't know about Blaise flirting with Padma or his inability to finish his own assignments, but if she had she would hardly have cared to bring it up to him. There may have been a small part of her that wished her life could end up like something in some sort of book where it starts out that she's engaged to some horrible man who she would never pick to marry in a million years, but then he turns out to be decent and she finds that she doesn't mind him so much. However, Lavender was quite aware that the possibility of that happening was very small. Even for someone who believed in Divination, Lavender wasn't that unrealistic.

Her eyes skimmed his response when the professor wasn't looking toward her section of the room. For a moment, her face softened. Had Parvati told Lavender that Blaise warned her about the bet? No, she hadn't. She said that Malfoy had told her. Why wouldn't Parvati mention what Blaise said? Her forehead creased momentarily and she looked over at Blaise. The face he was making almost made her smile, but Lavender stopped herself.

Private to Blaise Zabini: I had no idea you warned Parvati. She only told me that Malfoy mentioned it to her during their little dinner date the other week.

I suppose I can understand that, but...I just don't understand what is in it for him to 'win' Parvati over? Especially if he mentioned it to her. Are you two not friends?

Lavender put down her quill and took a moment to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear before peeking over at Blaise.

Blaise had been pretending to look at his text book, waiting for her response. When he saw it, he considered the question. Blaise supposed he and Draco were friends, insofar as he was friends with anyone in his House. He certainly didn't mind Malfoy's company... but that didn't mean he'd trust the other boy, or even seek him out.

Blaise wasn't surprised that Draco had also told Parvati of the bet. It was a nifty little trick. His only annoyance was that Malfoy had managed to do it before he could. Ah, well. It wasn't anything he couldn't recover from, he was sure.

Private to Lavender Brown: I'm only as close to Draco as I have to be, without harming my position in my House. I have no idea what he's playing at, making bets and bragging about how quickly he is going to win a girl over, and then immediately telling her what his intentions are. I warned Parvati out of genuine concern, as it seemed if she did fall for him simply because he manipulated her to do so, she might get hurt. However, if she already knew of the plot, I'm not sure why she didn't say so. I could have refrained from worrying.

I'm surprised that Parvati didn't tell you what I said, especially if Draco had already mentioned it to her. Did she also not mention that she'd suggested the colours of the flowers, or that I apologise in that method? I rather thought that the two of you were close. Are you two not friends?

He had a point. Lavender hated that Blaise had written back to her and asked the exact same question, but it was something that Lavender was wondering about, too. She and Parvati were friends. The best of friends, actually. They had been nearly inseparable since meeting each other their first year. The two had so much in common that it only seemed natural that they be so close. However, they were both growing up. They were of age now and it often slipped Lavender's mind that they had been brought up in different ways. Though their blood status was the same, Parvati's family was more highly regarded than Lavender's. It was never something that bothered her, but perhaps it was now the reason for the current situation she found herself in. She didn't want to not trust her friend. They would just have to talk it out, just like everything else.

Private to Blaise Zabini: Were you really worried? I'm shocked, if you were.

Yes, Parvati and I are best friends and have been for the last six years. However, I cannot dream to imagine why she didn't mention these things to me. The colour of the flowers are hardly that big of a deal. I suppose she would have known me better than that, but perhaps she has a reason for thinking they would have been better than what I normally like.

As far as this whole business with the bet...what does the winner get?

Blaise frowned at the question. He wasn't sure what he would want from Draco, if he won. And if Draco had already reached Parvati, somehow, then it was a loss, already. That irritated him. Having Malfoy in pocket, even for something small, would have come in useful.

Private to Lavender Brown: Obviously, I needn't have worried, as your friend already knew. And as she didn't tell me she already knew, and indeed played it off as though she didn't know, I can only assume that she can't be trusted.

A pity. I had hoped that Gryffindor girls were as genuine as they claimed to be, as it would have been a nice change from what I'm accustomed to.

It doesn't matter what the winner gets. I'm not participating in Draco's wager. Obviously, I haven't made any attempt at seducing you. I was sincere when I apologised. I merely wanted to start on even ground, again. However, at stake was a favour. The winner could ask for anything from the loser, I believe. Not that I want anything from Malfoy, or could imagine what he'd ask of me. They were his stakes.

He stopped writing and looked up quickly, then, at the Professor, who was going over assignments.

Private to Blaise Zabini: I apologise that you were worried over nothing, but I don't know if it is fair to go as far to say that Parvati shouldn't be trusted. I've been able to trust her as long as I've known her, and to be honest, she should probably trust me less. After all, I did promise not to say anything about this bet, but I just couldn't not confront you.

Lavender paused in her writing to look over at Blaise. He really didn't seem all that dangerous to her. Then again, maybe she was fooled by his good looks. Lavender's eyes flicked forward to the front of the class and she quickly jotted down the assignment before going back to her note to Blaise.

I can't pretend to understand why Draco would want those sort of stakes. I hardly know either of you.

Thank you for...telling Parvati about it. Were you going to tell me or were you just going to rely on Parvati to do that?

Private to Lavender Brown: I thought it better if she told you about it. In truth, I was embarrassed to talk about it with you. You had no reason to want to talk to me, or to believe anything I said, after all.

I guess you still don't. I had--

Blaise stopped writing and closed his notebook, quickly. In minutes, they were going to be let out of class, and he really didn't want to be caught distracted, passing messages to another student.

Lavender had been watching her journal as Blaise wrote and when he didn't finish the sentence he started, Lavender looked up quickly thinking he was caught. She was relieved that it was just the end of class.

She started to pack up her belongings and put them into her shoulder bag.

The rest of the class started to get up out of their seats, but Lavender waited until most everyone was gone before she moved from hers. She didn't want to talk to Blaise. That had been the whole point of the journal communication, but she was also curious about what he was going to say.

She waited to see if he would come to her or if he would just leave the room without giving her another thought.

Blaise left with everyone else. He was never the last person out of a classroom, and it would have been suspicious if he'd changed his habits. He did, however, stand idly in the hallway outside of the classroom, waiting for her to exit and hoping that she wouldn't be surrounded by friends.

Lavender wasn't all that surprised when Blaise left the classroom with everyone else. Instead of fretting about it, she rolled her eyes and then got up to leave as well. The surprise came when she saw that he was waiting for her outside. "Oh," she said, startled, "I thought you had gone."

"I wanted to give you the opportunity to say anything else in person, if you had anything to say," Blaise said, keeping his tone casual. He made as though to walk her to the Great Hall, not wanting to just loiter outside of the Potions classroom.

He lowered his voice, "I don't want to keep checking my journal throughout the day, you see. It gets tedious."

Lavender followed alongside Blaise, but kept looking out of the corner of her eyes to make sure that people weren't watching them. She had become a bit paranoid over the last week. With people making bets about her and arranging her to people she barely knew, who could blame her?

"I don't know," she sighed, "It's all just so frustrating. I just wanted this year to be normal. To end my time here on a positive note. And...," she shook her head, not wanting to open up to him really, but having no choice because her emotions weren't letting her not do it, "I'm sure you're a lovely person to people in your house and you've been proved to be that way to me and my friend, but it's just so hard."

"Am I bothering you, somehow?" Blaise asked, raising his eyebrows. "Making things harder? I've been leaving you alone, last I checked, but if there's anything I've been doing that I shouldn't be..."

He paused, considering it, and then added, "Or if there's something I should do that I haven't been, I suppose, then I'd appreciate it if you let me know about it. I am not a mind-reader for anyone in any House."

Lavender stopped walking and faced him appropriately, "No, it isn't just this thing between us," she gestured between them, "It's everything. Why can't thinks be the way they were last year? Before Professor Dumbledore died." She was getting close to shaking now, but she knew she had to stop talking to Blaise this way. It just wasn't normal.

Blaise raised an eyebrow at that, but immediately covered it up with a more neutral, vaguely sympathetic face. He put a hand lightly on her shoulder, and leaned in to whisper into her ear, "I imagine it's because he died, and nobody can bring him back to life just to set things right. That's why."

It made sense to him. If Dumbledore had been the one keeping the school sane, then the removal of Dumbledore would lead to exactly this sort of chaos. The temporary removal had caused chaos their fifth year, so the permanent removal must - logically - make things worse. And from his perspective, they certainly were a lot worse.

Lavender nearly jumped out of her skin when Blaise touched her. It was one thing to be sympathetic for her, but to actually touch her, the way a friend would, when she was being completely ridiculous was a different story. Instead of jumping out of her skin, Lavender tensed slightly. She immediately felt bad for that reaction and offered him an apologetic look.

"I know things are in favour of your House now," Lavender said in a low voice, "But...doesn't it bother you at all what is happening around us?" The rumours of the new detentions had to be true. Students were being hexed and punished physically for their wrongdoing and/or their bloodline. It wasn't right.

"Of course it does," Blaise said, easily. And may well have bothered him. Certainly, he felt things were a lot simpler when Dumbledore ran the school and politics weren't dictating personal lives. He agreed with the Death Eaters' philosophy, not their methods. "Living in what is, essentially, a police state isn't my ideal, no matter which House is being favoured."

Lavender shifted her bag further up on her shoulder and started to walk again. She was quite hungry because she hadn't been eating very well lately. Most of the food she had consumed in the last twenty four hours had come from Honeydukes.

"I'm sorry," Lavender apologised, "I didn't mean to, like," she gestured with one arm, "Say all that and make things slightly weird." She quieted herself and then just stood there looking Blaise for a few moments. It was quite impressive how his features seemed to stay so neutral. "You shouldn't have to go out of your way to leave me alone or anything like that. I don't mean to be that sort of person. I'm nice."

"All right," Blaise said with a half-smile. "I won't go out of my way to leave you alone. Perhaps our paths will cross more often. I'll let you go to lunch, then," he paused a beat, before he deliberately used her familiar name, apparently deciding that it was okay. "Lavender."

Lavender actually smiled a genuinely nice smile at Blaise and nodded her head. It would be wise for both of them not to be seen together very often, but at least they didn't have to go out of the way to avoid each other. That would be nice enough, Lavender thought.

"Okay. Have a good lunch," Lavender told him as she shifted her backpack again on her shoulder. When he called her by her first name, Lavender was a bit surprised and her smile faltered but then she recovered. "Thank you."
