Blaise Zabini ([info]dark_narcissus) wrote in [info]dearlyrpg,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Blaise Zabini
What: Getting himself all paranoid.
When: The 9th, shortly after receiving the letter from Mrs. Brown. During a free period.
Where: The library.
Rating: G, 'cause...it's in the library.
Satus: Open thread, or stand-alone post. I was just bored.

It was the letter that did it. Blaise rarely received anything by owl post during the school year, and so individual letters always came as a surprise. The last one had been downright startling, to say the least, and now... this. Both times, he'd thought for a moment that it might be word from his mother, and both times he'd been disappointed to that effect. He knew that he shouldn't have been. His mother was probably too busy to write. It was one of the many reasons he'd chosen not to alert her to this marriage business. After all, it wasn't anything that she could help him with... and he wasn't entirely sure that she'd care.

No, Blaise wasn't really upset by the fact that this new letter was from somebody else's mother, and not his own. He was upset by its content. There was something that felt wrong about it, when he took it in consideration with everything else. He frowned, and started to jot his notes privately. The conclusion, when he reached it, was disturbing. A conspiracy. A conspiracy to get him to marry some girl he barely knew of, orchestrated by one of three sources. The girl's friend, the girl herself, or the government. The thought that everything could just be a coincidence didn't even cross his mind. His brain simply wasn't wired to accept coincidences.

He sighed, tapping his quill against his journal. He wasn't sure who to approach about it, if anyone, or what his next move should be. He felt as though he'd been sat down in the middle of a game of Wizard's Chess without being told whether he was playing the black side or the white. At times like this, Blaise sometimes wished he'd had confidants.

Padma figured she'd get some reading in today, having not much to do at the moment. With her bookbag hanging at her side, she sauntered into the library. Her eyes scanned around for a free table, though finding one wasn't going to be a problem for the simple fact that no one was really there, minus a few younger students.

And one Blaise Zabini.

It wasn't that she had a problem with him, the girl barely knew the boy, but he was awfully full of himself, wasn't he? Most Slytherins were. Either way, Padma didn't have much of a desire to speak to him, though his very apparent and minor state of distress did peak her curiosity. She walked past and glanced at him from the corner of her eye, only acknowledging Zabini briefly before claiming a table just across from his.

Pulling out a book, Padma politely cleared her throat and opened it, her eyes peering up at him for only a second before turning their attention on the pages. Then, in the back of her mind, she wondered if he knew Theodore Nott at all. She assumed he did because they were both in Slytherin. But she didn't want to ask about him, though she was very tempted.

Blaise didn't notice the girl at first. He was very practiced at ignoring others, particularly when he was wrapped up in what was - in his opinion - a personal crisis. It wasn't until she cleared her throat that he looked up. For a second, his expression looked startled. That was because for that second, he thought she was her twin. It took him a moment to notice that she wasn't the Gryffindor.

It didn't occur to him to think it ironic that he had just been arguing to Parvati days before that the Patil sisters weren't interchangeable.

Her presence did force him to pull himself together. The worried expression on his face went decidedly neutral, and he straightened a bit in his seat. He even smiled, somewhat. It was a forced, close-mouthed smile, but it was still a definite attempt at civility. Whether Parvati really was the mastermind behind his distress, or merely a wary ally, it would only help him to be polite to her sister. He kept his greeting very quiet, so as not to carry to the Librarian's ears. "Hello, Miss Patil."

She had barely finished reading a page when he greeted her. Padma slowly looked up and rose an eyebrow as she found it very peculiar that he'd go out of his way to do so. But he was being polite and therefore found no harm in greeting him in return.

"Zabini, hello," she spoke softly in the same attempt to keep the Librarian away. She didn't want to give the woman any reason to come over; Padma knew that if it came to that, she'd never hear the end of it. That woman had a thing for nonsense lecturing.

"I couldn't help but notice...you looked troublesome. Anything I can aid you with?" Padma asked, closing her book and sliding it off to the side. In her mind, she thought perhaps he needed help with homework. No harm in helping a person having trouble with their work, right?

"I was just letting my mind get carried away with personal nonsense," Blaise admitted. It was true, and he looked slightly embarrassed to be saying it, but there wasn't much use in lying... though in retrospect, he might have been able to get her to help him with his Potions work. That could have been useful. "But the offer is appreciated, thank you."

It occurred to him briefly that she might be in on her sister's plot... and that the next words out of her mouth might be a cryptic, well, if you want my advice, you should marry Lavender Brown... But then he reminded himself that he had spoken to her, first. And Parvati might not even be plotting. It was possible that the Patil sisters were merely ... helpful by nature.

"Hm," Padma responded simply, "I see." Carried away with personal nonsense. Well. It seemed that a great majority of the students were in that same position. The Ravenclaw only assumed that Blaise was fretting over the marriage situation. With a small smile, she said, "You're welcome, Zabini."

And that's when she did what others might consider...crazy? Out of character, maybe, bizarre...who knows. Padma grabbed her book and stood from her seat. Casually, she then walked over to his table and sat in the vacant one across from Blaise Zabini. She saw nothing wrong with that. Padma, you see, was helpful by nature. But also very curious. And up for conversation.

"Forgive me for wondering, but what personal nonsense?" She kept her eyes on him, idly drumming her fingers along the hard cover of her book. "Wouldn't happen to be about the marriage program, would it?" She was aware that he was betrothed to Lavender Brown, but Padma didn't know anything about Blaise's prior interactions with neither Lavender or Parvati.

"Not very original, I know," Blaise admitted. He'd raised an eyebrow when she moved, but in truth he was grateful that she had. It meant that he could more readily converse in whisper, if nothing else. And while she wasn't in his House, there was nothing embarrassing about being at the same table with a Ravenclaw, and certainly not one of the Patil sisters. Speaking to her might give him insight into her sister. Or something. "It seems the popular thing to do, and I hate following the trend, but I can't help finding the whole thing strange. The government's fallen fast, to even consider it."

"Well, it's sort of hard not to follow the trend when what we're worried about is going to bring a dramatic change to our future," Padma chuckled softly. "I couldn't agree with you more, though. I, myself, have concluded that our government has lost its sanity. It is all nonsensical. Though I'm sure it'd have made just a tad bit more sense if they had the decency to give us an explanation for their...sudden tactics. Still wouldn't agree with them, but the least they could do is let us know why this is forced upon us. We have our own theories and accusations, of course, but it will never entirely make sense unless we hear it from them, in my opinion."

Blaise thought about what she was saying for a few moments before answering. The why of it all seemed obvious enough to him. The political tides had turned, had been turning for years, judging from the conflicting stories run in the media. Power had been placed back into the hands of fanatics who cared more for blood purity than actual sanity. The Dark Lord had returned, or someone with enough power to take up his cause, and spark the Potter boy into an insanity and fanaticism of his own, if the papers were to be believed. Honestly, it was as if nobody read history books, anymore. Breeding programs could just be the first step. After that, they might put half-bloods and muggleborns into camps... or perhaps out of the country entirely.

Not that it would be much of a loss, if they did. Blaise was fairly certain he was safe from the new regime... unless, of course, skin color became an issue, and he rather doubted that. His mother was too well-liked among her social strata for them to turn on her or her family. He lowered his head a little towards the girl across from him, leaning forward slightly over the table. "You say that as though any government on this planet has ever made a habit of telling its public the truth, Miss Patil."

Padma smiled and she too, leaned over the table. Lowering her voice, she said, "You've misinterpreted, then. I am not that naive, Mr. Zabini." She chuckled softly and straightened herself up, crossing her legs beneath the table. "You're to marry Lavender." she stated. "I assume you've been acquainted with her and all, already. Is she what has got you worrisome right now?" Padma watched him silently after that, her expression neutral and calm.

Blaise considered her, carefully. It was possible that she and her sister were both very clever, in addition to being singularly attractive. The thought was troublesome, if somewhat enticing. Blaise had always had a difficult time deciding whether or not he liked that quality in a girl.

It certainly made them more interesting.

Of course, now that everybody was engaged, interesting hardly mattered. Yet another reason to be annoyed by the program. He nodded at her, knowing that his words would have to be carefully selected, lest she talk with her sister. "I suppose she is. It's so ... archaic, to not be able to choose for yourself. Though I guess it could have been worse. I wasn't otherwise involved, romantically."

Almost as if in a knowing manner, Padma smirked. Of course he had to choose his words wisely, it was possible that she might have decided to play the messenger role and inform Parvati of their conversation, who would then report it to Lavender. However, the Ravenclaw wasn't much for that. Besides, that wasn't what she was talking to Blaise for, Padma was simply engaging in innocent conversation.

"No? I always thought you might have been," Blaise was undeniably gorgeous, she had to admit, so could anyone really blame her for thinking he was taken? "I take you to be a private being, so I just assume that you hide your relationships quite well." Padma combed her fingers through her hair before lowering her hand and transitioned into folding her arms across her chest. "But I agree, could have been worse. Is worse, for some. Though it's not much better for those of us who aren't in that boat. Either way, it still dims our ability to actually be with someone we truly desire, don't you think?"

"I had interests... but never the opportunity to introduce myself," Blaise said, and while his tone was casual he was giving Padma an appreciative look while he spoke. "And I don't date the girls in my House. I know them too well."

He nodded, agreeing with her last statement. "It does. It seems that if they wanted us to marry by bloodline, they could at least have given us a choice of purebloods... or a chance to find matches on our own."

A slow grin spread on Padma's face. "If you don't date girls from your house," she began with a small gesture, "that leaves you with three options; Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and lastly, Ravenclaw." Padma glanced from the corner of her eye and caught the librarian giving her the 'silence or leave' look, and immediately lowered her voice.

"Your interests...well which House did they fall under? And if you say Hufflepuff, I really will be incredibly shocked." Not that she had anything against those of the Badger variety, that was hardly the case; she just always noticed that Slytherins and Hufflepuffs seemed to be equivalent to oil and water when together.

"My thoughts exactly," Padma shook her head and laughed slightly, "I just can't get over the fact that they're restricting us from our rights, you know? They're taking a huge step backwards." Padma sighed quietly and gestured helplessly, her soft gaze locked on Blaise.

"Oh, I have nothing against Hufflepuff or Gryffindor," Blaise insisted, easily enough, in a near-whisper. "But I find intelligence the most attractive quality in others. Not that it matters, anymore. Whether or not I was thinking of someone in particular... she's engaged now, as am I. It is a step backwards. It shouldn't be legal, let alone acceptable. ... But everybody seems resigned to it."

That last was said a bit sadly, with a glance at his hands. He looked back up at her, however, in order to ask, "Are you resigned, Miss Patil?"

She didn't want to push it, asking him who this girl was. Padma watched him, though, and it may have just been a glimpse, but she saw and heard his sadness. It was...well, it brought Padma to stare down at her book and frown.

But it was when he let that question leave his lips that Padma's eyes diverted up to him, more serious and fierce than just those few moments ago. "No," she said simply. "Some may be able to take this lightly, but I have not, and will not." The Ravenclaw's jaw clenched just slightly as she looked off in another direction, taking a moment to collect herself and think about this before she spoke again.

"I sent the Ministry a letter, and I may not get a response in return, but I expect them to acknowledge it and understand well and clear that I will not let my opinion go unheard." She leaned forward slightly, continuing in a soft, but stern tone, "I've been told by peers that doing so is pointless because we are," and she air quoted kids, "'nothing but a group of silly kids.' Well. I beg to differ. The Ministry forces us into adult matters, then I expect to be treated and listened to as an adult. Fail or succeed, Mr. Zabini, at least I will know that I was not one of those people who continuously bitched and moaned about the situation, yet did nothing in attempt to make change."

Padma had tendencies to be extraordinarily passionate about things when provoked. This was one of those things. She took a small breath. It felt good to get that out, part of her just hoped it didn't frighten him.

Rather than looking frightened, Blaise grinned. It was a spirited response, and he could appreciate that. Of course, he doubted that it would do any good. The letter would doubtless only be read by some hapless intern, if it was opened at all. However, her passion was attractive.

In the back of his mind, he wondered if she were that enthusiastic in other adult matters. It was certainly an interesting thought, to be saved for a more solitary occasion.

"I admire that," he told her. "That you did something. Perhaps I should write a letter, as well. If nothing else, it would show that you are not alone in your opinion."

Padma grinned, too, quite pleased with herself for retrieving a positive reaction from Blaise. She lifted up her chin a little and preened, but not so much where she appeared cocky.

"Thank you, Bla-Mr. Zabini," she caught herself quickly. "...And I definitely encourage it. It would mean a lot to me. Really. I think that if more of us did write letters to them, it would make a difference, even if just a little bit."

Padma continued to grin pleasantly at him, she was rather impressed that he would even consider standing by her on that. Of course, if she was to get inside that mind of his and see that little bit on 'other adult matters, Padma would have given him a good smack in the head!

"You can call me Blaise," the boy offered, pleased with her reaction. He was a fairly successful flirt, at times, and he liked the way a girl looked when she felt good about herself. It was ... pretty. They were still not to be trusted of course, but there was nothing wrong with appreciating that.

"Believe me. I'm happy to do it."

"I'm truly pleased to hear that, Blaise," she replied softly. After that, she bit the corner of her bottom lip as if to be thinking, and pulled her hair up into a loose bun. "Mm, I don't wish to take up the remainder of your time, I should probably leave you to continue your..." her eyes fell to his journal, "journal writing. Your journal writing." She smiled, scooted her seat back and stood up, straightening out her blouse and skirt uniform.

Blaise wet his lips, nodding, and watched her stand. He returned her smile with one of his own; appreciative, charming... although there was an underlying, practiced quality about it. He knew exactly what that smile looked like. He knew what most of his expressions looked like. "I should get back to it... although my mood has certainly been improved by your company. Thank you, Miss Patil. It was a pleasure."
