Who: Jean Grey [open to reactions?]
When: still confused on time
Where: Alkali Lake, Canada
What: The Phoenix truly rises.
Status: in progress
Rating: PG

Fitful dreamers toss and turn and so did Jean Grey. Over and over again, there were the remembered images of those she had left behind and it was a slow motion video seeing some of them. Kissing Scott. Kissing Logan. It seemed as if those memories and sensations were chasing each other around in her brain. Lip to lip, body to body, touch making her sense of a person all the more real.

Hands on her skin. In her hair. Yet they had not gone as far as they could have. It could have been so much more. Her breathing picked up, but only minutely, the mind guiding the body's reactions like a conductor to his orchestra. It may have only been imagined, but she felt the light brush of fingertips across her cheek bones, then them moving into her hair. Softly then more forcefully, another hand guiding her body closer to the one across from her. Who was it?

Scott?

Logan?

Someone else? The first shadows of fierce temptation thrown up by the fire that was consuming her. It licked up her body, mentally and literally, lighting the way in the darkness that surrounded her and had for a year. All unconscious, she began to rise, her psionic signature becoming once more easily readable and traceable. Yet there was a twist to it, something that smoothly flowed below the surface. It would show itself behind her eyes when she made contact, be apart of her movements, fluid like the motions of fire consuming its fuel.

So the Phoenix rose, as the myth said, from the ashes of a former life. Yet those ashes had been covered by water. Before Jean had been able to fly, just herself flying under the aid of her powers. Now she moved wreathed in power, surrounded by fire, the red hair that had been cut up to her chin now flowing down past her shoulders. Time had changed her. The only question was: how much?

An increase in the psionic energy in the nearby vicinity had taken up more of Sage's time than anything had in years. She'd never seen such a spike of energy like this before. Not since... but that was impossible. Jean was dead. The big babies that attempted to pass for men in this ridiculous institution called a school were still crying over her passing. Tessa had never really disliked Jean, not so much that she had wished her death very often, but her "sacrificial" death was causing more blubbering from the apparent heroes in this place than if Xavier himself had thrown himself off the Empire States Building to save them all.

Honestly, it was repulsive. Grown men acting like hormonal teenagers and she was supposed to take orders from them? Right.

She was starting to wonder if Magneto's cause was going to be worth all this nonsense.

Still, the recent spike had brought up quite a few questions for Tessa. When she had met Charles all those many years ago, she had also been made aware of the young omega level mutant who was training at the school and the mental block that Xavier had put on her to dampen her powers. Tessa had seen the drastic difference and had monitored it on her computer and since then, she had never seen such a blatant display of raw energy. Not even Charles or Eric had ever achieved such levels. It was dangerous and off the charts and Tessa knew immediately that it could only belong to one mutant. Dead or not, this was unmistakable. Besides, it wouldn't be the first time that someone who had been clearly dead defied all reason. She didn't understand why anyone would want to come back, but there it was.

"So... the Phoenix is alive," Sage mused to herself, her hands flying from computer to computer in her office as she gagded the amount of energy and where exactly it was coming from. With this sort of display, it wouldn't be long before Charles recognized the signature of the mutant as well, but Sage couldn't help but wonder why Jean was letting off so much at once. Was it a natural reaction? Or... was she trying to reach someone?

The cyberpath couldn't be sure, but she certainly knew one thing. It was only a matter of time before life started to get very interesting around this place again.

Why did all spirits come back? Unfinished business. Phoenix had unfinished business with a few people in her life, not the least of which the man who had been a significant portion of her life. Then there the friends she had lost, the other lives that she had touched and wanted to continue to touch as a teacher and an activist for mutant rights.

Even as she floated in the air, that was what she thought of. The family that she had helped to nurture and then had chosen to leave behind. Yes, it was a choice. Her life for theirs.

Except, now that choice didn't seem so important as she was still alive. Now, she breathing again. Every time that thought, the awareness of her renewed live, crossed her mind, the flames around her flickered and flared, searching for something to consume. With a slow outward breath, she dampened the light around her, pulling it in close to her skin. Making herself nearly invisible for just a moment. It lasted for the length of three breaths. Then there it was again, spiraling outward with increasing force.

It was a fireworks display like few had seen and it was beginning to draw eyes. Eyes that brought video cameras and news crews. It was going to be everywhere before too long. Something that she both did and did not want. In truth, Jean just wanted to go home, but was afraid of what she would find once she got there.

Then she was moving, speeding even through the air toward the place that she had called home for far too long.
