Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
CHARACTERS: Brenden Shacklebolt & Amelia Wood
SETTING: The Shacklebolt home on his birthday!
RATING: GP
SUMMARY: Amelia was invited to Shacklebolt festivities to celebrate the fact that he is quite old.

It was a rare occasion when Brenden took a day off from work especially when he had a case open. Not that it was a particularly dangerous one, but it made him cranky. Or at least it normally would have if he didn't have to be on his best behaviour for his parents and their demands to see their son and make sure he ate a proper meal on his birthday.

Brenden really didn't understand the big fuss over his birthday. It wasn't as though he had done anything to earn the celebrations, if anything his mother deserved some presents for the twelve hour labour. Besides twenty-seven really wasn't that big of a deal. He was just another year older and nothing else had changed, even Mia had been invited. For all he could have known it was five years ago.

Dinner had gone without incident. Kingsley and Amelia excused themselves to take care of the dishes, leaving the others at the table. Brenden waited a moment while Mr and Mrs Gentile went off into the living room and the other guests settled into conversation. He turned to Mia and raised a brow before heading out into the back yard, hoping Mia would get the clue to follow him out.

This was going to be awkward. It wasn't that Amelia didn't enjoy seeing Brenden, nor was it the fact that she didn't care for his parents, quite the opposite in fact. It was just knowing that Mrs. Shacklebolt most likely had several ulterior motives behind inviting Mia over for dinner. They had all stayed on good terms for years after the break up, but the over-zealous floo call had thrown Mia off balance. She'd tried to reason with her ex-boyfriend's mother, but like with many mothers, reason got thrown out the window. And so, Amelia had resigned to attend the birthday dinner that she was sure Brenden would rather not have her at, but regardless, she dressed in a simple sundress, stopped off at the liquor store for a gift, and then made her way to somewhere she'd be able to apparate from.

Turned out that dinner wasn't that bad, Brenden's mother was a wonderful cook, and the constant supply of wine was certainly welcome. After wiping her mouth with her napkin, Amelia noticed Brenden's look, and placed the cloth down on the table. She stood from her seat, and quietly followed him outside, wondering what he wanted.

He just wanted to get out for a bit before there was the awkwardness of cake and presents. Neither of which he was particularly fond of. To be honest, he was glad to have a familiar face at the party. Even if it made him slightly uncomfortable. "I take it there won't be any extra special birthday presents, then?" Had this been five, six years ago he imagined they would have been pressed to even show up at his parent's home.

Brenden laughed at the thought rubbing the back of his head as he continued around to the trees near the small pond on the property. He supposed it was swimmable (even though it was fish filled), but he had never actually tried.

Mia smiled as she took in the backyard that she hadn't been in in quite some time. When he looked towards the pond, her gaze followed for a moment, and she turned back to him again before speaking. "Is the typical bottle of very expensive, very strong liquor not extra special enough for you, Mr. Shacklebolt? Does the Minister's son expect something in the way of a courtesan, because I'm sure we'd have no problem finding one down in Knockturn Alley."

She grinned and looked up at him with a sincere look on her face. "Really though, Bren, happy birthday. It was great to come see you and your parents. And if you want, we can extend my gift to you, and go out on the town tonight." she let out a small breath that may have been close to a laugh.

"A courtesan from Knockturn Alley? The Minister's son would never!" He shook his head and sat down at a rock next to the water. The heat wasn't too bad here, or maybe he was just determined to ignore it. Brenden leaned back. "The Minister's son requires nothing but high class very expensive courtesans."

The gift was appreciated, although he hoped that he would have no immediate use for it. Such liquor was indeed special occasion alcohol except the special occasion was a rather horrid day at work. And rather horrible days at work involved either death or dismemberment. "Out on the town tonight? On a Sunday? The peons would just love for their hard arse superior to show up hung over." While he sounded sarcastic, Brenden knew that there was some truth in the statement. At work he was rather unapproachable and inhuman, but it was necessary with what he did.

"Ahh, so you take company with the high-class prostitutes. Ones that aren't loaded up with all those odd Muggle diseases." She nodded her head in mock understanding and sat down cross-legged on the grass next to him. She faced him for a while, then turned to watch the water, and leaned back against the rock that he was sitting on, her body nestled in between his legs.

"True," she replied, "I guess Sunday isn't the best night. But let's go do something, maybe go swimming." She laughed and gestured towards the pond in front of them. "It doesn't matter what you do in real life, on your birthday, you can do whatever you want." At least that'd always been her philosophy.

Now that was a thought. Brenden Shacklebolt and high class prostitutes. But really aside from the odd chance he opted to get out of his flat and given his rather unique style to approaching women, it probably was - well, he wasn't going to go there. Certainly not when the elusive Mia Wood was sitting just a few feet from him.

"I'm afraid aurors don't get the birthday freebie card." Now there was a loaded sentence if there ever was one. Brenden looked down and scratched his eyebrow, hoping that she would let that one slide. "But swimming, eh?" From his prior position he leaned over and tugged off both of his shoes. He didn't exactly have his trunks at hand but he did have a wand and that went a long way.

Mia just laughed at his comment, having nothing snide to say in response to it. She kept her eyes on the water for a few more moments, until she realized that Brenden was getting ready to take a swim. Grinning, she stood up and kicked off her shoes. She debated for a moment whether to transfigure some article of clothing into a swim suit, but decided against it. It was easier to just unzip her dress, slip out of it, and go swimming in her bra and knickers, and that's what she did.

After watching her dress fall to the ground and quickly tying her hair into a knot at the top of her head, Mia's eyes moved to Brenden, to see how far along in his getting ready to swim process he was. He was far enough, she decided, and without warning, she put a hand on either side of his waist, and pushed him into the cold water, then jumped in after him.

As he was being drug into the water he managed to undo the last buttons of his shirt and he nearly was able to remove it. It was barely hanging off of his right arm when he hit the fish infested water. Luckily all the fish darted right out of the way of the large disturbance.

Brenden surfaced a moment later and wiped the water from his face. His emotions were wavering between annoyed and amused at the current situation. Swimming over to the shirt, his favorite shirt, he plucked it out of the water and tossed it to the show. "You know, my mother is not going to be pleased about this," was what he settled on in an intentionally neutral 'I'm not going to tell you anything' tone.

Mia held her breath as she plunged into the cool water. As dirty as it probably was, it felt good in contrast to the outside heat. When she surfaced, she let her legs and arms keep her above the water and watched the fish swim underneath the surface.

"Not going to be pleased that we're swimming in her pond? Or not pleased that her wittle son is swimming with a bird in her underthings?" She sighed and swam a bit closer to him, "Stop worrying about consequence for at least one day a year, it'll feel good."

"Not going to be pleased about a lot of things. I reckon she still fancies you a proper lady." He smirked as he swam back over to her. Even though he was ever responsible, his edges had always been softer around her. Despite all the trouble they had created or rather he created for them, Brenden always considered her a close friend. She was one of the few people he could relax around and not worry about it. Of course it probably didn't look like that to her. Not after everything.

"As for your underthings for some reason I doubt she minds that. I know I certainly don't." As best he could in the water he lunged at her hoping to pull her under. After all she did want him to stop worrying about the consequences which probably included loosening up a bit - he was just anticipating the inevitable.

She could have avoiding him coming at her. But she didn't. it was truly a rare moment when he let loose like this, and to this day, she grabbed onto those moments, knowing how hard it was for him. She took in a deep breath, and let him pull her down into the water, her hands instinctively going to his shoulders so she could pull herself back up out of the water.

"See!" she laughed as they resurfaced, "letting go is a good thing. Be serious when you need to, and don't when you... don't." She blushed lightly when she realized that her hands we still on him, and she slid them back into the water to aid in keeping herself afloat.

"And if your mother fancies me a proper lady, then she's got something else coming. Don't proper ladies tend to the house and raise babes instead of playing Quidditch?"

Like it was an easy thing - just letting go. Still he relished in the momentary closeness and let his mind wander for just a moment to contemplate how he would have liked this to end. Birthday or not, they were friends that was it. And that was the real danger in letting go. He often forgot the boundaries.

"Ah but you're forgetting that dear old mum wasn't much of a lady at your age either." He floated backwards away from her. Brenden could barely get his head around the fact that Amelia Shacklebolt had once been Amelia Gellar outspoken activist turned policy writer, who only much later in life took on the roles of wife and mother and was never completely satisfied with slowing down.

Or maybe what he really couldn't get his head around was how like his father he was. Right down to choice in women.

She knew it wasn't easy. She knew it was one of the most difficult things he could do, which is part of what made it so hard to let him go. She'd loved him, and a big part of her still did, and she knew that she helped him open up. She hating leaving him, because it meant he'd be stuck in his own head for so long.

"Yeah, your Mum was quite the crusader." She laughed. Growing tired of treading the water, Mia swam over to the side of the pond and pulled herself up to sit on the edge, her feet and legs still dangling in. She watched him swim, wondering what was on his mind, and wishing (like she had so often in the past) that she could read it. Taking in a breath, she figured she'd try.

"What are you thinking about, Bren?"

The swimming was relaxing. It was nice to just float around and let his mind wander. Of course it never went too far, not when there were fishing waiting to nibble on his toes and parents expecting him back in the house in a respectable state in a short while. Even on his day off he was still fulfilling a role.

"Still not up to par with the legilimency?" Brenden swam toward the shore. He was never one to share his thoughts even with Mia. It was against his training and he never could separate work from real life. Brenden often wondered if his father suffered the same problem when he was younger. Although regardless Kingsley seemed to end up well enough.

"You know I was never any good at theory," she responded, "and that's all legilimency is." She shrugged. It wasn't like she hadn't tried. "It's downright frustrating." Mia was silent for a few minutes, taking the time to pull her hair from its knot and wave it out about her shoulders.

"Well," she said softly, "if you won't tell me what's on your mind, will you at least answer a question for me?" She bit onto the inside of her lip and then added, "honestly? And without beating 'round the bush?"

She didn't wait for his response. If he was going to answer it, he would, if not, then she'd live with that too.

"If you could have one thing for your birthday, anything, no matter how unrealistic it is, what would it be?"

He floated just a yard away from her as she spoke. What did he want? That was a dangerous thing to ask himself with her sitting there. In her knickers. Dripping wet. His thoughts were not exactly the most noble and there was a very good reason why he wasn't keen on getting out of the water any time soon.

Maybe it was the heat. Or slight buzz he had from the very liberal servings of wine with dinner. But really it was probably Mia. She always brought out a ... daring side in him. "Just one thing...no mater how unrealistic?" He repeated as though he were pondering his answer. Really he was just trying to keep her guard down the moment before he leaped forward and dragged her back in the water with him.

The almost moment from before wouldn't be so easily dismissed this time around.

"Yeah," she said slowly, wondering what he was planning, and starting to slide herself backwards so her legs came out of the water. "No matter how unrealistic." She smiled, "Although I imagine that there's not too much that fits in that category for a high ranking Auror. Or a mildly-famous Quidditch player, for that matter." She gave a little laugh.

She watched him, a little warily, thinking that he was going to respond with something ridiculous, along the lines of 'I want you to come back swimming,' and pull her in.

Auror. Quidditch player. For one tiny moment in his life all of those titles felt so far away. Not that he ever stopped being an auror, but perhaps with his age he was granted a small parcel of grace - the ability to leave his work at the door. Of course it was probably just hormones and the fact that it had been quite some time since he indulged. Jokes of high end courtesans aside.

He laughed. It was that same nervous laughter from years before. Now if only there could have been an out of reach book. "Well, I want you to come here." He jumped out of the water this time far enough to get both of his hands on her legs and tug her back toward the water. Brenden wanted to feel her back in his arms even in the fish-filled pond.

Her breathing deepened for a moment when she saw his expression and the look in his eyes. She knew that, she missed it more than anything else, and it made her feel like everything was okay. She could somehow get him to feel like he felt now, and everything else went away, and he was just Brenden, not an Auror, not the Minister's son, just Brenden.

She let him pull her back into the water, and she took in a quick breath, the chill of it against her already drying skin was a bit of a shock. But he was there, and warm.

"I'm here."

It was wrong. Their sorted history was five years in the past. Over but the terms on which they ended left so many things unfinished. The sexual energy certainly hadn't lessened. Not for him and if the lack of fighting told him, not for her either.

Their position, so close, still treading the water, was not particularly easy or comfortable, but he didn't care. Brenden's mind was set on one thing and one thing only. "This," his hand rose from the water and cupped her face. She had to know what was coming. It was inevitable at this moment. "This is what I want."

She may have been the one to take the initiative all those years ago, but this time it was his turn. He leaned forward stealing her lips into a gentle starting kiss.

Mia kept her legs kicking to keep herself afloat, but she rested her hands on his shoulders, warming her hands against his skin. She'd never imagined this was coming, but it wasn't at all unwanted. She didn't leave him because she didn't love him, quite the contrary, in fact. She wanted to love him more than he would let her. He never let her in, and for some reason, she kept hoping it would happen one day. That's why she stayed so long.

She closed her eyes when his hand touched her face, taking in a deep breath through her nose. He was right, she did know what was coming, and at the moment, she wanted it as much as he did.

The kiss was new, exciting, and yet familiar and safe at the same time. She didn't want to deepen it, didn't want to scare the moment away, so she just let it be soft and careful.

He did love her. In his own way, but work was always just above that love especially when he was just starting out. He had so much to prove. Not that he still didn't, but there was less pressure these days as he had a handful of junior aurors to push around. Of course that didn't mean there wasn't any regrets.

It was gentle but not hesitant. Brenden knew exactly what he wanted, but that wasn't to say that he wanted the house and the white picket fence. No, right now he wanted her. Her body and that glorious allure of just what she did to him. He didn't exactly pull away from the kiss as much as his jaw sunk just below the surface of the water.

This would never work. It couldn't, he couldn't change. Or didn't want to. She'd never be the first thing he thought of. She'd never be most important. She didn't want those thoughts there, she didn't want to want to be with him. But she did. She missed living with him, missed having someone to come home to, even if he didn't feel the same way.

but even though all that was at the back of her head, telling her she was being stupid, and impulsive, she didn't want to stop. She brought her arms to wrap around him, one around his neck, and the other sank lower to cling at the small of his back.

No, she wouldn't be the most important and really she couldn't be. Later in a moment of clarity he would realize that was just it and it was that very reason his father had been so old when he finally married. That Brenden really was just like him. Still, that didn't mean that one day when he had a less active role in the department she wouldn't be the first thing on his mind. That would just be years from now.

He kissed her again on the lips and trailed down to her jaw, struggling to keep himself afloat. But it was a lost cause and the fish, who had clearly gotten a bit daring, were nibbling at his toes. "Mia as lovely as this is perhaps a less aquatic location would help," his voice was husky. Barely a whisper, but even at that he knew that the magic would be spoiled.

She nodded and quickly let the kiss get stronger for just a moment before backing up and swimming to the edge of the pond where she'd been before. She held onto his hand as she moved, not wanting to break contact, ever. When she got to the edge of the water, she pulled herself up as before, then pulled him up, to signal that he should follow her.

Once they were both on dry land, she lay herself down and pulled him over her, then quickly brought her mouth to his again, slowly at first, adjusting to the way his weight felt over her.

Dripping wet he did his best to support his weight before continuing. There may not have been hesitation but there was restraint because if this was all he would get he wanted it to be worthwhile for both of them. It may have been his unexpected and slightly forced very unofficial birthday present but it couldn't just be about him.

Brenden wanted to crush their bodies together. To have as much of his skin feeling hers as possible, but he refrained for the moment. Shifting most of his weight to his knees which fell just outside her own and his left hand he continued to trace the curves of her face with the pads of his fingers before pressing little kisses but in between actually looking at her. His mind and all those illicit fantastic really did her no justice.

She let him kiss her as he pleased, just smiling and moving her face to let him get her cheek. She didn't close her eyes, deliberately leaving them open so she could watch him over her, the few years had left him even more handsome than she remembered.

She wanted this, just as much, if not more than he did. She'd never let go of what she did to him, and while he wasn't showing it at the moment, somewhere she knew that it didn't sit right with him either. As he kissed her, she let her hands wander, tracing the lines of his shoulders, and down to his stomach and hips, where she ran two fingers slowly over the line of his boxers.

Hands. Hands moving to such wonderful places. It was almost too good to be true. Almost. Brenden didn't want to slow down. So what that they were in his backyard, although thankfully out of immediate sight from the main house, but still within a call from the back door. Not that any of that mattered.

"Merlin Mia." His finger tips missed the feeling of her body. His body missed the feeling of her finger tips.

If not for his mother's airy saprano calling out over the grounds announcing it was time for dessert they could have easily found themselves in a compromising position. Brenden frowned pulling away. He closed his eyes and focused on his breathing hoping to calm himself down before mum paid a personal visit because they took too long.

Amelia took in a deep breath when he said her name, something about the tone of his voice just set her off. "Mmm." She murmured, reaching up with her mouth to nibble on the skin where his shoulder met his neck. She let her hand move back and forth a few times and was starting to lower it down the elastic of his boxers when she heard his mother's voice.

She did a little jump of surprise, lifting her head quickly, and then letting out a long defeated breath as she lowered it back to the grass. She frowned as he pulled away and then sat up and grabbed her dress off the grass, dried her still damp underthings with her wand and then threw it back over her head.

She wanted to say something, wanted to tell him that they'd continue later, that he'd get his birthday gift, but she couldn't bring herself to speak. She just stood up and watched him, waiting for him to start walking back, and waiting for him to say something.

Brenden stayed there a moment longer because he was really in no state to be dealing with the other guests. He started to recite legal code in his head, nothing more moment killing than policy. Letting a sigh go he moved to get his clothes and his wands. After drying himself as best as possible he redressed quickly.

He adjusted his shirt again. She would know, he thought, she would know and she would just smile. At least his thoughts had drifted into safer realms - even if on a superficial level. Finally he looked over at her allowing their eyes to meet for the first time since they had been interrupted. "Later?" It was perhaps not the most charming line he could have used, but they were so past that.

Mia looked from him to the water, then at her feet, her mind racing. Now that the moment was broken it seemed less right than it had just seconds ago, but for some reason, she still wanted it, still wanted him. She sighed and bit her lip, closing her eyes for a brief moment before looking up at him. Such a big part of her still wanted this, they just worked together.

She took a step towards him, and looked up into his eyes, bringing her hand to gently touch his cheek for a moment, just testing to see how it felt there. Her eyes grew slightly inquisitive, silently questioning him, the same expression a small child gives their parent when they're told it's time to go to bed. But it wasn't just because they had been forced to stop. It was more than that. When she realized how much she must have been conveying without words, she quickly took her hand down and looked away.

"Later," she repeated, and they started walking towards the house.
