"Hey Red! What y're tryin' to write there?"

Charlie flushed a deep red and hid the piece of parchment and quill protectively away from Smith. The other man's real name was Francis, and you only called him that if you wanted a black eye. Frank would have been the logical alternative, but there was already a Frank on the reserve and when you were dealing with dragons, you didn't want much confusion when you were calling after someone during a lock down.

"Nuthin. Don't you have something to do?" Charlie snapped back with a glare.

Smith bit into the apple he had in his hand and gave the other dragon keeper a shit-arse grin. "Nope. Thought you'd be interested in heading into town for a pint," he offered, craning his head to the parchment that was hidden behind Charlie's back.

"Yeah, just give me a sec alright? I'm...busy."

"So I see. Got some sweetheart? That a love letter?"

Charlie glared, though his ears were red with embarrassment since the letter he was writing could be construed as romantic.

"Actually, I'm writing home to my mother. And if you'll go and bugger off I can finish and you can buy me that pint."

Smith backed off when he heard that Charlie was actually writing home to Molly Weasley. Since Molly's reputation got around all of the British Isles for being the one to kill Bellatrix Lestrange, most didn't tease the Weasley siblings too much about how their mother was tight with her apron strings.

"Ah - well tell her 'lo from me, yeah? I'll be at the main house when you're ready," Smith told Charlie and bite off another large bite of the apple before tossing the rest towards a nearby field where no doubt another animal would find home for it in its stomach.

"Yeah - will do," Charlie muttered, his eyes lowered. It wasn't until he was sure that no one else was around that he finished off his letter to Lavender Brown.
He read over what he had written already, feeling stupid and foolish. He sounded like an absolute toad.

Dear Lavender:

Once again thank you for all that you did for Penelope while she was in your care. Every day Penelope grows stronger and stronger and her magical abilities have nearly fully come back. She couldn't have wanted for a better healer.

I'm not writing, though, about my friend. I was actually curious if you were interested in perhaps meeting for a drink. Or dinner. Or Lunch. However your schedule will allow. I know you must be a very busy witch.

I hope you enjoyed the crocuses in my last owl. It isn't often we see them on the reserve and wanted to share them with you.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Charlie Weasley

"She's going to think I'm nutters," Charlie muttered to the owl he attached the letter to and sighed as the creature flew off. A sudden wave of panic and the image of Lavender laughing at his note went through is mind. Charlie jerked to grab his wand, but the owl flew out of sight.

"Shite. Well, too late now."

Lavender yawned widely as she busied herself getting ready for her early shift. It was …oh approximately ridiculous-o’clock in the morning, and her shift was set to start entirely too soon. Brushing by Hyacinth on her way to the kitchen to start the kettle for a nice, caffeinated cup of tea, she gave the owl a gentle stroke. On the way back out, tea in hand, that struck her as odd. Hyacinth didn’t like her. She was not a friendly owl, and usually didn’t stand for such niceties. Lavender looked curiously, and only then did she notice that Hyacinth was not alone. There was another owl perched there with her, and she was playing nicely with it. Very odd indeed. “I’m sorry love,” Lavender said softly to the new owl, removing the note from the creature’s leg, and offering both owls a treat. Reading the note, she smiled, and gnawed on her lower lip a little.

Charlie,

Thursday evening at the Leaky will be perfect. I’ll be there. 7:30?

Until Thursday,
Lav

She took a deep breath, and smiled widely as she watched the owl fly away, disappearing from sight.
