RP: Megan's Party
Date: April 5, 2008 (About 3pm... will progress till when Megan shows up)
Characters: Neville Longbottom, Megan Jones, Mother Cat (NPC), Susan Bones, George Weasley, Kingston Johnson-Weasley... more as they arrive (add your tags & I will update the list)
Location: Dumbledore’s Home for Orphaned Children
Private/Public?: Semi-Public
Rating: ?
Warnings: ?
Summary: Neville goes to set up for the party - and then the party ensues
Complete?: Incomplete

Neville had made sure that Susan knew not to mention anything in regards to him knowing about Megan’s birthday, let alone that he was throwing her a surprise party. It was a rather sneaky way of getting the best reaction, but he was almost positive Megan would forgive him for it later.

He had arrived at the Orphanage to set up, Susan having taken Megan out at around noon for a birthday lunch and some shopping. She was supposed to keep Megan busy till around seven in the evening when the party would start. So he had plenty of time to set up decorations... and to plant Megan’s present.

~~~~{~~~~{@
Once everything was ready and Neville had gotten Megan's first present ready, it was around 5pm, so there was a couple hours before she would arrive with Susan. He was so excited to see Megan's face when she saw all of her friends there at the party, wishing her a happy birthday. She certainly deserved to have some attention thrown her way, being the sweet person that she is and always looking out for others above herself - Neville was so happy to be giving her the opportunity.
Though he was shaken from his thoughts when people started to arrive and approach him and each other.
Kingston was so excited and he bounded down the trail to the Orphanage in front of George. "Wait a second yeah? Blimey..." Kingston ran back and took George's hand and proceeded to tug him along.
"We'll get there little man, don't worry." George scooped up his son in a playful fashion and swung him around, giggles coming from his smiling face. "Now remember, don't yell 'surprise' until everyone else does, kay? Professor Longbottom and Professor Bones don't want Megan to know anything about this party... so she'll be very happy to see all of her friends when she arrives."
Kingston agreed happily just before they'd arrived and pushed open the door. He saw some other people milling around and Kingston immediately ran over to play with some of the other children.
Ginny had arrived just after George did. She stepped inside and smiled at him. "Hello, George. Did you bring Kings?"
Ginny looked around at the decorations and was impressed. She never would have been able to do as good. She had to remember to find out who did it so she could get them to decorate all her parties.
"Hey Gin." George smiled and gave his sister a one-armed hug and looked around, keeping a close eye on Kingston. "Yep, sure did... he's over playing with some of the other kids."
George spotted Neville across the room talking with one of the kids and explaining what a surprise party was. He guessed the kids hadn't been told until Megan left for the day. "They really went all out didn't they? I wonder who did all this?"
"I wonder too. They did an amazing job."
"You're right about that. I think the only reason he isn't tackling you now is that he's got the attention of the other kids." George watched Kingston play while he nudged Ginny with his elbow.
"I'll have to ask Neville who did all this." And at the same time he wondered where their friend had gotten to. "No doubt he's off getting something ready for Megan."
"And as soon as that attention is lost, I should watch my step. Don't be next to anything of value. But I won't have to worry for a while. Those kids love him."
"We can ask him later. I'm sure he and he kids had a huge hand in it. That's what makes it so special."
When George spoke of Neville getting something for Megan, a horrible idea floated into Ginny's mind. She turned to her brother and acted calm. "So what did you get for Megan? I got her some new dress robes, they'll go great with her eyes."
Harry arrived a short while after Ginny, a very excited Teddy Lupin in tow. Ted's hair was its normal bright turquoise as they headed up to the front door. Harry opened it and was almost immediately pulled inside as Ted grabbed his hand.
"Can I go play, Dad?" Teddy asked, giving Harry his best puppy dog expression. Harry grinned and nodded, sweeping a hand through the little boy's hair before giving him a little nudge in the direction where he heard children's voices.
Harry had debated on whether to go or not, but he decided in the end that it'd be good to give Teddy the opportunity to play with other children. It was the right thing to do and though he didn't know Meghan well, she obviously menat a lot to Neville and that was all the reason Harry needed to celebrate her birthday.
Ginny had just finished talking to George when she spotted Harry. She decided to go and talk to him, Ginny sure did miss him sometimes.
"Hello, luv. How are you and Teddy?"
"Hello yourself," Harry responded, a warm smile lighting up his face as Ginny approached him. "Doing well, thanks. You just missed him, he's off to get up to some sort of mischief." He shook his head and shrugged a little. "How about yourself? What have you been getting up to?"
Ginny smiled as Harry's face lit up. She sure did miss him. "Mischief is good for the soul. Kings is over with the other kids, so he can have fun with all of them. Just make sure we keep our eyes open."
"I have been working with Madame Malkin. Been tough, but helps me get to my dream. How's the Hog's Head?"
"Believe me, I know. With that one," Harry paused, gesturing in the general direction Teddy had run in, "I've always got to keep my eyes open. Precocious little blighter, he is." It was obvious by the look on his face that he didn't mind much.
"How's that going? Merlin, I haven't bought new robes in ages..." He commented, running a hand through his messy hair thoughtfully. "It's all right, I've brought in a whole slew of Muggle alcohol to freshen things up, thanks to an old school mate. Seems to be taking on well."
Ginny smiled at Harry. She was glad he found some happiness in his life, the last few months seemed to be bad. "I think it might be a general rule when there are kids around. But you would know better than I would."
"Sometimes I try to figure out why I ever thought working for her was a good idea. And other days I don't think I could live without her. If you need some new robes, just stop on by. I can get you measured and done up properly. What you're wearing is just in shambles." Ginny said with a wink to let him know she was joking.
"Muggle alcohol drinks? That's original! I'll have to stop by then. Who was the old school mate?"
"Me, know better than you? Ha! I haven't got a clue," Harry admitted with a chuckle, giving Teddy a warning look as the little boy zoomed past with several other children. His hair was a violent green, which was usually a good indicator that he was up to no good. He shook his head, pushing a hand through his hair before rubbing at the back of his neck sheepishly. "Not sure if he gets it from me or Tonks, or both."
Harry rolled his eyes at Ginny's comment, but looked down at his worn robes anyway. He usually dressed in muggle attire, finding it more comfortable and practical, but tonight he'd worn one of the only robes he owned; green that was once so dark it was nearly black. It had faded magnificantly and was currently more forest green, slowly making its way to pea green.
"Yeah, well. You know I love shopping just about as much as I love cockroach clusters," He wrinkled his nose at the comparison, shaking his head to rid himself of the sudden mental image of huge cockroaches wearing dress robes. "Yeah, you should come on over some night." He paused at her question, a little hesitant. "Marcus Flint. He's all right, surprisingly."
Ginny laughed at the color of Teddy's hair, and Harry's warning look. "I think you've got a lot more than you give yourself credit for. That look was a signature adult look right there. And the shaking of your head, dead give away you know what you're doing."
Ginny felt bad when Harry looked down at his robes. She laughed when he mentioned cockroach clusters. "You love those things? I'll have to return your christmas gift and get you those instead."
Ginny hadn't been expecting to hear that name come from Harry. Ginny turned and looked at Ginny with a stunned face. "Marcus Flint?" 'The same Marcus Flint who owns the Bacchanalia? The same Marcus Flint I danced with? That I kissed? It can't be the same one.' Ginny looked straight and shook her head in a disbelieving manor. "I don't believe it. The one and only Marcus Flint actually all right? Please do share how he's changed. This might be amusing." 'Get over it Ginny. You kissed an old school mate. No harm no foul.'
"Merlin, you mean I've actually gone and turned into an adult?" Harry responded with a feigned gasp, grinning.
"I was being sarcastic. I've never had a cockroach cluster, and don't intend on trying one," He admitted, "Just the thought of eating one turns my stomach. Euch!"
Harry cocked his head to the side at Ginny's response to Marcus' name. There was something there in her expression, she was hiding something.
"Yeah, former Slytherin and Quidditch Captain. He really helped me out with my first order, even had it delivered to his club." Harry mentioned with a shrug, then bit his lip. "He actually stopped by the Head not too long ago. I reckon some people change with age, he really seems to hate a lot of the things that most Slytherins prize." He shrugged again and then stepped away as Teddy went zooming by again, catching the little boy around the middle with one arm. The move nearly sent both of them to the ground. Harry whispered quietly into Teddy's ear, causing the little boy to pout a bit before walking, albeit quickly, out of the room. His laughter could be heard moments later from the other side of the house. "Incorrigable, that one is!"
"I know!" Ginny said with a dramatic sigh. "Just wait until we're forty, and then some young thing calls us ma'am or sir. I don't know about you, but that's about the time I'll be colouring my hair and checking the mirror for winkles every night before bed. We'll feel so old!"
"Well, that is even more stunning. I'm glad to hear he isn't such a prick anymore." 'How could I have forgotten him? He was awful. But Harry's right, people can change. Look at Greg.' "I know all about people changing Harry. And thankfully it seems to be all those Slytherins who are changing. Do you remember Gregory Goyle? I invited him to the flat party Luna and I had, and he came. We had a nice talk there. And then we had dinner another night. I can't believe how much he's changed."
Ginny watched Harry again as he spoke with Teddy quietly. "He takes after his parents. He also has a little of you in him. How could you not think that incorrigible?"
"Fortunately no one at a pub would dare call me 'sir', for fear of not being served!" Harry responded with a teasing grin. "As for wrinkles, well.." He shrugged. "I expect I won't be all that fussed."
"Of course I remember Goyle," He commented with a little frown, thrown back into his memories of that last battle at Hogwarts. He was pretty sure that when he pulled Goyle and Malfoy out of the Room of Requirements after Crabbe had been killed by his own curse, it had been the last time he'd seen the Slytherin. "That doesn't surprise me much, I don't think he really did much on his own until he was out of Malfoy's shadow."
Harry ran a hand through his hair, grinning a little. "And they say it's all genetic. Strange, since I've tried really hard to instill good values in him, not the mischievous ones! Yet he seemed to get them anyway..." He shook his head again. "Hopeless! But...he's a good lad, overall. Really spirited."
"Well it surprised me. He is so kind now, if I was introduced to him now today without knowing his name, I never would have guessed it was the same person. He's actually quite nice, and I certainly enjoy his company."
Ginny snorted with laughter before she playfully acted shocked. "Good values instead of mischievous ones? Harry, you must be kidding. How could he have not gotten them? That boy has two generations of mischievous behavior to inherit. And he has a half Weasley as a friend. And that half Weasley happens to be the son of the one and only George Weasley Master Prankster. No no, dear Harry. Teddy has a lot of mischievous things to learn."
Ginny smiled at Harry before looking straight ahead. "But on the side note, you are instilling amazing good values in him. A child without them wouldn't be as sweet as Teddy."
"But speaking of the half Weasley son of Master Prankster Weasley, I have yet to say hello to him, or to Teddy. So I'll be off saying hello to them if I can catch them. I promise I'll come round for a drink soon. So you better be prepared."
Lavender arrived at Megan’s surprise party a bit later than she had intended. She sighed loudly at herself. After all of these years, she really should have known how long it would take her to get ready… approximately forever. But she was here now, and very happy to be. Looking around she saw a few familiar faces, and familiar shocks of bright red that could only mean Weasleys were about. Spotting Neville, she smiled broadly and approached her old friend. She pulled him into a quick hug, smoothed her hair down and greeted, “Hello Neville. Everything looks fantastic. How have you been?”
Neville was still running through lists in his head even when people started to arrive, it was turning out to be a nice, small group of well-wishers and Neville couldn't be happier than to have Megan's friends show up for her birthday.
He was suddenly pulled into a hug, that made him laugh slightly in the midst of it until he was released. "Lavender! I'm glad you could make it." He smiled brightly and looked around at the job he and Mother Cat had done with the decorations. "I hope Megan likes it just as much as you do." With a wave of his hand, Neville motioned to the drinks at the table, asking if Lavender wanted one while he answered her other question. "I've been very well - lots of things at the school, and away from the school. How about you? Are they keeping you on your toes at St. Mungo's?"
He laughed. She hugged him and Neville laughed. Shrugging, Lavender smiled at him. She always had been a bit… excitable. Laughing was probably an appropriate reaction, and a positive reaction at that. “Thank you. I’m glad I was invited.”
Seeing how he looked around with a broad, almost proud looking smile on his face, she said in a clearly impressed tone, “You did all this? Wow, Neville. Seriously, next time I need to decorate, I’m calling you.” She looked around smiling, “Of course she’ll like it. Not only is it beautiful, but throwing her a surprise party was an incredibly sweet idea. You have done well.”
Lavender thanked him and accepted the offered drink. “You're a busy man. Ah yes. Every day’s an adventure. But then, I’m used to a little chaos in my life. You too, I presume, seeing as how Hogwarts is practically synonymous with chaos.” At least it had been when they were there. She hadn’t been to the castle since she left school, but some things would never change. That many kids in one place could only equal some margin of trouble. She maintained her smile and automatically smoothed her hair over her scar.
Neville wasn't sure if his laughter had put Lavender off or not, but he only had because he was happy to see her and the surprise hug was very welcome. "Of course you were invited."
He was following her gaze around the room at the decorations and shrugged a bit. "It wasn't only me, her Mum was good enough to let me throw the party here and we both put the decorations up." Though... he had to admit that he got many the compliment after the Yule Ball and all the evergreen swags and holly was a big hit - it came with having to decorate Longbottom House for every possible season. "Thanks Lavender, I never know until someone tells me. In the meantime I just second-guess myself."
Taking a sip of his own drink after giving Lavender hers, Neville nodded and felt the lists in his head make their presence known again. "Oh, it's still frought with chaos, only in a different way now that I'm on the other side of things - no longer a student. But I don't know if I could ever do what you do." He shook his head and smiled quickly, noting to himself when Lavender covered her scar. They all had them it seemed, and some were not as out in the open. "I'll probably be by St. Mungo's pretty soon. I'll let you know, maybe you can take a break from chaos to have a tea and catch up." He wasn't sure if Lavender knew of his parents but... most likely she did.
“Well, in that case, you both did a fantastic job,” Lavender conceded with a smile. “Confidence love, it’s all about confidence,” she insisted, a hint of laughter in her voice. “Any time you need a little confidence boost, don’t hesitate to send an owl my way. We can’t have you second-guessing yourself all over the place, now can we? I’ll throw so much praise your way that you’ll barely be able to stand upright with that swollen head of yours.” She made dramatic gestures with her hands, and gave him a sly smile.
“Yes, I do suppose it would be quite different trying to control the chaos rather than being the cause of it…” Lavender smiled mischievously, “And I can’t imagine it would be half as fun.” She paused for a moment, contemplating her old friend. “I think that if you really wanted to, you could do just about anything, but I know that I could never do what you do. We’d have greenhouses full of dead plants, and scores of children with their mouths hexed shut. I doubt the Board would be too pleased with either…” she trailed off, a slight smirk on her face.
“Absolutely! That’s a brilliant idea. I’d love to catch up. Give me a little notice, and I’ll make it work. I’m quite flattered that you’re finding time in your busy schedule for me, Professor,” Lavender fluttered her eyelashes and smiled broadly, still tugging at the ends of her hair, before laughing at herself. She was sort of ridiculous, but it didn’t really bother her so much.
She was confused for just a moment when Neville said that he’d be by St. Mungo’s soon, then, in an instant the light shone, and she remembered. And she felt terrible that it had ever slipped her mind. She paused just a moment and continued in a softer voice, “How are your parents doing?” Gnawing on the inside of her lower lip after the words were out of her mouth, it occurred to Lavender that he might not want to talk about it. And that he might not want to talk about it now. She had a special talent for bringing up uncomfortable subjects at happy gatherings. Super social skills Lav. She swirled her drink in her hands, giving in to the slightly awkward movement. Sweet Merlin, when had she become so awkward?
Neville laughed sheepishly when Lavender plied him with praise and promise of more if he ever needed it. "I'm surprised it's staying on now with all your compliments, all of .. just about everyone's compliments. I guess I just had to wait through all those years when I was just an awkward kid to get to this point." He was probably blushing, because that's what Neville did - he never could take a compliment without doing so.
"Causing trouble is definitely more fun, or so the students think until they get caught." Neville really didn't have to dole out detention very often, but he did when it called for it. "Well, dead plants aren't anything really that can't be fixed... now if I was a healer, I would need a good lawyer and a lot of malpractice insurance. Best I can do in that area is natural remedies - so it's a good thing we each have our own talents." Neville raised his glass in a cheers.
And then he blushed again. What was it with the title of Professor that all of his old friends liked to throw at him in such a playful manner. He didn't really get it at all - well, except in Megan's case, when they were alone and .... yeah. Neville only shook his head and laughed again. "I'll owl you and we'll catch up."
Taking a sip of his drink while Lavender asked after his parents, he smiled and nodded again. "They're doing alright - unchanged but it wasn't really expected that they would be any different over time. But they're very well taken care of, that's for sure." Neville could tell Lavender was a bit uncomfortable so she just smiled gently at her, an offhand compliment about her workplace being thrown in for good measure.
Oh, poor Neville was blushing. Lavender laughed at his comment, “That’s the spirit. Not exactly optimistic, but it’ll do. But that’s it. We’re all just making up for lost time.” She nodded knowingly, completely unable to keep from giggling.
She laughed even harder when he spoke of malpractice insurance. “I don’t know Nev, some of those plants can be pretty lethal, and you don’t get insurance. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with them.” She raised her glass along with his and gave an exuberant “Cheers to that.”
Ooo. She’d made him blush again. And then he seemed to wander off there for a minute, before giving a shake of his head and another laugh. Lavender was glad he was such a good sport about all of her teasing. Not that she had really expected anything else from Neville, unless he had changed completely over the years. “Perfect.”
She nodded as he spoke, “I’m glad to hear that they’re alright, but I’m still very sorry about their condition. I bet you get tired of hearing that. They should be well taken care of. I have the great privilege to work with some very talented healers.”
Neville’s smile was gentle, his words kind. It suddenly struck Lavender just how much she had missed him. But, she just smiled and said, “I don’t want to keep you from all of your other guests. I’m sure you’ve got lots more compliments coming to swell that head of yours. We’ll catch up though soon, yeah?”
George had just finished wrangling up Kingston when he caught something out of the corner of his eye - Susan and Megan coming up the walk toward the Orphanage.
"Go with the other kids Kings and tell them it's almost time, I have to go and speak with the Professor for a sec." Kingston was even more excited after that, running over to let the other kids know that Miss Megan was on her way and they all had to get to their hiding spots.
George found Neville off to the side and nudged him. "I think it's about that time mate, I just saw Susan walking with Megan outside."
Neville could tell something was going on, but it wasn't until George told him that the girls were on their way that he and George spread the word fairly quickly.
"Alright. Thanks George." Neville was all puffed up with pride and anticipation, wanting to see the look on Megan's face when her friends, family and all her kids surprised her with a party.
"Is it time now pro'fether?" Anna had tugged on his hand, with Stephanie at her side.
"Almost. Go to your hiding places okay... and try not to giggle." He winked at the little girls and sent them off - of course giggling did follow them.
Mother Cat had already found her spot and Neville took one more look around to make sure everyone was well hidden, just before the front door creaked open and he could hear Susan and Megan laughing and talking - most likely after a long day of shopping.
