RP: It's not the getting older that's hard
Date: April 1, 2008 (early evening)
Characters: George Weasley, Fred Weasley (NPC), Susan Bones
Location: Hogwarts
Private/Public?: Semi-Public
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Severe mopeyness, George is in one of his ‘moods’
Summary: George goes to see his transparent twin on their would be 30th birthday and Susan ends up finding him
Complete?: Incomplete

After having spent the morning with his son, and some very delicious and misshapen pancakes with 3 candles in them, George had gone to work. Kingston had drawn him a picture of what he thought his Da would look like playing quidditch and George couldn’t have been more happy, even though his heart was heavy.

When he had go into work, Ginny surprised him with a gift as well and there were several owls, though his family knew that birthdays were always more bitter than sweet - because he had shared the day for so many years, and even though it’s ten years after the fact, the lingering loss of his twin still stung on special occasions such as this.

So when all the well-wishes were said and gifts were opened and hugs were given, George went to the castle to visit his brother. It didn’t take long for George to find himself on the fourth floor, in front of the small tribute Professor Flitwick had set up so long ago - a small patch of Fred & George’s portable swamp. As soon as he was there, and smiling about the memory, he heard an echoing voice over his shoulder. "Happy birthday old man."

George turned slowly with a wry smile on his face and a raised eyebrow. "Old man? You were older than I was don’t forget."

Fred laughed and looked George over. "Yes that is true, but you weren’t snuffed out at 20 and won’t remain that way the rest of your life... er... yeah, kind of." ’So this is what I would’ve looked like at thirty?’ Fred thought to himself as he saw some differences in George’s appearance. He looked slightly tired, but that may have just been from the day itself - Fred always knew how upset George got at times like this.

Fred though, had remained cold inside and didn’t have many feelings left to have in regard to his birthday. He only knew that he had to try and cheer George up, and it was getting difficult, Fred was running out of ideas. "So, what’d you get me?"

George wasn’t really aware that he was holding his breath until after Fred had commented on how he was perpetually 20, and George was still aging. "Well, get a good look then, this is what you would’ve looked like... old man."

Not wanting to think on it any more, George was glad when Fred changed the subject to gifts. "Ah well.... I’ve managed to get up to our old tricks, and figuring that you know of a way to needle someone into lighting a match for you, I think you’ll find Filch’s office just teeming with entertainment, of the very loud and sparkling kind." A huge grin spread across George’s face when he hinted at sneaking into the caretaker’s office and wiring the whole place in interesting spots with their signature WWW fireworks.

Fred stood looking at George and realized that his brother hadn’t changed very much, just in his face. They both remained the same height and build - but there was a spark missing from George, and Fred hadn’t had that spark since he’d turned a lighter shade of pale ten years ago.

But when Fred h ad heard what George had done, he whooped and laughed, clapping his ghostly hands together that made an eerie echoing sound off the stone walls of the castle. "Brilliant mate! I can’t wait.... if you hear a loud booming after you leave, you’ll know I’ve already indulged."

He was chuckling as he started to float away, inviting George to walk with him. "So how’s everything? Your boy getting big? And what about everyone else?" Fred had many questions, being cooped up in the castle most of the time. "I got to see most of them at the Yule ball but, you know."

"No doubt I won’t make it down the front steps without hearing Filch’s cursing all the way back into Hogsmeade!" They always did have a mind for mischief; either separately or together.

"Everyone’s alright - Kingston’s getting bigger and more precocious each day, he wants to be a seeker and has Quidditch on the brain. Just like we did." Shaking his head, George strode alongside his twin floating beside him. "Ginny’s got an apprenticeship with Madame Malkin, Ron is back and all Aurorly - oh, and Percy got Kingston a puppy!" George ran a hand over his face remembering Witless. "Are you sure he hasn’t found out about you? Sounds like something you would do - only maybe to someone else other than your brother."

As far as George knew only Mum, Percy and Ginny didn’t know that Fred was a ghost - and they wanted to keep it that way until each was ready to hear. But everyone who did know agreed that Molly... couldn’t ever know. It would be too hard on her and everyone else to see her so wrought with pain again. Still, George told Fred that she was doing well too, still trying to fatten everyone up.

"I’ve been seeing someone as well." George added the mention of Susan casually at the end because he knew he’d get a ribbing and bombarded with questions if he’d mentioned her earlier.

Tuesday nights were not the easiest day for her to leave the castle. Still, Susan felt bad she hadn't had time to spend with George. It was still early though and she was making her way to the owlery at least, to send him his gift. Just because she took the long way around, meandering through the castle didn't mean that she was looking for his twin. Not at all.

She saw Fred on occasion, of course, but hadn't had reason to talk to him. The very fact that Fred never found her meant he didn't know she was... involved? Seeing? George. Yet.

Her hand in pocket, fingers grazing his gift, she wandered, slowly making her way to post the letter. Just because she managed to end up on the fourth floor meant nothing. She wasn't sure it guaranteed Fred would be there, but it meant a better chance at least.

George had said his goodbyes and Happy Birthdays (of some sort) to his twin and Fred had floated off, no doubt headed to stake out Filch's office and claim his birthday gift.

He stood there for a moment, in front of the wee patch of Portable Swamp when he'd heard footsteps behind him. When he turned to see who it was, a large smile spread across his face when he'd found it was Susan. "Hey lovely, I was just about to come and see you." It was after hours so the students weren't in the hallway - George risked a small kiss to Susan's lips and took her hand afterward. "I'm so glad to see you."

Well. She'd expected Fred and found George instead. How perfect was that? "That's twice now that you surprised me in these halls, Mr Weasley. If you do it again I may have to punish you for old time's sake."

Her mind, the ever treacherous thing, immediately gave her all sorts of images of 'punishment' that she hadn't meant, causing Susan to blush. To hide it, she rose up on her toes and returned the brief kiss.

"Happy birthday, George," she whispered, squeezing his fingers, hoping to gloss over the stupid comment she made.

George had to fight very hard with his face to keep the pleased smile from appearing when Susan mentioned 'punishment' just before her face flushed a dark pink from the comment. "I'm sorry Professor... I'm sure you can come up with a suitable punishment though, for all my wrongdoings."

The kiss was small and sweet, not wanting to get caught in the middle of the halls - it might hurt Susan's career if they were to be doing that in the open and George didn't want her to risk it.

"Thank you lovely." George's hand squeezed back when he felt the slight pressure on his fingers. "I was coming to see if you wanted to come over... or stay in? I wanted to see you." George didn't get sheepish often but when he did, his lip twitched slightly and he had to smile to cover it up.

"I'm not going where Filch never succeeded," she said, winking at him as she stepped away, leaving a proper distance between them since they were at Hogwarts.

She thought his twitching lip was in response to her teasing, because she never would have assumed that George might be sheepish. Either way, Susan tugged very lightly on his hand as she turned toward her rooms. "Would you walk with me, Mr Weasley?"

She assumed that was answer enough for his question about where she wanted to go. "I'm glad I saw you since I was on the way to the owlery."

"Good idea, best to keep a good distance until tomorrow.. that's for sure." There was a slight glow in George's eyes that had always been there when he was pulling a prank. But Susan's wink made him smile widely just before his lip twitched in response to her suggestion.

She had tugged on his hand and he followed, obviously an answer to where she wanted to go. "I will walk with you yes."

"On your way to the owlery? Hmmm. Do you still need to stop there?" George was trying hard not to tease but he shouldn't be so conceited in thinking that she was going to the owlery to send a message to him.
