RP: No More Puppies!
Date: March 10, 2008 (around 6ish)
Characters: Percy Weasley, George Weasley, Kingston Johnson-Weasley
Location: George’s House in Ottery St. Catchpole
Private/Public?: Private
Rating: PG
Warnings: Kingston & Witless being mischievous
Summary: Percy comes over for dinner with his brother and nephew
Complete?: Incomplete

George had just gotten off work and picked up Kingston from his mother’s house, hoping that Molly didn’t spoil the little champ too much - even though she always said her requisite ‘he’s too thin’, George knew it was only because she couldn’t tell that to any of her sons anymore without them rolling their eyes. “Yes Mum, I’ll feed him nice and proper tonight. We’re having lamb curry... Percy’s coming round.” he’d said as he hugged Molly goodbye and Kingston had run off ahead, chasing after his puppy.

Later that evening, the curry was simmering in the pan to a nice golden colour and George had paired it with some lemon rice. It was amazing to him how much Kingston liked anything spicy - he had a sinking suspicion it was because he wanted to show how much he could tolerate. So George always made the curry less spicy than he would’ve liked.

“Oy little man! Bring the dishes to the table yeah, and set three places.” His son rushed over to help and took the light plates “Kay Da!” Kingston set the places and rushed back to where he was colouring and Witless was licking at his cheek. Needless to say, not much colouring was going on. Everything was on the table right when he heard the door open and Percy was calling out for his nephew.

Kingston came bounding in from another area in George's house, Witless following close behind - the both of them tackling their Uncle much to his amusement.

"Oy!" Percy bellowed as Kingston launched himself into his arms and Percy swung the boy around, Witless barking madly and jumping up to catch Kingston's dangling feet.

"Good gods, mate. You must have gained a full stone since the last I saw you. I can barely lift you," Percy told his nephew, sounding a bit winded but happy to see the young boy.

"Hey boy," he further acknowledged the young pup, scritching the animal's head - as best as he could since the dog tried to lick his hand rather than be petted.

"So where's your da?" Percy asked Kingston, the scent of dinner wafting through the house.

“Uncle Percy’s here!” Kingston had heard the door opening while he was colouring and couldn’t wait to see his uncle. So as soon as Uncle Percy had come in the door, Kingston jumped on him and was swung around, making him giggle while Witless tried to bite and tug at his shoelaces.

“Did I really get that big? Grandmum always tells Da I’m too thin... but look!” Kingston showed his belly slightly and patted it proudly. “Maybe I got taller, I hope so! I want to be big!” The young man had great dreams of becoming a Quidditch star and was well on his way, but he still had ideas that bigger was better, being only four years old of course.

Uncle Percy put Kingston down and scratched behind Witless’ ears, making him stop barking so much. “Da’s in the kitchen... come on, he’s cooking curry tonight! I love the curry!” Kingston grabbed his Uncle’s hand and tugged him in the direction of the kitchen.

“You get bigger every time I see you, King-my-boy,” Percy told his nephew, grinning into the happy boy’s face. He chuckled and set Kingston down. “Grandmum tells everyone that they’re too thin. Obviously she never got a look at that belly,” Percy said, laughing as Kingston showed him his tummy which was slightly rounded with the lingering baby chubbiness which would no doubt melt from Kingston’s frame. All Weasley men tended to be gangly to a certain age before genetics really kicked in - and Kingston looked like he would take after Ron and Percy from the look of his long and slender limbs.

“Well you keep eating your veg and don’t sass your mother and I’m sure you’ll grow up as big as Uncle Ron!” Percy told his nephew, feeling a slight pang at the mention of his younger brother.

Percy followed Kingston obediently, with Witless following behind, in front and beside the two, nearly tripping Percy in the process. “Oy, mutt. You don’t want to get under these big feet,” he told the pup, nudging it under the belly with his toes to scoot the dog out of the way.

“Hey, George. Kings here tells me you’re cooking up curry tonight. Should I be afraid?” Percy asked, chuckling at his younger brother who was busy preparing food.

George was just plating dinner when he heard his son and his brother talking in the distance and Percy almost falling over.. no doubt Witless was underfoot. The younger brother huffed a laugh when Percy came into the kitchen and asked if he should be afraid of their dinner. “The only thing you need to be afraid of is me if you knock my curry!” George knew exactly what Percy meant though. “It’s fine, Kingston just likes to think he can eat spicy food with the rest of us so I usually make it milder.” he said in low tones.

The rice was on each plate like a nest for the golden lamb curry which was spooned in the well of grains. “It smells good to me so... here, give it a try yeah?” George handed his older brother a plate of curry and carried his own and Kingston’s bowl to the table. “Would you like some ale with dinner or something else?” He really didn’t give Percy a chance to answer because he saw that his son had wandered elsewhere in the house, so he whistled between his teeth, making Witless bark in the distance. “OY DINNER!” Not the best parental tactics, but it worked - he heard Kingston’s feet running to the dinner table and sat down next to where Percy would be sitting.

“Since you’re feeding both yourself and Kingston, I’ll be assured there isn’t anything in the curry to make me bleed out of my eyeballs or nose,” Percy said wryly to George, watching his brother spoon a delicious looking concoction over yellow rice.

Percy was not one for really spicy food either, and he was glad that George had made the curry milder than what he probably would have for himself. Last thing he needed was to go home to Hermione with a bad case of indigestion. “Ale would be perfect, actually. It does smell really fab, George. I guess Weasleys can’t get away with not being able to cook a decent meal,” he quipped, following George to the kitchen table.

He jumped when George whistled loudly, and then laughed when the dog answered back. “Is that the universal Kingston-Witless call?” Percy joked, sitting down when Kingston bounded in, arms and legs swinging with enthusiasm.

“So how’s the shop been George? Seems in forever since we actually had a proper chat to catch up,” Percy asked, picking up his fork and tucking into dinner. George was right in that the curry wasn’t very spicy at all - just enough to leave a slight burn on the tongue. “This is really good,” Percy told his brother, obviously impressed, then smiled as Kingston shoveled a large bite from his fork into his smaller mouth, half of the rice falling back onto the table.

“Oy, mate. The food goes in your mouth, yeah? Smaller bites,” Percy told his nephew, shaking his head. “Like father like son,” he murmured, smirking at George.

“No... not this time.” George joked about not adding any ‘special’ ingredients into the curry that might inadvertently make Percy a guinea pig for one of his new ideas. The plates were set down and George went back to the ice box to get a bottle of ale for his brother, smiling at the compliment that it smelled good at least. “Well, I think Mum would try to hold onto Kingston a little more if I wasn’t able to cook a decent meal.... you know, for the boy’s own good.”

He saw Percy flinch when he’d whistled and stopped to listen, making sure the boy and his dog were on their way and handed Percy his opened bottle of ale. And of course, the dinner was met with enthusiastic bites. “Shop’s doing really well - Ginny’s been a lifesaver, you know me and numbers don’t really get along, I more have a fancy for the ‘hands on’ bit of the business.” He took a bite of his own curry and found it flavourful and smooth with the coconut milk making the sauce like velvet.

Looking over at his son though, he wiped his mouth and laughed slightly. “Oy... makin me look bad yeah? Listen to your uncle, smaller bites, the food’s not going to run off your plate. Unless you want a bib?” Kingston shook his head frantically at his father and George turned back to Percy, chuckling softly. “I resemble that remark! D’you remember when Mum joked that she was going to get Fred and I a trough and make us eat outside with the chickens?” Shaking his head, he took another bite and knew full well that his Mother may have not been joking.

Witless was looking up at George and wagging his tail, hoping for scraps but.... curry and a dog wasn’t an experiment that George wanted to try in the slightest. So he just focused back on Percy. “How’s work going for you?” It was tentatively spoken, knowing his brother was probably swimming in parchment work and still feeling badly about Penelope, still, George wanted to know if there was anything he could do.

“Yeah, well if mum had her way we’d still all be shacked up at the Burrow, which although I enjoy visiting every so often I much prefer my own house now,” Percy said, raising his fork up with a mouthful of rice and curry to his lips. He gave his thanks for the ale, which was a good compliment to the meal as it washed away the spice of the curry nicely.

“Everything mum gives as a reason is for our own good,” he chuckled, rolling his eyes. “Even punishments were for our own good, though we certainly didn’t see it that way at the time.” Not that Percy was punished often during his childhood, and if he was it was because he was retaliating against something the twins had done to him.

“How is Ginny doing with her internship at Madam Malkins? I haven’t seen Gin in a while - actually not since Hermione and I returned from Africa. She must be rather busy,” Percy commented, licking his lips free of the curry sauce and swigging from his ale. “I’m glad to hear that business is doing well. It should be picking back up with the spring again - at least from what I remember you telling me last year. Any new products in the works?”

Percy snorted as George reprimanded his son as well for taking too many large bites and he raised an eyebrow at the memory of George and Fred eating at the dinner table. “Yeah, but she wasn’t joking mate. There were often times mum would holler ‘You two! Eat with your mouths closed - no one wants to see that’,” Percy mused. “And then there were the times you two would forget to come down for dinner altogether because of whatever you were cooking up in your rooms, and you’d get into the kitchen in the middle of the night, making mum always come down wondering if racoons got into the Burrow.”

He met George’s question with a sigh and shrug, pushing his fork through his curry. “As best as can be. There’s plenty going on at the Ministry, so it keeps me from being...distracted,” Percy explained delicately. He felt guilty still for what happened to Penelope, and Percy knew it was George was the one who found her.

“I’ve got to start watching my hours again, though. I came home late the other night and Hermione nearly reamed me with a book,” Percy laughed, his face a bit red - probably from the curry, he reasoned. “You know how she can be - very determined.”

“I think the rest of us had more of a share of ‘for your own good’ than you did brother!” George couldn’t remember a week where they weren’t punished for something they’d done, and that wasn’t even the things his parents never found out about. “But with all that, you’re right... she’d have us all tucked in there again if she could. Cooking non-stop and trying to fatten us up.”

“I’m assuming Ginny’s doing well with Madame Malkin. She hasn’t brought up any problems with me but, if she does come into the shop in a right state... I stay away from her and let her, get it out.” George chuckled and he probably should ask Ginny how everything was going, but he made it known to her that if she ever needed him, he was always right there.

“Should be good once all the snow is gone, people can go back outside again and have a bit of fun.” George ate a forkful of rice and curry, carefully thinking of which new inventions to divulge. “Well, I do have an idea for party hats ... the top where you usually have streamers of some sort explode into a burst of confetti. Would be good for birthday parties and for New Years. And then there’s the ‘nose streamers’.” George said more casually, knowing Percy would roll his eyes and debate whether he wanted to know or not.

He was still laughing, recalling how much trouble he and Fred used to be, but Gods they had fun doing it. “But really... there were people who wanted to see that... Fred and I.” George knew he really shouldn’t be teaching his son bad manners so he looked at Kingston. “But we learned our lesson and eat like semi-civilized human beings. And believe me, you don’t want your Grandmum to be telling you, best it comes from me.” George wondered if he and Fred had actually been that loud in the kitchen, so much as to be compared to rampant racoons. “We were hungry teenagers... of course we were like that.”

George watched his brother sigh and give a resigned shrug, saying that he keeps himself distracted. Obviously Percy was still feeling guilty about what had happened, but really, how could he have known? How could anyone predict what was going to happen at any given time. Things seemed calmer so long after the war, but incidents have been coming up. “You’d better be careful, Hermione can be lethal with books... even as projectiles. She knows them better than anyone else. Maybe I should just stop by the Ministry every now and then and boot you out myself!”

Kingston was having a lot of fun, having spicy curry with his Da and his Uncle, listening to all the grown up things they were talking about, and his Uncle Percy making fun of when Da was younger. Though when his Da looked at him and told him to mind his manners at the dinner table, he knew that if Grandmum were there she would’ve told him the same thing - only much louder.

He nodded and took another bite of his curry, seeing Witless wagging his tail and turning his puppy dog eyes toward his young master. Kingston picked a piece of meat with his fingers and figured the two older men were too busy talking about retrieving Uncle Percy from his duties at the Ministry to notice him, until his Da’s eyes caught on.

George looked over at his son when he didn’t hear the clattering of flatware against the plate and caught him about to feed Witless a bit of the lamb curry. “Oy!!! Wotcher! Don’t give the dog curry alright?” He sighed and moved Kingston’s arm by force to let the meat drop back onto his plate. “It’ll make Witless sick and I wouldn’t like that very much, and I doubt you’d like it any better. He only thinks it’s good for him because you’re eating it and he doesn’t know any better.”

George sat back and took a sip of his drink, only after shooting Percy a look of ‘you had to get him a puppy, didn’t you?’.

Kingston frowned and pouted slightly when his Da said his dog couldn’t have any of the curry. “But he wants some too...” He didn’t really understand why not when Witless ‘looked’ like he wanted the food, until his Da said that his dog might get sick if he had any. “Alright...”

He huffed slightly and dug into the rest of his dinner, casting a look every now and again to his puppy, still pawing at the leg of his denims where it dangled from his seat on the chair. “Da says ‘no’ Witless, you have food special for you.” Witless however, plunked his whole body down sorrowfully and looked up at his master. “Silly boy.” Kingston shook his head and went back to eating, and watching his Uncle and his Dad talk about new inventions, giggling when his Da mentioned ‘nose streamers’.
