Summary: Susan runs into Ginny on her way to Muggle London on an errand
Completion: Incomplete

Last year she had so many supplies for her different projects that she thought she'd never run out of things to do. Now, just one year later, Susan found herself using the Floo to go to Diagon Alley and through the LC for some things. She patted her pocket to make sure she had her list and stepped through the Floo. First, she needed to buy a couple of things in Diagon. Waving hello to the barkeep, she made her way out back.

Ginny was just coming into the Leaky Cauldron to have a stiff drink. Madame Malkin had sent Ginny around the bend that day, and Ginny needed something to help her relax.

As the opening to the Alley closed behind her, Ginny saw another figure coming out of the back door. "Oh sorry. I'll just step aside here and let you through, yeah?"

If she bothered to walk and look up at the same time, she wouldn't have these issues of running into people. "I'm sorry," she started to say looking up, only to recognise her. This was a pleasant surprise!

"Ginny Weasley. How have you been?"

Ginny had recognized the figure once they had spoken to her. "Susan Bones. It's been a long time. I've been doing fantastic."

Ginny was struck with a memory of Susan from the DA days. Susan and Ginny had been standing off to the side and watching Hermione and Ron about to duel. Susan had said Hermione was brave and Ginny had laughed. She told the older girl that she was brave too. 'One of the only Huffledors this school has.' Ginny remembered how Susan had given her a confused look. Ginny had laughed as she explained she meant half Hufflepuff, and half Gryffindor.

"So tell me, how is this Huffledor doing?"

Laughing, Susan grabbed her hands and squeezed them. "I'm doing great, and lately I feel much more gryffin-like. I'm teaching Muggle Studies at Hogwarts, so I have to be brave.

"What about you? What are you up to lately?" Stepping backwards, Susan leaned against the wall and moved out of the way of the wizards trying to get around them.

Ginny laughed with Susan and squeezed her hand in return. "Well I heard you got that position. But I'm telling you, you need to be a Slytherclaw to handle those kids. You need to be just as smart and sneaky them. Especially if they are anything like we used to be. They aren't are they?"

Ginny gave a small apology to the wizards as they stepped to the side. "I just started working under Madame Malkin at the robe shop. Trying to get my foot in the door to the fashion world."

"By the time they reach their fifth year, they are either interested in Muggles or dislike them," Susan said sadly. "Either way, it's hard to keep the older children's attention for very long." Which was part of her reason to go into Muggle London tonight, actually.

"You are correct, they should have all Slytherin or Ravenclaws teaching at Hogwarts, sometimes I'm just too nice to them."

One of the things Susan loved was the fact Muggles wore interesting clothes. "The wizarding world could use some updated fashions, I think that is a great idea."

In all honesty, Susan's trip could wait if Ginny wasn't busy. It wasn't very often she got out of Hogwarts and ran into a friend. "What are you doing right now, are you busy?"

"Well you need something besides a telepon to get their attention. I mean, how boring. You use a weird shape thing to talk to someone far away? Kind of like a Floo connection. What types of things are you teaching them?"

"No, I worded that wrong. Being nice on them is something they need. You can't have Snape all the time. You just need to be wicked smart and sneaky to catch them. Which every Hogwarts teacher is, or has the potential to be. And I know you can be it, Susan. The Huffledor that was in the rebel club called the DA is still in there somewhere."

"Don't let Malkin hear you say that. The first day I started working for her she said "now why would I spend time and money training you if I will simply lose my investment in Muggle clothing?" She despises the very thought of updating the fashion scene. Give me the two years required, and I'll know everything she has to teach me. And I can show her my opinion."

"Well I was just about to have a drink. I swear Tom and I will be best friends by the time two years is up. But I can always change plans if you want you to hang out. What are you here for?"

"I'm working on a list of things I think they should know, basic words and picture books for the younger children and I'm hoping for a couple trips into the city for the older students." Even after three years, Susan wasn't always sure what she wanted to teach, she needed to make a study guide for herself.

The very thought of a school full of Snapes was awful. "I would never assume that!" Susan said, indicating she did understand. "It's easier to outsmart the purebloods, they rarely see Muggle things." Wincing, Susan hoped Ginny realised she didn't mean that offensively.

"I was just passing through to Muggle London, but it's not important. I can stay here and drink with you if you like," because Susan didn't mind either way.

"You know what you should do? Allow no magic in the classroom first of all. And then maybe you can set out things for them to cook the muggle way! Something good, like brownies, or cookies or something. And for fieldtrips you can show them the muggle way to live. I wonder if McGonagall would let you take them on a weekend field trip. Then you could say no magic, and you can teach them how muggles really live. Then make them write a report on what they learned. I'll help chaperon too."

Ginny laughed as Susan spoke of outsmarting the pureblood students. “Yes, that is true. They are completely clueless in that area. Lucky for me I had a father obsessed with the muggle world. So I saw a lot of it. Doesn’t mean I knew the proper meaning of anything. But I had at least seen it before.”

“No, a friend would be better than a drink. Mind if I go with you? Maybe we can think up more ideas for those students of yours.”

How perceptive of her! "Actually, I don't allow magic in my classroom. It's one of the few things that will get students an immediate detention.

"Have you heard of camping? There are several ways to do it, but the worst is to pitch a tent and sleep outside on the ground in a sleeping bag. A tent is this nylon - like a track suit - thin hut about the size of a bathroom. You have to make your own fires and spend the night terrified some animal will eat you." Susan had fond memories of doing that when young.

"I would love the help! Maybe Neville could go as well if any male students go."

She stopped where she was, because she'd been heading toward Diagon and Ginny had been leaving. "You pick where and I'll follow you." Susan said with a grin, excited about this.

"I have heard of camping. That's what we did when we went to the Quidditch World Cup in the summer before my third year. But I was thinking maybe you could find a flat that we could use for a weekend. Give them the idea of what normal everyday muggle life is like. But the camping might be fun too."

"Make it a mandatory trip! Otherwise you’ll have all your pureblood students saying no way. And you can’t have that. Besides, I’m sure Neville would love to accompany us.” Ginny laughed at the thought of her and Neville trying to figure out the muggle thing along with the kids.

“Wait, if you were going into Muggle London, why are you at the gate for Diagon Alley?” Ginny asked confused about where Susan was going.

"If I was braver and not so worried about replacing things, I would let them stay at my flat for the weekend. I suppose that if I only take a few students at a time, that might work." Except she wasn't thilled with the idea they might ruin her things. Maybe a hotel for the weekend? Hogwarts might pay for that.

"Oh," she said, dusting imaginary dust off her shoulders, "I just came through the Floo and had to go to Gringotts first. Then I was going into Muggle London."

"I wouldn't. Those little terrors would destory things. I know. I used to be one of them." Ginny said laughing while thinking of all the things the students could do wrong. "Just find an empty muggle building you could occupy for a couple of days. Or maybe a floor, then you could seperate the classes into teams, mixing the houses. That might be fun."

"Well then, let's go to Gringotts, and then we can head into the muggle world." Ginny stepped over to the wall and tapped the correct bricks with her wand. When the path opened up she stepped through.

"So what other things do you teach them?"

Ticking off things on her fingers, Susan said, "Art. I love making them paint with water colours or chalk, things they don't usually use in the wizarding world.

"I've brought in maps and showed them roads, I've brought in a movie once, and slide shows about transportation in the Muggle world.

"There has to be things I'm missing."

Gringotts wasn't too far away so she knew they'd reach it soon.

Ginny listened to Susan talk about things that she had already taught the students in her class. "So let me ask you this, what's your goal plan? I mean, what do you want them to take away from your class?"

Ginny saw Gringotts coming closer and she reached into her purse to see how many coins she had. Ginny decided to grab a few more, and get some money changed into muggle money.

“Do you want the Purebloods learn how to survive if they are ever in a crowd of Muggles, because then I'll have to talk to Minerva about me signing up. I need those classes."

"I want them to not be afraid," she said instantly. "Fear makes people do stupid things, and we fear Muggles because we don't understand them. Secondly, I want them to be able to function in Muggle society for at least a short time. I don't even mean days, but for an hour or two."

That gave Susan a good idea. "You know how best to do that? We go into Muggle London and you point out the things that make no sense to you."

Ginny listened to Susan explain what she wanted for her class. It all made perfect sense. "Well I think to get goal one done, you have to complete goal two. Part of the reason we fear Muggles and the muggle world is because we can't function there. Here, all we have to rely on is magic. But over there, we can't use it. So it's like our security blanket had been ripped out of our hands. And that makes us fearful of what could happen. And then the stupid things start to happen."

Ginny was interested in Susan's idea, but then she chuckled. "I think it would be a far shorter list, and not to mention easier, if I point out the things I do understand. Oh! And you should jot down everything you have to explain to me. Then you can have things to teach to your class!"

Ginny laughed and she walked up the stairs to the bank. "So Susan dear, what's been going on in your life besides teaching to a bunch of insolent children?"
