RP: Happy Hour at Hog's Head
Date and Time: 18 February 2008 Evening
Characters: Harry Potter, Luna Lovegood, Charlie Weasley, Lavender Brown, ANYONE!
Private/Public: Public! Open to all!
Location: Hog's Head pub
Rating: PG 13 for now
Warnings: Drinking, who knows what else. Will update
Summary: First night of weekday happy hour, as recently advertised
Completion: InComplete

After chasing a goat out of the pub using a broomstick and a few choice words, Harry made his way through the Hog's Head pub and back to where he felt most comfortable; behind the bar. Not only was there a physical barrier between himself and the patrons, but he also had a good view of the entire pub. His back wasn't towards anyone and with his wand always stowed along the inside of his left forearm in a holder(a birthday gift from several years ago), he felt as safe as he was going to in a crowd of people.

The first weekday Happy Hour was about to commence. He'd been advertising it in a few places for the past couple weeks, and was hoping for a good turn out. Happy Hour was generally a Muggle tradition, but who said borrowing an idea was a bad thing? Business was generally booming on the weekend and even on nights when Quidditch teams practised. It was usually earlier on the weekdays, when some people were still at work or at practice(I.E the first few hours the pub was open) when there was a lull in activity. With the new specials(2-for-1 drinks until 9pm), Harry hoped that more people would come in earlier, and stay later.

Part of his reasoning was that while he did tend to be paranoid, he also enjoyed the company that the wide variety of characters dropping in provided. He liked his privacy, but being around people also kept him from being trapped within his own mind every hour of every day. It allowed him to keep some of his sanity in tact; hearing people's stories, bits and pieces of what was going on in the 'outside world' as he reffered to it(in his own head, at least). He didn't tend to step into the public's eye very often; it had even been a while since he'd attended a charity event. They'd trickled off in the past few years.

The door unlocked and the lights on, Harry went about washing and drying off a few random glasses as he waited for the first patrons to begin wandering in.

Today, Luna had been disproved.

Previously she was under the impression that no amount of coersion would let St. Mungo’s staff members relent, that no amount of begging, pleading, and offers of free treats to their pets would allow any of them to even twitch their serious faces. But today, it seemed it was her lucky day. Or perhaps she was actually recovering. But most likely it was because Healer Jones must have been driven to his very last nerves by her incessant trouble.

(Luna was rather inclined to believe that it was the first or second of the three).

Nevertheless, she was free in all senses of the word, and promptly left the hospital, after promising to take her medicine daily and come back for checkups. She was, unfortunately, still denied access to Penelope’s ward and the need for fresh air gripped her so she floo’d her way to Hogsmeade, to perhaps check out the scene of the crime. Another stroke of misfortune landed, when she found herself not landing gracefully at the Clearwater Clinic’s fireplace but in fact tumbling disoriented out of the Hog’s Head’s fireplace. She looked up quickly, dusting herself off and taking in her surroundings, before noticing a familiar tuft of dark brown hair and a glint of green eyes.

”Harry?”

Harry must have jumped about three feet when a human mass(and a lot of ash/Floo powder) came tumbling out of the fireplace. His wand was pointed at the moving mass before he could think twice, but a sigh of relief escaped his lips as he recognized the long blonde hair.

"Bloody Hell Luna, you about gave me a heart attack!" He exclaimed, running a hand through his pure black hair. He allowed a shaky laugh before sliding his wand back into its holder, casting her a stern look before it relaxed into one of relief, almost amusement. He could never hold anything against her; not Luna. "Most patrons use the door, y'know."

Luna grinned happily to see that she was indeed correct, but at his stern glance she folded her arms across her chest and pouted, indignant.

“You can’t say you didn’t enjoy it. You yourself need to learn how to make flashier entrance. Perhaps some streamers that scream ’Hooray for the Boy That Lived and Did Everything Else We Petty Fools Couldn’t!’?”

She held the look for a second, before breaking out in complete laughter and running up to throw her arms around him. “Anyways, how have you been? The last time we saw each other we barely had a chance to talk, so you must tell me everything now. But before that, where the bloody hell am I?”

Harry couldn't help but laugh at Luna's outlandish idea, coming out from behind the bar to give her a warm hug. Suddenly all his fond feelings for her rose and he felt a genuine smile stretching across his face.

"I'll make sure to get 'Hero' tattooed on my forehead next time," He assured, still grinning as they parted from the hug. "Ah, so you're here by accident. That makes me feel so much better." He rolled his eyes. "This, Luna, is the Hog's Head Pub. And you are my first customer."

After going through Penelope's personal papers for her care at the hospital, and making sure that her finances were continuing to go through as required, it was clear to Charlie he needed a drink.

A strong drink.

Penelope's condition hadn't changed, which was good. The fact that the Healers still were having issues with keeping the wound closed was bad and Charlie recalled when his father had been attacked by Voldemort's snake those many years ago. His father had pulled through. Charlie had to keep remembering that.

Walking through the door to the Hog's Head, Charlie sat himself down at the bar. The pub was rather busy because of something called "Happy Hour" scrawled in chalk above the menu. Charlie didn't know what was supposed to happen during "Happy Hour" - but Harry's patrons were certainly happy.

"Oi, Harry. I'll have a pint of lager with a firewhiskey chaser," Charlie asked of the young wizard, giving Harry a tired smile. "How are you, mate? Busy tonight, yeah?"

Seeing a familiar shock of Weasley-red hair, Harry grinned and immediately made his way over. The pub had filled up remarkably fast and he almost regretted not having another barkeep to help him out, but on the other hand he enjoyed being kept busy. It looked like the first wave was coming to an end though, the bar stools mostly taken by patrons enjoying their first(or in some cases third) drink.

"First night," He said, motioning to the sign advertising 'Happy Hour - Every Weekday until 9pm!' He beamed at Charlie, not quite meeting the man's eye, and then moved away to fill a pint, bringing it back with a healthy shot of firewhiskey. "Let me know when you'd like another, yeah? Second one is free."

Charlie took the proffered shot of firewhiskey and downed it neatly, passing the empty small glass back at Harry. "In that case I'll take that free one right now," he rasped, then took a sip of the lager. The liquid was cool and comforting, soothing the burn of the whiskey.

"I think it's a brill idea, Harry - this Happy Hour. Will bring in more customers, for sure, especially if you're giving out free second shots. You going to be able to handle the bar tonight by your onesies?" Charlie asked, then a blonde haired woman caught his eye and he realized Luna wasn't sitting too far away. She had been on his mind since he saw her at the hospital.

The full moon was coming. Even if she hadn’t had the schedule memorized, Lavender could feel it. It was the constant fluttery feeling in her stomach and the feel of too much adrenaline running through her system, throwing her senses into overdrive. Not only that, but it was soon to be the first full moon since she had returned to London. She felt nervous, twitchy, like she couldn’t possibly sit still. At work she was fine. She could easily throw herself into her cases. But she had been sent home, with strict orders against pulling any more double shifts –or series of double shifts- for a while anyway. So there she was, at home, restless, and she still had two more days to go.

Feeling like the walls were closing in on her, Lavender made a decision. She was going out. Slightly disoriented and off balance from apparating –Merlin she hated that feeling- she waited a moment to regain her bearings before stepping into the Hog’s Head. It was pleasantly bustling, the other patrons drinking and talking happily. She took it all in. It had been years since she had been here, but it was still wonderfully familiar. Excellent. This was what she needed, a crowd she could get lost in, maybe a few drinks.

Finally making her way to the bar, carefully avoiding a few of the obviously inebriated and leering men, she waved off an offer of a drink from a man smelling heavily of firewhiskey and took a seat at the bar, next to a now very familiar red head. “Why Charley Weasley, it seems you’re everywhere I go,” Lavender said with a smile on her face. Glancing up, she realized for the first time that the bartender was “Harry!” Lavender beamed, letting out an embarrassingly girlish squeak.

Luna laughed at Harry's earlier statement. "Why of course. Naturally I am always first, is that not right?"

She followed him as he approached--she wrinkled her nose in disgust--Charlie Weasley. She had not forgotten how he had blown her off at St. Mungo's (perhaps Luna's imagination was a wee bit exaggerated, but the annoyance was still present). She contemplated mildly between flat out ignoring the redhead, or telling him a matter of factly and then ignoring him, and decided on the latter. "Charlie Weasley. You were rather rude to me the other day, I think," she said simply, in a matter of fact tone, as if commenting on the weather. "But how is Penelope doing? Well, I hope."

But Luna's solemn face broke out into a grin when she saw Lavender. "Lavender! Hello love, how are you doing today? Fantastic I hope." She wanted to give Lavender a hug but ended up giving her a rather half-hearted and awkward squeeze, since the bar was in between them. It was then that Luna realized where exactly in she had landed, behind the bar, into the kitchen's fireplace, and as her eyes darted about the room to see the incoming people she had a sudden epiphany. "Hey Harry, you seem rather short-staffed by I don't know, twenty, seeing as it's only you, so why don't you hire me for the night? I'm already behind the counter as it is so you've got part of the hiring business solved, but first you really have to explain to me what this 'Happy Hour' rubbish is.. I mean, first off it doesn't actually appear to be an hour long..?"

"Er, hi Lavender," Harry greeted a bit uncertainly, raising an eyebrow at her squeal. He repressed the urge to call her 'Lav-Lav' but couldn't help grinning at the thought.

Turning slightly back to Luna, realising that she'd followed him back behind the bar, he shook his head as certain amusing images filled his head at her offer. "Oh, don't worry about it. The only other barkeep I'm use to working with is Aberforth, I sort of enjoy the havok. And anyway, Happy Hour is a Muggle thing. It rarely lasts just one hour, it's mostly a term."

Lavender cocked her head to the side curiously when Harry gave her the oddest look followed by a grin. She shrugged it off though, because she then received a much nicer greeting. “Luna-love! You look great,” Lavender smiled, leaning into the awkward hug as much as her short stature would allow. Heels could only help so much after all. Her healer instincts kicked in before she could help it, assessing Luna. Her color was much better, along with her spirits –pleasantly bubbly. Jones must have taken good care of her, and, apparently Lu wasn’t mad for being stuck with him. Lovely. “I’m here with you and liquor. Of course I’m fantastic. You’re feeling better then?”

"Yes, thank you, but Healer Jones is seriously a nightmare. Angie visited me while I was in the ward--she something really funny.. what was it? Oh yes, that every Healer's first course is 'Torturing Patients and Enjoying it'. I'm sure Healer Jones aced it.." She rolled her eyes before giggling. "But I do feel as fit as a four-tailed lizard, thank you."

She pouted a bit at Harry's denial of her offer. She really did want to help.. Well, at least most of her wanted to help. The other part of her wanted to slip chilies into Lavender and Charlie's drink, as a minor revenge. But soon her expression changed to that of wry amusement, as she raised an eyebrow at Harry's explanation. "Then why the bloody hell is it called hour? Why not just Happy Four Hours, or Five? Or plain old Happy Time? Honestly, muggles make things so complicated sometimes."

"Like I said, it's just a term. Half the terms in the world don't make much sense," Harry explained patiently, as he gently guided Luna by the shoulders out from behind the bar so he could move freely. It was rare for Aberforth to come out and barkeep, so Harry was accustomed to having the area to himself. "Besides, Happy Times is too...I dunno, dodgy sounding, I expect."

He stopped then, all the talk about Healers and what not seeping into his consciousness.

"What's all this about Healers, anyway?" He asked, bringing both women a pint of locally-made ale. "On me."

Lavender laughed at Luna’s comment, “Ah yes, I’m afraid they kick you out of the program if you don’t get excellent marks in that one.” Ah, poor Jones, the apparently nightmare healer. “I am sorry for sticking Jones on you, nightmare as he is, but from what I understand that was the only way to keep you in bed, where you belonged.”

Nodding as she received her ale, she raised her glass in salute and said, “Thank you Harry,” allowing Luna to field the question about healers as she saw fit.

As Luna came up to Charlie, her statement startled him enough to choke on his pint of lager. Coughing, he set the lager down and grabbed a napkin. covering his mouth with it.

Charlie gave Luna a concerned look. "Rude? Luna, how on earth was I rude? I really do apologize if I had been the other day - in my own defence the past week has been a bit of a blur," he told her, his eyebrows raised in worry.

"You're looking a bit better though, I'm glad to see," Charlie noted, happy to observe the pale pink of health in Luna's cheeks. His smile was a rueful one when she asked about Penelope.

"Not much has changed, I'm afraid. All they can do is...just try and keep her stabilized," Charlie sighed, then looked back down into his drink.

“A bit, I think. I only wanted to see Penelope. But perhaps my ailment had clouded my judgment. Though I really think you shouldn’t have dragged me away.” Her eyebrows raised slightly at her mouth settled itself into a small complacent pout. She didn’t appear to be offended, but perhaps a little disappointed. But her face fell when she heard that Penelope’s condition had not improved and began to fiddle slightly, nervously, with the collar of her robes.

At Harry’s question, Luna answered rather simply. “Penelope got hexed and is now at St. Mungo’s a few days ago. Pretty Dark Magic too, according to Charlie here she hasn’t gotten much better.” She seemed to have forgotten or merely ignored the fact that she herself had been rather sick a few days ago also. She swished her drink in her cup idly, before taking a hesitant sip and nodding approvingly. “This is rather good. What is it?”

"I know you wanted to see Penny, luv. Trust me - there were many of her friends wanting to see her and you were the first that showed up. I'm going to make sure Penelope knows that and as soon as she recovers, I'll make sure you're the first one that gets to see her. I did't mean at all if I had been rude or dragged you away, Luna. I sincerely apologize if I did and made you feel that way," Charlie told the young witch, his face a mask of pure honesty.

"If there's anything I can do to make it right, just let me know. You're a good friend to both my sister and my best mate - I'd hate to continue to be in the proverbial dog house," Charlie finished, giving her puppy dog eyes and a saucy smirk.

She pointed a finger at him and waggling it playfully, giggled. "That's right," she said, raising an eyebrow and breaking out into a grin. "I better be the first. Besides, Jones is making me go back to Mungo's in a week or so for a checkup."

She grinned slyly at Charlie's comment, propping both elbows up on the bar and stirring the drink slightly. "Well then, you better watch out Charlie," she said with a wink. "Any day you push me over the edge and you'll get your sister to answer to."

Charlie put his hands up in defense as Luna pointed at him, clearly showing him that she was a force to be reckoned with. But as he saw her grin, Charlie knew he wasn't completely in the dog house. "Luna-luv, may Merlin strike me down and cover my arse in boils if I don't owl you the minute I find out that Penelope wakes up," he promised, then reached out and squeezed her shoulder, glad that Healer Jones was keeping track of Luna's health.

He grinned boyishly. "Gods, last thing I need is Ginny coming after me with one of her bat-bogey hexes. Besides, I'm supposed to be popping over at some point and cooking you two dinner. Take that chance away from me and I may very well cry," he pouted, his lower lip wibbling ever so slightly.

A sweet, feminine voice reached his ears - on that was familiar, carrying a hint of authority which could turn into a sharp demand if needed. Charlie turned and smiled widely as he saw Lavender Brown sit next to him.

"Healer Brown...sorry, Lavender. Yes, it seems that way doesn't it?" Charlie responded, feeling the back of his neck warm. "I take it the hospital let you out for the evening?" he joked mildly.

Lavender couldn’t help but grin when Charlie smiled at her with that adorable smile of his. He really was rather handsome. She laughed mirthlessly at his joke, “Yeah, let.” She rolled her eyes at the memory of the hospital administrator telling her on no uncertain terms that she would leave hospital property until her shift started the next day. Shrugging it off, her expression turned thoughtful, and she said softly, “I suspect they had to kick you out. I know it’s been a rough week, how’re you holding up?

Charlie leaned in as Lavender's voice dropped into a confidential tone and he nodded his head somberly, then sighed.

"Well it was either the medi-witches or my brother and Oliver hauling my arse out, so I got a bit of shut eye and something to eat. No point in making myself ill in the process is there?" Charlie asked, then laughed a little. "You're already taking care of my best mate. Wouldn't do if I ended up on a gurney along with her."

He scratched the back of his head and shrugged. "Best as I can do. I feel bloody useless though. I mean, I go over and make sure her animals are taken care of and the like - her folks are still stuck in Hawaii but they're trying to get back as soon as possible," he told Lavender.

"How about you? I'm sure it's damn frustrating for yourself - Penelope not keeping stable," Charlie frowned.

The look of deep sadness in Charlie’s eyes broke Lavender’s heart. Once again, she had to fight off the urge to pull the dragon keeper into a hug –Merlin it looked like he needed it. She smiled when he laughed. “No way mister. You will continue eating and sleeping, and not having an excuse to live in the hospital. Healer’s orders,” she said cheekily. “I like you healthy.”

Sweeping her hair around her scar out of pure habit, she sighed softly. Lavender might as well have stayed at the hospital –she was in full comforting healer mode. Laying one hand on his arm lightly, she shook her head. “You’re not useless. I’m sure you are those animals’ hero, and Penelope’ll be happy to know that you’ve been looking in on them. Not to mention, her parents must be going crazy, not being able to get home. But they know that you are there with their daughter. That’s got to be worth something.”

Lavender let out a loud sigh, pulling back her hand and threw up both hands in an elaborate shrug. “Ah, you think you feel useless. The worst part though, is that I know that the hitwizards know something, and if they would just tell me, I might be able to help her more."

Harry had no idea what the three of them were talking about in regards to Penelope, who he hardly knew past a name. While he felt bad she'd been hexed(and, naturally, wondered who'd done it), he didn't feel it was his place to pry. So, being the excellent barkeep that he was, he set not one but two free shots of firewhiskey in front of Charlie and moved away to help a few customers that had just come in. This was serious discussion they were taking part in(flirting, apparently, aside). It wasn't the best of time for someone who didn't know the 'patient' to be jumping in to the conversation.

"Well...if it's Healer's orders then," Charlie cheeked back, then feeling his ears glow pink when Lavender told him she liked him healthy. "Healthy is what I prefer too. I'm a horrible sick person. Demanding, cranky - like a big baby without his bottle," he admitted with a grin.

Charlie looked down where Lavender had laid her hand, the tender touch nearly startling him. He had been going on by himself without any human contact, save for the hug George had given him when Penelope was first admitted.

"Thank you. I'm not any bloody hero though," he said with a half-hearted smile. If I was, Penelope wouldn't be where she is now. It was an irrational thought, but Charlie couldn't help it. He was supposed to be the one that fixed things. He made things right - but he couldn't do it this time.

Charlie did listen to Lavender and her kind words and he nodded, knowing that there was truth in what she said. "Well, I know Pen would do the same for me. Thanks for reminding me. Sometimes I need a good smack now and again or I try to take on the entire world by myself," he told the witch with a small shrug.

He frowned and nodded, sighing with Lavender. "I know. The Ministry and their fucking red tape. My Dad's always griping about it. It does more harm than good and this is one of the cases. I've got a mind to go straight to Kingsley's office and have a wee bit of a chat."

Lavender saw his ears flush and took a long draw of her ale to keep from smiling at just how adorable he was. Then it occurred to her that she was flirting. She was flirting with Charlie Weasley. Of course she was. He was handsome –she got the clear impression that he had no idea just how handsome he was- and sweet, and she liked talking to him, very much. Not to mention the fact that she had always been a bit of a flirt. This may not be the best time for that though. Still, her stomach twisted nervously with the realization. Work relationships she could do. Personal relationships had become increasingly difficult for her somewhere along the way.

Some unnamed emotion flickered across his face when he denied being a hero. Lavender wanted to search it out, to fix it –seems she had the urge to fix everything too- but decided that it was best not to pry. Instead, she decided to make herself available. Merlin Lav! That sounds a bit pathetic there, doesn’t it? No, no. She was just trying to be a good friend. “Well, whenever you need a reminder or a good smack, just let me know, and I’ll be happy to help you out.” Ah, so he denied being a hero, but admitted to having a hero-complex. Complicated man, this one.

She nodded fervently when Charlie talked about having a chat with Kingsley. “Well let me know when you do,” Lavender said, gesturing with her ale. “I’ll come along and tell those hitwizards what’s what. I did promise to give them hell…” she trailed off, taking another sip of her drink before swirling her glass on the coaster. “How is your dad, by the way?” Over the years she had heard a lot of fantastic things about Arthur Weasley –about all of the Weasleys really.

It had been too long since Ron had been up to the Hog's Head. They'd still hardly had the chance to catch up much, so he wanted to visit Harry as well. But most of all, he needed a drink, and this "Happy Hour" sounded like the perfect opportunity to take care of that.

Pulling his winter cloak about him snugly, and making sure the basic wards on his flat were secure, he found himself standing in the cold right near his destination in Hogsmeade. With hardly a moment's standing there, he pushed the door open and strolled inside.

Apparently a few familiar faces had agreed that Happy Hour sounded appealing, and Ron would spend time catching up with all of them after he had a drink in his hands. And maybe a chat with his best mate.

"Harry!", he announced, walking up to the bar, a big smile on his face.

Luna too had been earnestly eavesdropping on the conversation between Charlie and Lavender, but soon she felt rather like the third wheel. An eyebrow raised as she noticed the more-than-just-discussing-about-Penelope interactions between the two, and she smirked coyly. But aside from their own chemistry, Luna was sure that she wouldn’t be able to pick up anything else from the conversation and was happily saved by another shock of red hair.

“Ronald!” She ran over and pulled him down into a hug. Despite their height difference she could still manage to tackle him into a bear hug. “How are you? Everything well, I do hope. I was going to owl you if you wanted a drink but well, look you’re here! Oh, and your brother is here too, Charlie!”

He laughed, as Luna tackled him in a hug, and hugged her back.
"Busy. They've got me doing a lot at work these days, but I'm glad to leave that behind for at least this evening." He smiled. "And a drink sounds fantastic!"

At the mention of Charlie, he looked around to find him across the room for a moment, though he thought he remembered seeing the family hair as soon as he'd entered the bar.

"How have you been?" Ron looked at her earnestly.

"Broken hearted." She pouted for a bit before breaking out in laughter. "Because you have failed to visit me! I expect thousands of peace offerings." She folded her arms around her chest before laughing.

"But aside from that, pretty good. And you? You've been busy with work? Oh yeah, that's right, you're an Auror. Harry smiled the second he recognised the shock of Weasley-red hair that belonged to his longtime best mate. He leaned across the bar to give Ron a hug and then moved away, bringing back a pint and setting it down on the bar.

With a grin, he took a healthy drink. "So how's business and everything these days?"

"I'd reckon 'a bit' is -a bit- of an understatement, mate." Harry scolded teasingly, shrugging as he gestured down the bar's length. "Doing pretty well, I expect this happy hour thing will do all right if tonight's any indicator. How've you been doing?"
