Characters: Charlie Weasley, Lavender Brown, possibly Oliver Wood, Penelope Clearwater, various npcs, Any
Location: St. Mungo's Hospital, England
Private/Public: Public
Rating: PG to start
Warnings: Possibly language
Summary: Charlie consults Penelope's healer, Lavender Brown, on Penelope's condition (this is open for anyone to jump in)
Completion: Complete

The change of shifts between Mediwitches and Healers went on around Charlie as he sat in one of the usually uncomfortable waiting room chairs. He had arrived at St. Mungo's over twelve hours ago - as soon as he received George's owl. Penelope had been injured, that much he knew. How, or by who or what...those were things that no one could tell him just yet, and as he drank his tenth cup of coffee, Charlie began to trace the cracks in the linoleum floor.

A bursting of doors in the emergency room startled him, and the moan of a man clearly in pain as a new patient was swiftly brought in, then disappeared behind swinging doors. Doors which Penelope had disappeared through. Doors which Charlie was not able to breach, and every time he heard rushed footsteps or the call of a Healer over the intercom, his stomach clenched.

George had met Charlie, having to give a statement to a hit wizard while his hands, arms and chest were covered in Penelope's blood. Charlie nearly lost it right there when his brother practically ran up to him, telling him he had found Penelope lying on the floor to her clinic, barely coherent and a gaping wound in her stomach.

What had happened? Who had hurt his friend? Why was this happening? Was she okay...is she going to live?

Charlie had so many questions, but all the mediwitch at the emergency station could tell him was that as soon as a Healer was free, he or she would be able to come out and talk to him. Four hours passed, and no word yet. Four hours again and the sun had set. Now it had begun to rise, a pale watery burst of fire on the horizon.

Sweet bleedin' Merlin, please say she'll be alright.

"Bloody fucking hell can you people just leave me alone? Yes I am fine there's no need for you to stuff another potion bottle down my throat and bloody Merlin won't you just tell me where the hell Penelope Clearwater is?"

Her normally serene voice was tinged with harsh rudeness as a Luna stumbled through the doorway to the emergency station, dressed in patient's robes and much paler than normal. She hadn't slept a wink though she had been instructed to sleep (but honest to Merlin how do you sleep in this kind of crisis?) and her headaches caused by the anemia she was suffering was not making it any better, not to mention the general frustration she was feeling. She had been poked with needles, prodded with wands, ushered to bed, and whatever but everyone seemed to preoccupied with her health than to answer her vary simple question: Where is Penelope?

She had finally managed to dodge the barrage of nurses and found her way to the emergency room, only (to her chagrin) to be persuaded to sit and calm down. Her eyebrows knit in fury as she stormed away from the desk, but she hesitated when she caught a familiar shade of red. Was she hallucinating again? Or was it really..?

Luna approached hte man that hesitantly. "Mr. Weasley?"

Charlie looked up sharply at the sound of a soft, hesitant voice thinking it was a Healer. His eyes met Luna Lovegood's clear, worried ones and he exhaled slowly to steady his rapidly beating heart.

"Luna...sorry, luv; you startled me. I thought you were a Healer," Charlie told her, giving her a weak smile. He moved over to the seat next to the one he had been sitting on and patted the other for Luna to sit.

"Have a seat, luv. When you called me Mr. Weasley, it reminded me of my father. Please, just call me Charlie," he sighed, still smiling. His smile faded as he got a good look at her.

"Are you alright, Luna? You look rather peaky. You've seen a Healer?"

Luna smiled, relieved. The people nearby seemed to also recognize this red haired man and confirm his existence, so she was sure he was not just a figment of her imagination.

“Hey Charlie,” she said, sitting herself down on the seat next to him. “I’m glad to see you here. But wait—why are you here anyways?” Luna’s eyebrows knit together as various scenarios ran through her head. He was sitting in the emergency waiting room, after all. Maybe--? She looked him up and down, but he did not seem to be in any physical pain. She only consented to raising an eyebrow quizzically.

“Yeah I’ve been feeling rather odd lately, and I went to see Penelope last night for help but I heard she was here and that godforsaken Hitwizard stationed at her house sent me here anyways. Some buggerish thing called anemia… I swear to Merlin these nurses here have the tenacity of soldiers. They kept chasing me everywhere! All I really wanted to know was where Penelope was…”

Looking down at his hands, his fingers intertwining together, Charlie sighed heavily. Luna had been searching for Penelope and obviously, Pen wasn't there.

He swallowed thickly and looked Luna in the eyes. "Penelope was admitted to the emergency room yesterday afternoon. I've been here since, but all I know is that my brother, George, found her and brought her here. She -"

Charlie's voice wavered and he cleared his throat. "She was hit with a slashing hex to the stomach, apparently but the Healers haven't come out to tell me what's going on," he told Luna wearily, rubbing a hand over his hair.

Looking at Luna carefully, he nodded when she told him about her anemia. "Well, you do look very pale, luv. Martha - er, a dragon keeper in Romania - she suffered from anemia and had to take potion every day because of it. Make sure you listen to the Healers, yeah? Gin would go mad if something happened to you, I'm sure," Charlie told her with a small smile.

Lavender was exhausted. Her last shift was supposed to have ended hours ago, her next shift was soon to come, and she had spent entirely too long arguing with the hitwizards. All they would tell her was that Penelope had been working on a case for the ministry right before she was found, and the rest was confidential. Lavender had had it. She narrowed her eyes and snapped, “You do realize that withholding information could kill my patient?” The hitwizard, whose name she hadn’t bothered to remember, had no response to that that Lavender was interested in hearing. “If I find that you are withholding information that could help Miss Clearwater in any way, mark my words, there will be hell to pay. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to check on my patient.” With one final glare, she stood, and with robes billowing in a manner reminiscent of her old potions professor, went to do just that.

They were having trouble getting Penelope’s wound to close completely, and Lavender didn’t know why. All of her diagnostics so far had been inconclusive. That dark magic was involved was clear, but which hex had the other healer been hit with? The magical signature was heavily camouflaged by Penelope’s own, skewing the results. Lavender was frustrated and tired and the hit wizards were on her list. Her list of what, even she didn’t know, but they were there, and it was not a good place to be.

Pushing open the door to Miss Clearwater’s room, Lavender nodded to the Medi-Witch standing over the bed, checking their patient’s vitals. “Any change?”

The Medi-Witch shook her head no, when the door opened again, “Healer Brown, Mr. Weasley is still waiting for an update on Ms. Clearwater’s condition.”

Lavender nodded, I’ll be right there,” turning back to the Medi-Witch, she instructed, “I want constant surveillance on Miss Clearwater here, and I want to be called immediately if there is any change at all in her condition, especially if that wound opens again.” Waiting only long enough to see her colleague nod, Lavender left, making her way to the waiting room. Seeing a familiar head of red hair, she called softly as she neared, “Mister Weasley?”

"If only.." She gulped, forcing the lump that had formed in her throat to go down. "If only I had gotten there earlier.. I-I had been feeling sick all week, oh if only I was there earlier I could've.. I could--" She stopped, burying her head in her hands.

She looked up again, laughing hesitantly. "Well, then again there isn't really much I can do, right? I'm no good as a witch.." Her mind flashed to Simon, and how the one that could have saved him could only stop and stare. Was it happening again? Was all she could do was watch as her friend struggled on the brink of death?

This was more than she could bear, and she stared fixedly away from Charlie, all but ignoring his last comment. She only raised her head when she heard a familiar voice. "Well, speak of the devil." She laughed quietly, weakly, attempting to break the tension in the air. "She called you Mr. Weasley too. Is this a new trend or something?"

"Luna," Charlie frowned, then as the witch buried her head into her hands, he couldn't help but put his arm around her shoulders and lean over. "You aren't feeling anything that I haven't been telling myself, luv. But...Pen's strong...she'll pull through."

Charlie was trying to reassure Luna, but really he was trying to do for himself as well. Penelope was strong - he had to believe that.

As Luna began to berate herself, Charlie sighed and squeezed the young witch's shoulders. "Don't think like that - it won't help Penelope, now will it?"

Before Charlie could say anything further, he heard a familiar voice which made him turn his head. Looking up he saw Lavender Brown - the pretty Healer he had met at Ginny and Luna's housewarming party.

"Lavender. Or...Healer Brown, sorry. Please, it's Charlie," he said, standing up his heart beating fast as surely this was about Penelope. "Is Penny ok?"

“Charlie,” she conceded. “You can call me Lavender, it’s fine.” Gesturing for him to sit, she wished she had better news for the handsome keeper. Alright Lav, deep breath, and in her soothing healer voice, explained, “I’m afraid that Miss Clearwater is in critical condition. We induced a coma, so she’s not in any pain, but we are having some trouble closing her wound. Dark magic was involved, and whoever cast it, hid it well. We can’t do any more comprehensive diagnostics until she’s stronger. However, she is still losing blood, and the potions aren’t enough. We’ll be giving her transfusions, as needed.”

Worry lines were clearly etched on Charlie’s face, and Lavender felt terrible that she had to deliver the news. Felt terrible that she didn’t even know what was wrong with Penelope, how the other healer had gotten in such a state. “It’s not all bad though. Her heartbeat is strong, and there doesn’t seem to be any neurological damage. She’s very lucky that George found her when he did.” Another brief pause, “I assure you, we are doing all we can for her. Do you have any questions?”

Charlie sat back down and turned to Lavender as she sat down beside him. He could tell it wasn't good news, just from the way she was looking at him - immense sympathy in her eyes. Charlie tried to mentally brace himself...but as Lavender began to tell him just exactly what was happening to his best mate, his insides coiled tighter and tighter.

Hearing the words: coma, blood loss, dark magic, and transfusions make Charlie begin to feel an overwhelming sense of panic and he wanted to burst between those emergency room doors to wherever they were keeping Penelope. He had to see her.

Covering his face with his hand, Charlie forced himself to breathe. He had to be strong. Had to be strong for Penelope.

"Gods...Pen," he whispered, shaking his head. This can't be happening. She was fine the last time he saw her...maybe a bit depressed and emotionally lost, but...

"Can...can I see her?" Charlie managed to choke out as his sinuses began to sting from emotion.

Luna had been biting on her nails as Lavender delivered the news. "Lav..." she muttered. The worst had come. "Dark magic?" She looked at Charlie in fear. When Lavender mentioned blood transfusions, completely forgetting the fact that she herself was lacking in blood Luna jumped up. "If you need extra blood I'm sure you can use mine."

Luna's eyes hit the floor as she solemnly regarded the situation. Charlie was right. Her pacing out here wasn't going to do anything. She looked back up, a fearful hope in her eyes. "Do you reckon we can visit her?"

The pained look on his face crushed Lavender. She reached out and gave his shoulder a gentle squeeze before reminding herself to keep a professional distance, and pulled her hand back. He was obviously incredibly worried about Miss Clearwater, and she couldn’t blame him. “Charlie,” Lavender said softly, gently. “I know that this is scary, but I will do everything I can for her.”

She chewed on the inside of her lower lip when he asked to see Miss Clearwater. “Yes, of course, but before we go, I feel like I should warn you about what you will see. She’s unconscious and very pale.” Glancing at the clock, she added, “she should be in the middle of a transfusion right now, and her abdomen is bandaged. I’ll have to ask you to be very careful not to touch her abdomen, or the arm with the IV in it.”

Looking around Charlie, Lavender realized that the pretty blonde woman beside him was Luna. A very pale, ill looking Luna. “Luna! That’s very sweet, and we do encourage friends and family to donate, but not in your condition. You look done in. Have you seen a healer? I’m going to have Healer Jones look in on you, and I won’t take no for an answer” Healing friends was anxious business, and it was best left to a neutral third party. To someone not so emotionally involved. “I’m sorry Lu, I can’t let you back, hospital rules, at least not until she regains consciousness.”

Calling the other healer over, Lavender led Charlie back through the swinging doors, and to Penelope’s room. “Ready?” she asked, waiting for him to respond before swinging the door open.

Nodding, swallowing heavily Charlie managed to regain his composure as Lavender reassured him that she would do her best for Penelope, and he managed to reach up and pat her hand before she pulled away.

"Thank you, Lavender. I'm glad that Pen's being taken care of by someone...someone I kinda know. It's silly, but it makes me feel a bit better," he said hoarsely, then cleared his throat.

Standing up, Charlie listened to Lavender warn him about how Penelope may look. Gods, he had forgotten to consider it. He expected Penelope to look as she always did - vibrant and beautiful and full of life.

Charlie put his hand on Luna's shoulder and gave it a quick squeeze. "I'll come back, yeah? I let you know how she's doing, Luna. I promise," he told the pale blonde witch, and he was grateful that Lavender was having a Healer look at Luna. Hearing Luna talk about herself not being good for anything made him worried. He mentally reminded himself to owl or stop in on Ginny and have a talk with his sister about her flatmate when he could.

"Alright...I think I'm...ready," Charlie told Lavender, wanting to grab onto her for strength but she was so small in comparison to him. What he really wanted was Bill...or mum. They'd know what do to.

Following Lavender to the room where Penelope was being kept, Charlie walked slowly inside. His breath hitched in his throat and his eyes began to sting.

Penelope was lying on a bed, looking so frail. He'd never seen her this way.

"She looks so...small," he whispered, not really meaning to speak. With hesitation he walked to Penelope's bedside and looked down.

This isn't happening...not Penelope...

Charlie looked at Lavender, pleading at her with his eyes.

"Can...is it okay if I?..." he motioned to want to take Penelope's hand.

Lavender smiled wanly at him when he thanked her. “It’s not silly, Charlie. I’m glad to give comfort where I can.”

From the look on Charlie’s face when she explained what he would see, it was obvious that it hadn’t occurred to him before. He looked like he desperately needed a hug, but that would clearly cross professional boundaries. “Is there anyone you would like for us to call?” she asked, watching him searchingly.

In Miss Clearwater’s room, she heard his breath hitch. It was always hard to see someone you love in such a condition. A wave of her wand brought a chair to rest beside the bed so Charlie could sit, and she nodded to the Medi-Witch who had been watching Miss Clearwater that it was okay to take a break. Lavender had everything under control. Checking to make sure that it wasn’t the arm that had the IV that Charlie wanted to hold, she nodded. “Go right ahead. You can talk to her too, if you like. It is widely believed that even people in comas will respond to the sound of their loved ones voices.” Checking to make sure that the stitches were holding for the time being, and the alarms were set to ring if there were any changes in her patient’s vitals, Lavender offered, “Would you like a few minutes alone with her?”

Chewing and worrying his lip with his teeth, Lavender's question shook Charlie out of his thoughts and he turned to look down at her. He realized then that she looked very tired - worn out. Like she had been here just as long as he had, and he considered that probably she had been at the hospital even longer.

"Erm...well her folks are in Hawaii - 2nd Honeymoon," he said to Lavender as if in a daze. He remembered Penelope telling him that and she thought it was so romantic that they had done so, especially around Valentine's Day. Charlie remembered he agreed. "She doesn't have any siblings. Really...myself and Oliver are the only other ones she h-has," Charlie admitted, then coughed as he felt himself wanting to lose it right there.

Clearing his throat for the millionth time, he shook his head. "I'm sorry - this is just...really overwhelming. Last time Pen and I saw each other was only about a week ago and she was fine. Do you even know...did they say what happened? I can't get anyone to tell me," Charlie asked, his eyes moist.

"I should probably owl Oliver Wood - that's Penny's other close friend. He'll want to know. He needs to see her - can you make that possible? I know the hospital probably has restrictions..." Charlie asked, his voice filled with worry. Penny had been there for Oliver when he had been hurt. For Oliver not to be able to see her - it would probably cause a lot of drama.

Charlie smiled in thanks as Lavender provided him with a chair to sit on and he watched as the Healer attended to the various incantations, medical nonsense and the like that Penny was hooked up to. When he was assured he could touch his mate, Charlie gingerly took Penelope's small, slender hand in his own.

He was assured by the warmth in her fingers, yet her hand felt so small in his palm.

"Pen...I'm here. It's Charlie, luv. You're going to be alright, yeah?" he managed to say, then bit his lip because he expected her to open her eyes and smile. But she didn't.

Hearing Lavender's question all he could do was nod several times hastily, hoping Lavender would in fact leave him for a few moments before she saw him completely lose it.

“No need to apologize, I know that this is a lot to take in,” Lavender assured, thankful for her years of dealing with patient’s families. It was hard every time –she was a bit of a bleeding heart- but her compassion usually won out over her uncertainty about what to say. She shook her head and sighed, brushing a stray curl out of her face, “No. They won’t tell me either, and I’ve been fighting with the hitwizards about it. All they would tell me was that she had been working on a case for the Ministry, and George found her soon after the Ministry official left.”

Nodding when he bounced back to Oliver. His thoughts were a bit jumbled, for a perfectly understandable reason. She could at least follow what he was talking about. “Don’t worry about it at all,” Lavender said with a wave of her hand, “I’ll see to it that an owl gets sent to Oliver Wood, if one hasn’t been sent already. You and he are the only non-family members allowed to see her, at least until she regains consciousness and can consent to others.” She spoke with confidence, until she regains consciousness. Lavender just hoped that she would be able to follow through with that sentiment.

Patting his shoulder again as he spoke to his friend, Lavender felt that tug of her heartstrings again. He nodded emphatically in response to her question, and she figured that he didn’t want to break down in front of her or anyone else really. “Absolutely. I’ll be back in a few minutes to check on Miss Clearwater.” and you ,she added silently to herself. Lavender hoped that Oliver got here soon, Charlie needed someone to lean on.

Oliver was very late in getting to St. Mungo's. He was watching the Arrows game so as to come up with better strategies for Puddlemere's game against them next week. As soon as he got the notice about Penelope, he apparated to the hospital.

Wood rushed through the hospital to the waiting room looking for Charlie.

He was speaking with a mediwitch over Penelope's condition and the medication they would be dosing her with next, when he heard a familiar voice out in the waiting room demanding to see Penelope.

"Excuse me for a moment," Charlie murmured to the mediwitch, then exited Penelope's room and out into the waiting room. He saw Oliver there, and Charlie called Oliver's name softly.

"I'm glad you could make it, mate," he said to his friend in relief.

Rubbing a hand over his face, Charlie felt a bit of the tension in his shoulders ease as Oliver gave a comforting pat with a hand.

"It's alright. I've been here since yesterday afternoon and it was only just this bloody morning that I could get any answers," Charlie sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose with finger and thumb. "Even then...there isn't much they've been able to tell me."

Leading Oliver out of the way of a few Healers rushing through the doors where the hallway to Penelope's room was, Charlie stood close to his friend, his voice low.

"Pen was doing something for the Ministry but they don't know what. George found her all bloodied up to hell with a gash in her stomach," he told Oliver tightly. "It was dark magic, they're saying. The wound keeps opening up - and she keeps losing blood."

His voice shook as he finished. "She keeps slipping, and they've been able to stabilize her each time - but they don't know just how long she'll keep doing this."

Wood listened intently as Charlie spoke, unintentionally chewing on his bottom lip in worry.

"Dark magic?" He repeated the words a second time. "Why the hell did they having her do it? They have all sorts of people trained to deal with that stuff."

He grabbed a hold of Charlie's shoulder. "She's strong. She'll pull through." What else were you supposed to say in this situation? He had no idea, so he smiled softly.

Charlie's words fluttered through his mind again. "Wait. You've been here since yesterday afternoon? You really should go home and get some sleep. I can keep watch for awhile."

Suddenly angry, Charlie smashed his fist against the wall next to him, shaking his head. "I wish I fucking knew. Why was she on some bloody Ministry case involving dark magic, Ollie? Shite," he scathed. Charlie had half a mind to march down to the Ministry and kick down Kingsley's door to get some answers.

Looking down at Oliver's hand on his shoulder, Charlie exhaled and nodded. "I know she's strong. Fuck, I was there when she knocked her head after Martin was killed. I know how strong Pen can be but..." Charlie shook his head. "When you see her, you'll know."

He turned and put his back against the wall, his head meeting the flatness behind it and he closed his eyes, suddenly very tired. "Yeah. George was here earlier - brought me some food. I just...I can't leave her. What if something happens and I'm not here?"

When Charlie punched the wall, Oliver didn't flinch, but would've swore he could feel the other man's anger pulsing through his own body. "Have you tried asking your brother? Maybe he could ask around?"

"That was a nasty knock she took," Wood nodded, recalling the event. "She's in good hands here. The best, I'd imagine. At least that's what they always tell me."

"I can't do that. Ron's just starting out as an Auror. If he's found to be a leak within the Ministry on an ongoing case, it could cost him his job and he's worked too bloody hard for that for me to cock it up," Charlie sighed. "No, I'll have to go right to the top on this one if no one tells me just what the fuck she was doing on a case that involved dark magic," he added, giving Oliver a heated glare.

"It's a good thing that the Minister and my folks are still pretty thick. I'm sure an owl from my mum might get some answers - or I'll go down there myself and demand some," Charlie told his friend, his jaw set with determination.

Charlie managed to give Oliver a small side smile and nodded. "Well, you should know. Hard head," he teased, then sighed.

"Yeah I will punch the fucking wall again. I can't hit anything else can I? Unless you want to let me have a few goes at you," Charlie asked dryly.

Just then the meditwitch that Charlie had been talking to before came out and told the two friends that they could see Penelope. Charlie warned Oliver about how Pen looked.

"She's pale - and she can't be really moved so try not to jostle anything, yeah?"

He led Oliver into Penelope's room, where she was lying still and asleep.

Oliver rolled his eyes. "Still as thick as ever. I meant the other brother. The one who is a senior member of the Ministry."

Wood laughed, harder than the joke deserved, but he was trying to lift Charlie's mood. "If you start swinging at me, I'm swinging back. I'd also warn you to then watch your back, because I have some rather protective fans."

He followed Charlie into Penelope's room, noting the warning. He walked up to Penelope and gently picked up her hand. "Hey one-cent, guess I'll get to drive you crazy by keeping you from working after you get out of here."

"Ha, Ha," Charlie snarked back at Oliver. "If you mean perfect Percy, not bloody likely. He's in ruddy Africa with his new girlfriend," he sighed, rolling his own eyes for good measure. "I'm not going to ask him about anything concerning Penelope, any how. He's done enough damage with her as it is," Charlie said, his voice carrying a hint of resentment at the fact that Penelope was still in love with the git after all this time as well.

He smiled ruefully, then mussed up Oliver's perfectly coiffed hair. "I'd rather deal with your fans than a Horntail in heat, mate," Charlie told his friend. "C'mon - continue this and we'll get kicked out of the emerg."

Charlie smiled as Oliver took Penelope's hand and began talking to her as if she was awake. "One-cent...how ever did you come up with that again?"

"It was just a thought," Oliver shrugged. Although he certainly agreed that Percy had done enough damage to their red-headed friend. "Why people just can't let old love go, I'll never understand," he mumbled.

Wood looked deep in thought for a moment. "Perhaps, but let's be fair. If you're dealing with a horntail in heat, then you should compare it to one of my rabid fans in heat. I'm not sure if the dragon's got anything on that."

He chuckled a little and continued staring at Penelope for about a minute before re-telling the story. "A penny is Muggle currency in some country, I forget which. It is worth one cent..."

"If anything, I'd ask Dad to take a look into it. He's got more seniority at the Ministry than Percy and Ron combined," Charlie advised. He shook his head and sighed. "I don't know. Maybe...maybe some old loves can't be let go," he thought out loud. "If Pen doesn't pull through it won't be an issue anyway," he added morosely. He couldn't help it. Charlie had always faced the truth head on.

Smiling softly, Charlie nodded remembering how Oliver gave Penelope that nickname. "That's right. I keep forgetting. Though our Pen's worth more than a bank vault of galleons," he finished, looking down at the injured witch.

"Having connections is always a good thing," he nodded. "How are your parents doing? I haven't seen them in ages." He reached a hand up and smacked Charlie on the back of his head and grinned slightly. "Don't speak those words again. She'll make it. She has to."

"Indeed she is," Wood leaned down and kissed her cheek, then pet her hair. "Indeed she is. Maybe worth even more than two."

George was going to see Susan later on that day, but he was still very worried over Penelope, and how Charlie is taking all of this, if he'd even gone home or eaten.

So thinking of his brother, George had picked up a huge roast beef sandwich with all the trimmings, even a bowl of au jus if Charlie wanted to dip. As well he had several pieces of fruit that he could keep there if he planned on staying longer, and some chips to go with the sandwich as well.

Finding his brother at St. Mungo's was easy - all he had to do was look for the tired redhead. "Hey Charlie... how is she?" Charlie looked up at George but righted his gaze at the floor when George sat down beside him. "Here, I'm guessing you haven't eaten anything have you." George handed his brother the bag of goodies and clasped his hands together, leaning his elbows on his knees.

After seeing Penelope, Charlie had gone back out into the waiting room to check on Luna, but she was now gone. Most likely taken into a room to be looked over by a Healer - or at least he hoped. Charlie vowed to go and look for the witch, or Lavender but right now he was more worried for his mate.

Sitting down heavily in the waiting room yet again, Penelope had been wheeled into another healing session as her wound began to reopen again. It startled Charlie to see the blood begin to stain the bedsheets while he was just sitting there and talking to her - though she wasn't talking back.

The Healers and mediwitches were frantic and pushed him out of the room and there was nothing he could do but watch the medical team work on his best mate. Charlie was unable to stop the fearful tears from trickling down his face as he watched - until he could watch no more.

At the sound of George's voice, Charlie looked up with bloodshot eyes. "Hey..." he acknowledged weakly, then continued to stare down at his feet.

He took the bag of goodies with little enthusiasm as Charlie wasn't all that hungry. In fact, he hadn't eaten anything and although his stomach gurgled, food was the last thing on his mind.

Standing up and placing the bag on the chair, he began to shuffle around the waiting room.

"She's not good, George," Charlie told his brother, then stood facing away from him. "Not good at all."

George could tell Charlie had been crying before he'd arrived and there probably wasn't much he could do other than try and look after the older brother that always looked after him.

Even though Charlie did take the food, he probably wasn't hungry, but at least he had it now for when he was. George picked at his cuticles while Charlie told him the grim news that Penelope wasn't doing very well.

"I tried to get her here as soon as I could..." George said weakly and looked up to see Charlie shuffling about as if he was half-asleep. He stood up himself and walked over to make Charlie face him.

Taking his brother by the shoulders, George had to be strong for the both of them. "Hey... the Healers here are extraordinary, they'll take care of her." Now let me take care of you... a little at least. "Come here git." George hugged his older brother and continued to try and reassure him.

"I know you did, George. Fuck, if you hadn't..." Charlie began, then his voice closed up and he couldn't finish that sentence. Truth was, if George hadn't shown up, Penelope probably wouldn't be alive. "Don't you go thinking you should have done anything more, George. You did more than you know." You saved her life.

Just as Charlie brought the back of his hand to his mouth, seeing the small tremor in his fingers, he felt George's hands on his shoulders - and then he was embraced in his brother's hug. Charlie clung to his younger brother, hating that he needed the support but so damn glad that George was there.

The two Weasley's stood embracing, both of similar height and almost exact colouring that one could not think that they were anything but brothers. Several long moments passed, then Charlie pulled away, sniffling.

"Thanks, mate. Truthfully, I was hoping you'd come back after you left. I did this before with Pen and was able to handle it, but again so soon - it's just..." he shook his head, then walked back to the seats where they had been earlier.

"So what did you bring me? Nothing that's going to give me boils on my arse, yeah?"

George hated seeing his brother so torn up and only wished he could've done more - even though they both know he did all he could. "I know Charlie, I'm glad the healers have got her... they'll take good care of her."

Charlie's face crumbled and he tried to hide it behind his hand, but George knew. He comforted his older brother and just let him release in the only way he could.

When Charlie had gotten out whatever he needed to, they pulled apart and George tried a small lopsided smile. "You know I can't let you starve, or go through any of this on your own." He let out a soft chuckle and was happier when Charlie was joking with him as well.

"Not this time, sorry. There's a roast beef sandwich with au jus for dipping and lots of portable fruit and veg for laters. I didn't know if you would be hungry, but you do need to eat."

"Thanks for letting me unload like that, George," Charlie rasped, as he turned away to knuckle the left over moisture from his eyes. He was a fucking dragon keeper after all. That still doesn't mean you can't feel a small voice inside his head reminded him.

Sighing, Charlie broke open the sack of goodies and his stomach growled once more. "Merlin's balls, George. Put on an apron, you'll be bloody mum," Charlie joked lightly, taking out the sandwich which smelled heavenly. "Au jus, even. Gods, but am I ever glad you brought this. The food around here is pants - and that's putting it nicely."

Charlie took a healthy bite out of his sandwich, then gave his brother a weak smile as he chewed. He swallowed before continuing.

"Thanks. Again. You're a good little brother," he winked, then squeezed George's shoulder.

"It's no problem at all Charlie, unload away." His older brother's voice had a bur in it from fretting for the last couple days. It was good for him to get it out - keeping it inside would only make him feel worse.

Laughing and shaking his head, denying the apron George elaborated. "I didn't cook it mate, I only ordered it and picked it up. But hopefully it fills you up. I kind of figured you'd want something that actually tasted like something other than cardboard."

They were sitting down again and George was glad that Charlie had decided to start eating, he'd feel better after a nosh. "You're welcome. Is there anything else you need? I could get it for you?"

It had been one hell of a day. Or more than one day, Lavender didn’t remember anymore. Earlier Miss Clearwater’s wound had opened again, and it was getting more and more important to close it quickly. She had lost so much blood, and even with the potions and transfusions, Lavender was starting to worry that it just wasn’t enough. If they didn’t find a solution soon, she was going to march down to the Ministry herself and demand answers. From the Minister of Magic himself if need be. She didn’t care about the Ministry’s secrets; she just wanted to save her patient.

Grabbing a cup of coffee for herself, and upon further consideration, another for Charlie –he had been here nearly as long as she had, he probably needed it- she made her way back to Miss Clearwater’s room, knocking softly before entering. Seeing that Oliver had arrived, Lavender smiled a little to herself. At least Charlie wasn’t tackling this whole thing alone anymore. Holding out one of the cups for Charlie, she said, “Here. I brought you some coffee. You look like you need it.” Offering the one she had intended for herself to Oliver, she said, “I’m glad you’re here Oliver –er Mr. Wood. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me, or any of the other healers about.” Then she realized that he might not remember her, after all he had been several years ahead of her in school, and he certainly hadn’t had a school-girl crush on her all those years ago, so she added, “I’m Healer Brown, but you can call me Lavender.”

Oliver had spent the past couple of minutes watching Penelope in silence. He didn't turn when the healer had walked in, it was only the use of his name that caught his attention.

"Uh, hi," he gave a short wave. He hadn't the foggiest idea of who she was. But if pressed, he'd hazard a guess that she had perhaps been one of the healers who had kept an eye on him in any number of his past visits to the hospital. "Oh, well it's nice to meet you Lavender. And please call me Oliver or Wood. I am way too young to be a Mr, not to mention I play a game for a living."

“Oliver then, yes, it’s nice to meet you too,” well that answered that question. He had no idea who she was, that was fine though, Lavender really couldn’t blame him. “I just wish it had been under more pleasant circumstances.” Nodding when he mentioned playing a game for a living, she added, “Yes, I know, and you’ve survived more bludgers to the head than anyone I’ve ever heard of. You are a medical wonder.”

Moving around to the other side of the bed, Lavender cast a few charms to check on Miss Clearwater’s status. Trying not to let her concern show on her face, Lavender wrote down the updated stats in the chart. It didn’t look like the blood replenishing potions were having any effect at all. “She’s going to need another blood transfusion soon, so if either of you are uncomfortable around needles or blood, you might want to step out for a bit,” Lavender explained, trying her best to use her soothing healer voice.

"As do I, as do I." Oliver watched the healer as she moved around. She was pretty attractive. "A medical wonder, you say? Well, I shall add that to my list of wonderful attributes." He absently rubbed his jaw.

"Doesn't phase me," he said with a shrug as he went to stand in a corner so as not to be in the healer's way.

“Indeed,” Lavender said, watching Oliver rub at his jaw. Yes, he was still very attractive, but he didn’t quite have the same effect on her as he had in her third year. Which, Lavender took as a very good sign -she would hardly be able to do her job had she turned into a blushing, babbling fool.

Oh, no. Miss Clearwater’s vital monitor charm beeped. Her blood pressure was dropping. Internal bleeding –her stitches were giving. “Damnit,” she swore under her breath. “I’m going to need both of you to leave the room. Now,” she said tersely, not wanting to worry the two men, but needing them to understand the seriousness of the situation. With the alarms going off, soon there were nurses and medi-witches swarming the room to help. Lavender was giving orders, completely focused on saving her patient.

Charlie had smiled and nodded at Lavender when she arrived in the room. "You're worse than I am, being around here and not going home. I hope they're going to let you sleep at some point," he suggested.

He stayed quiet for the most part, stroking Penelope's hair as Oliver and Lavender exchanged words in low tones. He had noticed that Lavender was a bit awkward around his friend, which Charlie was used to - he knew when a witch found Oliver attractive. It happened more times than not.

About to open his mouth to ask Lavender a question, a series of sounds began to ring through the room and Lavender's face changed - snapping into one of fierce concentration.

Charlie allowed himself to be ushered out of Penelope's room again and his heart dropped into his stomach - for what seemed like the hundredth time since he got to the hospital.

"Hang in there, Pen. Please..." he whispered as him and Oliver were shoved out of the way.

Lavender smiled wryly at Charlie’s comment. A glance at her watch told her that her 36th straight hour here in the hospital was nearing. “I’ll catch a few minutes here and there between emergencies, and they’ll send me home eventually,” she said, thinking that it was awfully sweet that he was concerned about her. “You, Charlie, need to sleep at some point too, or else you’ll worry yourself sick, and I’ll have another patient on my hands,” Lavender admonished gently.

When everything went to hell again, Lavender was in full-blown healer mode. Vanishing the now obsolete stitches that had been holding Miss Clearwater’s abdomen closed, she began the arduous task of re-closing all of her wounds, ordering potions and a transfusion, now. She was happy with her team, they responded quickly and competently. “Alright, Miss Clearwater, Penelope, stay with us.”
