Sitting in Percy’s chair in Percy’s office, Nathan Webbe leaned back and surveyed his surroundings. He had always wanted to be the head of his own department, though whenever the opportunity came for him to advance he seemed to always get overlooked. A former HitWizard who had to retire from the field because of a debilitating hip injury, Nathan was still a young man eager to make his mark. He had to concede to a position as a clerk in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, but because of his background and credentials he could always be relied upon to fill in a spot when another had to go on holiday or was needed elsewhere temporarily.
He looked at the bookshelves in Percy’s office, crammed cheek to jowl with various tomes and decided that would be the first thing he would change. And the artwork. It wasn’t professional looking. A department head should have a professional looking office, not one filled with useless things - though he admitted the painting of the children’s hands was endearing. Maybe he could let that stay.
Gretchen, however, was a meddlesome witch who irritated him. He always kept a smile and talked to her kindly, though it grated on his nerves whenever she came in and asked for signatures. She should have been retired years ago. Nathan imagined some leggy blonde assistant that was young and fresh - eager to do his bidding and not have such an air of “I’ve worked here for longer than you’ve been alive so you must listen to me”.
Nathan was thinking of colour schemes when an high screech rattled him out of his day dreaming. With a startled curse, Nathan jumped up from his seat when an injured owl plunked itself down onto Percy’s desk, blood dripping from a gaping gash on its chest.
“Merlin’s fucking beard,” Nathan cried, his morning cup of tea upturned on some requisition forms while he tried to move the owl off the other parchment work. The owl bit him and squawked, looking around frantically. Its wings were tipped with bright orange feathers and Nathan stopped, glaring at the bird while he sucked at the injury on his thumb. “It’s you...” Nathan said in wonder, recognizing the bird. He had finished reading Percy’s case file on the mysterious owl and letters before slipping into his own thoughts. Now the bloody thing was right in front of him...bleeding all over a stack of T4-1012 forms.
“Shite,” Nathan muttered and the owl gave pitiful wail, obviously in pain. “Alright then. Bite me again and I’ll throw you into the nearest fire,” he warned, taking his cloak from the cloak hook in the office. The owl didn’t bite him as he gently scooped it up into his cloak and wrapped it up firmly. Nathan remembered the notation of Clearwater Clinic and Penelope Clearwater, the creature specialist, in the file. She was also a creature healer, and it was clear this owl needed it as soon as possible. The owl is the key to this child.
With a flash of green flame in a floo-connected fireplace, Nathan and the owl sped off to Hogsmeade.
