RP: I don't understand it
Date and Time: 11 February 2008 Late morning
Characters: Percy Weasley, Penelope Clearwater
Private/Public: Private
Location: Clearwater Clinic
Rating: PG
Warnings: Mild language
Summary: Percy takes the feather to Penelope for her take on the entire situation.
Completion: Complete

Percy stepped into Penelope’s clinic, nodding a greeting to the parrot who squawked as he entered. “Percy Weasley to see Miss Clearwater.” He told the bird formally.

As he unwound his scarf, Percy contemplated everything he had to do before tomorrow morning. The Hit Wizards had come to his office during a small staff meeting, with Percy telling Nathan and Gretchen what they would need to follow up on while he was gone.

Reynolds handed Percy the feather, closed up in a bag, and asked that he take it to Penelope for analyzing. Percy immediately agreed, sensing Reynolds’ frustration over the meager clues they had on the case. As soon as the meeting wrapped up, Percy was on his way to Hogsmeade, hoping he wouldn’t catch Penelope when she was horribly busy.

She had been searching for one of her old text books from the Artemis Institute when Penelope stumbled across a box of her notes back when she was studying in Greece. The morning had been quiet at the clinic, and so Penelope, being a complete pack-rat and hopelessly nostalgic, pulled the box free and began to rile through her notes behind her desk.

Penelope came across one carefully bound bit of parchment and she smiled as she unrolled it all. Suddenly her memories of Greece came rushing back.

In a small class of ten - five witches and five wizards - Professor Lysander Merukides stood in front of his large blackboard and began his lesson. The class was of a special group of students; only the brightest, most dedicated were accepted, but they also had to have one other ability which not all witches and wizards who handled creatures have. The gift of listening.

"As you well know, this course is dedicated to the study and application of Zoological Legilimency. It is a branch of magic which very few will ever succeed fully in, but most who practice it can harness the basics which will allow you to become better creature specialists."

Penelope had sat in on the edge of her seat, her quill scratching furiously across the parchment as she took her notes, her heart bouncing in her chest with excitement over this new subject.

Smiling as she flipped through more parchment, she came across her Legilimency journal which students had to keep to record their findings as they practiced the magic. Penelope read the notes on her third attempt, which she had actually connected with the hippocampus who's tail fin had been injured. She had managed to extract the creature's memory of getting too close to a muggle fishing boat.

"Excellent work, Miss Clearwater. Simply excellent," Professor Merukides had told her after she broke the connection with the hippocampus.

Penelope had to sit down after the connection, which her Professor had been ready for.

"Yes, the connection can drain you depending on the creature's mind. This one was rather ornery when we pulled him from the sea," he told her, handing her a glass of water.

"How do you feel, Penny?" one of her classmates asked, in awe since he had not been able to make the connection yet.

"Tired," Penelope had responded with a laugh. "But...amazing. Like I was the creature and not me," she explained.

"Wicked," her classmate responded, to which their Professor had chuckled.

"Indeed it is, but you must remember for that reason there are those situations which you must not attempt the connection..."

Professor Merukides' voice dissipated quickly when Congo croaked that she had a visitor. Penelope shook her head, then looked up. She swallowed and hastily put her notes away when she saw it was Percy, then scowled as a dirty streak of dust had transferred onto her pristine Healer's robes.

"Good morning," she greeted Percy brightly after performing a quick scourifying charm. Penelope hadn't realized she had another streak of dust on her nose.

Obviously Penelope was distracted. Percy gave her a small smile, clearing his throat and touching his own nose with a gloved hand. "You missed a bit."

He stepped closer, pulling the gloves off and stashing them into his pocket. "Been a slow day?" He glanced around the quiet clinic. "I wanted to tell you that Iris seems to be doing better. We "talk" every morning now so she's settling a bit."

"And I've had another interesting encounter with the mystery owl."

Flushing, Penelope muttered a 'thank-you' and wiped the top of her nose hastily, mentally reminding herself to scourify those storage boxes after Percy left.

"Erm, yes - I had been...filing," she told him. She gave him a small, sheepish smile back and nodded. "That's wonderful news. I'm glad to hear that," Penelope admitted.

At the news of there being another encounter with the mystery owl, Penelope's eyebrows shot up. "Another one? What happened?" she asked, instantly curious.

Percy restrained himself from smiling further when Penelope blushed and wiped the dirt from her nose.

When she perked up at the mention of the owl, Percy drew the feather from his pocket. "It showed up while I was talking with Angelina Johnson about some volunteer work. It stopped right in front of me this time, held my gaze. Only when I held my hand out did the owl drop the note. Again, it was in his talon."

Percy handed her the feather. "Angelina managed to get this, but we couldn't grab the owl. The letter burned up, but there were spots of blood on it. It only said "Please"." Percy choked on the last bit and cleared his throat.

"I'd like to bring you onto the case, in an official capacity, if you're willing."

Penelope watched as Percy withdrew an evidence bag from his pocket and her heart beat fast.

"Yes, Angelina came by with Kingston just the other day and I agreed to do a demonstration for the children under the Ministry's care," Penelope murmured, listening afterwards when he gave her the evidence bag.

Her eyes shot from the bag to Percy's when he said blood -and what the note had said. Clearly Percy was very bothered by it.

"Merlin, Circe and Morgana," she breathed, her excitement suddenly dropping and a fear replacing it. "It's probably best you didn't capture the owl, though... well I think that's going to be your best option to finding this person. What was it you managed to retrieve from the owl then?" Penelope looked at the bag which was sealed with a Ministry evidence spell.

Then confusion set it when he mentioned he wanted her on the case. "What? Why? Percy I'm just a creature healer," she told him. I'm nothing.

Percy smiled faintly at the thought of his nephew. "Oh did she? I should have warned you. Give that woman an assignment and she's worse than a dog with a bone. At least Kingston did not tear the clinic down."

Nodding when Penelope began to speak about the owl, Percy cleared his throat again. "I thought that too, I just wish I had something more concrete to go on."

"You've never been just anything, Penelope." Percy disagreed. "And you are a specialist in magical creatures. Hit Wizard Reynolds agreed that if anyone could discern something from the feather, it would be a specialist." He paused, unsure of her reaction. "But if you'd like me to leave you out of it, I will. I need help, Pen."

"Kingston was a joy to have around. Very inquisitive young man and enjoyed talking to Congo," Penelope assured Percy and noted he didn't mention about her helping to be involved with his Department's outings with the children.

"If the owl has come to you twice now, then it's a good guess it will come back again," she told him, fingering the seam of the evidence bag with anticipation. Penelope was dead curious on how much she could further help him.

Lowering her eyes, Penelope resisted the urge to shrug considering at she hardly felt like someone to Percy himself. "A feather?" she interrupted with sincere excitement. There was plenty she could do with a feather. Hopefully it hadn't been compromised.

Worrying her bottom lip with her teeth, Penelope thought to refuse - but then she heard Percy's admission of needing help and the tables turned. She inhaled sharply.

"Of course I'll help you, Percy," Penelope said gently.

"Kings is a barrel of laughs." Percy paused. "And thank you, for agreeing to help us out. The children will enjoy it."

Percy nodded in agreement, having come to a similar conclusion with Reynolds. "Yes, that was the general opinion. We're hoping the owl will lead us back to the child. But we'd still like to get somewhere before then."

He watched her toy with the evidence bag, running a hand through his hair. At first, he expected her to tell him no, that she didn't want to get involved. Then Penelope said she would help and Percy smiled broadly.

"You're fantastic," Percy gushed. "Thank you. Anything you can find out would be a great help to me, to the department and not to mention the anonymous writer."

"Of course. I always try to be helpful," Penelope told Percy with a small shrug. "Angelina and I got a chance to have a bit of a chat, which was enjoyable."

Congo skittered on his perch, the voices in the waiting room obviously disturbing him from his mid-morning nap. He raised his head and glared at Penelope, then stuck his head back under his pale grey wing.

"I'll floo call the Artemis Institute today and get owl samples to cross-examine with this specimen. They have nitrogen and hydrogen isotope ratios of collagen from owls all over Britain and Europe, which I'm guessing this owl is native to. If the same ones I isolate from this feather match to any of the ones that Artemis has on file, we can narrow down where exactly the owl's habitat is - possibly even down to the town of city," she told Percy with confidence.

"I can have the results as early as tomorrow morning. I'll owl you with my findings," Penelope concluded with a smile.

She beamed as Percy thanked her, as if any recognition by him was like a piece of bacon being thrown to a hungry mongrel. "I'll do what I can," Penelope said happily.

"Angelina's a gift, I'm glad you two had a nice chat." Percy said with a fond smile. "Course, I'm biased, as she gave the Weasleys one hell of a child."

Percy glanced at Congo, holding his hand up as though to apologize to the disturbed and ruffled parrot.

As Penelope went on about how she could analyze the feather, Percy blinked. Sure, he was an educated man, but whatever had just come out of her mouth seemed horribly complex. Percy felt a bit of pride and awe that she was so confident, that she knew exactly what she was talking about.

"Wow." Percy blinked again. "That's fantastic. If you think that will work - I obviously haven't a clue - that's wonderful. If we can locate the approximate city, that will be a huge win for our side." He paused, though, running his hand through his hair once more. "Ah. Actually, I'm leaving town tomorrow, bout mid-morning. I've been called back to South Africa, they've had a major atrocity there for displaced wizards."

"Well she did call Kingston a hellion, so I suppose you're right," Penelope joked lightly.

"I beg your pardon your majesty," she told her parrot, rolling her eyes. Penelope swore the bird got more ornery day by day.

She smiled brightly and nodded with enthusiasm. "Most definitely. That's the reason why Artemis has such ratios in their library and not just owls; just about any magical creature that hasn't gone extinct they have on record. I had to refer to them when I was in Romania when an unknown dragon came into the reserve," Penelope explained.

Her smile faded when Percy told her he wasn't going to be in town. "Well...who am I supposed to report to? When will you be back?"

Percy laughed outright. "Oh, he is a hellion. Angie is the first to say so. But we all dote on that child. If Angie and George weren't such good parents, he'd be spoilt rotten."

He snorted when Penelope referred to her parrot as "Your Majesty". "That's familiar, I call Iris "Princess" when she gets all irritated."

"That's amazing." Percy murmured as she went on about the Artemis Institute. He tried to not think that it was the very same institution she'd left him for. "I can't imagine having that much at your fingertips. I'd have gone moldy trying to read everything."

Percy hated making her smile fade, but he tried for a soft smile. "I'll be back in a week. I just want to help them start the rebuilding. You may report to Nathan Webbe or Hit Wizard Reynolds in the Missing Persons Division. If anything urgent comes up, I can be back in England within a few hours."

"Sounds like he is already - particularly with his uncle giving him a puppy," Penelope said wryly. "Poor Angelina sounds like she's at her wits end with...Witless."

She sighed and nodded with a short smile. "Well Congo was called "My Little Prince" by my grandmother and I refuse to do so. Therefore, he just gets "your majesty" which he seems to respond to."

"It is amazing. Artemis doesn't fool around when it comes to creature research and study. I was fortunate they took me in even though my application was past the acceptance date," Penelope said solemnly. She then nodded. "Yes, I spent many evenings in their libraries." Mostly to not spend every moment of her spare time thinking and worrying over Percy.

Penelope pressed her lips thinly, feeling like she was being handed off. An idea struck her. "Actually, I'll probably go to Flourish and Blotts tomorrow to buy Owls of the World, since they've just come out with a new edition. There could be new information which might help your case," she suggested. "I haven't seen Hermione since... well before the Yule Ball. I need to thank her for helping pick out a Christmas gift for my mother."

Percy grinned somewhat sheepishly. "You know, Kings told me he wanted a puppy and what was an uncle to do?"

"Ah, well, we all have our little names for our pets. Rupert is called mad rather often. I'd stop calling him that if he'd stop running around in circles."

A muscle in Percy's jaw twitched at the mention of Penelope's late admission to the Institute. "I think they were the lucky ones, to have you." He answered, trying to not think of the past, especially now.

Percy saw her face tighten and inwardly cringed. "I'm not trying to duck out on you, Penelope. The case is important, I'm not disputing that, but this is something I need to do. I feel obligated to go. No, not obligated, needed. I can't turn them down now, not when they need help more than ever."

He cleared his throat diplomatically as he could, willing his face to not turn bright red. "Actually, Hermione is going to volunteer as well."

"How diplomatic of you to say," Penelope mused tightly. "I suppose I had to do something with my life at the time." Considering the one I had waited for with you seemed to be not a priority.

Penelope felt the blood drain out of her face when her suspicions were confirmed. Oh she knew of his needs and obligations all to well. Whatever Percy wanted, he made sure to get it despite how it would affect others. She was being handed a case, to do Percy's work while he went off gallivanting across the world with his new bloody girlfriend.

How.

Typical.

"Right. Well, Mr. Weasley I'll be sure to give my results to your colleague as soon as possible," Penelope said primly, the bag clutched firmly in her hand.

"You'd better finish packing. Enjoy your trip."

Percy waited patiently until she was through. His first instinct was to snatch the feather back and let her get back to whatever she had going on in her life.

But he wouldn't.

After taking a breath to ensure he spoke evenly, calmly, Percy cleared his throat.

"If you have something you would rather be doing, by all means I will find another specialist. Truthfully, you are reputed as one of the best in your field." He exhaled slowly. "I know what you'd like to think. That I'm handing this over to you simply so I won't have to deal with it. Do you think I'm heading off on holiday?"

Percy did not move, but kept his eyes on her. "I am going to a place that reeks of death, where children without food in their bellies scream in the middle of the night. I will be ever haunted by what I have already seen, but I cannot, I will not turn a blind eye to it. You can believe whatever the hell you want, Penelope, but I did not have a say in the timing."

He indicated to the bag in her hand. "If you want to help my department, I would appreciate it. But none of this, and I mean none is a damn personal insult to you, no matter how you'd like to believe it is. I am taking care of business before I march into hell."

"You go do whatever bloody thing you have to do Mr. Weasley. I will do whatever you want me to do. That's why you asked me isn't it? Since this is a professional request I will give it my top priority," she finished evenly. Once again, Penelope was invisible.

"I wouldn't want you to miss your portkey. I know how dearly they are to book at the last minute," she said, driving her point home.

Percy sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Why is everything a battle with you? I only came here to ask for help and all of the sudden I'm this terrible person who's only using you." He held his hands up.

He stopped speaking for several moments, completely at a loss. Without any idea what to do, what to say, Percy merely stared at her.

"You were right about something," he said finally in a low tone. "I don't know who you are anymore. You think you know me, but you don't."

Percy gave her a bemused smile, shrugging his shoulders and holding his hands out in surrender. "I honestly don't know what else I can say."

"And I said I would give you that help," Penelope retorted in an unemotional voice. She stared at him back, her face a blank slate.

"That's neither here nor there, Mr. Weasley. As I said, this is a professional arrangement. I will do as you ask, and I will make sure I will get results for you. Results are everything, if memory serves."

She would do anything for him, and he wouldn't even care. She had served her purpose in his life.

...you must remember...situations which you must not attempt the connection...

"I've been given my instructions, what more should you say?"

Percy stared at the blank, lifeless face of a woman he'd been prepared to spend eternity with. All he saw there was a shell, a physical form of that girl with no trace of the love he'd been prepared to do anything for.

As she used her formal tones, Percy managed to gather his wits enough to snap his own in place. If she wanted to believe he felt nothing for her because he was finally able to move on there was little he could do.

"Thank you for your assistance, Miss Clearwater." Percy replied in a steady tone. "I will look in on your progress upon my return from Africa. I wish you luck in the endeavor, for the child's sake."

He gave Penelope a short bow, then turned on his heel as though to leave the shop. There's nothing I can do. Everything I do just leaves her more upset. Buck up, Weasley, you cannot save the whole damn world.

"Of course. Good afternoon," Penelope responded back, though every bit of her screamed otherwise. She clenched the evidence bag tight in her hand, and Congo looked curiously up from under his wing, noting the change in his owner's voice. Sadness.

...you must remember...situations which you must not attempt the connection...

Penelope looked down at her bare hands and she knew what she had to do.
