After receiving Daphne's owl earlier, advising him on the progress in France regarding Lynus' disappearance, Draco had sent out inquiries after Marcus. It was odd that Marcus hadn't contacted Daphne, particularly since it was obvious by all how close the two had become.

Since Draco's return to England, he had meticulously carried out improvements to Malfoy Manor. Over the years many of the rooms furnishings had been left in thick layers of dust and the fabric disintegrating. As well, most of rooms required updating thought there had been some rooms Draco had left to update until later.

On the second floor of the Manor, in the west wing, there was a pair of locked doors at the end of the main hallway. It had been Narcissa's own study - a place where she took meetings with guests and spent long hours reading in leisure. At least, that was Draco's main recollection of the room.

Deciding to finally open the study, Draco unlocked the doors when the Manor was quiet. He wouldn't have done so while Daphne was about. He didn't want her feminine curiosity exploring certain rooms without his expressed permission. So far, she had been courteous to this simple demand.

Whoever had taken care of the Manor following Narcissa's murder - thought it had been documented as an 'accidental death' - had made sure the furnishings and paintings in her study were covered appropriately. Draco swallowed as he stepped inside, millions of tiny dust particles caught in the sunlight breaking through the separations of the heavy velvet curtains.

The one piece of furniture that Draco had always been curious about since he was a young boy was Narcissa's desk. He had always been told to never go through his mother's desk, and Draco, even though he hated being told what to do, did obey that request. Now, Narcissa was dead and she wouldn't be here to chastise him.

Draco pulled off the large sheet which had been a pristine white at one point, but was dirtied by many years of grime. In a small cloud of dust, the dark, rich wood of the desk appeared. He tried to open it, but of course the desk was locked. No matter. Not bothering to search a key, Draco took out his wand and performed the necessary charm to unlock the drawers and covered nooks.

He rifled through the fragile parchment, some of it crumbling under his fingertips. Most of it was frivolous nonsense - no secrets there. Draco pulled open a drawer, which contained a fabric covered box. His brows furrowed as he took the box out of the drawer, his fingertips feeling the smoothness of the fabric which covered it.

A press on the little clasp, and Draco heard an audible click. He lifted the lid and peered inside. What he found was strange indeed.

Draco lifted the blank miniature picture frame, the gold aged on the edges. He wondered why his mother would have kept a blank frame in a box like this - and who was the frame supposed to be for?

Severus was moving deftly through the portraits hanging on the walls of Hogwarts, ignoring the occasional irritated look he garnered from the occupant of whatever portrait he happened to be traversing at the time. Slughorn was in the middle of doing what he laughingly called 'teaching' so that made that portrait inaccessible for the moment and Minerva was not in her office for him to snark at.

He'd always been one to pace the corridors of Hogwarts but since he was merely a portrait these days, this was the best he could do. Besides it did give him the entertainment of occasionally catching a student doing something wrong.

As he slid out of one portrait but before he entered the next, he saw an odd 'light' off to one side. He frowned at the sight. It very strongly resembled the 'light' that indicated each of his own portraits. But he only had the two as far as he knew, both inside Hogwarts. This had the feeling of something outside of the school.

Who in Merlin's name would have a portrait of him? And did he really want to know?

He stared at the light for a moment longer then moved towards it. It might be best if he found out. He paused for a moment at the edges of the portrait, listening carefully and trying to get a hint of who might be on the other side but there didn't seem to be anything of any use.

Finally he strode out into the portrait proper and arched an eyebrow when he saw who was looking at him. He doubted the frame he was inhabiting belonged to the man looking at him or his father. Therefore it must have belonged to Narcissa. How very interesting.

"Draco," he said archly in greeting. "Are you searching through your mother's belongings for any particular reason?"

Examining the empty frame, Draco had turned it over and over in his hands, trying to find a mark or a maker - any indication of what or who. Alas, the secret of the frame remained a mystery for he found nothing by sight alone.

Exhaling sharply, Draco was about to set the frame on the smooth polished top of the desk to perform detection spells on it when a familiar face popped into the middle of the black canvas - startling Draco.

He gained his composure swiftly, and glared back at the portrait of Severus Snape.

"Since we're asking questions, I'd like to know why you are a part of my mother's belongings."

Severus arched an eyebrow. "Your mother and I were friends after a fashion. She trusted me in her own way." Certainly she'd trusted him enough to come to him after Draco had been given the ask to kill Albus.

He shrugged and looked around the frame first then what he could see of the room beyond Draco. "As for why she had the portrait done, I have no idea. It was clearly done after my death but this is the first I have known about it."

Actually Draco's question was a very intriguing one. Why had Narcissa had the portrait prepared for him? The timing meant that she must have already known the truth of his actions among the Death Eaters. Had she wanted to harangue him for his 'disloyalty'? Or had she some other purpose?

"It's unfortunate that she had little trust in her own son," Draco observed, unable to keep the sneer off his face in remembrance. After the Dark Lord had fallen, Narcissa had divulged her actions to protect her only son to Draco, much to his own embarrassment. He was loathe to admit that if Severus had not stepped up to the task he was assigned, Draco probably would be spending his days in Azkaban.

"Since my mother was murdered and unable to provide answers, your guess is as good as my own, Severus."

Draco pursed his lips in thought. "Particularly if the commission of a portrait was done without your knowledge. I thought only portraits started before a person's death could permit that person to move in and out of them. If it was done after your death...how are you able to access it?"

Severus snorted derisively. "She wanted to keep you outof prison and alive," he said with a sneer. "The Dark Lord meant for you to fail as a punishment for Lucius' failure in the Ministry." His expression became cool. "And show some respect for her. She risked a great deal by coming to me. I could have turned her into the Dark Lord for being so foolish as to speak out of turn... as Bellatrix reminded her repeatedly."

He arched an eyebrow and gave a small shrug. "Then her reasoning died with her. As far as I could have friends given my tasks, she was a good one."

"I had no idea she was considering this," he said diffidently. "But nevertheless the portrait is keyed to me. Perhaps the Vow that bound us together enabled her to do so? Perhaps she had obtained something of mine that enabled her to key it to me. I have no idea what became of my belongings, other than my books, after my death."

The side of Draco's mouth twitched when he was rebuked by Severus. It hadn't been the first time, and he had near forgotten just how formidable the Potions Master could be when doing so. Even while still in portrait form.

He let the conversation about his mother drop. Narcissa was really the only person Draco ever loved and he wasn't as resentful towards her as he let Severus think.

Draco was curious when Severus mentioned about the unbreakable vow. Perhaps there was more within Narcissa's personal effects that would reveal that very reasoning? Did she have something of the Potion Master's giving her the ability to create the miniature? Tapping his finger to his lips, Draco thought it might be a good idea to go to Spinner's End and try and deduce just what indeed happened to Severus' belongings.

"Then it might be prudent for me to find out - for both of us," Draco murmured, then delicately leaned the portrait against the desk so it was still face up.

"I apologize, Severus, for my rudeness. Your appearance is obviously startling, though not unwelcome. Was it not for your concern of me when I was younger I probably would be dead. For that I thank you. I don't believe I ever did get the chance to say that," Draco said with as much sincerity as he was capable of.

Severus arched an eyebrow. It was indeed a question he would not mind having answered. Had Narcissa been able to get her hands on something of his that would be sufficient for her to create the portrait or had the Vow been enough? It was an intriguing puzzle.

"I would assume Minerva would know what became of my belongings at Hogwarts," he said diffidently. "I do not know what has become of my home at Spinner's End. I left it heavily warded. How many of those wards survived my death is unknown. You should be able to gain access."

He was almost indifferent to what was done with his possessions. It wasn't as if he had any use for them now and if Draco could find some use for them then so be it. If he felt like destroying them, then it was hardly something he could anything about.

He inclined his head slightly at Draco's apology. "You are welcome though the thanks is unnecessary. I did what I could to protect my Slytherins, limited though that was by my role. Your mother was..." He paused and grimaced. "Persistent." He waved a dismissive hand. "There were also tactical advantages in the whole situation though on the whole I would rather have handled matters in another way."
