Daphne stood in her suite at Malfoy Manor, staring at the letter penned in her sister-in-law’s elegant hand. The letter was as most from her fair and lovely sister through marriage, short, carefully worded and blunt.
Daphne,
Your brother is missing. I have alerted the French authorities. Please, come to Marseilles as soon as possible. The children and I need your comforting presence now more than ever.
~Anne
There could be no ignoring this. Daphne knew that Lynus was not missing, but to show no interest in his disappearance would bring about suspicion. The plan she’d already formed seemed right on track. Though she did not know what Draco and Marcus had done with Lynus’ mangled body, she knew them both well. No body would ever be found.
“Getty, pack my things into one trunk. I must go to Anne.” Daphne said carefully, for the Elves knew nothing of their former-master’s demise.
Walking into the main corridor of the Manor, Daphne searched for one of Draco’s men. He smiled faintly at her, friendly and kind to the woman who suddenly moved into their boss’ territory.
“I must speak with the Ambassador, I’ve had grave news from France.”
The man frowned. “He will not return until nightfall. Can it wait that long?”
Daphne shook her head. The faster she left, in a seeming panic, the better. “No. I shall leave a note with you.”
She penned the note quickly, then wrote out another to be sent to Marcus at Flint Manor.
Draco,
Anne has just given me grave news indeed. Lynus seems to have gone missing. The authorities are involved. I fear for Anne’s delicate nerves, she is in need of her kin through this dire time. I will be leaving for Marseilles immediately.
Take care of yourself whilst I am gone. If you wish to come to Marseilles, know that you are most welcome.
Affectionately,
Daphne
The second letter flew off with Chada as Getty arrived in the hall carrying Daphne’s mink-lined cloak and a trunk floating behind her. Linc, too, was ready to depart as Daphne moved to the fireplace. They stepped through the green flames after Daphne called out for Herverte Vineyard.
Chada gave the letter to Marcus’ butler at Malfoy Manor.
Marcus,
Anne has sent me word that Lynus is missing. I am off for France, even before you receive this letter. She has need of me during this terrible time. I know not how long I will be gone, but I fear the worst for my brother.
If you can, please come to Marseilles. I have no doubt I will need you before the end.
With love,
Daphne
