Who: Ainsley Innis and Nora Branstone
What: Nora needs an education and extroversion
Where: Dolls, a lesbian bar in Edinburgh
When: Wednesday evening, 12th March
Rating: PG-13 (maybe?)
Status: Closed; Incomplete

This whole scour-the-planet-for-Lestrange thing was getting old. Really bloody old. Ainsley couldn't just refuse to do it, though. Especially not when her entire division was on it and particularly not when she was taking his last victim out for a bit of extroversion that night. She'd owled Nora earlier in the day to tell her work absolutely would not release it's vice-like grip on her until at least seven. Through owls they arranged to meet up at Dolls. While she desperately wanted to rip her hair out and possibly beat the hell out of either a punching bag or a person, Ainsley reminded herself with whom and why she was going out to Dolls tonight.

Ains had managed to get home, shower and relax before she had to go out to meet up with Nora, who she didn't actually know at all. The Auror figured there weren't too many people likely to be wearing a skirt and jumper ensemble and considering recent happenings she was willing to bet Nora would be covered more than anyone else going to the bar. She showed up early clad in a simple white tank, fitted jeans that weren't too tight, and motorcycle boots along with a long, black jacket. Ainsley was trying to not be too much of a dyke but she suspected she was failing just a little bit at that. "Whatever, she's looking for a lesbian, right? Maybe I should've butched it up," she muttered quietly to herself as she leaned against the stone wall.

Nora was standing in the center of the room, her simple jumper and long skirts drawing a fair amount of attention from the women in the room. She crossed her arms, glancing around at them.

"No, I've not walked out of 1944," she commented as she reached the bar, leaning against it and said, "The boots are a bit later, any road. Can I have something fizzy?" Nora's eyes wandered the area, wondering who she was meeting and what, exactly, the other woman would be wearing. A curious glance met a younger woman who was gyrating on the dance floor - or floor, rather- she appeared to be the only one dancing - her hips swaying in front of a couple other women.

Probably that wasn't Ainsley, she decided as she took the drink from the bartender, sipping it gingerly.

Ainsley had to see through the throng of women and get passed to the woman she was fairly certain was so straight she made a ruler look a bit off. Once she accomplished that it was easy to find the only woman wearing a skirt past her knees and the only woman not wearing something that hugged her body at all. She wove her way through the bodies populating the inside of the bar and came up right behind the woman she was fairly certain had to be Nora.

After nodding at the bartender and ordering a beer her eyes turned toward the young woman. "I thought you'd actually be harder to find," she commented casually before her mouth turned up into a smile. "I'm Ainsley."

"Nora," she answered, sticking her hand straight out with a grin. "You didn't tell me I was going to look horrible here. I don't think I even own anything from this decade." She tilted her head, then added, "You look nice though - is that how I should've dressed? I probably could've gotten a wifebeater from the bloke downstairs if I've given him a good go about it."

Ainsley took the offered hand with a small laugh. "I told you to come as you are. Who said you look horrible?" She didn't exactly fit the preening peacock vibe but considering some of the more extreme butch and even extreme femmes Ainsley found the understatedness of Nora refreshing. "There's no 'should've dressed' unless you feel like pretending to be something you're not. The point was to get you out of the house, love, not go through the effort of trying to impress someone for no reason. Takes too much energy, putting on the show."

"I never put on a show much," Nora said thoughtfully. "That was part of my problem." With a smile, she leaned against the bar, sipping at her drink as she eyed the other woman. "So what is it you do, exactly? Besides being a lesbian? It seems like that really ought to be a side profession."

"Aye, it ought to be. I hear the money's not half as good as it used to be. Now, being a poof, that's still pretty profitable. Especially if you land yourself one of those rich, older men who wants to keep a younger man around largely as his pet and trophy. Could make a good living in that." Ainsley grinned at her. How this girl didn't have more friends was a bit beyond her. Sure, there could be vast, glaring flaws hiding under the humour, but maintaining humour after being attacked by Lestrange was quite something. "Sadly, really had to leave lesbian more as a hobby, you know? Being an Auror's what buys my drinks." Even if it wasn't her precise technical title, she couldn't actually say anything about being in Special Operations anyway so it was easier to just give that.

"What is it you did for the museum before you quit?" It wasn't exactly hard to go back and read a bit of the girl's writings once one decided to be the one to drag her out of her house for a bit.

"I worked in Collections," she sighed. "Aye, but I loved it. Tagging items, spelling them to see if there was any dark magic attached... that sort of thing. I thought of looking for another job in the field but really, the only other options are moving far off or going to Borgin's and I'm not sure I really fancy either as a life choice." Her eyes sparkled as she said, "I could, I suppose, go borrow some bloke's hair and take up poofing. I bet it's a tremendous resume builder."

"How good are you at potions? Make enough polyjuice and you could have the easy life in a matter of days." Ains was picturing Nora as some fresh faced little twink. It was a highly amusing image, but somehow she just couldn't picture that dirty come hither look on her face, even if she were wearing a male one. "I'm assuming then you've no hopes of returning, then? I mean, not even with a bit of time?"

"I don't really know. I wrote a note and stuck it under my boss' door. I didn't even go in to do it and that seems pretty bloody final, doesn't it?" She glanced up at the older woman. "I could travel. Or take up something new. I just haven't figured it out yet. I think maybe that job was comfortable. And maybe I need not to be comfortable because that didn't really work out."

Another drink before she said, "I never make any sense."

"You're going to have to try a lot harder than that to not make sense to me, love. Years of dealing with hysterical people, here. Now those don't make any bleeding sense. Bloody babbling on about monsters or shadows and shite only for it to turn out they're talking about a dementor or the neighbour's dog." She shook her head and drained nearly a third of her pint. It was one of those weeks.

"There's always the fantastic, fast-paced and action-packed life of a porn star for you to pursue," she offered with a smile. "Or not. What's it you like?"

"I wouldn't be any good at it. I think I'm pretty awful at sex," she said cheerfully. "I never really got the hang of how to get condoms on a bloke right and then it always looked so bloody funny."

"What do I like? Oh, loads of things. Books and children and running about looking at things. I suppose I could try to be a teacher or a bike messenger. It wouldn't have to be a wizarding thing." Tilting her head, she said, "Do you suppose anyone just retires from wizardry? I wonder, is it even possible?"

Ainsley was in the process of taking a much smaller drink when she half-choked on the liquid going down her throat. "You sure you might not be secretly gay?" she asked, still coughing. Soon the coughing gave way to laughter. "Aye, but blokes do look right funny naked anyhow. Reckon you're meant to look past it and get to the point where it feels good." Mentally she gave the girl points for being so chipper in her low opinion of her own sexual prowess.

"I don't see why you can't just stop using magic and just cease to be part of the world. You can't take away your proficiency with it any more than you can stop your hair growing in brown, but you can dye it red if you want and no one has to know any better, you know? Aye, reckon you'd be a fetching bike messenger. You could be a librarian. Y'know, be the one to do the reading room with the kidlings and all."

"I never thought about it," Nora said. "I think my mum'd kill me anyhow. She's not terribly for that sort of thing. I'm afraid she believes in rings and marriage and all that." Her fingers reached out, stirring her drink thoughtfully. "Not that I wouldn't have liked it, maybe, but when I had the chance, I just... well, I sort of couldn't do it. I backed out a couple of months before the wedding."

Ainsley was having a hard time following exactly what she was talking about and ended up peering at Nora in confusion. "Your mum would kill you for being lesbian and you backed out of a wedding and how do these relate to one another? Maybe it's just been a longer day than I thought it was, love, but your points a, b, and c don't live anywhere near each other."

"I'm thinking out loud again," she turned self-conscious as she muttered, "I really don't know. Next subject?"

Her eyes glanced up at Ainsley, realizing that she was forgetting how to behave with another person nearby. Brushing hair behind her ear, she murmured, "I suppose I keep thinking that everyone knows my life story. It's been in all the papers, hasn't it? It seems like it."

Ains shrugged, "Well if it has you'd be assuming I read the information in the first place and that I retained it from however long ago it was. Honestly, unless it was worthy of mention in the Auror headquarters I wouldn't expect me to remember much of anything I read in the Prophet. Aye, mostly rubbish in there anyway, who wants to retain that?"

"You'd be surprised," she said but her voice had turned hopeful, her eyes bright. "But I'm glad to hear it. I want to be yesterday's news. I never was good at being the center of attention. I think it's being an only child. You get tired of it, after a while."

Glancing over at Ainsley, she said, "So do you have family? Brothers? Sisters? Presumably you'd parents once at least."

"Aye, well the only news you are to me is a girl in desperate need of getting out of her house more. Which, by the way, we're going to have to work on a lot." Ainsley gave her a good-natured grin and a wink before taking another drink from her glass and its diminishing beer content.

"Ah, well, I did have parents once. They were lovely people, muggles. They died in the war, though, because the Death Eaters didn't believe them about not knowing where I was hiding out. They went not long after my husband. I've a brother though, Cael. He lives in Japan with a fiancée he met there. Obviously I don't see him much."

"Japan!" A laugh and gleam played across her eyes. "Have you been there then? What's it? How did your brother end up there?" The questions came flooding from her easily - Nora was always excited about foreign places. And Ainsley seemed exotic as it was, with her slight burr and way of speaking.

Now there was a drastic change in temperament, wasn't there? It made the woman laugh, eyes lighting up a bit as well. "I've not been there but once and only for a day before my boss, lovely man that he is, decided there was something he absolutely had to have me work on so I had to come back at once. Grand, innit? So thoughtful of him," her tone was dry, laden heavily with sarcasm. Ainsley took in a deep breath and sighed. "It was a terrible use of a portkey, I'll have you know."

Setting her empty glass down on the bar, Ainsley tried to remember just how Cael did get to Japan. "Well, Cael's a linguist. Aye, I pulled him from uni and sent him out of the country when mum and dad were killed. He went traipsing about Europe for about a week before finding his way to Asia and fell in love with it. When the war was over and I let him come back he changed his major to a dual in Japanese and Korean. How he could stick Korean is beyond me. That language is more than a bit insane. After uni he went off, declared himself done with the Orkneys and Britain as a whole. He went to Korea for a bit but it didn't suit so he went to Japan. Aye, and you couldn't convince the bloke to leave ever since his aeroplane first touched wheels down. He just traded one island for another but something about that culture he adores. Something other than fit Japanese girls wandering about, eve."

"Is he a wizard too?" Nora asked thoughtfully. "The magic over there has always seemed so different to me, at least with the artifacts." Her hands traced lines in the bar as she added, "More controlled. I read something once that talked about a group of monks who grew a garden, training it for centuries. I can't imagine what that would do to a spell. Or a child, even."

"No, everyone was muggles in my family so far as I'm aware. I'm the only witch. Cael's just a standard issue Scot, really." Sometimes Ainsley wondered if there had to have been magic somewhere in the line that she didn't know about. It seemed strange for it to just crop up suddenly and without warning in her. "The Japanese are interesting people in general, from what little I know of them. Did you know every language uses the same part of the brain to be processed when understood or used? Only Japanese uses an entirely different part of the brain and no one knows why or has found any other language that also uses that part of the brain."

"I'd no idea," Nora said in surprise, blinking slightly. "What part does it use? I wonder how that affects someone. And strokes- if they've a stroke, is that somehow different?"

"Don't know," Ains shrugged. "I just know it does. You could always go off to Japan with a faked medical degree or some such and try to do heaps of testing on the lot of them. Don't reckon they'd appreciate it much, though. It's only the language itself that uses a different part, far as I'm aware. I'd think a stroke would do the same to them as anyone else."
