Breathe....
WHO: Gar and Izabela
WHEN: Very Recently.
WHAT: A walk and talk
WHERE: In the fields surrounding the Carnivale, before opening.
STATUS: Complete and closed.
It was nice to just feel good. Izabela could scarcely remember the last time that she'd been in a bad mood. Not just because she'd pushed the majority of it all down in the first place, but because she had something now that genuinely made her happy. It was really just great. There was no other way to describe it. That day, before carnival hours were set to start, she'd asked Gar if he wanted to take a walk. Something simple. He hadn't seemed opposed to the idea. And so, they went out to take a walk. Smuff was with them as well. It was just nice. Well...minus the fact that it was cold. But keeping near Gar made her warmer anyway.
Gar walked beside Iza and kept his arm around her shoulders as they cut through the tall grass of the field they were exploring. He had put a bell on Smuff's collar so they could track her when she got out of sight, and he was letting her crawl through the grass and explore a world very different than the inside of his trailer. She had been a bit apprehensive at first, but was quickly getting more and more bold. " You will let me know if you get too cold..." he said and looked down at Iza and met her eyes with his.
The grass was tall and it brushed their legs as they walked. She was watching Smuff as she crawled through the grass. It had to be entirely different than her exploring Gar's trailer. And it was fine. The bell on her collar let them know where she was when she got out of sight, so there wasn't any worry of losing her. When Gar commented about letting him know if she was cold, Iza looked up at him with a smile. "I will. But I'm fine. You're perfect for keeping me warm." She leaned closer to him then. "This is nice. Just really...simple."
Gar nodded and leaned over to place a kiss on the top of her head. "Simple is good. I try to get back to the simple activities when I feel.... anger, or dismay." he said then realized that perhaps she might think he was talking about her. "Not because of anything you say or do my lovely. It is the mortal world as a whole, what has happened here, to myself and my brethren and since." he said then realized he was getting into that melancholy that Sioux always chastised him about. It seemed to be as much a part of him as the rest of his personality.
When he kissed her on the top of her head, another word came to mind. Safe. With his arm wrapped around her like that, she couldn't help but feel that nothing would ever hurt her. He was her guardian angel, after all. His mention of getting back to simple things when he was angry or feeling dismay made her a little bit confused. She certainly hoped that it wasn't her making him feel that way. But he went on to explain. It was hard to forget just who and what Gar was. No matter how he was when he was with her, she knew that he was something greater than her understanding. "Simple things tend to help, yes. And I'm sorry that you ever feel anger or dismay." It wasn't her fault, but someone had to apologize. "...I also hope that me being around makes things at least a little better for you."
Gar smiled at Iza. "You do. Most of you here do fill me with a sense of calm, and camaraderie. You are His favorite creation, and I am never bored looking at you, and watching you live your lives, and pass into time." he said, then a sad flash of the memory of the family he had lost so long ago came from out of his repressed past. Again, he forced that away and down. "There are many joys I have seen, and felt over the years. They well outweigh the sadness and anger." he said and smiled at her. Even when he was happy, a smile could be an eerie thing on Gar.
You are His favorite creation. Somehow, she didn't imagine that God had written half-basilisk into the master plan. But she wouldn't argue. She could at least understand that watching people would be interesting for him, considering he'd lived so long and had seen so many things. Time had changed humans and other creatures alike, she was more than sure. "It's good that you've had joys to outweigh the sadness and anger. Everyone needs that." The smile on his face was something she'd seen more often lately. And it was nice to see. But sometimes it was a little odd on him. Iza was quiet for a minute, seeing Smuff pop up out of the grass for a moment only to disappear again with the jingle of the bell on her collar. "So, this is a change in subject, but I'm curious to know...do you still think I'm crazy for getting you a kitten for Christmas?"
Gar was watching the kitten scamper about, much like a protective parent watching over a child. A very fuzzy child. "Yes." he said simply in answer to her question and then chuckled deeply. "But it's a kind of crazy that I like." he added. "I like having someone keeping me company at night, who doesn't take up the middle of the bed, and insist on me leaving the toilet lid in a certain position." he said with a smirk. "I suppose she is the bed room mate I have had in a few thousand years or so."
"Oh, well as long as it's the sort of crazy that you like." She couldn't help but laugh a bit. "Clearly kittens can come out of nowhere and prove that they're ideal roommates." Generally agreeable creatures, they were. And being so small, they scarcely took up any room. "Although, if you want someone to keep you company at night who doesn't take up space in your bed, maybe that means I shouldn't sleep over anymore." She said it matter-of-factly, but would she ever actually follow through on it? Likely not. True to what Gar had said, it was nice not to be alone at night. Having someone to hold and keep you close as you slept...it was a comfort.
Gar looked back down at Iza and gave her a "Yeah, right." expression. "So, if that is what you want. I won't force you to come over and subject yourself to me." he said in a sad tone of voice punctuated with a heavy sigh. "I knew it was too good to last. I am just not fit enough for human company." he said and dramatically draped his arm over his eyes and stopped walking.
"Subject myself to you? I thought you were subjecting yourself to me, what with me taking up the valuable space in your bed." His voice sounded sad as did the sigh he heaved. Acting at its finest. Though the way he stopped walking and draped his arm over his eyes was quite the dramatic touch. She stopped as well, moving so that she was facing him. "...even if you think you're not fit enough for human company, that doesn't matter with me." A bit of a smirk touched her lips. "I'm not human, remember? Being half doesn't count."
Gar heard that and dropped his arm down and rubbed at his chin with one hand. "That's right... So I guess I don't have to worry then..." he said then put his hands on her hips and leaned in for a kiss. When he pulled back he smiled at her. "May I ask you a question? It's a rather personal one..." he said then waited for her answer.
Ah, loopholes. So very convenient they were. "You don't have to worry." She didn't stop him when he put his hands on her hips and she most certainly didn't stop him when he leaned in to kiss her. She kissed him back, of course, and there was a smile on her lips when she pulled back. "Sure, ask away." There were very few questions that she felt uncomfortable answering anymore.
Gar took in a deep breath, and then let it out before he asked. "How did you come to be? How were you created?" he asked and even though he was eons old, he seemed to be asking as innocent a question as a child might. "Tell me about your father, and your mother..." he said then looked around and found a place to sit down on some of the grass. Once he was sitting down, he pulled her down to sit cuddled in his lap.
Somehow she imagined that he'd ask that question of her sooner or later. It was a logical thing to ask. And she'd told the story so many times by then that it didn't make a difference if she told it one more time. Once he'd sat and he'd pulled her down to sit in his lap, she started in with her story. "Well...my mother was human. And she was obsessed with the legend of the basilisk. She had books and artistic renderings of it. Even a necklace with a serpent as the pendant that she'd always wear. Just her fascination, I suppose. As for my father, he was exactly what you'd think. A giant snake." She said it like it was almost the plainest thing in the world. "While my mother was away for a business retreat, she and her colleagues traveled to a remote spot in the country. They'd had dinner and perhaps drank a bit too much before going to sit and talk by a lake they'd been told about. My father saw them as prey. He killed all of them. He was going to kill my mother as well, but he noticed her necklace." Izabela shrugged the slightest bit. "Perhaps it was pride that drew him to her. He took a human form and, after learning more of her fascination and obsession, he seduced her. She woke the next morning with his words in her mind. You've been touched by the king of the serpents, he'd said." She ran a hand through her hair, pausing for a moment. "She became pregnant, of course. I was normal-looking on the day I was born, but soon enough the scales started to show...and it became more than obvious what I was."
Gar listened attentively and nodded at the end of the story. He was glad the Basilisk had taken a human form for the act of procreation, or that might have weirded him out, and he had seen a great many things in his time. "Well, I am glad that you came to be." he smiled. "It would appear that it is so easy for us to be with each other. I have tried to be this way with other women for a very long time, but usually it was a great failure." he said and then make a "tsking" sound to call Smuff over to them. Soon the cat came slinking out of the tall grass, full of grass debris and some stickers. She crawled into Iza's lap and made herself at home, as she started to groom her fur. "It seems like she likes you as much as I do."
She was kind of glad that he didn't seem to be freaked out by her story. Or at least, not outwardly freaked out. She'd seen quite a few different reactions to it, after all. Iza chuckled a bit when Gar said that he was glad that she came to be. "I have to say I'm glad for that as well." Existing was always nice. Not to mention the experiences she would have missed out on. "...it is easy, isn't?" She smiled softly. "Just focus on the now. I'm not going anywhere, so you're going to have a tough time getting rid of me if you wanted me to go." As he called Smuff to them, she watched the kitten come out the grass. There were bits and pieces of the grass in her fur. Still, it didn't make her any less cute as she scrambled up into Izabela's lap. Iza started to pick out a couple of the stickers that weren't coming out right away. "Well, I like her too. And you, of course." She smiled again. "And I'd have to agree with Smuff and say that you make a very good pillow."
Gar was transfixed by Iza and in all of the millions of years he had been around, he couldn't have ever guessed he would be so smitten by a woman like her. He grinned at her as he leaned over and kissed her slowly. He put one hand behind her head to hold her into the long tender kiss until he pulled back. "Thank you, for not being afraid of me. I scare far more people than I friend." he said quietly.
So 'the daughter of Satan' had snagged an angel. Quite honestly, she couldn't complain. Gar was so good to her...it was hard not to be so taken with him. She didn't mind it when he kissed her, and she more than gladly returned that kiss. Even thought it was long, she couldn't help but think that she wouldn't mind kissing him for even longer. "I don't scare easily. And besides, you've never given me reason to be scared of you." Intimidated, maybe, but that had been before she'd gotten to know him. "I should be thanking you too. You like me differences and all. Not everyone does."
"Differences are good." He said as he rang a finger tip over a part of her side where he knew scaled lay beneath all of the layers of clothing. "The same thing, the same definition of beauty, and normal gets so boring after a while. Unfortunately, most beings don't live long enough to figure that out, or take advantage of all that this world offers to you. They are trapped in their own myopic world." he said in a particularly wordy moment that would have made Sioux proud.
Differences were good. Iza had believed that ever since she was a child and had come to love the way she looked. And he made a very valid point. "Exactly." There really wasn't any more to add to that because he was entirely correct. Not to mention that he knew better than she did anyway. Her life thus far was less than a blink of an eye compared to his. "Blonde barbie dolls are no fun. Besides, I like to think I have more to offer than they ever could." She smirked the slightest bit. "You haven't complained yet, so I must be doing something right."
Gar hummed happily and then shrugged. "I can always complain. According to Sioux that was just about all I did, besides, sleep, hump, and smell." he said and wrinkled his nose for effect. "I think she might be jealous that you are getting the 'New and improved, better at hygiene Gar.' or something along those lines." he said with a chuckle. He realized that he kept bringing up Sioux and that probably wasn't going to go over well with the new woman in his life, so he forced himself to shut up about her, and decided to try to stop name dropping her into the conversations. He looked down at Smuff who was busy grooming herself and purring in Iza's lap. "What a strange but wonderful family I have here."
"Are you implying that there's something to complain about? Because I might just be offended." She was joking, of course. Having a little bit of fun never hurt, and the attempt at humor also served to distract from when he mentioned Sioux. It wasn't that she was mad that he did, or anything. It was just...weird. She was friends with Sioux and she'd heard her fair share of what her relationship with Gar had been like. And he still cared about her. It was just an odd position she was in, being in the middle. Still, she did her best just not to think about it. "New and improved better at hygiene Gar, huh? Well, you won't find me complaining." Smuff's purring distracted her for a moment, and she couldn't help but smile down at the puff of white fur snuggled in her lap. "Wonderfully strange. That's the best kind of family, if you ask me."
Gar nodded as he looked out across the field and took in the simplicity of the beauty around them. Plants, weeds, trees, sky, air and sun. He still found such joy in taking in these creations that most humans took for granted. He never tired of looking at, and observing living things. It was a wonderful day so far, and not only did he not want the moment to end, he hoped they would continue for a long time.
