Volunteering Opportunity - NOT!!! (x-posted from my LJ)

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]karlita)

Kel and I had a wonderful time in October at Glorieta for the Emergent Village conference. This group is very liberal, all-inclusive, and some of the conversations we engaged in were "Zen and Christianity", had to do with meditation, I did a massage and ministry class, it is an amazing group that meets every year, most of the members are writers and many are published authors.

While we were at the beautiful retreat center, Glorieta, I met several people who volunteer there every year - they come for 10 weeks - and put in 30 hours of volunteer work a week in exchange for a place to stay and 3 meals a day in the dining hall. It sounded like a wonderful opportunity to both of us - and so I investigated it a little bit more.

I was horrified to find some very rigid "lifestyle" requirements on the website - and no, we will not be going there again, and yes, I am inquiring into some aspects of it with their Human Resources department and I may take it further.

Lifestyle Considerations

LifeWay Christian Resources holds a unique and special nature as a Christian employer.

* Southern Baptist churches have voluntarily given LifeWay a place of influence based upon the values of trust and respect.
* We expect all employees to favorably represent LifeWay by manifesting conduct and actions which project an image consistent with the expressed purpose and mission of LifeWay.

Are you agreeable with this condition? If yes, you will want to press "Yes" below. Otherwise, you may want to press "No" and exit from the application process.

Conduct which brings embarrassment to LifeWay or impedes its credibility with constituents is unacceptable. Conduct or other actions inconsistent with that normally expected of Southern Baptist denominational employees and other Christians are unacceptable. Similarly, conduct or other actions perceived as inconsistent are unacceptable. Examples of such conduct are involvement with alcohol, illegal drugs, pre-marital or extra-marital sex, cohabitation apart from the marriage relationship, homosexuality, and outside interests and pursuits which would normally be considered incompatible with LifeWay's mission.

Consistent with this purpose, LifeWay's policy is to ensure all applicant and employee behavior meets LifeWay's standards of acceptable conduct. As a part of this policy, an individual's current and past conduct is reviewed. During the application process you will be asked if you have or have had conduct that is not consistent with this policy. A "yes" answer does not automatically disqualify you from further consideration for employment, as each individual's circumstances are reviewed.

I emailed the HR department to get some clarity on the "outside interests and pursuits" - I wonder if being an ACLU member or being pro-choice is an issue for them. (insert snark here).

I do not know what my next plans are - and these folks may have an opportunity to open their minds a bit.

The only thing I can say is: What Would Jesus Do?

If Jesus Christ came back today, and walked into their administrative offices, I do believe they would have Security escort him out!!!!!
