Two Cents (cross-posted), an intended letter to the editor of a local paper

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]symwyse)

I never wanted to describe myself as a politically minded person, let alone religiously minded, but as of late, I cannot help but become more conscious of both driving factors. Perhaps it's also due in part to “Blog Against Theocracy” week, or maybe because I just get so tired of watching "breaking news" on every damned channel.

Radicals Fanatics that run the gamut from social, political, and religious extremists are overrunning our country. No they aren't "Islamofasicts", or angry homosexuals who are striving to destroy America, one family at a time. They aren't Goddess-worshiping feminists either. Sadly, this large number of extremist groups comprise themselves of socio-political-religious zealots- the worst kind- and they have tremendous influence and a loud voice in the United States. They seek to end the separation between church and state, outlaw homosexuality, limit the rights of women and minorities, and rewrite the American Dream in their own image.

Our government is under fire; our fellow citizens have been shipped off to other countries like so many toy soldiers, and all for what really, to "ensure democracy" or to annihilate the "threat of Islam"? Our president is under fire, and though I could say much about him, and call him one of many names, I chose to not vote at all during the last election, and thusly gave up my right to complain. Granted he has questionable views, and an even more questionable past, but he is still our president. But once he's out of office, who will replace him? And what of those who do not wish to see him go? His presidency is viewed as a sign from God; just ask any Christian Fundamentalist who has no clue as to what the word fundamentalism even means. It would be these same Fundamentalists, or Dominionists, that would vote for segregation, religious control over our basic human rights, and imposed penalties on even the slightest of offenses to their perceived Christian sensibilities. There is no emphasis on Christ's compassion and mercy, rather the emphasis has been placed on a degenerated concept of a vengeful, unforgiving god who demands much of his followers, a being more akin to a primitive deity.

Perhaps there is more at stake. Perhaps instead of waging war on homosexuality, abortion, women's rights, immigration, and a myriad of other button-pushing issues, we as the American People will wake up and realize that everything we're bitching about is trivial compared to what's really at stake: our very freedom. It isn't about the freedom of religion (or no religion), or speech, or anything else that many of us take for granted for that matter. It is about our freedom to choose, to decide for ourselves without someone else telling you what to do. The battle for freedom is going on in other countries, yet we seem to be ignorant of our own war-torn nation, the fight for freedom that is being waged on our own soil. Dominionists fight against the world tainting the image of a Christian Nation that they believe our forefathers founded. They seek to rewrite history in their own image, wiping out anything that would seem contrary to what actually happened. And really, for what purpose other than to brainwash the very masses. These people who are behind this threat are not stupid, uneducated men and women, they have degrees, they have written books, they have been booked for speaking engagements, seminars, workshops, and interviews. And that is what makes them all the more dangerous, especially when the people that they appeal to could not discern anything for themselves, critical-thinking is the tool of Satan.

Our country would fall into the hands of megalomaniacs that would orchestrate every perceivable threat as a means of controlling the people. This very same desire for control is what led many of our world's dictators, past and present, to do the same. These people would be no different.

If they succeed, what then? Will the scope of their vision turn to other nations, like Sauron's flaming, lidless eye upon the free peoples of Middle Earth? This is not our future, but this is certainly the state of our present.
