Even though the cross will still be available for use for Christian services. And look, Michelle Malkin's involved!

NOTE: I checked out the Save The Cross website and sent these fine youngsters the following note. I really think they have too much time on their hands, and chastised them for their misguidedness:
I honestly don't see why you're doing this - the cross is being removed *solely* for non-religious purposes and will be available for Christian services. What is so horrible about that? We've been doing that at Smith for *decades* and the Christian community is thriving! Are you truly so frightened of any hint that maybe other faith traditions have a place at God's table, and that forcing non-Christians to view a cross may be just plain *rude*????
You need to calm down and do some *real* work for the gospel, like volunteering at a homeless shelter, battered women's agency, or prison ministry. Jesus would be horrified at how you've elevated a symbol above the message of compassion, inclusiveness, and work for the poor and disposed.
I will pray that your minds be enlightened and your hearts opened. Right now your organization represents a profound distortion of the Gospel, and is horrifying to me as a believer and a human being.
