I predicted when the Haggard scandal originally broke that it had the real potential of going thermonuclear--in that other dominionists would likely get caught in the widening scandal. (This is especially true, as the Denver Post has reported that Haggard may have been engaging in gay affairs as early as ten years ago.)

Already, James Dobson has dropped out of the "Dream Team" of "reparation therapists" who will try to "turn Haggard straight", claiming time constraints--which (to me, anyways, as a walkaway) is a sign that either Dobson is scared *he* is going to be snared in or has real doubts about the effectiveness of his "degaying". (Either is possible.)

And the scandal is officially spreading. As it turns out, dominionist leader Lou Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition actively covered up the Haggard scandal along with other dominionist leaders for several months before it broke in the mainstream press:

Then, as if things could not get worse, there was the disgrace of Sheldon's own friend and colleague, Rev. Ted Haggard, the Colorado mega-church leader and president of the National Association of Evangelicals, an even bigger pillar of Republican support on the Christian right. Sheldon disclosed that he and "a lot" of others knew about Haggard's homosexuality "for awhile ... but we weren't sure just how to deal with it."

Months before a male prostitute publicly revealed Haggard's secret relationship with him, and the reverend's drug use as well, "Ted and I had a discussion," explained Sheldon, who said Haggard gave him a telltale signal then: "He said homosexuality is genetic. I said, no it isn't. But I just knew he was covering up. They need to say that."

This is highly revealing on two separate levels:

a) It may be quite obvious now just *why* Dobson bailed. If Haggard is accepting that homosexuality has a genetic component, that pretty much means that "degaying" is *not* going to be effective even in the dominionist sense--because one of the things they harp on is that sexual orientation is a "choice", not a tendency with a strong biological or genetic component (most mainstream scientists take the latter view, especially with documented brain differences in LGBT individuals as compared to straight controls).

b) If it comes out in the mainstream press that Sheldon and others actively protected Haggard from being outed, it could be the end of *their* careers too--and the potential tainting of anyone associated with them (seriously, it could have a domino-like effect--I actually suspected this would happen, in fact).
