Adulterer preferred over lesbian - Australia Family First

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]wyldraven)

Family First refuses preference swap with lesbians

Queensland's Family First Senate candidate John Lewis today said Liberal candidate for Brisbane Ingrid Tall was not getting his party's preferences because she was a lesbian.

Mr Lewis said Ms Tall would not get his preferences because she did not fit the profile of a basic unit of family - which involved a man and a woman.

He made the comments during a heated exchange with Greens Senate candidate Drew Hutton on Brisbane radio 4BC, which he later clarified.

"People have a right of choice of lifestyle, however we are not going to support these people because we don't agree with that lifestyle," Mr Lewis said after the interview.

"We don't think that's unfair."

Mr Lewis' comments come after Family First disciplined one of its workers at Dayboro, in the marginal Brisbane seat of Dickson, for answering "yes" to a question about whether Family First supported lesbians being burned to death.

The Family First Party, backed by the Assemblies of God, also will not swap preferences with parliamentary secretary Warren Entsch, who supports gay marriage.

Mr Hutton said the decision not to preference Dr Tall was a discriminatory, un-Christian action by Family First.

"Ingrid Tall has made no public statements on same-sex marriages or, to my knowledge, any other statements opposed to any of Family First's policies," he said.

"And yet she is not receiving preferences purely because of her sexuality."

Mr Lewis counter-attacked by accusing Mr Hutton of being an anarchist based on a number of published and publicly-available documents which refer to the Greens Senate leader as "a leading Brisbane anarchist".

"Anarchists should not stand for public office when their philosophy is to abolish government, create lawlessness, and cause political disorder," Mr Lewis said.

Family First has said it would swap preferences with Ross Cameron, the Liberal MP for Sydney-based seat of Parramatta who publicly confessed to an affair while his wife was pregnant with twins.

Yeah, the part that really does it for me is that it's apparently fine with Family First if you have an affair while your wife is pregnant, with twins no less.

Now I'll be the first to admit that "swapping preferences" is not something I am particularly clear on. It reads like endorsement. It seems to have something to do with their form of Instant Runoff, and the "how to vote cards" supplied by party members at voting places. (See Wikipedia). Perhaps some of you who live under parliamentary forms of government can clarify that point?

No matter the exact meaning though, my point stands. Be unfaithful to your pregnant wife. We don't mind. But don't you dare love another member of the same sex.

For those who don't know:
The Family First Party is a political party in Australia. Although officially a secular party, it has close links to the Pentecostal movement, in particular the Assemblies of God Church, and its social policies generally mirror conservative Christian values (but not necessarily politically conservative values).
