The Christian Right Goes Back to Bible Boot Camp

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]nebris)

After a study revealed that less than 10% of evangelicals were bible literate, James Dobson's Focus on the Family is desperately taking a two-day multi-media Bible boot camp on the road, selling 'truth' for $179 a seat. )

Barbarians at the gate

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]fragiletender)

After being stunned by the Prairie Muffin manifesto that [info]pretentioustfu posted, I went off and explored some of the author's blog. This was an unfortunate thing to do before breakfast since to my complete horror, she actually advocates the demise of public libraries. I was so shocked that I can still feel my brain reeling inside my skull. I had no idea that these Dominionist idiots don't believe in public libraries. I knew they often challenged books within libraries but I didn't know there was a school of thought that libraries should be shut down altogether or at least not publicly funded.

Barbarians!

"I know that libraries are a sensitive issue because so many of us (with me it’s past tense) use them, but they are not necessary like roads (and airports and mail service)"

Not a necessary? Not frelling necessary? Excuse me while I spit bile for a while. Libraries might not be necessary to brain dead morons who are only interested in living in their self contained little world but the rest of us are educated and civilised beings. I consider libraries a damn site more useful and necessary than airports, thanks all the same.

What about the poor kids who don't have access to books or who have parents who don't think that books and reading are important. It's all very well to say that parents should be providing that stuff for their kids but not all parents do. Of course, I'm a wishy washy liberal who believes in government hand outs (because we do, you know, pay TAXES for them), so what do I know?

If you don't want to pay taxes, have anything to do with the government or take part in the world in any way, then knock yourselves out. Go live in your weird little enclaves and don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. You won't be missed. Just stop trying to influence and control the rest of us.

Frankly, I think these people are just bloody evil and they can sod right off. To paraphrase: you can have my library card when you pry it from my cold dead hands!

Sigh, I've just read that this woman doesn't believe that women should vote. What on earth can you do with these people? I can't even begin to have conversations with them, they're so far away from me mentally that it's almost like they're a different species. I am completely staggered and dumbfounded, I really am.

The Postal Service of the Saved

"Do you know someone who is in danger of being "left behind" because of a sinful life? Imagine if you could write a letter to a friend or loved one after the Great Day of Reckoning. Maybe a message to your family telling them to trust in God, and that everything will be okay. Perhaps you would leave instructions to care for your pets after your departure. It could be that your message is the light that opens a sinner's eyes to the Glory of God and allows them entrance to Heaven during the trials before the Second Coming. This is where the Post-Rapture Post comes in."

Neanderthal DNA and Biblical Literalism

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]1400scale)

At first, I didn’t think this would be particularly dominionist-related (more of a “couple degrees of separation”-type thing), until I was reminded that dominionism itself is dependent on, among other things, strict Biblical literalism, PARTICULARLY with regards to the creation account of Genesis. That being said, here’s something that might just make some headway with the more soft-core authoritarian-types regarding that issue if presented correctly (not to mention the evolution debate), and persuade some to be more open to reason (some of you might already be aware of it, at least a bit, anyway).

Florida Supreme Court Rejects Wiccan Tax Challenge over Satanic Bible

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]jamie_miller)

Did this get published here already? If so, I don't remember it.

http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2006/nov/06110304.html

Erik Stanley, Chief Counsel of Liberty Counsel, stated, "The Florida Supreme Court did the right thing in dismissing this case. The Wiccans' challenge was nothing more than a vindictive lawsuit. The Wiccans would not have benefited at all if they won because they were seeking to have all religious publications taxed, including their own. Florida's sales tax exemption statute is constitutional and we are pleased that this vindictive challenge to the statute has been dismissed.
