The scary thing is that I kinda agree with them, most of popular culture *is* complete trash. I'm not interested in their alternative, though! That's a fun choice....sheep hypnotized by trashy consumerist culture or sheep hypnotized by religion? Well you know what they say....religion was the opiate of the masses, but now it's TV! Choose your poison...

But I love the declining percentage of biblical Christians, that fills my heart with devilish glee. :)

Evangelicals Fear the Loss of Their Teenagers

Despite their packed megachurches, their political clout and their increasing visibility on the national stage, evangelical Christian leaders are warning one another that their teenagers are abandoning the faith in droves. Read more... )

Perhaps there is hope?

"GOP's Hold on Evangelicals Weakening" -- Today's Washington Post

"Even a small shift in the loyalty of conservative Christian voters such as Sunde could spell trouble for the GOP this fall. In 2004, white evangelical or born-again Christians made up a quarter of the electorate, and 78 percent of them voted Republican, according to exit polls. But some pollsters believe that evangelical support for the GOP peaked two years ago and that what has been called the "God gap" in politics is shrinking.

A nationwide poll of 1,500 registered voters released yesterday by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found that 57 percent of white evangelicals are inclined to vote for Republican congressional candidates in the midterm elections, a 21-point drop in support among this critical part of the GOP base."

Luis Palau

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]exotic_princess)

Those of us in Houston have seen the ads on tv, on signs in street medians around town, everywhere. CityFest Houston is coming to town this weekend.

I don't know if I blinked and missed it, but I had no idea who Luis Palau was or that this was a "Christian Revivial" festival until I read the news today.

I did some digging, and even found a d_c link in google from last year where dogemperor mentions he is 'virulently dominionist.' So that takes care of question one LOL

Here's what I found:

His wiki article

local tv news article about the festival

Statement of faith from his personal website

What is CityFest Houston?

Some background, including the following (towards the bottom of the page):

Palau is a member of COR (Coalition on Revival), a Reconstructionist/Dominionist organization dedicated to a social gospel/activism agenda that proposes to impose Biblical standards (e.g., Old Testament law) on unbelieving peoples and institutions.

I honestly had never heard of him or taken note of him before this. You can't drive around Houston without seeing signs for it, though... and correct me if I'm wrong, but I've not heard any advertisement mention that it's a Christian thing.

Note that I'm not knocking "Christian Festivals," I just wanted to do some background research on the guy holding it.

Do conservative Christians have a predilection towards pedophilia?

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]catvincent)

Americablog raises this question today;
In these dire times for America's youth one must ask: Are conservative Christians genetically pre-disposed towards coddling pedophiles?

It may sound like bigotry, but facts are facts. These conservative Christian men all knew a long time ago about Foley's "overly friendly" attempts to befriend young children. They all had a chance to stop Foley before he sinned again, and they didn't. They're all Republicans. And they're all Christians.

Need more proof of how conservative Christians coddle child predators?

Did anyone else notice how many days it took the religious right to condemn Foley's actions and the actions of the Republican leadership in covering-up Foley's crimes? Foley's sickness was announced publicly on Thursday. The religious right didn't respond until the following Monday. What - they were too busy preparing for Columbus Day? Apparently man-on-boy sex isn't a big deal to conservative Christians so long as the man and boy (and their enablers) are all Republicans.

And when the conservative Christian groups finally did speak out, they were more preoccupied with promoting their anti-gay agenda than they were the health of the children and the sins of their predators and enablers.

America must ask itself why so many conservative Christians are involved in this scandal? And why so many conservative Christian groups were so slow to condemn the sexual abuse of our children?

Perhaps this Foley scandal could make people realise just what vile hypocrites the Dominionists are - and be the final straw which breaks them.

(I've posted a lot about this case on my own LJ recently - especially here.)
