Who: Scotty + Archie
What: Talking
Where: Archie's office
When: Saturday afternoon
Rating: Trigger warnings probably

Never before had Scotty spoken with a therapist, even if this was just a school one. No one had thought to send him to one when his parents had died because he had been so little; the most he had gotten was his social worker saying how sorry she was and that she would do her best to find him a good family to take care of him. Except they didn't take care of him -- did the opposite, actually -- and by the time he really felt like maybe he should be talking to someone, he was too afraid to. The bullying and the abuse led him to less than healthy ways of dealing with his problems, and he was sure even taking bus rides was a less than ideal way of working through his problems. He was too afraid to speak out though. He had learned to bottle everything up and stay silent.

Dalton had been a reprieve from life in Cairo. Dalton, he thought everything would be better. He made friends, he was able to draw, and he was away from the abuse. He even got adopted, though not by his first choice; no, Mr Johnson died, and all Scotty received were more apologies and Gabe tolerating him to snuggle up a bit more often.

So it seemed weird that he would speak to a therapist now, when he was so close to summer vacation, yet he had to admit that he was curious about the details of his file. That was all they would talk about, Scotty assured himself as he knocked on the man's door. They had nothing else to discuss. Scotty was nothing special.

Archie had to admit, he wasn't really expecting Scotty to show up. He had the boy's file on hand in a drawer, in case he did, but since Scotty had skipped the last time they were going to meet, he wasn't putting much stock in the second meeting.

Nevertheless, when there was a knock on his door, Archie looked up with a smile. "Come on in! Door's open!" He wasn't sure who it was, but he had some open time today.

In Scotty peeked, his hand gripping the door frame shyly. He wasn't sure what he had been expecting this shrink to look at, but Archie certainly didn't fit what he had thought. Therapists were supposed to be old, with beards and glasses, and not like- like this, this handsome man that was smiling up at him from behind his desk.

"Um, hi," Scotty said. "I'm Scotty- we talked online?"

"Scotty! Hey!" Archie pushed away from his desk, spinning his chair around and offering the boy a grin as he subtly sized him up. The boy was small, clearly nervous. Archie would keep his distance for now, let the boy get comfortable in his presence. "I was wondering if you'd show up today. I'm Archie, or Mr. Kennedy if you'd prefer. Please, have a seat..." He gestured toward the assortment of chairs in the room, the hard plastic one by his desk, the softer armchairs by the windows.

Scotty stepped inside warily and shut the door behind him. As much as he hated having one more blockade in his escape plan, he didn't want anyone to hear what they were talking about in here. Even if it was just about his file. Gripping his sleeves tightly, Scotty took a seat as far from Archie as he could get.

"Um, sorry about before," Scotty said. "Something came up."

The excuse sounded weak to his own ears, but everything he said seemed to. He swallowed, fidgeting with his sleeves more. He swallowed thickly and spoke up again: "So, um- my file?"

"It's all right, I understand," Archie said with a dismissive wave of his hand. "End of the year, everything piles up. We didn't have an official appointment or anything like that."

When Scotty asked about his file, Archie gave a nod and pulled open his drawer, retrieving the folder. He got to his feet and crossed over to Scotty, offering it at arm's length to keep his distance. "Want something to drink while you're reading? I've got teas and hot chocolates..."

"No," Scotty said, edging away from Archie after taking the folder. A belated "thanks though" came after Archie moved away. His fingers skimmed the cover of the folder but he didn't open it quite yet. As much as he wanted to absorb everything within, Scotty had some questions for Archie first.

But first the other man had to sit down. Strangers always made Scotty feel nervous (another sign that he should've seen a therapist years ago) and this one, however friendly he may seem, would do little to change that.

"Have you read it?" he asked.

"Suit yourself," Archie said, moving to sit in the other armchair across from Scotty, though he leaned back a little to give the boy more space.

"I have, yes. I like to get to know the students I'm working with." Archie nodded toward the file with a little smile. "There's nothing scandalous in there, don't worry. Some previous teachers of yours have left notes, your school records, a bit of your history..." Anything that had involved Scotty's caseworker had been documented and filed, so, like with Harris, Scotty's file had a history of his moves.

"What'd they say?" Scotty asked. "Did Mr. Johnson write anything?"

If there was a note hidden away in here from that man, handwritten or typed up, then Scotty wanted to know before stumbling on it. It may have been over a year now since the man's death, but it still felt fresh to Scotty; he doubted he would ever get over it. Mr Johnson had been the first adult that Scotty had really trusted since his parents had died.

And, sure, maybe he was supposed to trust Archie, because he was a fellow teacher. But he was still a stranger, and people always remained strangers until Scotty was sure that nothing would happen to him. Though if they would be working together- that was what Archie said, right? They'd be working together? But for what? This was a one-time thing. They were only going over Scotty's file and that was it.

"There is a note from Harry Johnson, yes," Archie said. "It's, uh, talking about your art, I think? The notes are mostly just little comments: you're very quiet, a nice student. Mr. Johnson had high praise of your artistic talents. He seemed very fond of you, just in the way he worded things."

Scotty nodded and swallowed as he finally opened up the file. The contents were as Archie had described: teachers commenting on Scotty's grades and behavior in class. The majority of them said that he was quiet and didn't interact much with the others in his class, and a few spoke of his grades, but only Mr Johnson was positive about them.

He didn't know how long he stared down at the familiar handwriting before turning the page. And there, much to his surprise, were his records from McKinley, as well as information on his past home and-

"Harris?" Scotty read. He looked back up at Archie. "Does his file mention me too?"

Archie remained quiet as Scotty perused the contents of his file, making a mental note at the abnormally long time he spent on Mr. Johnson's note.

"Ah... for confidentiality reasons, I can't really talk about the contents of other students' files," Archie said apologetically. "But if you're referring to the reference in there," he gestured to the folder, though he kept his hands within the bounds of his own chair, "about the time you lived with Harris, then yes, things like that would appear in both of your files."

Scotty nodded and perused the rest of the folder. Aside from a brief mention of his parents and hometown, there was nothing of interest on the last couple of pages. He realized as he shut the folder just how much he missed people, though he forced himself not to think any further on it as he handed the folder back.

"Thanks," Scotty said, chewing on his thumbnail. "It's, um, it's been awhile since I've seen their names."

"You're welcome," Archie said, accepting the file back from Scotty. "Would you like a copy of anything from here? Perhaps Mr. Johnson's note?" Archie opened the file, flipping through to that letter from the late art teacher.

"Whose names? Your parents'?"

Scotty tensed at Mr Johnson's name and slowly shook his head. It wouldn't do him any good, he thought to himself as he continued to bite nervously at his nail. All it would do is make him more depressed because he would have the reminder that, once upon a time, he had been a good student. And now- terrible didn't even begin to cover it.

"Them and Mr Johnson," Scotty said. "It's kind of weird. They're dead but their names are right there." He blushed and lowered his hand finally. "Sorry, um. I'm not making any sense."

"It does make sense," Archie said, closing the file and setting it on the little coffee table he had set up between the armchairs. "It's similar to the feeling people have when they research their family histories, only... closer." He was quiet for a bit, letting his eyes drop to the file rather than the boy across from him. "How long has it been?" He knew the answer technically, from what Scotty's file held, but he wondered how Scotty would answer.

"Um, nine years," Scotty said. Longer than he had been alive for, came the sudden realization, and he twisted his sleeve as anxiety washed over him. Eight years without a parental figure and just a few short months with one before that, too, was taken from him. Maybe he was cursed. Maybe Jack and Pat would be the next to go. But Scotty only had a year to go and then he was a legal adult; he would be like Harris, with only friends to rely on.

Only he didn't have that either. Aaron and Luke were both leaving, and Tak- Tak had his own friends. Gabe was still furious with him, probably, and despite what others said, Scotty certainly didn't feel all that close to the other boys in his year. He really was alone, he thought to himself.

"How long do you think their names'll be in print for?" Scotty asked. "I mean, everything gets thrown away, right? This file- it'll be gone once I graduate, and- I won't be around forever either, you know? So it's like- they're going to die again, because no one will remember them."

"Today, you can look up records from hundreds of years ago," Archie said, gesturing to his computer. "As we move forward in time, more and more records are digitized and archived. Newspaper articles, yearbooks, school records, birth announcements... all these things are saved these days, Scotty. If this physical file ends up destroyed, their names will continue on, somewhere. Your name will continue on. Two hundred years from now, your descendants will be able to look you up when they study their own genealogies. They'll look up your parents. As long as we have civilization, I'm sure, your names will survive."

Archie sat back a little, twisting the band around his finger. "But as you said is also true. When someone is forgotten, it is like a second death. But those you love, Scotty, those people you really adore, you never forget them, and so they never die that second death while you remain vigilant."

"I'm the only one left though," Scotty said, gripping his hair now. Archie just wasn't getting it. "I can stay vigilant all my life, but they're still going to wind up forgotten once I die- and isn't it unhealthy, to think about dead people so much? Everyone said I was being depressing for talking about dying, and-"

He stopped there, knowing he had said too much. He had been fortunate so far in that Jack and Pat hadn't asked him what the journal had been about, and none of his teachers had made any comments about him being quieter than he had before New York; now he had to ruin it all, by bringing it up himself. His grip on his hair tightened as he silently berated himself: stupid, he was so fricking stupid.

"It's no more unhealthy than to think about apples so much," Archie said carefully, watching Scotty's reactions with some concern. "It's when those thoughts interfere with your life as a whole, or start to make you act in negative, destructive ways, that it becomes unhealthy." He leaned forward a little, his eyes concerned. "Scotty? Are those thoughts interfering with your life? Are you thinking about yourself dying?"

The hand tightened its grip as Scotty stared down at his lap. Those specific thoughts of him dying weren't interfering with his life, no, but the thoughts that lead up to it - the demoralizing, deconstructing, destructive thoughts of his that constantly said how stupid and useless he was -- were. That wasn't what Archie asked though.

"No," Scotty said shortly. "No I... those thoughts aren't doing anything."

Just about every mental alarm bell Archie had was ringing as he watched how Scotty tightened and tense, shrinking down on himself. He couldn't let this boy out of the room without finding out just how bad things were for him.

"What sort of thoughts are?" Archie asked quietly.

"Nothing," Scotty insisted. He needed to get out of here. He had to- but leaving now would seem suspicious, and Archie may say something, and- Scotty just had to convince him that he was fine, so Archie wouldn't feel the need to investigate any further. Because he was fine. He didn't need anyone to say otherwise.

"I just- I miss them," Scotty tried. "Everyone is going home to families and friends, and I'm just- I'm going with strangers."

His mind raced as he thought of how Archie would interpret it. Feeling anxious about spending a summer with adopted parents was understandable, right? It had to be. And Archie couldn't exactly say otherwise, because he couldn't have ever have gone through what Scotty was currently going through.

"No!" Scotty quickly back-tracked. He didn't mean to get the Barrys in trouble! He liked them, seriously! "No- I've known them for a couple of years, since I came here, but- they still feel like teachers! Just ones that sometimes cook for me."

Scotty blushed. "I didn't mean to say they were weird. They- we just don't know each other very well yet."

But then, no one really knew Scotty. They knew parts but not the whole picture. Not even Aaron did.

Such a blatant lie, but no one needed to know that; not Archie, nor anyone else would need to know that Scotty wasn't as happy as people may think. And certainly no one needed to know that Scotty was hardly ever happy anymore. No, instead of any positive emotion, he just felt lesser degrees of depression.

He carried on. "I don't really need help. With anything. Um, I'm not good at English, but Aaron helps me, so- I mean, aside from that though, I'm fine."

He just needed to sound normal. That was all.

Archie sat back a little, pressing his lips together as he looked the boy over. "Scotty... with all due respect, I can't believe that. Can we... can we try something else? I understand you don't know me, and you really can't trust me without knowing me. I know there are things you aren't going to tell me, no matter how I ask. But can I ask for no lies, or half-truths from you? If I ask you something you don't feel comfortable answering, you can say just that--'I don't want to answer.' Scotty pressed his lips together. This game was nothing new to him. He had played this before, and it never went well for him. Saying he wouldn't answer was how so many people learned about his past. At least no one had asked about Harris yet, or else Harris would ensure that Scotty was really miserable. He really shouldn't play it with someone like Archie.

But Archie would be suspicious if Scotty declined, and Scotty wanted to fall off of Archie's radar as quickly as possible. He could just answer a few questions and then make up an excuse about going to class or a club or somewhere with Aaron.

"I'm not keeping any secrets," Scotty said. "And I haven't been lying."

"I'm bad with words!" Scotty exclaimed, his pulse racing faster and harder by the second. This isn't how he wanted his afternoon to go at all; hadn't his original plan been to just read the folder? How did his plans go so astray so easily? Archie was more dangerous than he appeared, Scotty thought as he began to grip his hair again. He didn't understand how someone like him could mess up so badly. Useless - he couldn't even follow a simple plan.

"Look- it's normal, isn't it? Of course I miss my parents, and- I don't know Da- Mr Barry like I did my parents," Scotty tried to explain. "And- I am happy. I just- seeing their names made me miss them, so- I'm fine."

"Scotty, it's all right," Archie said, holding up his hands. "It's okay... here." He got up and moved over to the kettle, flipping it on. "Chocolate or tea?" Scotty looked like he was on the verge of a panic attack, so Archie wanted to give him some time to calm down and regroup.

"Tea," Scotty said, his time spent with the Barry's slowly transforming him into a tea drinker. See, he thought to himself, the Barry's weren't strangers. But Scotty was still stupid, because now he had to stay here longer to wait for the tea and drink it.

He continued to tug on his hair lightly as he watched Archie bustle around. His mind frantically searched for a way to get out of here without anymore damage, but nothing came to mind - at least until he remembered how he had gotten out of all of the other dangerous situations.

"If you had a file on me, based on just this- what would it say?" Scotty asked suddenly. Maybe he was freaking out over nothing. Maybe Archie hadn't picked up on anything.

"How do you take it?" Archie asked, selecting a pair of tea bags and preparing two mugs.

"You mean if I were to write down my impression of you just from our chat today?" Archie frowned thoughtfully at the mugs, trying to think of how he could be honest and tactful. He didn't want to scare Scotty away, but he couldn't say that the boy was perfectly fine. "I'd say... Scotty Atchinson is a curious but lonely boy. The ordeals he has endured have left him," scared, timid, nervous, "apprehensive and withdrawn." The kettle clicked off and Archie poured their teas, adding a bit of sugar and some creamer (a poor substitute for milk, but Archie couldn't exactly add a fridge to his office) to both. "However, at his core, I see a very resilient and creative spirit, one that could thrive if nurtured." He offered Scotty one of the mugs and a little smile. "Do you think that sounds like you?"

Scotty accepted the mug with a quietly murmured "thanks" and curled his fingers around it. As he brought it closer to his chest, the steam from the liquid warmed his face and he inhaled quietly; it felt good and relaxing, almost, which made him feel weird about even having tea right now. He shouldn't feel safe right now. Feeling safe meant making stupid decisions and saying stupider things.

"No," Scotty said. "I'm not very creative, really. And- I don't thrive. Ever."

Art school had shown him that. Perhaps if Mr Johnson were still around, Scotty may have been able to, but he was gone and- well, Scotty just didn't thrive.

There were many, many reasons why Archie offered his students a hot drink almost any time they came to see him. Sharing a hot drink could be a bonding experience. It could make students open up. It gave them something to be distracted by, something to hold on to. It gave them an excuse to stall if they needed to, or, at worst, a distraction if they knocked it over. But it also, almost universally, provoked feelings of safety. Very few people with bad intentions would offer you a hot drink.

As Archie took his seat across from Scotty again, he noted the slight improvement in the other boy's posture. A sliver of that nervous fear seemed to have melted away with the acceptance of the tea. That was good. Now Archie needed to make sure he didn't bring it back. "Have you ever been nurtured?" he asked before taking a sip of his own drink.

Scotty blinked in surprise at the question. Nurtured? What was that even supposed to mean? Nurturing was for like small animals, not for people. It sounded like such a strange and foreign concept that Archie could probably read the look of confusion on Scotty's face and know that, no, Scotty hadn't been. Nurturing -- it sounded like a term for one of his classes in school.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Scotty asked. He cradled his cup but didn't drink from it yet.

Archie closed his eyes a little after registering that look of confusion. He had suspected as much, but it hurt to see it confirmed. "Why are you asking?" Scotty asked, ducking his head down. Archie had to already know the answer. Why else would he be asking? No, he was positive that Archie knew and just wanted Scotty to admit it himself. That way, he wouldn't have to lie and say it was based purely on guesses.

Because of course Scotty hadn't felt that in years. People liked his art, yes, but that was about it. And he wasn't even a good artist. There really wasn't all that much to him. Nothing of value and certainly nothing to be nurtured or cherished.

Scotty blinked at Archie. So it was all Scotty's fault then? It made sense, he supposed -- he did mess up more often than he succeeded. And he couldn't blame teachers for him failing to learn anything. If he paid attention more, or studied harder, then Scotty would be thriving.

"I just- I haven't done enough," Scotty said. "Nurturing isn't that important. It- I can thrive on my own. I'm just not good enough to do that."

"Oh no," Archie said, shaking his head. "Nurturing is vital, Scotty. Experiments have been done, with infants. They are provided for: food, drink, shelter, but if denied nurturing, they... well, they deflate. They aren't as responsive as nurtured babies, they aren't as energetic, they aren't as... as alive. Scotty..." Archie sat up, then leaned forward a little toward the boy. "Scotty, without that feeling of being loved and cared for in your life, barely scraping by is about the best you can do. You cannot, you physically cannot be a happy, well-rounded individual if you aren't being nurtured at all. And that is absolutely not a short-coming on your part, but on those who are supposed to be nurturing you, your foster parents, your friends, your..."

Archie's eye was caught by the folder and he gave a little thoughtful frown. "Tell me, Scotty, please tell me honestly... were you happier when you lived with Harris?" From what he knew about Harris and how Harris treated the younger boy, Harris would have nurtured Scotty, if only a little, if only in a limited amount. With some people, though, indeed, with most people, just a little bit was all they needed to start growing.

The question would have been fair, had Scotty not promised Harris that he wouldn't talk about when they were together. But- if it was confidential? and it wouldn't get back to Harris? And if it meant making Archie less suspicious-

"Yeah," Scotty said. "He was like my brother- and I've always been an only child, so it was nice to have a big brother for a little bit. But we're not close anymore, so it's um. It's no use talking about it."

"But see, Scotty, that's my point." Archie balanced his mug on his knee, both hands still cradled around the tea. "When someone cared, you felt better. You did better. It has nothing to do with you doing enough, but with how people are connecting with you. I know it may sound silly, but I think... I would like to try to work with you this next year with making those friends, those connections. Do you have anyone helping you adjust to your new living situation with the Barrys, or were the three of you just thrown together?"

"Mr Johnson had been, but-" Scotty began. He pressed his lips together and worried his fingers through his hair. Archie was still so very wrong about everything. He was a kid, of course he was happier back then. And, okay, so he didn't have someone close anymore, the way Harris had been, but not many people did.

All that aside, it just sounded so incredibly selfish of Scotty to want to make friends in order to better himself.

"I'm, um. I'm fine. Really. I don't need help making friends," Scotty stammered.

"I'm sorry about what happened with Mr. Johnson," Archie said quietly. "Bad timing is the curse of the universe. But has anyone been helping the three of you after that? Adoption is a monumental step in anyone's life, Scotty, whether it be the adopter or the adoptee. If a professional isn't helping you, it's not going to go smoothly or comfortably for any of you." If Archie could at least get Scotty help there, with his family, he suspected a lot of Scotty's life would come around. If Scotty felt he had two fathers who loved and supported him...

"Are you offering?" Scotty asked; it may have taken him awhile, but he finally understood that maybe Archie was offering himself. It made sense and would be a lot easier that way -- no awkward drives to a neutral setting, no awkward conversations with someone that was being paid by the hour -- but it would still be awkward. Archie would know so much, and Scotty hated that idea.

He never should have bothered with getting his file.

"It's... I'm not specifically trained in that particular area of counseling," Archie said slowly, "though I do know a bit about it. I'd probably be better than nothing at all, though not as good as a professional, and I do have the advantage of living and working with you and your family. If you and your family think it would help, I'd be happy to offer my services, to the best of my abilities."

"But you don't want to work with me, right?" Scotty asked, because he needed this to be clarified. If he knew he was safe, he could leave and not worry about Archie. But if Archie thought Scotty needed it, and he said something to Pat or Jack-

He leaned forward to put his untouched cup of tea onto Archie's desk and settled back into his seat.

"I do want to work with you," Archie corrected. "I'm not the perfect person for the job, but you do already know me and I'm on hand. If you think I'll be able to help, I'd be happy to do my best. If not, I'd be happy to help you find someone better."
