Who: Caleb Kennedy & OPEN Tak Avalon
What: Shooting hoops and quelling boredom
Where: Basketball court
When: Morning, December 3rd
Rating: SFW

So far, Caleb's week had gone well. He soon discovered that the curriculum at Dalton was more fast-paced and challenging than it had been at his old school. While that seemed at first to be a little daunting, he'd found the challenge of keeping up rather enthralling. It meant that he had to work a lot harder than he had before but he got an odd sense of fulfillment out of it that he hadn't experienced before. But as good as classes were, it was what happened out of school hours that Caleb had enjoyed the most. On his first day, he had searched out the sports coach and signed up for both basketball and football, hoping to be an asset to both teams. It seemed that his first day trials for both had gone well and he was confident that he'd end up having a place on both. Seeing as he was new, that could only mean good things.

It was on Saturday morning that he found himself on the court. He still had a bit of homework to do but he figured that it could wait. He hadn't had a proper chance to test out the facilities yet, so he made that his priority for the day. After dressing in track bottoms, a hoodie, and a vest, he laced his runners and picked up his basketball before heading outside. Once out there, he removed his hoodie and set it to the side, beginning to bounce the ball on the spot for a few moments before dribbling it towards the basket. Stopping and quickly lining up, he tossed it and grinned as he hit his mark. Perfect.

As usual, Tak spent his mornings running. The morning looking like it may take a turn for the worse he figured the indoor track would be his best bet. After all he'd made a promise not not get sick or harm himself and sectionals were too close to risk anything of the sort! After throwing on his clean running gear he'd set out with his iPod as usual and had only paused when he saw one of the new transfer students shooting his basketball.

Watching the ball ring perfectly he grinned and gave a cheer, clapping with a more mischievous look than he'd word previously. Wasn't this boy the one Raf had shown around? They'd talked on the journal's if Tak recalled correctly but from the distance he couldn't be sure. Then again, how many transfer boys had come in so close to end of term? "Whooo! You sunk it!"

Caleb had believed himself to be alone, which meant that he was startled when he heard a voice. Turning instantly and letting the ball bounce off to the side, he smiled almost nervously as the newcomer clapped and cheered. He didn't recognise the boy and so was able to surmise that he was either a sophomore he hadn't met yet or he was in another grade. The only way to know was to approach him, and so Caleb did just that.

Moving over to the other boy, Caleb flicked his bangs from out of his eyes before grinning. "Thanks," he said once he was close enough to be heard, "I had no idea anyone else would be out here so early." Even though it wasn't the break of dawn any more, it was still early for a weekend. Caleb had assumed that most people would still be asleep.

Watching the other boy approach, Tak made extra care to remove his earphones less he be counted rude. Grinning in return he tilted his head to the side as Caleb spoke and chuckled a little at his words. "You're quite welcome that was some shot. You must be boss in geometry!"

It was true, most of the boys their age usually would sleep in on a Saturday, and Tak would have been happy to had his body not demanded it's normal morning run. Sundays were his sleep in days, well, beyond waking up to Benji moving about the room before he left for mass. "Ah well, you can usually find a few track members roaming the campus in the early hours. It's a good time to think and stuff. I was on my way when I saw you make that shot. You're really good."

Unable to stop a grin as the compliments kept on coming, Caleb shrugged the words away. "Not bad," he said casually, "Basketball as a sport is a lot more fun than sitting around solving problems though."

Listening closely as the other boy relaying information to him, Caleb nodded slowly. "I know what you mean," he confessed, not being a stranger to random runs. He much preferred to work on his game though. Another compliment was enough to add a little colour to his cheeks, and he found himself attempting to repress a grin. "Thanks," he said again, not entirely sure what else to say, "Uhhh...I don't know your name. Sorry." It really was a curse of being the new kid.

"Modest." Tak grinned, shaking his though he agreed about playing the game rather than the math behind it.

"Huh? Oh, sorry." Tak laughed not used to introducing himself to people. He was normally known by reputation or through his friends. Being loud and falling off just about everything on campus did give one a certain kind image. But he was glad for the opportunity to tell the other boy who he was. "I'm Tak, Tak Avalon."

He offered his hand as he came close enough for a shake. Not meaning to stay very long but refused to be rude once more when introducing himself. "Nice to meet you--?"

Looking down at the hand offered to him for a moment, Caleb took it and shook. "Caleb Kennedy," he replied, smiling at the other boy. He wanted to question Tak's name, for it was rather unusual. He kept any comments to himself though. He didn't want to say anything that might cause the conversation to turn uncomfortable or strange. He was, after all, still trying to find his way and fit in.

Tak returned the smile though the thought crossed his mind a moment later at the strangeness of his nick name some might find. Most of the staff called him by his nickname, all of the student body did, and it was strange to introduce himself any other way. After a firm shake with the other boy he took the proper distance between them and spoke with a small grin beginning to form. "To be honest, my name is Thackery, and only a few people call me that so it's a hard habit to break calling myself anything but Tak."

He shrugged, then his grin returning to the polite smile as he shifted the conversation after a moment. "You're the guy Raf was showing around right? He's mentioned you a bit I think."

The background to the name was helpful. For some reason it made Caleb smile. "That's cool," he said, finding the information rather intriguing. Tak was an interesting nickname, and Thackery was a curious (though very cool) name to begin with. "I'll make sure to remember Tak then," he continued, sensing that the other boy didn't really like his given name all that much.

At the mention of Raf, Caleb felt his stomach lurch slightly. He knew that his smile had brightened and that he probably looked more alert, which Tak would obviously not fail to notice. "Yeah, that's me," he said happily, refraining from asking what Raf had said about him. He didn't want to seem overly eager, though he was sure that he had already been way too obvious.

Indeed it did not go unnoticed, Tak grinning as he made little notes of how obvious the other boy seemed excited at the mention of Raf. Perhaps it was a sort of upper class men attention thing? Maybe he was crushing on Raf. Either wouldn't surprise the blonde boy much as it'd happened quite a bit. Raf was quite a popular guy and he couldn't blame them. "Haha, I guess he's left an impression on you then. Can't blame you, Raf is a charmer."

How could Tak not tease? Truth be told, Raf had mentioned Caleb in passing at a lunch, and he'd have to tease the other boy when he saw him later. There were already jokes that half of Chopp was in love with him anyway. "You like it here then? Raf said something about you loving the tour a lot."

Way, way too obvious. Although he had heard many times that Dalton was safe from such things as homophobic bullying, Caleb still wasn't entirely comfortable with everything. Tak hadn't given off that sort of impression but Caleb couldn't be too careful. He was now hardwired to react in a cautious manner, and so he mentally scolded himself for being so eager.

Ignoring the heat in his face and the squirming in his stomach, he nodded almost stiffly as he forced a smile. "Uhhh, it was fun," he said, trying his best to sound casual, "It's a nice place and he was a good guide." Biting his bottom lip briefly, Caleb moved to fold his arms across his chest before continuing, "It's...different here. Better."

Caleb's change in demeanor did not go unnoticed. While Tak was not the most observant of people he did pick up the change in the boy's smile. Had it not been for the previous smile being more natural the blonde boy surely would have missed it. A small pang of guilt running across his eyes Tak's grin faded softly into a more subtle look. "Gunna take a stab here and say the last school you were at wasn't too nice?"

The words having left his mouth before he could censor them Tak brought a hand to the side of his face and sighed in his own ignorance. "Ugh, I'm sorry. I have tendency to run away at the mouth. I'd be dead if I were a cat I guess." Lowering his hand he shook his head, "'M sorry, Caleb. I didn't mean to-- bleh. 'M just, sorry. I didn't mean to make it all..." He gestured with his hands then, unable to come up with the proper word in that moment.

Clearly, he was still being painfully obvious. Caleb didn't really mind answering such questions, even if they had come out of the blue. "Yeah, it wasn't awesome," he said, his tone now strained and somber. Truthfully, he'd never really talked about what had happened at his old school with anyone and he wasn't sure he was ready to yet.

"You don't have to apologize," he then muttered, scuffing the toe of his shoe on the ground before looking up at Tak. With a smile that was a lot smaller than those previous, he shrugged. "It's no big deal," he went on to say, "I doubt I'm the only one, huh?"

Tak nodded slowly as small smile formed to mimic other boy's. "Well, I dunno if it's a big deal or not I guess that'd be up to you. A couple of guys have had it rough before transferring here, yeah." The blonde paused then, a frown peaking from the corner of his lips a moment before he spoke again. "I know it can be kinda weird being the new kid and all, went through it last year but Dalton's got a lot good people."

He wasn't very good at recovering from his usual verbal blunders. Normally Ron or Mocchi would fix a situation for him, even Evan had a better mastery over words than he did. A funny thought as he could sing just fine but failed so terrible when it came to speaking at times. "This school is pretty cool, I mean, it's school so it's not all fun and games. But it's got a lot more to offer than other places. Well, at least from where I've been. I dunno, there might be a Dalton the next state over." He chuckled then, "Maybe there's a whole chain of them like McDonalds or something."

Caleb knew that he couldn't have been the only one. Dalton's zero tolerance bullying policy was the main thing that had drawn him here, so it would make sense that such a thing would be true for other people like him. It came as something of a relief that Tak understood what it was like to be the new kid, especially seeing as he appeared to be so upbeat and happy. That could have just been the way he was but surely the school and its environs must have contributed to that? It made him believe that perhaps he could be as happy one day.

Nodding once Tak had finished, Caleb offered him a weak smile. "I don't doubt it," he said, the hand folded against his body coming out in order to rub at his bicep as he kept his arms crossed, "I don't think there's another place quite like it though."

"Yeah, we're pretty lucky here." The blonde concluded after a moment of thought. Not seeing a change in the other boy's body language, at least none to his oblivious eye, and Tak figured it was just about time for him to go on his run. At least, after he invited the other boy as he had the rest of the student body. Perhaps an in person invitation would make him feel more welcome. It'd made him feel more at home when his friends had first invited him to events and such so how Tak not do the same?

"Listen, I dunno what your plans are for Christmas break or anything. But theres this fundraiser Christmas thing the sixteenth through the eighteenth a the Nationwide Children's Hospital. A bunch of us are going down there to put on a show, read to the kids, help out with whatever they need us, you know, give back I guess. If you don't have any plans or anything, you're more then welcome to join us if ya like. I know a lot of the guys are leaving soon as break begins but...the offers there if you happen upon some spare time." He smiled sincerely then, it wasn't a big secret Tak had been asking most of the boys to join them. While a few of them had, most had declined due to previous arrangements. Which he figured they would have. He'd already scolded himself for not advertising it sooner but it was too late to worry about it now.

Listening closely, Caleb found himself smiling lightly at Tak's words. "Sounds like fun," he said happily, figuring that he might as well participate. Not only did it seem like a good cause and a productive use of his free time, but it might enable him to make more friends. Seeing as that was high on his list of priorities, it was definitely worth a try. "I'm not going anywhere," he then admitted, his smile fading slightly, "But that sounds cool. Count me in for sure."

"Great! I'll personally see to it you have a silly hat and or headband at the ready!" He grinned, his excitement for the situation more obvious than anything. In truth, he worried that they wouldn't have enough people to really make a difference though Ron had assured him that every little bit helps several times by then.

At the mention of Caleb's plans for the break his grin dropped a little. "You're not...going anywhere?" His confusion was obvious as his head tilted. "Oh! You're just going home for Christmas?" He smiled, not wanting to think the other boy would be staying at the school for the holidays. Tak would never allow such an atrocity to the holiday spirit take place. Christmas alone? Or worse yet, at school?! There was just no way.

Chucking shortly, Caleb nodded. "I call a set of antlers," he said jokingly, his posture once again relaxing. His arms dropped from their folded position, his hands coming to slip into the pockets of his track bottoms instead. It really did sound like fun and he was happy to have received his first invitation somewhere.

With a melancholic smile as Tak mentioned the holidays, Caleb shook his head. "I'm not going home," he explained softly, "I'm staying here over break. My dad's away working." He declined to mention his mother, though he expected Tak to want him to elaborate. He didn't mind so much. It just seemed an awkward thing to come out with straight away.

"Oh....sorry to hear that." Tak began, frowning once more before continuing carefully. He didn't want to upset the other boy again but he was curious once more and it didn't seem to be too terrible a question. "So...your Mom is going with him?"

He didn't know how else to approach the situation beyond head on. Perhaps his default needed more work but that would take time and someone who could handle his bluntness in the far off future.

Shaking his head and forcing a smile, Caleb hoped that Tak could see he wasn't too affected. He was used to his dad being away. Even when he was around, it was almost as though he wasn't. The conversation wasn't exactly sparkling.

"I don't know where my mom is," he admitted, his voice somewhat nonchalant. It still hurt a lot but the pain had dulled over the years. It had been over thirteen years ago, after all. "She left when I was little and we haven't seen her since."

Taking in the information, Tak nodded slowly, and with a softer smile did his best to choose his words carefully. "I can relate..." He began, pausing a moment to chuckle. "My parents...well, birth parents aren't around much either. My Mom died when I was about two and my Dad...well, he's just...yeah."

The blonde bit his bottom lip a moment. Was the subject too much? He didn't like throwing things on other people but he felt the need to share in that moment. "But I've got an awesome step-mom. So I guess it all worked out for the best, huh?"

"I'm sorry," Caleb said, his voice so soft and quiet that it was barely audible. It was heavy stuff and a serious subject matter, and he wasn't entirely sure why both of them were sharing so much considering they didn't know one another at all. It was a bit odd but Caleb actually felt okay with letting it out. "I'm glad it worked out for you," he went on to say, his tongue wetting his lips as he averted his gaze.

"No, no it's cool!" Tak replied quickly, waving his hands in a worried manner. He hadn't meant to upset the young boy once more and it seemed his choice of words or subject matter only reverted the younger boy back to look at the floor. "I-- uhm, I'm sure it'll work out for you too. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to turn this talk so heavy."

He hoped it would at least. There were things, he was sure, that were left out. Tak didn't know Caleb very well and didn't want to push his luck of not completely making the situation awkward. Taking a moment then to think how they'd gotten onto the subject of parents in the first place.

With a faint smile, Caleb nodded. "Someday," he said, removing one hand from his pocket in order to anxiously sweep through his hair. He wasn't entirely sure he believed that but there was always a faint hope that it could be true. Someday.

Looking back at Tak, the younger boy chuckled. "This is deep," he commented, hoping that the other boy didn't feel bad. There was nothing to be worried about. "It's cool though," he said, "I don't mind. Not meaning to sound like I'm trying to shake you, but weren't you going for a run about ten minutes ago?"
