The entrance to the room covered by long black streamers and cobwebs, the Juniors of Johnson hall had really thrown together quite a party. Decorations all around the entrance of the suite as well as the main room the boys of Dalton had all pitched in (those who could) for drinks, snacks, and food. Though Tak had continued his prank raid, causing several of his friends to sigh (and Raf to scream) the group of boys had created quite an atmosphere.

Safe from the reach of teachers, drinking games were set up in a corner, and with the alarm set for an hour before people were supposed start causing chaos. Costumes, of course, required as it was a Halloween party.

Dorian didn't think he had ever seen Thomas before (at least not in class) but it didn't matter to him either, and he had no idea how old the other boy was but since Ron, Tak, Benji and the other Warblers who were mostly Juniors and Seniors didn't seem to consider him too young to be worth talking to, he had no reason to worry about that. He was surprised to hear the comment about his costume. It seemed so uncreative compared to that dartboard... But the question made a good start for a real conversation. "Not a big fan who knows a lot of details, but my father has many DVDs and I like to watch them with him. Which means I mostly know the French dubbing and I know it must appear sacrilegious but well, his English is bad." And here he was, already giving details no one cared about... He should have started with an introduction. But it was not too late. "I'm Dorian, by the way. Freshman and-" He stopped before "Warbler", thinking it might sound like bragging. "-not used to Halloween parties," he added instead. "You were there last year already?"

Thomas nodded. "Same here, same here. I´ve seen bits and pieces of all the series but none of them really, you know, throughout." He shrugged. "I love Red Dwarf, though, if you´re familiar with that."

Then he realized that he had not introduced himself yet. "Nice to meet you!" he said, offering Dorian a handshake. "I´m Thomas. I´m a Sophomore and yeah, I´ve been here for a while. Not used to Halloween parties or Halloween in general? Where are you from, if you don´t mind me asking? Also, French dubbing´s acceptable, I think. Not like you´re required to watch everything in original. My Mom is a French professor, by the way, but I´m not sure how good my own French is."

He was probably talking a little too much, but his mouth liked to run away from him.

Had the conversation happened in journal comments, Dorian would have opened Wikipedia in a new tab in order to avoid appearing completely ignorant. As it was, he had no choice but tell the truth. "I've never heard of it, actually. Or maybe the French title is so different I can't tell it's the same show. What's the story?"

Dorian returned the handshake, unconsciously imitating Ron's formal manners. "Nice to meet you." But he quickly came back to his own, less adult-like, usual behavior. "I'm from Belgium, but I lived in Canada for eight years and my mother is from Ohio, which is why I'm here now - all her male relatives went to Dalton. So I did know Halloween. It's just the first time I go to a party."

Even if Dorian often worried about talking too much and boring people too, he liked it when people did that. It was the best way to get to know them, after all. "Some people don't think French dubbing is acceptable...and I must say it makes me cringe sometimes because some lines just don't sound like things people would really say, or when I know the English version too I notice it doesn't mean exactly the same. In the original series of Star Trek, what particularly bothers me is the way they say Enterprise..." He repeated it in French and added, "It's ridiculous," rolling his eyes.

So Thomas could speak French, at least a little... Dorian was tempted to ask him to say something but he decided against it, not wanting to embarrass a potential new friend. "You take a French class here?" he asked instead.
