Who: Mocchi & Connie
What: Vanity wins out and Mocchi goes to see Connie about his nose
Where: Connie's office
When: Thursday, April 13 (backdated just a tiny bit). 8 A.M.
Rating: SFW

At first, Mocchi had been almost positive he wasn't going to go see Mom about his nose. He hadn't thought it was broken, anyway, and that way he wouldn't actually have to explain that he'd left campus without telling her at all. Or that he'd gotten into a fight. Except at some time he was going to have to go home and he figured it was better to get it over with now rather than later and he was sure this was one of those fabled 'You are SO GROUNDED, Mister' situations.

Also it was still hurting like all holy hell, so it was probably better to check now if it was broken before it set wrong or something. It wasn't bleeding anymore, but overnight the entirety of his nose had mottled into a purpleish color to match the other bruises scattered on his face.

That wasn't even counting his ribs. He looked like he'd gotten into a fight with a bus. And lost. Horribly.

He rapped on the office door lightly before creaking it open and peering in. Now or never.

Connie glanced up from her work. It was the beginning of first period, but she never knew when one of the boys would show up... "I'm here, come on in," she called, taking her glasses off.

He was not going to pout. OK, yes he was. Because there went his 'Oh well I tried to tell you but you weren't in the office' excuse. Mocchi entered, staring at his shoes the whole time--even though his hair wasn't long enough to obscure his face any more.

"Um. Hi, Mom," He shifted from foot to foot, not looking up, "Um. My nose. It hurts. Could you make sure it isn't..like..broken?"

She looked up, her welcoming smile turning to an expression of pure horror and nearly overturned her chair standing up. She crossed the office in two swift steps. "Mocchi! What the... What happened?". She took his arm, leading him to the exam area where the lit was better.

"I got into a fight," Mocchi pouted as he followed his mom into the exam area, cringing a little at the expression on her face. Well. It wasn't like he had expected a cheerful 'Of course I can, beloved son, and then you may go on your merry way with no repercussions at all.'

That would have been nice, though. In a dream world.

"I think I won?" He offered hopefully.

She sat him down and examined his nose carefully and gently. She was almost afraid to ask... But... "How did this happen, Mocchi? ". This bruising was at least a day old! "And when?"

"Yesterday," He stuck his bottom lip out, turning his most 'I am adorable and hurt so be nice to me' expression on her, "I..one of my friends. From Asian Camp. He asked if I wanted to hang out so I signed out...and we ended up driving to Dublin. Then I kind of ruined his parents' big fundraiser and we had a mild disagreement. With fists. And I ended up knocking him in the head with one of my textbooks a few times."

He flinched at the touching of his nose, "Of course he smacked me a few times, too."

She looked up into his eyes, her own clouded with concern, trying to figure out whether he was telling her the truth. after all, she had been questioned about bruising when he was in the hospital as well. And the fact that he'd keptnthis from her all day, when he must have been in pain....

"Mocchi... Why didn't you come to me yesterday, honey?" she asked quietly.

Mocchi shrugged a little, "I dunno. Jack came and picked me up from Dublin and Briar had made me tea and I put ice on my nose and made sure I didn't move around too much because my ribs hurt..but then this morning it hurt to get up and my face felt like someone had gone through my nose with a drill..so.." He sighed, "And I didn't want to get in trouble but then I thought 'what if my nose is broken' because that means my nose will be bumpy and not straight like right now and yes, I think I'm that superficial because I really hope it's not broken."

She couldn't quite suppress her annoyed little huff. Briar was such a medical expert, obviously, they really didn't even need her here. "Luckily enough, it isn't broken. Let's see the ribs, then." She warmed her stethoscope up, waiting for him to let her look, trying to contain her own feelings of irritation, disappointment, and, frankly, hurt feelings behind a layer of professionally cool demeanor.

That little huff from Connie caused Mocchi to half-curl in on himself, frowning unhappily. He should have just skipped class or something and took some painkillers. Now he was in trouble, he just knew it.

"The ribs aren't even that bad," He defended sulkily, pulling off his uniform jacket, loosening and removing his tie and unbuttoning his dress shirt. It was one of the annoying things about the uniform--layers upon layers, whereas he could have just pulled a t-shirt straight off. "It just hurts."

His ribs weren't broken, at least. He was familiar with that particular kind of pain. There were, however, four or five fist-sized, blackish-purple spots across his abdomen.

She checked his ribs, very gently, for herself. Bruises, but that was all, as he had said. She fetched a bottle of painkillers from her cabinet and came back over with them. She handed them to him, and then sat beside him carefully. She had noticed his reaction, and it made her feel guilty. "You're ok," she said, after a moment. "Though I imagine it hurts quite a bit."

She reached over to take his hand. "Mocchi... I know you aren't used to having to let someone know what you plan to do. Or having anyone to call besides one of the guys when things go wrong. But... I'm your Mom, now. You want me to be your Mom, right?"

"Of course I do," Mocchi pouted, popping open the painkillers and swallowing two of them dry, "It's just. My dad didn't exactly give me the best tutorial on how to be someone's kid." He shrugged, then winced as the movement made his ribs ache, "I don't mean to make you feel out of the loop or like I don't need or want you around. But it's hard because I'm used to taking care of myself and sometimes I forget that you won't tell me 'Don't bother me with something trivial' or 'Learn to solve your own problems'."

He buttoned his dress shirt, fiddling with the last button he did up, "The guys have always just..I don't know. Helped me out. Since I came to Dalton, anyway. Like having a pack of overprotective big brothers."

"I understand that," she told him with snother sigh. "And I don't have much experience with being a mom, either, and I know it gets weird for both of us. But I want to kow when something is wrong. so I can help. And I do think, though, that if you leave campus, you should let me know, OK? If something like this happens again," she gave him a stern look, one that immediately softened, though, "which I really hope it doesn't... Just... call me, OK? You can call the guys, too, I just need to know what's going on. I know you are ok this time around, and I know Briar takes good care of you, too... but. I am the medical professional around here, right?"

She squeezed his hand gently, drawing him into a careful hug. "When I offered to take care of you, I meant it, love. I want us to be a real family. We just have to figure out what that means and where the boundaries should be." And, she thought, that means Briar, too.... if I can ever get him to accept that I am part of the equation.
