Who: Castiel Grants and Leonard D’Amico
What: the Cas and Len show (aka celebratory dindin)
Where: School grounds and then a nearby restaurant
Rating: SFW

His head was still spinning. When Leonard had decided to try out for the Warblers he honestly hadn’t expected anything to come of it and now… He was still half convinced this was all some sort of dream and he’d wake up any moment to find Logan standing over him with the same bored expression he wore outside of Vocal Adrenaline practices. If this was all some sort of dream he was never leaving his room again, damnit. He’d DIE in there! Okay… he realized that was a slightly overdramatic train of thought but things at Dalton hadn’t been quite as bad as he’d imagined. The teachers were brilliant, classes were fast paced and (if he did say so himself) so far ahead of Carmel, the other students weren’t completely terrifying, and (best of all) the Warblers weren’t evil. The ones he’d met or talked to had seemed quite charming. He couldn’t keep his defenses up around them. Maybe he’d originally agreed to the audition with thoughts of revenge but, while he spent the night going over song choices and practicing, it became about regaining something he’d lost. Getting kicked out of Carmel, losing that connection he’d shared with his brother… all of that had left him feeling very out of place in the world. He wanted to belong and he hoped the Warblers could help him with that.

Spotting Cas as the younger boy walked out of the school Leonard bounced slightly on his heels, throwing his hand up to try and get the other boy’s attention. “Cas! Castiel! Cassy Cas Cas!” He waved his hands and flashed his friend a wide grin. Yeah, he knew that was all probably overkill but he couldn’t help it. He was still working off of the exhilaration of the announcement. He moved to fall into step next to the other boy.

Weighed down by a messenger bag carrying his texts, Cas had developed a sort of tilt towards his right side to compensate for the extra weight. The only book he held in his hands to help his poor shoulder was his notebook. What began as a blank five-subject notebook was now brimming with slender post-it notes and actual printer paper sheets cut-and-pasted in. In short, a lot of stuff was sticking out of his behemoth notebook. Beyond his standard Dalton uniform, Cas wore a red beret that was ambiguously feminine and possibly passed onto him by his mother.

He didn't turn around when he heard his name; in his mind, he already saw Leonard bouncing towards him. "Hello, Len," he greeted in a soft voice. It wasn't until Len caught up that Castiel looked over at him. Cas regarded his friend from head to toe, avoiding his eyes as he did so. After the look-over, Cas turned back to the road and hummed. "I'm only warning you once; be careful not to choke on your noodles."

If it bothered Leonard that Cas didn't actually look at him when he greeted him it certainly didn't show. Leonard may have been used to Cas' particular brand of weirdness but the two of them hadn't really spent much time together in person. A majority of their interactions took place online in the form of emails sent back and forth. Which meant this entire outing could end up being very, very awkward. Unlike Cas, Leonard had ditched the more bothersome pieces of his uniform back in his dorm room. The Dalton blazer was replaced by a comfortable grey hoodie, his tie was missing, and the top two buttons of his shirt were open. "I like your beret." It may have been slightly feminine but it seemed to match the rest of the uniform.

"Choke? I'm not going to choke. I've been doing the solid food things since I was six months old, Cas. I think I can handle it." He said proudly, holding his head high as he attempted to actually strut alongside Cas. The strutting didn't last very long and, within moments, he was back at his friend's side walking at something of a normal pace. "How far is this place from the school? Joel could always give us a lift. He lives for driving his younger brothers and their friends around." Or he lived for driving Leonard around since it was no big secret around the D'Amico household of just which twin the eldest boy preferred.

When he had a screen between himself and other people, Cas found it much easier to communicate. People weren't watching him for nuances and subtleties that you couldn't control. For one who had become quite good at reading others, Cas hated being read himself. It made him antsy and that was no good for someone destined to be the ruler of a kingdom (that was how it worked when you married a princess, right?) "Thanks," he replied, a ghost of a smile tugging at his lips. So far so good.

He even giggled a little at Leonard's response to his warning. What began as genuine concern for a friend's well-being was rebuked with a snarky retort. "Okay." Cas looked up to the corner of his right eye, an involuntary action he did when trying to recall information. "It's about fifteen minutes away by foot. We can walk that distance." And the walk would give them plenty of time to talk in person, practice that Cas sorely needed.

Cas wasn't talking much and, honestly, Leonard didn't know what to make of that. The younger boy was talkative online. He was even a little more talkative in class though Leonard supposed that had more to do with the drama exercises they had going on rather than talking for the sake of talking. The silence between them didn't bode well for them. Normally, Leonard wouldn't put much thought into it and would just let the conversation die but he liked Cas which meant he wanted to talk. If Cas wasn't going to contribute much to the conversation, however, Len was going to awkwardly (and randomly!) talk about anything and everything... if he could think of something to talk about.

"Fifteen minutes is completely do-able." He nodded. "I was a little worried it would be further. Remember how you said you wanted to try being friends with Logan? Well... I was thinking that Lo isn't exactly the right brother to start with. I have another one, you know, and Joel is so much nicer than Lo anyway. He's in his first year of college. I think he's going to be a lawyer or something. He's definintely more politically minded than the rest of us. Which is probably why our grandfather likes him so much. He's... not actually all that fond of me since, you know, I wound up getting kicked out of Carmel." Yeah that might have been a little much all at once. "Um... so, yeah."

Cas didn't mean to let the conversation dwindle away into awkward silence. He should have warned Leonard beforehand that he wasn't very good at social interactions in person. He always thought too much about how he should have behaved without actually doing anything. It was almost like he wanted to be a perfectionist, but was too afraid to follow through with any of his designs.

In spite of his silence, Cas actually nodded to show that he was following what Len said. He liked Len; the two of them had bonded without any trouble whatsoever through their emails. "He has plenty of time to change his mind about becoming a lawyer. Law school comes after the first four years of undergrad studies, right?" Cas mulled it over to himself. He looked at Len and then placed his hand upon the other boy's arm. "His loss. I'm fond of you if that helps."

Physical touch. Why did people always want to touch or shake hands or hug? What was wrong with just... standing near one another? Leonard honestly couldn't understand the need to touch but he trusted Cas. Cas was one of the few people he would make an exception for when it came to his no touch policy. Instead of pulling away (or jerking away) Leonard offered Cas a soft smile. "Well... I'm glad someone's fond of me. I'm fond of you too." The silence this time seemed a little more companionable than the previous awkward one.

Cas smiled to himself at the words, thinking them a very sweet thing to say. It was like one of Mother's movies, when a pair of friends had a little heart-to-heart about their differences and similarities. It pleased him to no end to be in the midst of such a situation. "Out of all the billions of people on this world, I don't think I'd be as happy hearing that from someone else as I do you." He backed away sheepishly and continued down the road towards their destination, thinking he just heard his stomach growl.

"Tell me more about Joel. Or Logan. Anything I don't know yet. Or if you do repeat, I'll continue off of what you said!"

"Hmm..." He bit his lower lip as he tried to think about something he hadn't told Cas in previous emails back and forth. Technically anything about his brothers was fair game. Len hadn't said much about either of them but he had told Cas a lot about Donna... which he assumed had something to do with the fact that she was a baby so she was still new and exciting to him. "I don't think I've told you much about Joel, have I? He actually wants to be a lawyer. Most kids... they want to be, like, astronauts or firemen or race car driving pirate kings in space but Joel? Joel's always wanted to be a lawyer or a judge. If it was different before I was born I couldn't tell you but dad says it's always been that way. I think he used to hear stories about our grandfather and uncles. My dad's the black sheep of the family, he ran away and followed his dreams. Up until my grandma died our entire family was shunned but we had stories and our granddad always seemed so... larger than life in them. I think Joel wanted to prove to him that he was worthy of the D'Amico name. Logan's sort of the same way. I never really cared."

He paused to look around as they walked, taking in the scenery around them. He hadn't really strayed too much from the school grounds since his transfer. It seemed like a nice enough area and it was close enough to home that he could still visit on the weekends if Joel gave him a ride and he wanted. His parents, at the very least, probably would've liked to hear about his acceptance into the Warblers.

Cas refrained from taking notes as he often did. The things he heard about Leonard's siblings were mostly tidbits about likes and dislikes; the things he wanted to record had more to do with behavior and speech patterns. He was more interested in a person's personality above all else. Hearing about people from a third party often skewed his predictions, so Cas simply nodded along, polite as could be. He had forgotten some things here and there, but he knew plenty about Len's family now. In fact, the way Len didn't seem to care for his family's name intrigued Castiel. Most boys had someone to idolize; Len didn't seem to want to chase after any footprints. An independent fellow walked beside Cas, and he felt sort of empowered himself.

"Look. The flowers are starting to bloom." Cas pointed at a tree across the street, its branches flowering. He skipped on ahead, holding onto his beret as he bounced. "It's spring!" he exclaimed, stating the obvious with a joy that painted it unique.

The family had never really done anything for Leonard. His grandparents weren't even a part of his life until after his grandmother had fallen ill and his mother became pregnant with Donna. If he idolized anyone it was his father. For all he'd been born with, all the opportunities he'd had to fall in line with his siblings Michael D'Amico chose a life as far removed from all of that as you could get. He chased his dreams no matter how far from home or how far into poverty they brought him. Sure, it sucked and Leonard didn't have the easiest of childhoods (he'd never been able to keep a friend) but his parents always found a way to make things work and they were stronger, as a family, for it. His father understood him. He didn't always agree with his son's actions. Hell, he probably wasn't always proud of Leonard but, in the end, he understood and that was enough. If Leonard was independent it was because of his father.

Tilting his head to the side, Leonard laughed as he watched Cas skip in the direction of the flowers. Who honestly skipped once they went into high school? It was cute. "Technically it's been spring. March 21st is usually the first day of spring. You'd never know it with the weather we've been having though." He chuckled as he walked ahead of Cas and towards one of the flowering trees on their side of the streeth. Reaching up he gently plucked a flower from the overhanging branches and held it out to the shorter boy. "I think it'll look good with your beret."

Brought up by a sweet couple, Cas had never known a struggle for approval. He had always been close with his mother, perhaps in part due to her forgetfulness and thus a need for someone to look after her. Cas loved her films with an endless passion and he'd watched every single one at least ten times over. He knew the lines by heart and wasn't shy about starring as every role for her. If there was a person in the world Cas wanted to do well by, it was his beloved mother. Of course, Cas was also close with his father; te two of them frequented parks and went on hikes, enjoying what nature had to offer. But as his father had a job and his mother stayed at home, Cas had had more opportunities with his mother to bond.

How right Leonard was. Castiel shrugged at the slight discrepancy. He had paused underneath one of the trees, attention snapping away as a shadow was cast upon the pavement. It looked like an arm, one that belonged to his friend. At the gift, Cas smiled and took the flower into the palm of his hand. He sniffed the blossom before tucking it behind his ear. "Thanks, Len. I'm sure it looks nice." Probably girly at that, too, but no one was watching. "I miss having picnics. We should plan one. Wouldn't it be fun?" He could taste the potato salad already. And he could smell the pie--

"--I have the hugest craving for pie right now."

"A picnic would be fun." Leonard agreed. "Maybe we can invite your roommate too." What was the other boy's name? El-something? Leonard was occasionally lousy with names. He knew Cas had a roommate, he could picture the other boy in his mind but... he couldn't put a name to the face. That was probably a bad thing. Something he should work on maybe but there would be time for that later. Leonard was going to be spending the next few years with this group of boys he'd have time to learn names and develop friendships outside of Cas. Everything just seemed a little daunting at the moment. He'd focus on the Warblers, Cas, and his school work first and start juggling everything else next year. Yeah, that seemed reasonable.

"Okay, Cas." He said as he looked around in an attempt to get a feel of just where they were. His mother had a store in Westerville he should've had a better handle on location, right? "How much further? We can discuss pie and where to get one once we're having dinner." He hadn't known that Cas favored pie. If he had he would've looked into buying Cas one on his actual birthday.

At the mention of Elwood, Cas's face lit up. He hummed at Len's suggestion. It'd be nice if Ellie had more friends; his roommate was so shy. "Really? I think he'd like that," he said out of politeness. In reality, he figured that it'd be a challenge to get Ellie to participate. Still, the opportunity had presented itself. Castiel wasn't one to pass those up.

Cas skipped on ahead and pointed at a building. The neon sign in the window exclaimed OPEN. Above Cas dangled red paper lanterns and unlit Christmas lights. He tugged at the door and held it open for Len.

Leonard, obviously, didn’t know much about Castiel’s roommate. If he had then he probably wouldn’t have asked if the other boy would be interested in joining them for a picnic. As it was, Leonard was imagining something a little bigger than just the three of them. It probably would’ve been easier if Leonard had had a roommate of his own but he was sure they could find a few more freshman interested in enjoying the weather with them. If not, well, they always had RA’s. Maybe if he asked nicely Walker would come along. Then again… maybe he wouldn’t. The sophomore didn’t seem to hang out with other boys. It couldn’t hurt to ask but Leonard wouldn’t hold his breath. “Do you think we could get anyone else interested? If not our fellow freshmen then maybe a few sophomores? The RA’s? This stays strictly between us but I think Walker could use a little sunlight and fresh air. Just… don’t tell him I said that. He’s kind of scary when he’s being an annoyed stick in the mud.”

Following Cas up to the doorway he frowned at the Christmas lights. It was a little late in the year for them to still be strung up but, okay, maybe they were one of those weird places that actually used the lights for decoration. Yeah, he could see that. “I like the lanterns.” He said, smiling softly as he turned his attention from the lights to the paper lanterns. He should’ve brought his camera with him from home. Normally scenery wasn’t his thing. He liked capturing moments in time, capturing people. Leonard liked photography for the story telling aspect of it. He wanted to be a photo journalist; he wanted to work for newspapers or magazines and paint stories for their readers with nothing more than a few snapshots. Slipping through the open door he offered Cas a silent thanks and waited for the younger boy to follow him before deciding on a table.

A little party of freshmen, what a sight that would be. Castiel tried to envision it in his head. The images involved a lot of screaming boys chasing after each other as if this were kindergarten all over again. He smiled at the thought. As for that Walker fellow, well, he wasn't quite sure what to make of their RA. "I'm not sure. I'll ask around and see what happens." The boy always kept to himself and he didn't seem to have many friends. Poor guy.

"Aren't they pretty?" Cas settled down at a small table by the wall. He flagged a waitress down and mentioned that he would like the dessert prepared in advance. "So... congratulations. I'm looking forward to seeing you on stage."

Leonard was completely fine with the idea of screaming boys chasing one another as long as no one was touching him. He realized, however, that his whole "no touchy" rule made things difficult. What if they decided to really act like they were in kindergarten and all wanted to play tag? Reaching out he placed a hand on Cas's shoulder for the briefest of moments (and without explanation) before pulling it back. Okay, well, he didn't hate that. Maybe if he were constantly "it" he wouldn't have much of a problem... but that wasn't very fun, was it? Who really wanted to run around while trying to avoid the same person. Sometimes it was just as fun to chase as it was to be chased. He'd think of something. As for Walker... well, Leonard didn't personally know the RA and he wasn't on the older boy's floor but he liked to think he could be pretty persuasive when he wanted to be. If puppy dog eyes worked on Cas maybe they'd work on Walker? "If that doesn't work I'll make a trip to your floor and ask him myself. Who knows, maybe I'll have some luck with him."

Turning his attention back to the door as they settled at their table Len smiled softly. "They are. I've always liked those lantern things. The Christmas lights are a bit weird but the lanterns are nice." He frowned a little at the mention of a stage. "Thanks..." He said softly. "I have to admit that I'm just a bit nervous. I really didn't think I'd get it." Especially not with the question he'd been asked. He'd assumed the fact that he was a new transfer and a freshman working to keep up with the new environment and classes would count against him. "I'm glad you believe in me though, Cas. It means a lot to know someone does."

Of course Castiel believed in Len. Several months worth of emails could divulge plenty of information about a person's character. By Cas's standards, Len was one of those sorts with hidden potential, and it was the kind that wouldn't take too much to uncover. "I think we all need someone who believes in us. Because if you don't mean anything to anyone but yourself, then what's the point? It's like you don't even exist." Because the more well-known you were, the more tangible you became. In a way, Cas understood the appeal of fame to the flamboyant types. Someone had to be around to stoke those passionate flames.

But he wasn't one for the spotlight himself. Being the center of attention never boded well - not unless he wasn't himself. Layman's terms, Cas could get in front of a crowd so long as he was portraying a role. Without strict guidelines to follow, everything simply crumbled. "But you'll always exist," - he pointed to both mind and heart - "Here and here."
