Who: Benji and Ron
What: Having lunch and catching up
Where: Auditorium then Cafeteria
When: Saturday 9th April 2011, lunch break between Warbler auditions
Rating: SFW

Ron was proper and polite and dedicated enough to not spend the auditions staring at his watch - focusing instead on the performers - but he was still oddly glad when it was the time for lunch break. Not so much because he was hungry as because he needed to stretch his legs and take a break to be able to even listen to the people that yet had to perform. Getting up from his seat as soon as the last person auditioning was off stage, he smoothed down his shirt and looked at Benji.

"Do you want to get some lunch?" he asked, hoping they could have it together. He always liked to spend time with his best friend and it seemed that they had not seen much of each other since returning from Orlando.

So Benji had this theory that the more auditions they held, the longer each of those ten minutes felt - and he was pretty sure he was right. Somehow, he managed to hold in his sigh of relief when Blaine called lunch break and he got up as well, undoing his blazer and taking it off. It was a nice day, a little warmer than it had been lately - though, not as warm as Orlando, - and he really didn't feel like staying in full dress all day. With a nod, he grinned over at Ron, actually kind of grateful for the offer, "That'd be great." It felt like it had been ages since they'd really hung out, just the two of them; mostly, they just caught a few minutes here and there before rehearsals or in the hall. It'd be nice to actually sit down and catch up for a change.

Had Benji voiced his theory out loud, Ron would probably agree. If it made no sense from the scientific point of view - and maybe it even did, but Ron did not know enough about Physics to decide one way or another - it was certainly logical from the point of view of Psychology. Taking off his own blazer, Ron nodded and smiled at his best friend before heading for the door. He did not mind the uniform, unlike many other people, but it was really a little too warm for the blazer.

"Cafeteria, right?" he asked once they were outside the Auditorium, wanting to be sure where they were heading.

Slinging his blazer over his shoulder for the time being, Benji followed Ron out of the auditorium, nodding again. "Yeah," he confirmed. An hour was a decent amount of time, but he didn't want to get stuck off campus and be late getting back. Staying at his friend's side as they walked, he was quiet for a moment before asking, "How's Evan? He's seemed down lately..." He trailed off, casting his friend a concerned glance - he didn't want to pry or anything, he just wanted to make sure that everyone was alright.

Letting his feet take the familiar route now that he knew where they were going, comfortable that he could focus on talking instead of walking now as the later would be more or less automatic and subconscious, Ron sighed a little at the question.

"Fortunately a lot better than he had been. Next time he is down I will feed him cake straight away, it seems to work," he said. "He... was not happy about Rent, since he cannot sing, and took it a lot worse than I would have expected. But he is back to his normal self now," he finished with a small smile. He was rather relieved for that, because while he did not love Evan any less when the boy was depressed, he felt a lot better when his boyfriend was happy.

"How are you? And Vince?"

Benji's concern grew, momentarily, at Ron's sigh, but it dwindled a bit at his response, "I'm glad." Chuckling a little at the cake comment, he shook his head, then admitted, "I wondered if that was part of it." With a shrug, by way of explanation, he added, "I didn't notice his name on the audition sheet and figured it was a little weird." The choice really did suck for people like Evan, who were more actor than singer. "Is that part of why you didn't audition?"

Ron's next question gave him a moment of pause, which Benji hoped went unnoticed by his friend. "We're alright," he answered, turning his gaze forward as he bit his lip. He was a terrible liar, wasn't he? "Sort of," he added after another moment, knowing Ron wouldn't have let him get away with brushing the question off like that.

"A tiny part," Ron admitted. "There were other reasons why I did not, but I think it was what made me not even consider it. If I really wanted a role, I would probably audition anyway, especially since Evan actually told me I should, but as I am not exactly interested in acting and at the moment I really have a rather busy schedule..." He shrugged. "I am not regretting anything, most definitely."

At Benji´s answer, Ron arched an eyebrow. "Sort of," he repeated, concerned. That was never a good sign. "It is not my place to pry, but you know that if you need to talk, I will listen."

Nodding along as Ron spoke, Benji looked down, "Yeah, it's a pretty busy time of the year, anyway." It was sweet for Ron to opt out for Evan's sake, but it was probably also good that he'd have auditioned if he really wanted to. Being held back for fear of upsetting someone always sucked. "No regrets," he agreed, grinning slightly. RENT was a great play and all, but Benji hadn't been entirely comfortable with going against his family to be in it. It was just easier this way.

Benji hesitated for a moment, glancing over at Ron before looking at the ground again, "We've just been a little weird since we got back." Shrugging, he offered a half-smile, "We got a little too drunk the night before we left, got carried away. Things, uh, may or may not have happened, with, um. With Gavin." Feeling his cheeks darken, he stopped to pull the door open, glad for the temporary distraction. Why was it so easy to tell Ron all of that? He hadn't actually meant to. "Please don't tell anyone," he added, probably unnecessarily.

"With Nationals and everything," Ron nodded and smiled. "It will be fun to watch even if we are not part of it. I am certain they will do great job."

"Of course I will not," was his first, automatic, reaction to Benji´s words and that probably saved him from blinking and stuttering as it gave him time to process the information. He still blushed, though, as it clearly belonged in the category of topics that made him blush.

With Gavin? Did that mean Benji and Vince and Gavin? He was casting no moral judgment on the situation, considering instead merely the possible consequences. It was not inherently wrong, he had merely not expected it.

"I see how that would make things awkward." He said slowly, biting his lip. "Have you talked about it?"

It was probably unnecessary to mention what a bad idea drinking was.

"They will," Benji agreed. "There's always been talk of wanting to do RENT songs," he added, smiling a little, "Everyone'll do great."

Smiling with relief, he offered a quiet 'thank you,' then sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Vince and I finally talked about it the other night," he started, averting his gaze for a moment, "We still need to talk with Gavin." He hesitated, about to say something else, but then backed out. "We'll survive, I'm sure," he said instead, his smile nervous but still somewhat encouraging.

"Who would not want to do a RENT song?" Ron grinned slightly. "I am really looking forward to seeing it, especially now that Evan is not upset over it."

Nodding, Ron wondered if Benji would tell him more. He was curious, but he did not want to pry. "I am glad to hear that," he said. He liked Vince. While he did not quite him well (yet), he knew that the boy genuinely cared for Benji and that was the most important thing. "I hope it goes well, then," he added, biting his lip and wondering what exactly "well" meant in this case. Still, he offered his friend a smile in return. Smiles were a good thing.

"Truth," he commented with a laugh. Even with the play, Benji still thought Seasons of Love would've made a great Warblers number, so he had to agree. "But if we have to sit through one more bad audition of someone reusing their RENT song..." Shaking his head, he trailed off, assuming that Ron would catch his drift. "It'll be cool to see everyone get into character," he added. He really couldn't wait to watch.

"Yeah, I hope so, too." He fell silent, debating something for a moment or two before adding, "I'm just... nervous, I guess. It's sort of a messy situation." There were feelings everywhere, at this point, and Benji wasn't sure what to think of anything anymore. Noting Ron's curious expression, he explained, "Vince... Um. He thinks he might like Gavin." That was probably the hardest part, now. It wasn't that he doubted the older boy's feelings for him, but he still feared losing him. And then there was still so much left unknown about their night together...

Ron sighed at the mention of bad auditions. "I really wish people were a little more critical when it comes to their singing." Could they not hear themselves?

Oh. Ron blinked, then frowned. That was definitely a messy situation. "But..." It was possible to be attracted to more people, he knew that. Perhaps it was possible to even love more people, even though he could not imagine how that worked. Still, he was willing to believe it. Therefore but he likes you was not the question he needed to ask. He knew Vince did like Benji.

"How do you feel about that?" he asked quietly. While he did not want to ask too much unless Benji wanted to tell him, maybe it would be good for his friend to talk to someone who was not involved in the whole thing. He personally would have a big problem dealing with a situation like that, even despite the fact that he was slowly but certainly becoming more confident in his relationship.

"Seriously," Benji agreed, rolling his eyes, "I always figured the really bad auditions on, like, American Idol were jokes but looking at some of the Warbler auditions... people are way too tone deaf about themselves."

Honestly, Benji was a little relieved by Ron's reaction - the last thing he wanted was some sort of 'if he hurts you, I'll kick his ass' thing. That wouldn't do anyone any good. Rubbing at his neck, he gave a half hearted shrug, "Worried? There isn't anything I can do about, and he says he loves me..." ...but Gavin could be better for him. He remembered what Gavin had told them about Colby, had heard him with Jack, once... What if that was what Vince really wanted? Benji couldn't really offer that - or even anything to rival it. Not that he thought Vince was shallow! But it was an added bonus Gavin could give him.

Chuckling, Ron nodded. But it was actually a bit sad, how much some people lacked self-reflection.

Ron was not someone to offer empty threads. He was not a violent person and could not imagine hurting Vince even if he wanted to. And he would want to, if he made Benji upset. Instead of thinking about that, though, he focused on Benji´s words. Worried was understandable. "You are amazing and if he is worth it, he is definitely not going to leave you for anyone else," Ron concluded. "As for not being able to do anything about it... You cannot control his feelings, but as long as you are in relationship, you have a say in how he deals with this attraction. Just... do not agree to anything you are not comfortable with, alright?" he said, biting his lip and looking at his friend in concern. He wished he could offer actual advice, but relationships really were not his domain of expertise.

Smiling over at his friend, Benji couldn't help but blush a little, "Thanks, Ron." He bit his lip as the other teen continued, nodding along while he listened. Ron was right, definitely. It would only cause more problems in the long-run if he tried too hard to keep Vince happy and let himself get hurt in the process. It was just... a bit complicated, because his own feelings for Gavin were still confusing and muddled. He probably wouldn't have even paid them any mind if it weren't for Gavin's crush on him and Vince's attraction to Gavin. He shook that off for now, though.

"I won't," he promised, giving his friend a reassuring smile. "It'll all work out however it's meant to."

Returning the smile, Ron nodded. "I am certain it will. Good luck. And if you ever need to talk, well, you know where I live." Why were relationships so complicated? His own, though, was fortunately working rather well at the moment.

"Thanks," he responded, appreciating the wish for good luck. Benji grinned as they finally reached the cafeteria, looking over at Ron. "Oh, but it's such a long trek to walk across the hall to yours and Evan's lair," he added teasingly, hoping to lighten the mood a little as they moved into the line, "I could die of exhaustion before I made it!"

"You'd do that? For me?" he asked, still grinning, Was it a weird time to reflect on how far Ron had come since they'd first met? It probably was. But, still. Benji liked how much more naturally the other teen seemed to be able to joke around these days. It was definitely a welcome change. Grabbing a tray, he set it down on the rail, pushing it along as the line moved. "You kind of rock," he said after a moment, his grin fading into a softer smile, "Just putting that out there."

"You are my best friend," Ron answered, shrugging slightly as he took a tray for himself. If he more relaxed than he had been when they first met, Benji had to be given credit on that. He was not just Ron´s best friend, he was his first ever real friend. Honestly, were it not for him and Evan, Ron would probably still be the same quiet and weird kid he had been a year ago - far quieter and weirder than he was now.

He blushed then, dropping his eyes to his tray. He never knew how to react when people said such things - it was always a little confusing. "So do you," he said, offering Benji a shy smile as he raised his gaze again after a moment.

Of course, Benji knew that, but it was still nice to hear it every now and again. "Right back at you, Ron," he promised, more than proud to be able to call Ron that. He doubted that he and Evan were the sole causes of Ron coming out of his shell, but they had, without a doubt, contributed. Especially Evan, if these past few months were any indication.

His smile widened a little at his friend's blush and Benji nudged him lightly - affectionately, in a way that told only of friendship - before reaching for a bottle of water and setting it on his tray. "Thanks," he responded, turning his attention to the lunch-lady a moment or two later. He waited for Ron after he was served before leading the way over to an empty table and sitting down.

Ron would never be quite certain why anyone wanted him for a friend, but he was more than happy to accept that Benji did. He gave Benji a big even if somewhat shy smile. Sure, there were other things factoring into the slow but certain improvement of his confidence and attitude - like being far away from his parents, Warblers, Dalton in general - but having friends contributed more than just a little. Perhaps without them the rest would hardly matter. And having a boyfriend definitely did not hurt either.

"You are welcome," Ron grinned, before grabbing a soda for himself and ordering his own meal and then following Benji to the table, taking a seat opposite him.

Twisting the cap off of his water, he looked across at Ron. "So, what's up, anyway?" he asked, searching for potential topics. "You decided to stay for Easter, right?" he mused after a moment, hoping he wasn't intruding as he added, "Same thing as Christmas, with the not wanting to choose, or...?" Not that he was entirely sure what the 'or' was; Ron just didn't want to see his family, maybe? Or he'd yet to even hear from them...

Ron shrugged, looking down to his tray for a moment. "No one offered to have me. I have not actually spoken to either of them in a while." It was not necessarily a bad thing. Honestly, he rather preferred to not talk to them if he could avoid it. And he did not mind talking about them and did not consider Benji´s question intruding. He just did not like feeling like the odd boy whose parents did not even care to invite him home for major holidays. "I would have probably opted for staying here anyway," he added, opening his soda and taking a sip. "You are staying with your grandparents? How are the things there?"

"Oh." That always bothered Benji a little bit; he understood that Ron wasn't a big fan of his parents to begin with, but they should at least make an effort. But had they really not even thought to call Ron during the storm warning in Orlando, at least? "Well, at least you've got Evan here to keep you company," he noted, smiling again, "Try not to get into too much trouble, eh?"

He paused at Ron's questions, setting his water down. "Things are good, pretty much back to normal," he replied, smiling slightly, but it faded quickly, "I'm just worried, because it's almost a guarantee that Jason will be at the Vigil mass on the Saturday night. Hopefully they won't have much to say about it," he finished, giving a small shrug.

"I should probably contact them soon," Ron mused. "I need to make arrangements for the summer break, sooner or later." Maybe, perhaps, his parents would have called during the tornado watch in Orlando, were they aware he was there. But since he had not cared enough to inform them where he would be spending the break - and neither of them had asked - it was not as if they had any means to know he was in Florida. He smiled at the mention of Evan, though. "I am selfishly glad he is staying," he admitted. "And I am certain we will manage to stay out of any major trouble, but I have to say, I wonder how it is long until the next broken bone... He seems to mean that skating idea."

As Benji spoke, Ron nodded along slowly. "I am glad things are back to normal at the moment and I hope it will go well," he said, offering his friend an encouraging smile. "And if anything, you can always call me, even if only to vent or something."

"You're welcome to come over for a few days, if you feel like putting off seeing them," he offered, smiling slightly before starting on his food. He definitely wouldn't mind that. He swallowed, laughing a little bit as Ron mused on Evan's inclination to wind up injured. "I give it a week, tops," he guessed, grinning. Of course, he hoped Evan would be injury-free, but... yeah. "Be extra-nice to him when he's hurt," he added, blushing faintly and looking down when he realized how that might be interpreted.

With another small smile, he nodded, "I'm glad, too." Looking up again, his smile softened at the encouraging look Ron was giving him, "Thanks, Ron. I hope I won't need to, but if I do, I will."

"Thank you," Ron smiled shyly. He was very grateful for the offer and would probably take Benji up on it eventually, but he really did not want to be a burden. Especially when he could not repay the invitation. "I really appreciate it." At Benji´s guess he nodded. "A week sounds about right." Really wanted Evan to not get hurt, but the chances of him learning something like skating without a broken bone or two were slim to none. But if he were to enjoy the activity, then it would be worth it. Turning red at the possible implications of his friend´s suggestion he hid behind his soda. "I am always nice to him," he muttered.

"You are welcome," he said, returning the smile. "I hope it will not be needed either. Not that I am not always available and willing to listen, but I would be happy if your break went without complications."

"Anytime," he responded easily, matching Ron's smile with one of his own. Ron was always welcome at his place, as far as he was concerned; his family didn't seem to mind, either. With another soft chuckle, Benji reached for his water, taking a drink. "Hopefully he'll only wind up with a sprain or something. They heal a lot quicker." His blushed a little darker when Ron seemed to catch the double meaning, too, "Sorry. I didn't, uh, mean..." Trailing off, he offered a sheepish smile.

Benji nodded along, grinning slightly as Ron rambled. "Here's hoping for the 'no complications' part," he mused, raising his water bottle slightly in a mock-toast.

With a slightly embarrassed smile and a small shrug, Ron nodded. "It is alright. I know you did not." The leap his mind made was his own fault.

Raising his own bottle as well, Ron nodded. Really, no complications would be quite nice. Everyone deserved a rest from all the drama, at least through the breaks.

There was a tiny part of him that wondered about Evan and Ron's relationship, but only for comparison's sake. But it was absolutely none of his business, so he'd never actually ask. That would end up being awkward and embarrassing for everyone involved.

As the conversation tapered off, Benji allowed himself to focus on eating his lunch for a few moments. The cool thing about his friendship with Ron was that they could handle silence just fine; it wasn't necessary to forcibly fill it whenever it cropped up.
