Who: Jude & Delano
Where: around town
What: A not-date. Running into each other in the oddest of places.
When: Thursday, February 24, afternoon
Rating: SFW

The florist had been on the way to the movie theater. If they had decided on something other than a movie, they could've avoided all this. But no, fate had other things in store for them. Delano kept eying the rose that was now in Jude's hand and wondered why he had handed it off in the first place. Quite simply, he didn't want to hold it. On the other hand, it looked like he had given it to Jude. Not that he didn't want to; he would've loved to have done so with a guilt-free conscience. (But it felt sort of weird to be passing flowers to someone else when you were in a relationship.)

"Um, so who do you think got mistaken for a girl?" Delano snickered to himself, glancing over his shoulder once more. He thought he caught a sheepish expression on the girl's face until she turned to offer more free samples to an actual couple.

A rose. He had a rose! No one had ever given him a flower before. Sure, he'd handled one. He'd been given one but that had been with the expectation of handing it off to May as soon as he picked her up. He'd never actually been given one to keep. It was nice and it made him feel... well, he wasn't too sure. Looking up from the flower he turned his attention back to the girl at the flower shop who was handing out the roses. "Oh I hope it wasn't me. My father would kill me." He was still somewhere in the midwest area so the threat of certain death seemed reasonable. "If it was... I reckon I have to cut my hair soon." He didn't think it was too long but he could never tell. "Maybe no one was mistaken for a girl and she just thought..." He trailed off and shrugged. Del could draw his own conclusions from that.

When Jude had settled upon a movie after classes he hadn't originally planned on going with anyone. Blaine was in a mood (and other than the recent Warbler news he had no idea why) and Jude had decided it might be best to give his room mate some space. He scribbled a quick note and had left. He'd simply run into Del on the way. As luck would have it they were heading the same way to see the same thing. It just seemed natural that they'd head out together. They had been walking and talking, Jude had been laughing (or maybe he was giggling) at something Del had said when the girl had walked out of the florist's and handed off the rose with a cheerful smile. It was strange, to say the least.

"Thought what?" Delano asked without any real thought. The implications had been lost upon him. Yet at the same time, something nagged at the back of his mind. The more he thought about it, the more he wondered if he was just imagining it. Why would Jude suggest...? Yeah, no, he was imagining it. There was no way the senior thought of him as--Blake! You are with Blake. He's good to you and he likes you and stop acting like you and Jude are more than friends and stuff. After the mental scolding he gave himself, Delano began to relax.

Jude turned to look at Del and laughed softly. "Well if you don't know I ain't going to tell you. It was a silly mistake on her part." He may have been teasing just a little but he was sure the answer was obvious. The girl had seen them walking together and had thought they were a couple. In Jude's mind that was the safest way to keep either of them from feeling like the the poor floorist had mistaken either of them for girls. He knew Del was quite happy in his relationship with Blake and Jude respected that and, after that near kiss in the pool, he was trying to keep things feeling as platonic as possible. The rose wasn't helping neither was the florist but he was pretty sure he'd been doing a pretty good job up until then.

Being left out of the loop was no fun. "Poor girl. She's just doin' her job." But if Jude did so for his sake, well, Delano could live with that. He didn't pry for an answer and contented himself silly conclusions. Jude did look a bit girly. Maybe that was why he found the older student undeniably attractive. At first he thought it was a heightened sense of admiration. But Del could put two and two together, especially when one of those was an almost-kiss. He still wanted to try it out, just to see if it felt any different from kissing Blake. But then he'd be no better than Chris, right? Delano sighed as he brooded over his weird conflicting feelings.

"Had I been walkin' with someone else, I wouldn't have given up the flower," he admitted. Delano kept playing the scenario out in his head, wondering why he had been so eager to pawn the rose off onto Jude. Imagining someone like Evan, for example, didn't make Del feel the same frantic vibe; he would've held onto the rose without complaint.

Jude would have to consult someone about his hair later. He wouldn't make a public announcement about it like Colby had but maybe Blaine or Phil or someone could give him an honest opinion about it. He'd ask Del but he didn't want the younger man to think he was obsessing over his looks or that handing over the rose had done something to his self image. He was actually quite happy to get a flower for no reason and all ready had a perfect spot for it picked out on his desk... as long as it survived the movie. He'd have to get a small cup of water to put it in.

"Well... if it makes ya feel any better if I had been walkin with someone else I wouldn't have wound up with the flower. It was just... nice of you." Which it was. If Del had been one of Jude's other friends he would've held onto the rose and they would've laughed about it. They may have even opened up the conversation with Del's own question about which one of them looked like a girl. It was just nice that neither of them were teasing the other about their features. "So... which movie should we go see?"

Delano wasn't quite sure what Jude meant, but he was happy to be of service. He didn't mention how had Jude been walking with someone else, he probably wouldn't have been offered a flower in the first place. "Yer welcome, Jude. It suits ya better anyhow." Flowers were pretty to look at and fun to sniff, but Del wasn't sure if he could accept a bouquet. Regardless of preference, he was a guy after all. "I dunno. How's 'bout a comedy? I could use a good laugh."

"You think so?" He didn't really know what to make of that comment. Did he seem like the type of guy who liked flowers or was it something else? He'd accept the comment as a compliment of some sort and just run with it. Flowers suited him, it meant something good, the end.

Nodding towards the theater, Jude ran across the street and stopped to see what was playing. Del had said a comedy. He wasn't exactly sure what movies were out but he sort of hoped they wouldn't wind up forced into some kind of romantic comedy. That would just make things weird. Turning back to Del as the younger man caught up with him he nodded towards the marquee. "I ain't too sure we have much to choose from in the way of a comedy but I'll go see whichever sounds good." They could even go to seperate shows if Del wasn't interested in joining him for the actual movie portion and just meet up later but... he wasn't really going to suggest that.

Del scanned over the line up of choices, noting how none of the titles sounded humorous in the slightest. He masked his disappointment with a cheery smile and waltzed up to the ticket booth. He requested two tickets for a random film and passed a twenty beneath the glass. Retrieving both his purchase and some change, Delano walked back to Jude and waved the tickets in his face. "Let's hope my instinct proves entertainin'."

That... was sort of unexpected. Jude had assumed Del would look up at the movies and they'd decide on something and pay for their own tickets. He didn't think the younger man would pay for his. The young lady (why were there so many girls today) behind the ticket counter flashed them a sweet smile before turning back towards her next customer. The girl at the flower shop had been a little hasty when she walked out and handed Del a flower, there was no excuse for this one. She had to know neither of them were girls which meant she assumed they were on a date. Jude couldn't fault her for it either. He was carrying a rose and Del bought him a ticket. Ignoring it, and not bringing it up to Del, he tugged the younger man into the theater. "I trust your instincts." He smiled. "Okay, well, since you paid for the tickets it's only fair that I buy the popcorn and stuff, right?"

"Go crazy. I'm not a picky eater, regardless of what Ma says over dinner." Besides, it was all junk food one way or another. Anything loaded with sugar and fat was yummy in his tummy. So Delano wandered inside and handed off his ticket, smiling at the staff member who pointed out which room to head towards. "Thanks, sir." He gestured for Jude to follow and stood a ways from the snacks line.

That was easy enough. Jude wandered to the snack line and tried to focus on what he wanted. They could probably share a popcorn, right? So a big one between them and two drinks? That sounded about right. He placed his order (and requested the water for his flower) and paid before carrying everything back so he could follow Del. "You don't mind sharin the popcorn, right?" He smiled as he handed over Del's soda. He could manage carrying everything else but the extra soda was a little much.

Walking into the theater he picked out a nice place for them to sit (towards the middle of the screen but up high enough so they were sort of away from everyone else and sat down, making sure both his soda and the flower were resting where they should be in the arm rests. "You know... I'm glad I ran into you. I had planned on comin out here anyway but I don't reckon I would've had as much fun... or, you know, possibly any if I'd come on my own."

Who had problems with sharing popcorn? Now that was just silly. As if the theater people expected one person to eat an entire tub by themselves. Grubby hands would be everywhere.

"The more the merrier, ain't that how it goes? In all honesty, I'm glad I ran into ya, too, Jude." And although he wasn't quite sure how to word it, he was having a blast (and the movie hadn't even started yet!)

There was really no way to respond. Jude was glad Del was there and Del was glad Jude was there. It was nice and, for some reason, slightly awkward. Jude blamed it more on the fact that he couldn't think of anything else to say rather than everything that had all ready been said in this odd, yet fun, day. With no other way to break the, possibly imagined, tension Jude picked up a piece of popcorn and playfully tossed it at Del with a laugh.

Delano stared at the piece of popcorn that'd bounced off his chest and landed in his lap. "Wow, really, Jude?" He grabbed a piece and chucked it at his friend, sticking his tongue out in defiance.

"What? It slipped." He lied, trying to offer Del something of an honest smile. It would've probably been more believable if Del hadn't been staring at him when he'd done it but... he'd make due. Jude had opened his mouth to say something else when a piece of popcorn came flying at him, hitting him directly on the cheek. He sat, staring at Del, mouth opened as he tried to feign a scandalized look. "Oh... ya do realize this means war, right?" The minute he picked up the piece, however, the theater darkened.

As if anyone would buy that as an excuse.

Delano snickered at Jude's poor attempt for affrontedness. "But of course." And thus he was saved by the lights. Del hummed and settled back into his seat, thinking that they'd have to settle the score after the movie.
