January Warbler Concert
Who: WARBLERS
What: WARBLER CONCERT
Where: DALTON THEATER
When: Sunday, January 30, 7 PM
Rating: SFW (we hope!)

The performance was scheduled to begin at 7 PM sharp, with one intermission halfway through. Students could attend free of charge with their student IDs, while family and the community were charged $5 a ticket at the door. Seats were first-come, first-served, and the theater was filling up fast.

((Performances will be led by Noah, Ben M., Kurt, Mocchi, (intermission), Ben D., Ron, and Raf, in that order, finishing with one truly-choral song in which there are no leads. All Warblers participate as backup for all the songs. Please post your song in the appropriate performances section.))

Scotty nodded eagerly.

"Yes! I love it!" he exclaimed. His leg kept bouncing. "I don't want it to end."

The Warblers were so amazing. His parents would have loved it.

"Can you sing?" Gabriel asked. "Are you going to try out for the Warblers next year?"

At that, Scotty shook his head, his blush growing. Him, being on the Warblers? No way would that happen.

"I can't sing," Scotty said. He had never tried. He liked songs without lyrics and he doubted that the Warblers were looking for someone that could hum. "Would you ever join?"

"No," Gabriel answered. "I dance, not sing." He looked back up at the stage, then around the auditorium. So many people were here. The room was completely packed. Uncle Arthur was somewhere in the crowd, he knew.

Aaron had been there for the first half, yes, but hadn't seen Scotty until intermission. He was sitting by a blonde boy--

--Gabriel?

Aaron had never met him yet. He could only guess that was Gabriel, but still, that Scotty seemed comfortable enough around him was probably a good indication. It made his lips tighten as he approached. And approached Scotty, specifically.

"Hey Scotty," he said, only looking briefly at his companion.

Scotty nodded. Not everyone could sing, though it seemed like it here. So much talent in one place seemed like an impossible reality, yet it was the real life.

"Maybe the Warblers will have dancers for a routine," Scotty said, his bouncing increasing at the thought. Seeing Gabriel on that stage would be incredible. Seeing Gabriel on any stage would be.

He opened his mouth to add on when Aaron came over. His smile widened and he looked up at the other boy.

"Hi Aaron!" Scotty said. "This is the coolest thing ever! Have you seen one before? Where-"

The words trailed off. Aaron and Gabriel had never met face-to-face before, had they? And they didn't like each other either...

He bit his lip nervously.

"Um, Gabriel, this is Aaron. Aaron, this is Gabriel," Scotty offered quietly, his leg stilling.

"Charmed, I'm sure," Gabriel drawled, his eyes narrowing a little as he looked up at the red-head. So this was the infamous Aaron Scottie adored? Gabriel automatically didn't like him. Not that that was any surprise.

Now, Aaron's dislike of Gabriel had been entirely based upon first impressions, his gut, and hearsay. He'd known that, and for Scotty's sake, had decided to try to reserve judgment. But that wasn't a very promising introduction.

There was a slight, tense pause before he spoke, quite normally. "Nice to meet you, Gabriel," was all he said before he sat on Scotty's other side.

"You're enjoying it, then?" He was speaking only to Scotty.

Perhaps it was for the best that Scotty hadn't invited Aaron. The air seemed to grow heavy with tension, two sides waging a war against each other and Scotty stuck in the middle. He looked at Gabriel and then down at his hand, silently offering his own to assure him that he wasn't being forgotten or neglected.

"I am!" Scotty said, his voice growing more animated as he spoke. "It's so amazing! They're just like I remembered. And Ben, he was really really good, wasn't he? His voice is so nice to listen to! And Kurt was good too, wasn't he? And Mocchi too! They were all so good!"

Gabriel looked at Scottie's offered hand. Was he meant to take it? Scottie was so odd about being touched. Sometimes, he flinched away, but other times, he clutched at Gabriel for comfort. Did he want that sort of comfort now?

After taking some time to deliberate, Gabriel closed his fingers around Scottie's hand, blocking out Aaron.

Aaron's jaw tensed a bit, and he did his best to ignore the prickling of hairs on the back of his neck. Give Gabriel a chance, he reminded himself sharply. For Scotty's sake.

He nodded at Scotty. "They're brilliant, they really are," he agreed, and Scotty's enthusiasm for the whole deal made him smile a little smile. He had mixed feelings about the Warblers as a whole, at the moment, but there was no denying they were good. Very good.

Scotty tightened his grip as soon as Gabriel accepted his hand. He felt weird, sitting between the two like this, but the seats weren't exactly movable. They couldn't sit in a neat little triangle.

Then again, maybe this conversation would be even more awkward. The two didn't like each other; what if all they did was glare at one another? Scotty wasn't sure he would be able to stick around to mediate.

"It would have been amazing to see you up there," Scotty said softly. "But, um, it's nice to watch them all too, isn't it?"

He felt like a jerk for even bringing it up.

Aaron nodded, looking with a look of something like consideration up at the stage. "I'd have liked to be there." And it was true. "But here's good, too. You're right, it's nice." He was quiet a moment. "Who is your favourite so far?"

"Ben," Scotty said without hesitation. Ben had been amazing, one of the best Scotty had ever heard. Already he wished he could hear more of it. It sounded so pretty. "He was incredible, wasn't he? Everything about him was awesome. But, um, what about you?"

He looked at Gabriel as well, hoping to draw him back into the conversation.

"Ben," Gabriel agreed with a shrug. He was the tall one, right? Gabriel knew he didn't care for Mocchi, and the first one was Noah, who was more of an ass than the average Dalton student. That left Kurt and Ben out of the first performances, and Kurt came across as very Mocchi-like. That left only Ben.

Gabriel closed his eyes for a moment, reaching up to rub his head. He could feel a headache starting to come on. It would be a migraine by the end of the night.

Aaron nodded. Ben was good. They were all good. He'd certainly got confirmation that the Dalton Warblers were made up of individuals who each brought something new and different to the table.

Of course, so would he have. But he didn't say that. "They're all really good," is what he said instead. "Would you want to audition next year?" If he was so enthusiastic about it, why not, Aaron thought, and gave Scotty a smile.

Scotty shook his head, blond hair flopping about with the movement. No way would he audition. His foster father would kill him if he did -- and if he got in. Scotty was already pressing his luck just by drawing whenever he wanted now. At least the consensus was here that drawing was good, and mostly everyone knew that Scotty didn't want his foster father to find out about his little habit.

"I can't sing," Scotty said. "And Gabriel-" He turned, seeing that Gabriel was rubbing his head. Scotty frowned and squeezed his hand tighter, silently offering his support. He wouldn't bring it up right now. He would have hated if someone did that to him. He turned back to Aaron. "Um, sorry. Gabriel though, he can dance really well, but he can't sing either."

There were still a few minutes left in the intermission, long enough for Gabriel to get some water so he could take some of the migraine meds he kept on him at all times. It would be smarter to take them now than to wrestle with the full pain later. Disentangling his hand from Scottie's, he got to his feet.

He shouldn't just disappear. Scottie would be worried. "I'll be back," he informed the smaller boy before turning to leave the auditorium.

Aaron had been about to actually address Gabriel - "You dance?" - when the boy left abruptly.

Huh. He turned back to Scotty, then, but didn't press the issue. "I didn't think I could sing until I gave it a go and started taking lessons. It's fun, though, whether you're terrible or not."

Scotty shook his head. If art was a useless talent, then singing had to be too. Singers were just like artists -- only the very best made it big -- and Scotty was not even close to being the best. Chasing after such dreams was useless.

"I haven't sang since, um, my parents," Scotty said softly. The elementary school in Lima didn't require classes such as choir. That had been okay though. Scotty hadn't felt much like singing back then, and he didn't really now either. "Um, I didn't know you were taking lessons. Is it fun?"
