Summary: Severus becomes the subject of Lily and Remus' debate, and manages to settle and internal debate of his own.

They were in the library together. Severus had tried not to look out for them, tried to ignore the fact that Lily was getting so chummy with her fellow Gryffindor, but when he rounded the Potions shelving and saw them sat at the table, he couldn't help but stop and stare.
He wasn't sure when he had first become aware of Lily's friendship with Lupin. They had never exactly not been friends, both being likeable people and in the same house, but something had changed this term; they had begun to spend enough time together that it no longer felt like they were simply housemates and study partners, but that they were friends... and perhaps something more.
That was what bothered Severus. At least, that was what he wanted to think bothered him about them. It was much easier to equate the roiling in his stomach with simple jealousy than with a more confusing set of emotions and desires, rushing upon him even as he stood there watching. Two heads were bent close together as they shared a book. With the sun behind them, Lily's hair was aflame, and seemed to transmit some of its fire to Lupin's as the light picked out the warmer browns in the shaggy cut brushing his collar.
Looking back abruptly at Lily, Severus drank in how beautiful she was. So pretty and feminine with her full lips, her perfect nose with its sprinkling of freckles, and her large, green eyes. He yearned for a connection with her luminous gaze, which would reassure him that despite school loyalties he had known her first, and she would always belong to him.
Lupin had freckles, too. Just like Lily's, there were enough to be enticing rather than glaring. He didn't have green eyes, though. At least, Severus was pretty sure that Lupin didn't. He hadn't noticed them being green in the past, but then Severus hadn't noticed the auburn highlights in Lupin's hair before. He wished he was closer, so that he could check just what colour Lupin's eyes actually were. So he could see the proof that Lupin was ordinary, and not worth the pounding of his heart in his chest. That belonged to Lily. Lupin couldn't have it as well.
He gradually became aware that Lily and Lupin were looking at him. They were both smiling: Lily with an appealing twist of her ripe lips that made Severus' legs turn to jelly; Lupin with a toothy grin that made the fine hairs stand up all over Severus' body.
In that moment he decided he hated them, and, ignoring Lily's call, he sharply turned and fled from the library; running from the conflicting attractions to Lily's generous curves and the strength flexing in Lupin's forearms.
