The Sangster Institute
Hey everyone! We’ve got the low down on the school for you here :) Here’s anything you need to know and even a few things that might not have occurred to you.
The staff and the Ministry have really tried to make the school feel at home and bring back they could to Hogwarts, including statues, tapestries, paintings, but there are still items from the former owner. Many of these range from strange to creepy or even scary. Though they've tried, the school is still sparse of knit-knacks and decor. This school is much smaller than Hogwarts and though the students should not feel cramped, the extra space is obviously no longer there.
The castle consists of three buildings: the prison building, the main building, and the attached building. Then there's an obviously smaller detached building connected by a small unenclosed roofed bridge on the third floor. This was the prison building. The third building is an add-on to the center building from the last century. It includes four towers and is a rectangular building with an incredibly large courtyard.
Prison building: A rectangular building which isn’t attached to the main building and has two entrances. One entrance is at ground level facing the main building and the other is on the third level attaching to the main building by a bridge. -Underground: Is separated into two layers. The lowest is smaller tetradecagon (14-sided) shaped room that was once used for torture. It's hexed against student use. The upper level consists of jail cells which are still intact. Currently a couple of these cells have been altered to provide storage for Quidditch and Flying class as well as the Quidditch locker rooms. -Ground level: An entrance can be found directly underneath the bridge. There are three classrooms for Potions on this floor and the Potion Master's living quarters and office. A classroom for Arithmancy is here as well along with that teacher's rooms. A large study area can be found on this floor as well. -Second level & Third level: The boys' dormitory spread to two floors. There are 3 bathrooms which each include 6 stalls and six shower heads. There are 7 bedrooms with 20 bunked beds which are still curtained for privacy. There is little trunk space and 10 dressers. There are also two lounge areas exclusively for the boys. The third floor is attached to the bridge and is the boys' entrance way into the building. The entrance is a tapestry with a pack of wolves hunting a stag. When you tickle the proper wolf's stomach, his mouth opens wide to allow access to the bridge and dormitory.
Main building: This is the base building for the entire school. It’s the largest of the three. Like the Prison building, it’s also rectangular. -Underground: A sloping split level that contains storage for the carriages, extra desks, and repair equipment for the Quidditch field and green houses. There is also a very large kitchen here and spacious quarters for the House Elves. The Herbology classroom 10 is located down there as well, with the plants that are not allowed in sunlight. -Ground level: --Ground level A: The large foyer, the staircase, and the two side halls. One side leads no where. The other leads to the entrance to the tower building and contains a few rooms, including the staff room. There are four doors on the sides of the staircase. The doors on the left lead to a stadium like classroom for History of Magic and the ones on the right lead to a Muggle Studies classroom of similar size. --Ground level B: A long stone railed hallway on top of the stairs with entrance to the Great Hall in the center. Enter the pewter doors into a vast Great Hall but instead of the normal four tables there are two ridiculously long tables to take up the space of the castle's former ballroom. Like at Hogwarts there are still floating candles and the ceiling of the room is actually one large dome with frescoes depicting the night sky. Once seated the students can easily see that there is a second floor to the room where guests could once watch the dancers below but now it's used for extra study space for the student, with gothic arches with smiling demons sprouting out from the tops of columns, allowing peek-a-boo views of shelves filled with books and small wooden tables for lone study or a tutor and student to catch up on Potions. At either end of the initial hallway are archways that lead to stairwells with four spiral staircases that sometimes overlap each other. -Second floor: Houses the quarters, flat and offices for the History of Magic and Muggles Studies teachers. The library is also on this floor and includes the areas that can be seen over the Great Hall. Finishing off this floor is the Ancient Runes classroom, office, and flat along with a study area. -Third floor: The Charms teacher's office and flat along with two classrooms are here. Down the hall is a Divination classroom and that teacher's office and flat. -Fourth floor: The shared Aurors' office and their separate flats. Two Transfiguration classrooms are here with the teacher's office and quarters. Then there are three DADA classrooms along with the office and flat of the teacher. -Formerly the Attic: Was once a large family prayer room and storage of magical relics, but is now the alumni bedrooms. Boys and girls are separated by a large floor to ceiling metal gate. All alumni have a 10 by 10 space with a twin bed, dresser, and side table made private by heavy curtains. At either end of the attic are rose windows containing abstract subjects that shift as the days go to more recognizable scenes. They vary from more pleasant scenes to scenes of the damned.
Attached building: There are four towers, one at each corner of the building. The two towers closest to the main building are thicker and the two further towers are thinner in size. Within the curtain walls attaching tower to tower, there’s actually a large amount of space between the inner and outer walls. These structures are all three floors with high ceilings. Curtain wall closest to the main building is not in use and there are no entrances on that side. -Courtyard: Large greenhouse used for Year One through Three students. -Western Curtainwall (against the castle): --Unused and has no outside entrance -Southwestern Tower: --Ground floor: flats for Madam Pomfrey and Infirmary staff. --Second and third floors: Two level Infirmary. --Unused amount of space above. -Northwestern Tower: --Ground, Second, and Third floor: Unused --Fourth floor: Office and classroom for Astronomy. --Fifth floor: Balcony circles tower for stargazing classes. --Sixth floor: Classroom for Ancient Runes -Northeastern Tower: --Girls dormitory including 3 bathrooms which each include 6 stalls and six shower heads. There are 7 bedrooms with 20 bunked beds which are still curtained for privacy. There is space to stack trunks and 10 dressers. There are also two lounge areas. --Ground level: Tapping a certain combination of bricks allow entrance at this level. --Third level: An entrance is here by giving a password to the statue of Athena. -Eastern Curtainwall: --Each floor has a study hall, Prefect bathes (captains can also use) and Prefect meeting room. -Southeastern Tower --Ground level: Filch's office and flat. --Top two levels: McGonagall's office and flat.
Grounds: Outside the school where students enter the main building is a walled courtyard. Near the edge of the grounds, diagonal from the entrance and to the left is a large barn. The bottom floor contains a classroom on one side for CoMC and Hagrid's living space on the other. Then there are two levels of creatures. The top most level is the owlery. Students can reach this via a staircase in the back of the building. To the left of the castle, further away is the Quidditch Pitch near the edge of the forest. It's a standard sized field but there is less seating. To the back right diagonal of the prison building are four green houses. The rest of the grounds are expansive with half backing to the woods while the rest trail off to the village.
*The class schedules will remain the same as before, so please check out the Plot Extras post for that information. The classes for alumni will be posted there before the weekend. Information about the island itself and the town will be posted on this weekend. Everyone make sure you run the old friend button, we'll post another this weekend. Have fun :)
