On fake eyelashes [22 Aug 2008|03:29pm]

[ mood | aggravated ]

I'm doing a flapper costume for a LARP and the makeup tutorial I got suggested fake eyelashes. Well, figuring I wouldn't be wearing them often, I bought the cheap NYC self-adhering ones. I guess you get what you pay for, because they were a pain to get off (I bent one trying to get them off the tray) and they wouldn't stick or even contour to my eye.

Any tips on using fake lashes? Should I splurge and get the nice kit with the glue and applicator? Am I doomed to a costume with short lashes?

Hey all,

My name's Tia and I'm going to be cosplaying for the first time at AnimeNext this year. Currently I have a group of three, including me, doing a Demon Diary cosplay. My friends are going as Leeche (the annoying little girl) and Raenef (the oh-so adorable demon lord). I’ve made the costume for Raenef and am currently making the one for myself. I’ll be going as Eclipse. If anyone has heard of Demon Diary and/or is interested in cosplaying with our group, let me know would you? We are looking for Erutis, Chris, Meruhesae, Krayon, and possibly Raenef IV? Let me know whether or not anyone’s interested, or if you may know someone who is. Thanks guys!

Hey everyone! I'm Caitlin and I'm mostly a Kingdom Hearts/Final Fantasy cosplayer.

I was wondering, does anyone have any experience with making cosplay props/weapons? I am currently making a Fairy Harp Keyblade. (This is what it currently looks like.) I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to attach the handles to the dowel rod part of the Keyblade at the bottom, because the dowel rod is round and the handle looks like it needs to be flat.

Does anyone have any suggestions/ideas as to how I could attach the handles on/what materials I should use? Any input will be greatly appreciated ♥

Makeup for a Clockwork Doll [29 Jan 2008|12:23pm]

There's a LARP event coming up, a formal Masque, and I've discovered an intriguing dilemma. Up till now, I could get away with my rather Victorian robot appearance by coating my face, neck, ears and hands in shimmery bronzer and I just wore long sleeves and stockings. Only now, my arms will be mostly bare (I detest gloves, but I will suffer if I must) and my shoulders as well. I have very little money and my dress is mostly white. Does anyone have any ideas for metallic makeup that will actually stay with a decent amount of powder?

Wig worries [25 Jan 2008|10:48am]

[ mood | annoyed ]

Hi! I'm Brenna! Supposedly, I'm a "Journeyman" Costumer (at least, that's what they make me fill out at cons), but I haven't worked with wigs too much.

My problem is this: My head is rather large for a woman, and my hair, which, for religious reasons, I keep long, is waist-length and very thick. I'm currently in a LARP as a character who is supposed to be a mechanical doll. Because she's all metal, I wanted to purchase a golden-colored wig, but I have trouble getting my hair under most wigs comfortably. I think I've found one: Amphigory's Enchantment wig in Gold Coin. It's the right length and the perfect color, but I'm worried about trying to wear it without giving myself an agonizing headache. Has anyone used this wig before and will it fit a larger head? Does anyone have any tips for making my hair as flat as possible?

Re: Plans? What plans? [16 Jan 2008|01:01pm]

Good afternoon! My name is Otako, and today I'm going to cleverly introduce myself by answering the previous post. (Marvel at my genius.)

I am not as yet making something, but I'm in the process of getting ready to. When I get home from my vacation, I would like to start taking sewing classes. My first cosplay project after becoming competent at it would be to work on a Fallen Angel Flonne costume. Here is a handy reference picture. As it is, I need to work on absolutely everything-- I'm beginning by looking around for various pieces of the costume. (For example, I am on the lookout for the perfect red swimsuit and heels that will co-ordinate together, since there really is no need to sew what I don't have to, right?)

I'm always a fan of outfits that go slightly beyond the minimal costume requirements-- interesting fabrics, embellishments, and things like that. In this case, I would like to enhance any seams I can with a little shine, and definitely keep details like the texture/look of each color the same. So, if I get a very shiny red swimsuit, I'd like to make the shoes and red ribbons shiny, too. The tail will likely be the hardest part, as will finding a suitable long, blonde wig, but I'm ready to deal with it.

One aspect that came up when I decided to do this was the issue of chest size. Looking at the figure and pictures of Fallen Angel Flonne, we can tell she has a chest, but it's probably not a large as mine. Normally, I try to stay away from flat-chested characters (hence why I'm not going near Etna), but I believe that the style of Flonne's costume works for my chest. Because she is wearing a large, covering piece of white that is essentially cut like an empire waist, I believe that my chest will be adequately camouflaged enough to pass as hers.

Now, the last thing is probably the most essential: I'm going to have to get into character, too. This means I'll need to play Disgaea again (or have someone else do it and have them show me the cutscenes). I can't help it-- if I'm going to cosplay a character, I want to get into character, too. Is that strange?

Anyway, I think that's just about it from me for now! Good luck, fellow cosplayers!

Plans? What plans? [05 Jun 2007|03:51am]

[ mood | accomplished ]

So, to get started, let's get to know what you guys are planning or hoping to do. Are you making something? Are you almost finished? What do you need to work on? Or are you completely clueless? (The last one, you can create a new post to get questions/help from others). You may also show a reference photo since not all of us know all kinds of anime. It'd be great if you did that.

Right now, I'm working on Temari (Naruto) cosplay for two conventions later this summer. It's about finished, I just need to finish the wig, paint the fan, make head band and lastly, make the leggings from fishnets I got from Claire's. The outfit I'm doing

Once I'm done with that, I hope to make a gothic lolita dress, probably off-white which would be nice.

Welcome [04 Jun 2007|10:40pm]

Hello prospects and new members, this community is for talking about anything related to costuming. It can be cosplay, EGL (Gotic Lolita), outfits for renaissance fairs, etc. You may ask questions about a particular technique for sewing or offering your services to make a costume to other members of IJ.

You may make an intro post, but please, I wish to see a majority of your post about costuming and not of yourself alone. Such as how long you've been in this area and what's your expertise like styling wigs.

Filling the tags are encouraged so other users may find a post related to what you've written. If it's mostly intro post, then please type "Intro" in the tag box. Thanks!

And now, above all, have fun talking about anything cosplay. =)
