The fact that James had detention for the first week of school wasn't a surprise to anyone, except perhaps James. He'd actually been behaving for once--sitting in class and paying attention, like he was supposed to--when the snitch he carried around in his tote inexplicably pushed free and darted to the front of the room, smacking the professor right between the brows.
And. Well. The whole class laughed when the professor fell on his bum, didn't they? And James had been only trying to help when he darted onto his table and leaped across desks, scattering cheering students as he caught the damn thing.
It'd certainly made class exciting. But detention was inescapable, even when he was fairly certain it wasn't his fault.
"I'll see you tomorrow then," James said, offering Filch a cheeky salute as he headed out the room at a trot. A low mumble of "Strung up by the toes, no backtalking then, drifted behind him and he grinned, hurrying his pace. He had a lot to get done before sneaking into the library tonight. Every night. Merlin, he was tired, but they needed to do their research if they wanted to finish the transform--
"Woah, hey," James said, nearly knocking into someone. He caught their arms in an easy, strong grip, keeping them from falling. His smile was immediately warm and concerned. "You all right then? Sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going."
